Total Solar Eclipse 2017 Welcome to a most rare event of 2017, where viewers will be treated to a most spectacular and rare total solar eclipse will be visible across the United States, taking place on August 21, 2017, with a totality duration of 2 minutes, 4 seconds, beginning at 10:19am PDT. The last one was visible in the USA in 1979. However, August 2017 will mark the first time in nearly 99 years that this event will be easily available to people from

coast to coast. And did you know that the August 2017 event will be the first one whose totality path lies completely within the United States since 1776? It will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles. Folks who come to any of the numerous fabulous viewing spots across the United States are in for a truly unforgettable experience, so be ready to plan ahead with a fun-filled

MI. The seaplane operates from Houghton, MI. Open Memorial Day through mid-Sept. only. Lodging/transportation packages offered; all inclusive kayak eco tours offered. Groups welcome. Two camper cabins are offered at Windigo/Washington Harbor. Rock Harbor Lodge 866-644-2003 www.rockharborlodge.com ¤

unique family vacation during this time. Remember that if you do plan to observe the August 2017 eclipse in one of the many popular viewing areas, NEVER look directly at the sun without proper eye protection, except when the solar disk is completely occluded (during the brief period of totality). Otherwise serious and permanent eye damage can result. “Proper eye protection” includes specially made solar filters, eclipse glasses or No. 14 welder’s glass. You can also observe the eclipse indirectly, by making a pinhole camera or watching shadows cast by

trees. The gaps between leaves act as natural pinholes. A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth. The Moon is directly between the Sun and Earth and casts a shadow on our planet. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse. But if you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. A solar eclipse happens at New Moon. But don’t happen at every New Moon. The Moon has to be between the Sun and Earth for a solar eclipse to occur. The only lunar phase when that happens is New Moon. Everyone in the continental

U.S. will see at least a partial eclipse this August. If you have clear skies on the eclipse day, the moon will cover at least 48 percent of the Sun’s surface. And that’s from the northern tip of Maine. Totality lasts a maximum of 2 minutes and 40.2 seconds. That’s it. To experience that length, you’ll need to be slightly south of Carbondale, Illinois, in Giant City State Park. Only one large city has a fabulous view – congratulations if you’re one of the 609,000 people lucky enough to live in Nashville. The city center and parts north of it will experience over two minutes of totality.

We’re on Your Way, So Stop in and Enjoy Mt. Vernon Illinois! Situated on the crossroads of I-64 and I-57, Mt. On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse path will stretch across the entire United States, reaching its point of greatest duration just 50 miles south of Mt. Vernon. This region in southern Illinois is not only in the path of the 2017 eclipse, but also the 2024 eclipse, making it a unique location for field experts and visitors alike. We invite you to stay & play with us in Mt. Vernon for Totality Fest with live entertainment, events and more all weekend long.
