Walk Through an Oasis of Beauty The Azalea Path Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, a nonprofit and privately-owned facility, is nestled on the Gibson/Pike County border in southwestern Indiana. What began with 15 acres and a few azaleas and perennials in 1979 has grown to include over 60 acres and more than 3,000 azaleas plus a large variety of unusual plants and native Indiana

trees. Two spring-fed lakes, a waterfall, a koi pond and several unique sculptures complement the beautifully landscaped trails, which wind throughout the grounds. Beverly Knight, along with her husband, Steve, became inspired by the gardens she encountered as a driver for UPS and eventually began collecting starts of plants and trees

from customers on her routes. Thus began what is now one of the largest collections of azaleas in the Midwest. In 2011, the Azalea Path was honored to host the national convention of the Azalea Society of America. Azalea Path Arboretum and Botanical Gardens www.azaleapatharboretum.org ¤

According to the Peach States’ website, “The Okefenokee Swamp is the largest, intact, un-fragmented, freshwater and black water wilderness swamp in North America.” But don’t just take their word for it. Jump in a kayak and travel that soggy wilderness yourself. After an afternoon of spotting alligators, herons and huge dragonflies, wash off the day at a nearby bed and breakfast, campground, or cabin rental. GUESTQUEST SPRING 2015

After getting acclimated to swamp life, head on over to the coast to find even more things to do in Georgia. Between Savannah to the north and Jacksonville, Fla., to the south, you’ll find the Golden Isles. This stretch of four barrier isles along the state’s Atlantic coast caters to all types of vacationers, whether they prefer a tent under the stars or the amenities of a posh resort. The area includes the port city of Brunswick and the four islands: St. Simons

Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island. Each place has its own unique personality, but all of them have that legendary Southern charm. Jekyll Island in particular is a place to consider scheduling into your next Georgia vacation. The southernmost of the four islands, Jekyll Island boasts everything from 10 miles of white-sand beaches to award-winning golf courses to 20 miles of bike trails. Bring your

swimsuit for a day at the beach or a visit to a local waterpark. Don’t forget your fishing gear for a chartered fishing excursion or just casting off on the island fishing pier. And bring some nice clothes for a day of shopping and dining at island’s wide variety of boutiques and restaurants. A trip to Jekyll Island would not be complete with visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The cost of admission goes toward sea turtle rehabilitation, research and

education. Visitors can see the turtles up close and learn more about them and other local animals. Whatever brings you to the Empire State of the South, allow GuestQuest to help you plan your next Georgia vacation.

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina coast features 200 miles of sun and surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years.

Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping

that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more.

Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of

maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

MARYLAND

Maryland ~ You’ve come to the right place! Maryland offers a wealth of possibilities, depending on your interests. Here are just a few… Maryland is a child-friendly state and the perfect place for a family vacation. A logical choice is a trip to Baltimore, where you can explore the acclaimed National Aquarium in Baltimore, visit the nation’s top-rated children’s zoo at The Baltimore Zoo or work at a pretend cannery at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. But there’s plenty for a family to do beyond the boundaries of Baltimore. Consider a hiking adventure in one of

our state parks, enroll in a family sailing course on the Chesapeake Bay, or step back in time at any of our historic attractions. (Yes, they’re educational – but they’re also fun!) Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in your mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains,

or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. And if the mood should strike, you can even stick around and have your wedding here. Maryland is home to the historic old chapel that hosted the weddings of Babe Ruth, Tiny Tim and Debbie Reynolds. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea kayak and paddle through the marsh

grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass (known as “rockfish” to the locals) in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. Take the Road Less Traveled. Poet Robert Frost took the less-worn path. You’ll be glad that you did, too, on any

of Maryland’s 31 designated scenic byways. Forego the freeway and follow the colorful black-eyed Susan signs (the Susan is our state flower) through waterfront villages, past historic monuments, down old Main streets and beside pristine forest glades. These carefully mapped routes, some with “sidetracks” better explored without a car, encourage a leisurely pace as you journey around Maryland. Retreat to a bygone era on Maryland’s Civil War Trails.
