100th Anniversary Hendersonville, NC Street Dances
During the summer of 1918, as America’s victorious soldiers returned from World War I, the citizens of Hendersonville, North Carolina, took to the streets to welcome the troops home with a celebration of dance. One hundred years later, this special tradition lives on in Hendersonville’s friendly downtown framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 100th anniversary of the street dances takes place every Monday

this summer from July 9 through Aug. 13. The dances have stayed true to their roots over the passing of a century. The sounds of fiddles and banjos still fill the cool evening air as people of all ages follow in step to the caller as he lays out simple steps and movements to follow. Each week features a traditional string band, as well as a performance by a team of cloggers from the
region. The Hendersonville Street Dances are believed to be the oldest of their kind in the nation and are part of the Blue Ridge Music Trails. While the dances officially take place from 7-9 p.m., caller Walt Puckett hosts a 30-minute class for beginners from 6:30-7 p.m. During the class, Puckett teaches the basics of square dancing, including such traditional Appalachian moves as
Right Hand Across, Open the Garden Gate and the Shoe Fly Swing. Visitors from across the nation are encouraged to put on their dancing shoes for a toe-tapping good time, or simply bring a lawn chair and sit back and enjoy the sounds of mountain heritage music. Seating area opens at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free to the dances, which are alcohol-free.
