NORTH CAROLINA

Bear-y Popular Downtown in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Like their real-life counterparts, a group of acrylic bears emerge from hibernation each year in downtown Hendersonville in the mountains of North Carolina. This spring and summer mark the 16th year for this public art project in which 20 colorful bears take up residence along the spacious sidewalks and landscaped areas of Hendersonville’s Main Street. Officially known as Bearfootin’ on

Main, the project has drawn tens of thousands of visitors over the years and raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for local charities. Each bear is painted with its own theme by a local artist and kept under wraps until a special reveal ceremony on the plaza of First Citizens Bank. This year’s reveal is May 11. The bears are then placed in an art walk formation along Main Street until Oct. 20, when they are auctioned

for charity in front of the historic Henderson County Courthouse. “It’s a whimsical art project that has become bear-y popular over the years,” says Henderson County tourism director Beth Carden. “The bears come in all shapes and sizes. People love to take the art walk brochure and find as many as they can.” The bears are especially popular with children by day and wind up in

more than a few selfies at night as young adults make their way to and from the pubs and taprooms on Main Street. Hendersonville’s pedestrianfriendly Main Street is one of the most vibrant in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers a nice mix of shops, artist galleries and attractions, along with 25 independent restaurants.

Popular spots include the Mast General Store, Hands On! Children’s Museum, Appalachian Pinball Museum and the downtown location of North Carolina’s state theater, the Flat Rock Playhouse. For information about Hendersonville getaways, call 800-828-4244 or go to www.VisitHendersonvilleNC.org. ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina’s Hammock Coast – Your Destination with Southern Charm

Where is the Hammock Coast SC? Well, take a peek at the coastal area between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. For years, Georgetown County, known as South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, has quietly given beach lovers, golfers, families, outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs a vacation destination infused with Southern charm and natural beauty. Made up of the communities of Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Litchfield Beach, Georgetown and Andrews, each area has its own distinct personality, which combined, form the unique attraction of this area. You won’t have trouble claiming your spot on our beaches. Garden City, Litchfield and Pawleys Island all have spacious beaches and pristine salt marshes for soaking up the sun, exploring or catching some fish and blue crabs for dinner. Award winning golf, with more than 13 courses within a 15-minute drive, dots our area. Many are built on former rice plantations giving a graciously Southern golf experience.

Three of Golf Magazines’ “Top 100 You Can Play” are here and Pawleys Island was named one of the top ten “Golf Islands” in the world by Links Magazine. Pawleys Island, the oldest Seaside Resort in America, continues to be a great place to enjoy a quiet, laid-back vacation. As the birthplace of the rope hammock, relaxation has a long history here. The actual island has no commercial development; however, just over the short causeway, there are first class restaurants and boutique shopping for when (if!) you want a break from relaxing on the beach or the porch. Known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina, Murrells Inlet is a fishing village on a protected inlet, and boasts some of the best seafood in the entire South! The Murrells Inlet Marshwalk is a boardwalk on the banks of the Inlet, and allows visitors to truly experience the salt-marsh ecosystem along with restaurants, shops, parasailing, jet skiing and fishing excursions.

Between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield Beach, you will discover Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Huntington Beach State Park, recognized as one of the top birding spots in North America, also offers camping and access to a pristine undeveloped beach. Brookgreen Gardens houses the most significant collection of figurative sculpture in a beautiful outdoor setting and the only accredited zoo on the coast of SC. For the history buff, Georgetown is South Carolina’s third oldest city, founded in 1729. It is also the probable site of the first European settlement in North America in 1526. It boasts a charming downtown

historic district with restaurants and boutique shopping along the Harborwalk. Local tour companies provide a glimpse into the history of the area by land and by river. Andrews, located 18 miles inland from Georgetown, offers the perfect place to experience the natural world. From sporting clays to kayaking along the winding Black River, Andrews is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. For the foodie, you won’t have any trouble finding an amazing meal on the Hammock Coast, our area is dotted with great little restaurants, staffed by award winning chefs. Fresh seafood, fresh produce and wonderful culinary talent equal many “blog-worthy” meals.

Fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation are plentiful. With five rivers coming together to meet the ocean, and vast undeveloped land holdings, wildlife is plentiful. A number of guides and outfitters are available to get you out on the water in a boat, kayak, paddleboard or surfboard. Come visit the Hammock Coast and rediscover life with no schedules, rediscover your family, rediscover nature and rediscover yourself. The only itinerary you need is a tide chart! Relax And Unwind In Ohio Amish Country Nightlife in Amish Country takes two forms: a serene evening outdoors or an evening enjoying live entertainment. Sometimes, it has a little bit of both! In the countryside, fireflies dance across farmers’ fields. Listen for the clip clop of horses on their way home and the lowing cattle, settling in for the evening. Sit beside a campfire while roasting marshmallows and telling spooky stories. Let the outdoor sensations help you unwind from a long day of exploring. For deep belly laughs, inspiring music or captivating storylines, you can also take in a show at one of the several premier theaters in Amish

Country. Safe for the whole family, both are home to unforgettable characters and non-stop laughter. The Ohio Star Theater opened a brand new performance space in 2017 on the Dutch Valley campus in Sugarcreek. It seats 500 guests and provides a host of entertainment from musicals to comedy shows. Another venue for live performances is the Amish Country Theater, which relocated to Berlin this year and features comedy and variety shows. The American Bus Association ranked them as a Top100 Event in America. Spend your evening with family and friends at a memorable performance.

Look to the calendar of events for more nightlife activities happening throughout the year. Festivals like the Harvest Festival in Berlin or Holmes County Antique Festival in Millersburg extend into evening hours. Many offer live music outdoors during the summer months, such as Music on the Square in Berlin on Fridays and Saturdays. Hotel Millersburg has music in the courtyard on the weekends, and Swissters also presents a variety of musical performances. Whether you’re looking for a quiet evening outside or to enjoy a performance, you’ll find it in Ohio Amish Country. ¤

The route starts just south of Paducah and follows historic Hwy 68 (a state scenic byway) to Maysville through 60 communities. Last year there were over 1000 sales! This year, the Sale is anticipated to be bigger than ever with more yard sales setting up all along the route! The 400 Mile Sale was started 13 years ago as an economic boost to rural communities by encouraging people to get off the interstates and parkways and rediscover the small towns. The route takes one through communities such as Sharpe, Draffenville, Fairview, Elkton, Auburn, Wisdom, Edmonton, Gravel Switch, Perryville, Wilmore, and Mayslick and larger communities such as Benton, Cadiz, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green, Campbellsville, Lebanon, Harrodsburg and Paris. Yard sales,

food vendors, and crafters will be set up in every community and at many of the homes on or near Hwy 68. Antique shops and specialty stores all along the way will be having side walk sales and discount specials. People from all over plan their vacations each year around the 400 Mile Sale. Some come to see what treasures they can find. Others just enjoy traveling this scenic route, enjoying Kentucky’s beautiful landscape and historic communities and meeting all the friendly folks along the way. In 2015, yard sale shoppers came from 34 states and 7 counties including Taiwan, Canada, Korea, Switzerland, Germany and Japan and spent over $2.3 million dollars at yard sales and shops during the 4-day sale across Kentucky!

Nearly $400,000 spent on lodging, over $300,000 on food, $426,000 on gas and $1.2 million spent on sale items. American History You Can Feel Jackson, Michigan wasted no time making its mark on national history. One humid summer day on the outskirts of town in 1854, the Republican Party was formed by a group of men and women driven to end slavery. The people of Jackson then took action to fight for what they believed in, creating Michigan’s first volunteer regiment for the Civil War. Many not on the battlefield were helping by transporting slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. When the Industrial Revolution came around, Jackson was at the forefront thanks to the manpower Michigan’s first state prison provided. For nearly 100 years, the world’s largest walled prison made goods that shipped across the country. When America’s demand for the automobile exploded, Jackson was ready. Twentyfour automobile manufacturers built thousands of cars that put Americans behind the wheel. Discover Jackson’s role in American history for yourself. Welcome to Dauphin Island AL!

Come and enjoy our little piece of paradise, dip your toes in the Gulf of Mexico waters, get sand between your toes and just RELAX on Dauphin Island AL. Come stroll some of our beaches, charter a boat to fish or to cruise, dine in our special eateries and visit gift shops and boutiques for that special item or gift. In our busy world, we plan for tomorrow, but can’t live it

until it arrives. We invite you to come enjoy Dauphin Island – TODAY. Standing guard between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Dauphin Island is a true barrier island – complete with dunes, maritime forests, salt marshes, tidal flats and two freshwater lakes. Named “barrier” for their role in protection of the mainland from nature’s fury of storm waves,

barrier islands also prevent the inflow of salt water from the Gulf into the bays and sounds by forming a physical barrier. This process is essential to maintaining the nursery characteristics of the estuarine ecosystem. Entry to the island is made by crossing a three-mile long high-rise bridge, which was opened in July

1982 after the original drawbridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 3/4 miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated

that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations. Visit dauphinislandchamber.com or call 877-532-8744 for details.

Premier Vacation Rentals with Boardwalk Realty Boardwalk Realty is Dauphin Island AL’s premier source for vacation rentals.
