KENTUCKY

Winter Hiking and Wildlife Viewing Opportunities Abound in Kentucky If winter weather brings cabin fever or the winter doldrums, that’s the time to get outdoors in Kentucky. In many ways, winter is the best season for enjoying the wild side in the Bluegrass State, as summer humidity and high-season crowds give way to crisp air and fewer adventurers on the trails. It’s a good time to get out of the house, see all there is that is hidden by the trees in the summer and generate some heat of your own with a hike. Winter’s leafless trees reveal stunning Kentucky vistas, whether in the eastern mountains or the western lakes regions. Birds and other wildlife are more easily spotted in winter, providing an extra bonus to hikers who venture out this time of year. Great spots for winter vistas include Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in the Appalachian region and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in southwestern Kentucky. Popular places for winter hiking near Louisville include Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, whose 24 miles of trails afford impressive views of the Ohio River.

You might also want to try hiking underground, also known as spelunking. It’s a popular winter pastime since Kentucky’s many caves maintain nearly constant year-round temperatures in the mid-50s. At Mammoth Cave National Park, you can hike both below and above ground in a truly unique natural setting. Many of Kentucky’s 51 state parks feature hiking trails that are great places to get close to nature during winter. Make the excursion a cozy winter weekend at 17 state resort parks that offer lodge accommodations. At resort parks including Carter Caves, Barren River Lake, Pennyrile Forest and Lake Cumberland, you can even settle into cottages with wood-burning fireplaces after a full day on the trails. Organized hikes are an enjoyable way to share your winter hiking experience with likeminded adventurers. For example, a weekend hiking adventure offered in 2013 at Pine Mountain State Resort Park encompassed eight miles on three guided hikes in one weekend. Hikers gazed out across the Cumberland Mountains from Knobby Rock in the midst of the celebrated Blanton Forest; stood on the mountain peak

where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia adjoin; and felt the weight of history in the saddle of the Cumberland Gap Pass. They investigated a Native American camp in a sandstone rockhouse, re-lived the folk history of the legendary Chained Rock and examined a natural arch on the vaulted south slope of Pine Mountain. Now’s the time to start planning and reserving places in organized trips to experience elk, bald eagles, sandhill cranes and many other types of wildlife in their natural winter habitats. Naturalists at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park and Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park in eastern Kentucky often offer elk-watching tours on many winter weekends through March. These trips provide a close look at a majestic animal that has made a strong comeback after disappearing from the Kentucky mountains for more than a century. Elk, whose numbers now approach 10,000 after being reintroduced in Kentucky in 1997, have found reclaimed surface mine sites to their liking. Both parks have previously offered weekend packages that include lodging, some meals and transportation to and from the

viewing site. You can get tour dates and make reservations by calling Jenny Wiley at 800-325-0142 or Buckhorn Lake at 800-325-0058. Elk and another impressive mammal, the bison, also roam freely in the Elk and Bison Prairie, a 700 acre portion of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area in southwestern Kentucky. Deer, wild turkey and numerous other wildlife species thrive in the prairie, which can be enjoyed via a 3.5 mile loop road. Bald eagles also are a great attraction during winter in the lakes region of southwestern Kentucky, where their numbers swell to 150 or more as they migrate south from the Great Lakes and southern Canada. The Kentucky State Parks system has offered Eagle Watch Weekends for more than 40 years. Four parks – Kentucky Dam Village, Lake Barkley, Kenlake and Dale Hollow – have provided guided eagle tours via boat or van in January and February. Contact these parks to check offerings or to participate in one of these tours.

Sandhill cranes are another transient species making a stop in Kentucky on winter migration to states further south. Adult sandhill cranes may be more than four feet tall with a red forehead, white cheeks and a long pointed bill. Their wingspan extends six to eight feet. One of the best places to view these birds is Barren River State Resort Park in south central Kentucky. See these birds on weekend trips in January and February organized by park naturalists. More information on the trips is available by calling 800-325-0057. Birders who wish to view many less exotic species can pursue this hobby at more than 30 of the 51 state parks throughout Kentucky. So don’t sit at home this winter. Grab your camera and binoculars and discover the diverse wildlife of Kentucky. For more information about wildlife viewing or hiking in Kentucky, visit www.parks.ky.gov or www.KentuckyTourism.com. Information for this article taken from www.KentuckyTourism.com. Delightful Gift Ideas from Amish Country, Ohio Most visitors to Amish Country know about the variety of shopping available in the region. After all, Amish Country is often named one of the best places for authentic and unique gifts. You can make your Christmas shopping easy this year by following this Guide to Amish Country Gifts. Antiques: Downtown Millersburg has been a haven for antique hunters for years, and “upcycling” has hit Amish Country in a big way. Whether you are looking for a vintage door made into a coffee table or antiques that are ready to be turned into your own next project, there are dozens of stores that specialize in everything

from signs to kitchenware to clothing. Not only are antique gifts cool in a retro style, they are often one-of-a-kind. Furniture: Amish Country furniture has two important things going for it: expert craftsmanship and style. The designers have their finger on the pulse of décor trends and build with the same quality that has always come out of the region. For gifts, look for rough-edge accent pieces, which make a statement without having to match existing furniture. Quilts and Arts: This may seem like a no-brainer, but the quality of quilts that are produced in Amish Country is museum-worthy. Or consider one of

the many artists who practice their craft in the area. Ceramics, metal art, glass art and fabric art all have a prominent presence, and your purchases directly support that artist. Food: Think cheese. Think chocolate. Think wine. And then think about how easy your life becomes when you can buy a basket of fresh goodies straight from the source and have it shipped straight to the recipient. To find out where to go in Amish Country for these gifts, go to VisitAmishCountry.com or call 877-643-8824. ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina Coast Features 200 Miles of Sun and Surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years.

Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping

that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with

many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south.

At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport
