Ten tips for carefree summer photography The summer is filled with time outdoors, fun-filled weekends with friends, family outings and so much more. Perhaps most of all, it’s filled with wonderful moments that turn into treasured memories, allowing summer fun to stay for months and years. Photographs are a great way to ensure that memories stay alive. But all too often, great picture-taking opportunities are missed because people fear a camera will hinder the carefree lifestyle of summer. Single-use cameras make it possible to photograph everything from water fights to sand-sculpting contests to camping trips, in an easy, enjoyable, hassle-free manner. Following are 10 simple tips guaranteed to make capturing the memories as much fun as making them:

1. Wet ‘n’ Wild – Canoe trips and days at the beach offer terrific photo opportunities, but you can’t enjoy them if you’re worried about getting the camera wet. Instead, tote a rugged, weatherproof/waterproof single-use camera that can be used in depths of water up to 8 feet. 2. Be Prepared – When planning a vacation or other outing, be sure to take along plenty of batteries, film, and/or single-use cameras. These items can be considerably more expensive to purchase in resort areas and amusement parks. 3. Take Me Out To The Ball Game – Photos of the softball game can be frustrating to look at when little Johnny is nothing more than a speck in the outfield. Some single-use cameras are equipped with telefoto lens to let users get closer to the action. Some are loaded with 400

speed film, providing versatility when taking pictures outdoors. 4. Experiment – Summer’s the time for breaking rules! Don’t be afraid to experiment. Often the most interesting, “trophy” photos are those that were completely spontaneous and totally unconventional. 5. Kids Can Do – If you’re traveling with children, allow them to photograph their own favorite summertime memories. Single-use cameras are great for outdoor photos and are easy enough for even a 5-year-old to use. (It will also keep them from asking to borrow mom and dad’s expensive camera!) 6. Keep A Journal – If you’re on vacation, keep a small reporter’s notebook handy with your camera. Jot down facts about the pictures you take to help you remember special people and places later.

7. What A View! – A picture is worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to describing a breathtaking ocean view or scenic landscape. Even if you’re hesitant to bring an expensive camera on a hiking trip, you can still get a high-quality, wide-angle photo of the Grand Canyon. A panoramic single-use camera provides unique 31/2-by-10inch prints. 8. Capture Feelings – The most treasured photos are often those that capture a specific mood or emotion. Instead of trying to capture the whole scene, experiment with close-ups that show feeling, like a child’s broad grin as he licks a dripping ice cream cone. 9. Don’t Leave Home Without It – The easiest tip of all is often the one people neglect. You never know when a simple moment will turn into a special memory, so don’t be caught without a camera. Many cameras are small and light enough to fit in a backpack, jacket pocket or just about anywhere.

10. Keep The Memories Alive – There are lots of great ways to enjoy your photos once the summer has passed. A candid picture accompanied by a brief note is a wonderful way to stay in touch with faraway friends and relatives. Putting a family scrapbook together can be almost as much fun as “being there.” ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina coast features 200 miles of sun and surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more

international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf,

the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of

maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations

and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport
