TRAVEL

Don’t Break These Rules for Family Travel Traveling with the entire family can be an adventure in and of itself. Kids get tired and cranky as do moms and dads. Lighten up! Family travel is supposed to be enjoyable and fun. Follow the rules below to make your next family vacation the best one yet. Rules for Family Travel Choose a family vacation that’s right for the whole family. Before scheduling your next family vacation, vote on it. Gather everyone’s input and weigh the pros and cons of each travel vacation idea. If a vacation is vetoed, explain why. Kids need to understand that while their effort is appreciated, their vacation idea may not be feasible at this time. Select the right time for a family vacation. It’s important to schedule a family vacation that works for

everyone. If you kids look forward to summer camp each year, don’t schedule a vacation during this time. Gather the entire family together for a ‘vacation meeting’ and find out when everyone would like to go on vacation. Pack lightly. There’s no reason to bring your entire closet with you on vacation. Besides, do you want to carry a ton of luggage? Remember this travel rule, “When in doubt, leave it out.” Smaller children should choose one or two stuffed animals or toys they’d like to bring with them. Books are always a good idea. Older kids will probably want to bring their iPod, MP3, etc. Try to convince them to leave their electronic gadgets at home. After all, it’s a vacation.

Everyone is supposed to be relaxing and getting away from it all. Don’t travel with full size personal care products – bring travel size products. Forget something? You can always buy it. If you can’t find your favorite products, try something new. Sometimes, it’s nice to ‘check out’ products that are popular with the locals. Bring a digital camera to capture fun family vacation moments. Make frequent stops on your road trip. Whether you travel by RV, car, minivan, or SUV, stop at rest stops and parks. It’s good to get out and stretch your legs – the exercise will do everyone good. Plus, smaller kids could become cranky from the long drives. The fresh air will tire them out

Visit the Place That Inspires Dolly Parton In the foothills of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville, Tennessee is a special place whose tourism and travel areas are filled with breathtaking scenery, warm people and a unique cultural history. That’s why Sevierville and the Smoky Mountains have served as inspiration for some of Tennessee’s biggest musical hits – and the hometown of Tennessee’s biggest star, Dolly Parton. Dolly was born and raised in Sevierville and got her start in the music industry right downtown, singing live on the Cas Walker radio show. With her songs, she has described the beauty and richness of Sevierville and the Smoky Mountains and inspired many people to visit her “Smoky Mountain Home.” These days, visitors to Sevierville usually make a stop at the bronze statue of a young Dolly perched atop a rock with guitar in hand for a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity before visiting her Dollywood theme park. Even with her international appeal, Dolly Parton is only part of what draws people to visit Sevierville. Shopping in Sevierville is a must especially because it is home to Tennessee’s largest authentic outlet

mall, Tanger Five Oaks Factory Outlet Center. This 110 store complex features name-brand stores such as Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors and more, all stocked with designer merchandise at deep discount prices. Of course, Sevierville also features a variety of art galleries, boutiques and antique stores where shoppers may find gifts and souvenirs that perfectly capture the feeling and scenery of their Smoky Mountain vacation. Family fun is all around Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains. From amazing acrobatic performances at shows like Cirque de Chine, to the eight exciting go-kart tracks at NASCAR SpeedPark, plus mini golf, museums, aquariums, theme parks and more, this resort is packed with family-friendly activities to keep everyone busy. Catch a game with the Tennessee Smokies, the AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, then take a walk on the wild side at animal attractions like Rainforest Adventures – one of America’s finest small zoos. See airworthy war bird aircraft and national treasures like the Doolittle Medal of Honor at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation then experience the “Best Golf in the Smokies” on the

Sevierville Golf Club’s two brand new courses. Whether you’re taking in the scenery by trail, in your car or on a helicopter flight with Scenic Helicopter Tours, natural beauty is synonymous with Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains. Views stretch for miles across the rolling foothills into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most visited national park. While the park’s historic buildings may convey how early Appalachian settlers lived, their spirit is best conveyed by Sevierville’s residents. Warm smiles and genuine care for everyone are hallmarks of the area’s southern hospitality. Experience this first hand by staying in Sevierville during a trip to the Smokies. Guests will find a variety of accommodations ranging from indoor / outdoor water park resorts like Wilderness at the Smokies, to convenient hotels like Fairfield Inn & Suites Five Oaks and even luxury cabin resorts like Oak Haven Resort.

which means they’ll sleep for most of the road trip. Bring snacks. Keep children happy by packing their favorite snacks, but make sure you bring plenty with you. If you run out, you can always buy

more. Have fun! If children start to fight, whine, or complain, turn those frowns upside down with a hug and smile. Laughter really is the best medicine! ¤

You’ll Feel Right at Home in Marion, Ohio Discover President Harding’s home and monument or attend a top-named entertainment show at the Palace Theatre. Eat your way through the fall Popcorn Festival downtown. Experience popcorn history and refurbished popcorn wagons under the big top in the Wyandot Popcorn Museum within Heritage Hall. Bluefusion offers family-fun or go find mini golf, roller skating or geocaching. We have a rich industrial and train history at the Huber Machinery Museum and Marion Union Station. Here are just a few… Maryland is a child-friendly state and the perfect place for a family vacation. A logical choice is a trip to Baltimore, where you can explore the acclaimed National Aquarium in Baltimore, visit the nation’s top-rated children’s zoo at The Baltimore Zoo or work at a pretend cannery at the

Baltimore Museum of Industry. But there’s plenty for a family to do beyond the boundaries of Baltimore. Consider a hiking adventure in one of our state parks, enroll in a family sailing course on the Chesapeake Bay, or step back in time at any of our historic attractions. Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in your

mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains, or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. And if the mood should strike, you can even stick around and have your wedding

Take an art class. Visit a nature center with hands-on activities and wildlife displays. Shop in our small towns and eat at our family owned restaurants. Whatever you want you can find it in the Endless Mountains of Northeastern PA. Request your annual guide and calendar of events today!! For more information, visit www.EndlessMountains.org. ¤

here. Maryland is home to the historic old chapel that hosted the weddings of Babe Ruth, Tiny Tim and Debbie Reynolds. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea kayak and paddle through the marsh grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in

Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. No matter what the interest, you’re sure to find a wealth of information by logging on to www.visitmaryland.org. This article courtesy of Maryland Office of Tourism. 1-866-639-3526.
