The Moon is directly between the Sun and Earth and casts a shadow on our planet. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse. But if you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. A solar eclipse happens at New Moon. But don’t happen at every New Moon. The Moon has to be between the Sun and Earth for a solar eclipse to occur. The only lunar phase when that happens is New Moon. Everyone in the continental U.S. will see at least a partial eclipse
this August. If you have clear skies on the eclipse day, the moon will cover at least 48 percent of the Sun’s surface. And that’s from the northern tip of Maine. You want to be on the center line. This probably isn’t a revelation, but the moon’s shadow is round. The longest eclipse occurs at its center line because that’s where you’ll experience the moon’s shadow’s full width. It’s all about totality. Only totality reveals the true celestial spectacle: the diamond ring, the
Sun’s glorious corona, strange colors in our sky, and seeing stars in the daytime. Totality lasts a maximum of 2 minutes and 40.2 seconds. That’s it. To experience that length, you’ll need to be slightly south of Carbondale, Illinois, in Giant City State Park. Only one large city has a fabulous view – congratulations if you’re one of the 609,000 people lucky enough to live in Nashville. The city center and parts north of it will experience over two minutes of totality.
Total Solar Eclipse 2017 Welcome to a most rare event of 2017, where viewers will be treated to a most spectacular and rare total solar eclipse will be visible across the United States, taking place on August 21, 2017, with a totality duration of 2 minutes, 4 seconds, beginning at 10:19am PDT. The last one was visible in the USA in 1979. However, August 2017 will mark the first time in nearly 99 years that this event will be easily available to people from coast to coast. And did you know that the August 2017 event will be the first one whose totality path lies completely within the United States since 1776? It will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles. Folks who come to any of the
numerous fabulous viewing spots across the United States are in for a truly unforgettable experience, so be ready to plan ahead with a fun-filled unique family vacation during this time.
