NORTH CAROLINA
Best of the Blue Ridge ~ Hendersonville, North Carolina
One of the best destinations in the Blue Ridge Mountains is Hendersonville, North Carolina – a vibrant and inviting town that’s not too big and not too small. In the last decade, Hendersonville has emerged from the shadow of nearby Asheville with possibilities as wide as its Main Street sidewalks. A pedestrian-friendly downtown greets visitors with attractions, museums, boutiques, galleries, shops, breweries and two dozen locally owned restaurants. During a recent visit, veteran travel writer Randy Mink of Chicago penned this description of Hendersonville’s Main Street: “Beautifully landscaped with flower beds, hanging baskets, planter boxes, shade trees, benches and old-time lampposts, the serpentine thoroughfare rates as one of the nation’s most attractive smalltown shopping districts.” With attractions like the Appalachian Pinball Museum, Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Lab, Pisgah Forest Gem Mine and HVL Pedal & Brews pedal pub, travelers can focus an entire trip on the downtown area. However, much more awaits in the Blue Ridge countryside.
Outdoor adventure is the hallmark of DuPont State Forest. Several iconic waterfalls draw visitors, while 90 miles of trails encourage hiking, biking and horseback riding. Jump Off Rock’s mountaintop park offers more scenic beauty with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains. Hendersonville’s Cheers! Trail showcases wineries, breweries and cideries. Locations include Sierra Nevada Brewing, one of the nation’s largest craft breweries, and Bold Rock Hard Cider, the nation’s largest craft cider producer. Seven picturesque wineries are on the trail, including two mountaintop vineyards. In the tucked-away Village of Flat Rock, Broadway-style shows are presented at the famed Flat Rock Playhouse, while across the street is the Carl Sandburg Home, former residence of the Pulitzer Prizewinning “Poet of the People.” Hendersonville is also the apple capital of North Carolina in late summer and fall. KENTUCKY
Kentucky ~ You’re Going to Love it Here! With six national areas, 50 state parks, and hundreds of recreational, natural, historic, and cultural attractions, Kentucky abounds in travel opportunities. From the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky through the rolling bluegrass of our heartland to the massive lakes and flatlands of the west, Kentucky has much to offer. Each of Kentucky’s travel regions has its own charm and personality. From the huge lakes to festive river towns, Kentucky’s Western Waterlands offers sun and fun for the entire family. You will find surprises on every stop of the road. One of Kentucky’s giant outdoor recreation areas is the Land Between the Lakes – Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley area. Every member of the family will find something here for a great vacation. You can’t help but have fun surrounded by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which together form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in the United States. Kentucky Lake is nationally known for crappie fishing and inland sailing. Lake Barkley’s countless bays
and inlets and sparsely developed shoreline are perfect for exploring and quiet relaxation. The 40-mile long peninsula that lies between these huge lakes – Land Between The Lakes – is a World Biosphere Reserve with 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline for waterfront and RV camping, swimming, fishing, riding, and hiking. Private and state resorts on both lakes provide every kind of vacation option, and there are plenty of attractions for days off the water. Kentucky is rich in music history. The father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, was born in Rosine in Ohio County; while W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, called Henderson home for 10 years. John Prine, Merle Travis and the Everly Brothers have Muhlenberg County ties; Boots Randolph was born in Trigg county. The Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum, headquartered in Owensboro, puts on the annual ROMP festival, June 22-25, 2022. Thousands of fans from all over the world gather at Daviess County Yellow Creek Park to hear the best bluegrass/folk-rock to be found anywhere. Additional offerings
at ROMP Festival include organic and farm-to-table food vendors, craft vendors featuring Kentucky Proud products, art installations and professionally-led children’s activities. Kentucky is known the world over for its special and diverse natural beauty. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to enjoy the scenery no matter what the season. A great way to see it all is to follow Kentucky’s designated Scenic Byways. Chosen for their appeal in portraying the geographic beauty, all also have historical and cultural significance. Some byways travel past limestone palisades, waterfalls, and
spring houses, skirting magnificent horse farms rimmed in fences of stone and plant. Some routes are lined with stately mansions, quaint homes and country churches, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Old Frankfort Pike, chosen one of the nation’s top ten byways, features savanna woodlands reminiscent of the Bluegrass landscape before colonial settlement. Located within a day’s drive of over half the U.S. population, Kentucky is a beautiful and historic destination. You are sure to find something to spark your interest. Bourbon, music, crafts, cultural heritage, horses and history are a
small sampling of what is available throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. All year long, Kentucky is alive with more than 700 festivals, several world-class sporting championships, major concerts and a whole lot more. Whether it’s a Bluegrass jam session or a symphony orchestra concert, an apple festival or an art opening, Kentucky can fill your calendar in a heartbeat. If you’re ready to relax and have some fun, you’re going to love it here! For Kentucky travel information, call the Kentucky Department of Travel 1-800-225-8747 or visit www.kytourism.com. ¤
