MARYLAND

You’ve come to the right place! Maryland offers a wealth of possibilities, depending on your interests. Here are just a few… Maryland is a child-friendly state and the perfect place for a family vacation. A logical choice is a trip to Baltimore, where you can explore the acclaimed National Aquarium in Baltimore, visit the nation’s top-rated children’s zoo at The Baltimore Zoo or work at a pretend cannery at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. But there’s plenty for a family to do beyond the boundaries of Baltimore. Consider a hiking adventure in one of our state parks, enroll in a family sailing course on the Chesapeake Bay, or step back in time at any of our historic attractions. (Yes, they’re educational – but they’re also fun!) Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle

up in front of a roaring fire in your mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains, or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. And if the mood should strike, you can even stick around and have your wedding here. Maryland is home to the historic old chapel that hosted the weddings of Babe Ruth, Tiny Tim and Debbie Reynolds. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea

kayak and paddle through the marsh grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass (known as “rockfish” to the locals) in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. Take the Road Less Traveled. Poet Robert Frost took the less-worn path. You’ll be glad that you did, too, on any of Maryland’s 31 designated scenic byways. Forego the freeway and follow the colorful black-eyed Susan signs (the Susan is our state flower) through waterfront villages, past historic monuments, down old Main

streets and beside pristine forest glades. These carefully mapped routes, some with “sidetracks” better explored without a car, encourage a leisurely pace as you journey around Maryland. Retreat to a bygone era on Maryland’s Civil War Trails. Brother fought brother in the cornfields around Sharpsburg, a battle that afterwards turned whole towns into makeshift hospitals. Armies clad in blue and gray skirmished through Maryland’s countryside on their way to an epic battle at Gettysburg. A wounded assassin escaped Washington, D.C. into the Southern

Maryland countryside in search of a doctor named Mudd. The Civil War soldiers, spies and villains didn’t have signposts to point the way, but today’s visitors can follow colorful bugle “trailblazer” signs of Maryland’s Civil War Trails. The bugles lead to waysides where interpretive markers tell both military and anecdotal accounts of war and its effects on the people of Maryland. No matter what the interest, you’re sure to find a wealth of information by logging on to www.visitmaryland.org. This article courtesy of Maryland Office of Tourism. 1-866-639-3526

the Federalsburg Museum and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. For those seeking an adventure in the great outdoors, Caroline County offers a 400-acre native garden and nature preserve, eleven miles of pristine waterways, gently curving countryside perfect for cycling, two state parks, hang gliding, Alpaca and Clydesdale farms, hunting lodges and

more. Take a Sunday drive through picturesque farmland or visit one of the quaint towns along the way. Whatever your passion, come spend a weekend with Caroline. www.tourcaroline.com ¤

Maryland’s Beaches… Discover Ocean City and Assateague Island National Seashore and State Park. Witness wild horses as they roam free on the island’s beaches, dunes and back bays. While you’re there, rent a kayak, bike or hit one of the hiking trails. Discover our coastal communities of Berlin, Pocomoke and Snow Hill offering a

great mix of shopping, dining and outdoor adventure. See why Berlin was just named “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel Magazine. We have walking tours, ghost tours, carriage rides, kid-friendly museums and loads of family fun. 800-852-0335, visitworcester.org ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina coast features 200 miles of sun and surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions

and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella.

In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide

choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture

Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. South Carolina’s Hammock Coast ~ A Secluded Escape Ah, the Hammock Coast. The place where the rope hammock itself—that soft, soothing mattress of hand woven cotton—came to be. A century after its creation, the outdoor beds that first put this area on the map have come to symbolize a way of life. They are draped invitingly from live oaks draped with Spanish moss. Yet each year, thousands of vacationers drive past the Hammock Coast without realizing they’ve just encountered a coastal gem. Somehow, this quiet enclave has remained a well-kept secret. Here you’ll experience all the best amenities of a laid-back coastal destination, but in a setting that’s more about calming escapes than modern tourism. The charming towns that make up this enchanting area are all places where relaxation comes naturally. Quiet Beaches: If your vision of the South Carolina shore consists of high rise-filled beaches, crowded tourist shops and traffic jams…well, you haven’t experienced the Hammock Coast. To vacation here is to unwind in coastal towns reminiscent of a quieter time in America’s history. Centuries-old waterfront cottages, miles of soft sand, stunning sunsets, rippling creeks and comfy rope hammocks are all a part of the area’s laid-back string of beaches. Now this is getting away. Award Winning Golf: You’ve heard about the golf. South Carolina’s Grand Strand—most commonly associated with Myrtle Beach—is famous for its 100 courses. Did you know that the Southernmost courses are part of the Hammock Coast? Year-Round Outdoor Fun: There’s a reason National Geographic Adventure Magazine has featured the Hammock Coast as one of “Ten U.S. Adrenaline Outposts.” With a year-round mild climate, the area’s primed for everything from horseback riding to boating to bicycling…in all seasons. Historic Wonders: This isn’t your quintessential Southeast destination. On the Hammock Coast, you won’t find kitschy tourist shops, flashy theme parks or gaudy museums. Instead, think antebellum houses and landmarks—more than 30 of them on the National Register of Historic Places. Picture leisurely afternoons spent exploring the storied history of South Carolina’s Lowcountry: historic indigo plantations, local antique shops and boutiques, old-time riverboat tours and cultural festivals. Local Cuisine: Shellfish fresh from this morning’s catch, local Lowcountry ingredients and southern “soul food” inspired by Gullah traditions are what you’ll find on the menus of Hammock Coast’s many restaurants and cafes. Our advice? Arrive hungry. Tranquil Accommodations: Historic inns, oceanfront rentals and spacious golf resorts are among the accommodations you’ll find along the Hammock Coast. About the only option you won’t find here are roadside motels marked by neon signs. So go ahead and start planning your Hammock Coast getaway. Just be careful not to tell the world about it. Once you’ve experienced this behind-the-scenes hideaway, you’re probably going to want to ensure this alluring place remain hidden. TENNESSEE

