A Tropical Island Getaway on Florida’s Gulf Coast Located approximately 55 miles south of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Siesta Key is an eight-milelong barrier island connected to Sarasota by two bridges. Founded in 1846, there are now approximately 24,000 full- and part-time residents of Siesta Key. Siesta Beach was named one of America’s Top 10 beaches for 2004 by the Travel Channel and Best Sand Beach. It is ranked second of Florida’s top 10 Beaches for 2003 by the Travel Channel and is one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., according to the Scientist Dr. Beach, who rates beach cleanliness.

While all the conveniences of modern life are easily accessible, Siesta Key is still remote enough to give one a feeling of old Florida. Bursting with lush foliage, mature trees and tropical flowering shrubs line the winding routes to the village and the beaches. The beaches are refreshingly natural, with protected wild sea oats and mangroves providing a protective habitat for the scores of native island birds that share the island, as well as the dolphins, manatees and other aquatic wildlife living just offshore. “White quartz sand perfect for castle building,” and stays cool on hot days!
Old Florida Charm at Bungalow Beach Resort on Anna Maria Island FL Arriving at the Bungalow Beach Resort on Anna Maria Island changes your mood almost immediately. Just past the parking lot on this quick little bend of a gulf front road, you find yourself passing through the property’s gazebo entrance. It’s an almost ceremonial rite of passage that requires you to leave your worries behind, live in your bathing suit and sandals and relinquish yourself to peace and serenity. To the unsuspecting guest, it’s an oasis within an island. Most guests are surprised to learn the property is actually a former army barracks. Today, each of the 15 charming cedar bungalows has been magically transformed into a romantic little getaway that preserves its 1930s clapboard construction and old Florida island charm. It’s a very relaxing place to stay. This beautiful place has bungalows that range from one room studio to three-bedrooms, and feature white wicker furniture, and the original architectural design of hardwood floors, beadboard walls and wood-beamed cathedral ceilings. Stepping inside one differs from most hotels. The white and beige interiors convince you immediately that the place is impeccably clean and fresh. INDIANA
Create Memories in Indiana Looking for something to do a little closer to home this year? Looking to make your dollar stretch further, but still create memories? Try on these fun, semi-outdoor, wear-yourself-out activities. Go caving - Indiana has four Marengo Cave, Indiana Caverns, Bluespring Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns. All offer tours daily, but each offers something a little extra - try spelunking (cave exploring) at Marengo, a boat ride at Indiana, overnight at Bluespring or explore the village above ground at Squire Boone.
Go fishing - on Lake Michigan. Bring your pole and charter a boat for a big catch. You still might need a jacket though for those cold lakeeffect winds. Afterwards, grab an Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore guidebook at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center, then play on the beach, climb the dunes, hike the trail system and take a guided nature tour. Go Geocaching - grab a treasure map (your GPS device) and look for treasure. Some of Indiana’s hot spots are in South (Mitchell) and North (Shipshewana, Warsaw & Plymouth). Find more at Geocaching.com.
Don’t have a GPS device? Northern Indiana’s destinations will provide one. Go explore - at a state park. Indiana State Parks offer lots to explore, places to stay and fun things to learn. Brown County State Park offers indoor water fun, Turkey Run State Park has great hiking trails and Spring Mill State Park offers historical village exploration. Go swimming - There are plenty of places to swim indoors and outdoors. Here are just a few of the indoor ones: Big Splash Adventure (French Lick), Caribbean Cove (Indianapolis) and Splash Universe (Shipshewana). And
these particular water park fun spots offer overnight accommodations. Go train - Take a scenic train ride on one of seven Indiana railroads - Whitewater Valley Railroad (Connersville), CKS Railroad (Knightstown), French Lick Scenic Railway, Hesston Steam Railroad (La Porte), Indiana Transportation Museum (Noblesville), Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum (North Judson) and the Spirit of Jasper (Jasper). Or
try all seven. All offer themed rides, such as dinner trains, train robberies, festival and holiday trains. Whatever the experience, you’ll love restarting your engine in Indiana!
