Bristol Caverns is one of the oldest and most beautiful attractions in northeast Tennessee. The Caverns are located at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain Region in Bristol, TN. The remarkable caverns were carved by the ancient Underground River from the core of the earth some 200-400 million years ago. A strange and exciting experience awaits you far below the earth’s surface when you explore the beautiful and majestic Bristol Caverns. The paved and well lighted walkways wind through the vaulted chambers as you tour the Caverns and its timeless beauty. The tour takes you to all three levels of the caverns - from Mayor Preston’s Chamber in the upper section to the winding banks of the Underground River 180 feet below on the cavern floor. The Indians used the river in the frontier days. Retrace the paths of the warriors as you explore the vast rooms, columns, arches and the varying sizes and kinds of the natural stone formations. Along the Underground River, the beautiful formations reflect in the stream’s waters. Peer over Lover’s Leap, view the breathtaking Bridal Veil and Entrance Hall formations. Concealed, indirect lighting highlights the natural colors and beauty of the formations. Millions of years old, the formations display rich veins of minerals, giving
them beautiful colors of red, gray, blue, brown and sparkling white. Stalagmites and stalactites range in size from larger than tree trunks to smaller than straws. Some of the formations have grown together forming massive columns reaching from floor to ceiling in the lofty rooms. Bristol Caverns is open year-round except Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Guided tours leave the gift shop about every 20 minutes and last approximately one hour. SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina Coast Features 200 Miles of Sun and Surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round
and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf. Hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the ocean-
side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town) and others. Continuing south you’ll find the Hammock Coast comprised of Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, DeBordieu Colony and southern Garden City. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and
condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture
In Need of a Beach Escape? Beautiful Myrtle Beach with it’s sixty miles of white sandy beaches is an ideal spring vacation destination. but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport
South Carolina’s Hammock Coast®
Underneath sorbet-colored skies, you’ll find the quiet beach communities of South Carolina’s Hammock Coast: Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, DeBordieu Colony and southern Garden City. On the Hammock Coast are spacious beaches and pristine salt marshes, offering chances to soak up the sun, spirit away on a kayak or even catch fish and blue crabs for dinner. Perfectly situated between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the Hammock Coast is serviced by two major airports. Pawleys Island, one of America’s oldest seaside resorts, has been named one of the best beaches in the world. As the birthplace of the rope hammock, relaxation has a long history here. (And gave inspiration the region’s moniker as the “Hammock Coast.”) Litchfield Beach, just north of Pawleys, earned TripAdvisor’s designation as one of the Top 10 beaches in America! Murrells Inlet, known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” was originally a fishing village on a protected inlet. The southern portion 4
of Garden City overlooks Murrells Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean, offering stunning views in every direction. And DeBordieu Colony offers a stunning beach near historic Georgetown, where history comes alive at five museums. Between the business districts of Murrells Inlet and Litchfield are two of the Hammock Coast’s most famous attractions – Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Recognized as one of the top birding spots on the East Coast, the

state park offers camping and access to an undeveloped beach. Just across Ocean Highway is Brookgreen Gardens, a 9,127-acre botanical and sculpture garden that has drawn visitors since 1931. Dotting the Hammock Coast are also several award-winning golf courses, many built on former rice plantations that provide a graciously Southern golf experience. Three of Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 You Can Play” are here, in fact. Visit HammockCoastSC.com today for more information! ¤

Fill your Photo Albums with the Memories of a Lifetime in North Carolina The sun wakes in the eastern waves of the Atlantic Ocean, warms the sparkling sands and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the worldrenowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the green mountain ranges of North Carolina. Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the
mountainous landscape, and one peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern United States. North Carolina’s Piedmont stretches from the western mountain regions to the eastern shore. Some areas gather more than 30 inches of snow annually, making Piedmont a prime location for year-round recreation. Regional summers see low humidity and cool shady hideaways never lacking. Fishing, hiking, and picnicking maintain great popularity for summer adventurers, and skiing, snowboarding, and
sledding is just around the corner with the winter snows! Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches and sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge, a magnificent sand dune, is the highest along the eastern coast, decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the blue ocean. Local wetlands also offer beautiful picnicking spots and a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of North Carolina coast overreaches every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands
present the perfect locations for shelling or just a quite day on the beach and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available for the most
lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built on the natural luxuries of eastern US. Festivals and regional celebrations add even more excitement to the year in all regions of the beautiful North Carolina. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolina expanses, where perfection is year-round. ¤