A Breathtaking Family Adventure People all over the world have discovered that Tennessee sounds good to them. Blessed with four distinct seasons and a relatively mild climate, the state is a perfect vacation spot at any time of the year. Between the mighty Mississippi and the Great Smoky Mountains lie five hundred miles of breathtaking scenery, historic treasures and “fun” family adventures. Of course, mile after mile you’ll hear some of your favorite music, from country to blues, bluegrass to soul — not to mention Elvis! Strolling through the state’s beautiful wilderness areas, sounds of clear mountain waterfalls and burbling streams and brooks ride the wind. The cries of eagles and the melodies from the many songbirds native to Tennessee add their notes of cheer. Hikers murmur in soft, awed voices as they survey a picture-perfect view. Exclamations of delight as families navigate whitewater rapids fill the air. And the splendid stillness of a glorious Tennessee sunset touches each lucky witness. As the sun goes down, our cities turn up their lights and crank up the music – from Beale Street to Music City’s lively downtown area, “The

District” – city streets reverberate with exhilarating sounds. Fun seekers are drawn to Tennessee by boot scootin’ boogie clubs, the sounds of music, rides and laughter in the Smokies’ gateway cities, symphonies on the lawn, railroad ballads and the rejoicing of the hallelujah choirs! Small towns have their own particular style of fun with festivals and events. Fiddling and old time bluegrass bring life to Appalachian crowds. Wait till you hear the down-home routines of Jack Daniel’s local guides or capture the excitement at Knoxville’s Dogwood Arts Festival or Roan Mountain’s Rhododendron Festival. And sometimes it’s the sound of one voice that draws a crowd, because in Tennessee we love to celebrate the art of storytelling – one of our oldest traditions. But then we love to celebrate a lot of traditions – the American Bald Eagle, catfish, poke sallat, white squirrels, mules, Tennessee’s Walking Horse, rivers – the list is endless. You can be as laid back or as up tempo as you want. There is enough fun spread out across the year and the miles to bring a smile to anyone’s face. In Tennessee, we even make education sound fun! “Oohs” and

WEST VIRGINIA

Wild and Wonderful West Virginia has four distinct seasons. In the low-lying areas and valleys, including the western regions of the state and the Eastern Panhandle, winters are mild and summers are warm but pleasant. In the central portions of the state and the more mountainous areas, including the Potomac Highlands, winters are colder, with a greater

chance of snow, and summers are mild. Ride the whitewater between sheer sandstone cliffs, or paddle through morning mist on a serene lake. Bike along meandering country roads, river-winding rail trails or truly technical single tracks down steep mountainsides.

Lie back and watch sparkling night skies, or look all around you for diverse botanical wonders. Admire mile after mile of unspoiled splendor in every season - from breathtaking mountain vistas to quiet glades of rhododendron and bird song. KENTUCKY

The Bluegrass State ~ You're Going to Love it Here Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, is known the world over for its special and diverse natural beauty. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to enjoy the scenery no matter what the season. A great way to see it all is to follow Kentucky’s designated Scenic Byways. Chosen for their appeal in portraying the geographic beauty, all also have historical and cultural significance. Some byways travel past limestone palisades, waterfalls, and spring houses, skirting magnificent horse farms rimmed in fences of stone and plant. Some routes are lined with stately mansions, quaint homes and country

churches, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Old Frankfort Pike, chosen one of the nation’s top ten byways, features savanna woodlands reminiscent of the Bluegrass landscape before colonial settlement. No matter what season, Kentucky has a mild climate. Summers can be very warm, but cool evenings are not unusual. Spring and Fall only require a light coat for evenings. In the winter, the moderate amount of snow is perfect for skiing and sleigh riding. From the huge lakes to festive river towns, Kentucky’s Western Waterlands Region offers sun and fun for the entire family! You will find surprises on every stop of the road.

One of Kentucky’s giant outdoor recreation areas is the Land Between the Lakes – Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley area. Every member of the family will find something here for a great vacation. You can’t help but have fun surrounded by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which together form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in the United States. Kentucky Lake is nationally known for crappie fishing and inland sailing. Lake Barkley’s countless bays, inlets, and sparsely developed shoreline are perfect for exploring and quiet relaxation.

The 40-mile long peninsula that lies between these huge lakes – Land Between The Lakes – is a World Biosphere Reserve with 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline for waterfront and RV camping, swimming, fishing, riding, and hiking. Private and state resorts on both lakes provide every kind of vacation option, and there are plenty of attractions for days off the water. Western Kentucky is rich in music history. The father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, was born in Rosine in Ohio County; while W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, called Henderson home for 10 years. John Prine, Merle Travis and the Everly

Brothers have Muhlenberg County ties; Boots Randolph was born in Trigg county. If you’re ready to relax and have some fun, you’re going to love it here! For Kentucky travel information, call 1-800-225-TRIP (8747). Kentucky Department of Travel. Visit Kentucky web site: www.kentuckytourism.com ¤

Shore to Shore Adventure in KY’s Southern Shorelines By Kathy Witt Who needs an ocean? The Kentucky Southern Shorelines Region has more miles of freshwater shoreline than Florida’s entire coastline – and it ripples peacefully along Dale Hollow Lake, Green River Lake and Lake Cumberland. This 10-county region also encompasses Amish communities, historic landmarks, inviting downtowns, the

Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and exciting year-round events. Inland Water Paradise:Water worshippers can visit South-Central Kentucky for scuba diving at Dale Hollow Lake, fishing in all lakes and the Cumberland River, houseboating on Lake Cumberland (“Houseboat Capital of the World”) and kayaking or canoeing on Green River Lake. Then there’s boating and water skiing at Dale Hollow Lake, Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and Green River Lake State Park. You can also houseboat, or stay in a floating cabin with a personal touch, at family-owned resorts like Sulphur Creek, Hendricks Creek, Conley Bottom, Alligator II, Emerald Isle, Holmes Bend and Lee’s Ford Marina Resort. And don’t miss more than two dozen waterfalls, including Yahoo Falls – Kentucky’s highest, cascading 113 feet – in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

As Big as all Outdoors: Speaking of this 640,000-acre timberland – whose timeline has been touched by prehistoric Paleo Indians, the Civil War and coal miners – is a natural wonderland with plenty to see and do, including hiking, paddling, horseback riding and golf. Ride 600 feet into the Cumberland River Gorge on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. See what life was like in a company-mining town at the coal camps. Return to 1862 and the scene of the Civil War’s first decisive Union victory in the western theatre at Mill Springs Battlefield, Mill Springs Battlefield Visitor Center and Museum and Mill Springs National Cemetery. At Mill Springs Mill Park, marvel at one of the world’s largest vertically mounted “overshot waterwheels” at this circa 1877 grist mill. Then leave the mill and muskets behind for a visit to the region’s wineries and their tasting rooms, gift shops and scenic vistas: Lake

Cumberland Winery in Monticello, Cedar Creek Vineyards in Somerset and Sinking Valley Winery in Plato. Anyone for a glass of sweet “Prohibition Repeal Red” wine? Pretty as a Postcard: A mixed bag of must-see attractions are found along Kentucky’s Southern Shorelines: unique antiques, arts and crafts shopping; Lindsey Wilson College’s Begley Chapel, reflecting Gothic, Romanesque and Byzantine themes in its cylindrical shape topped by crowns; postcard-pretty Fountain Square in downtown Somerset; the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery near Jamestown; and Amish communities near Liberty. Many of the best local and most memorable dining experiences are located – you guessed it – on the water. Dine on Kentucky Proud fruits, veggies and meats at the restaurants at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park. You’ll also spot Kentucky Proud items like salsas, jellies, jams,

barbeque sauce, relish, honey and cobbler mix in their gift shops. Mike’s Landing at Sulfur Creek Resort is a floating restaurant known for its American-raised catfish. Guthrie’s River House tempts palettes with hand-cut steaks and mouth-watering seafood that pair with a nice wine list. And with romantic ambience to spare, The Harbor Restaurant and Tavern at Lee’s Ford Resort Marina has been featured in Southern Living Magazine and “101 Must Places to Eat in Kentucky.” Pack your fishing pole, swimsuits, scuba gear and hiking boots with a desire to explore, discover and have fun. Then head to the water and outdoor recreation heaven – Kentucky Southern Shorelines. Plan your adventure today at www.KySouthernShorelines.com!
