TRAVEL

Ways to Preserve Family Travel Memories Does your family travel throughout the year? Are you preserving your family travel memories? Let’s face it; kids don’t stay small and young forever. Before you know it, they’ll be teenagers thinking about which college or university to attend. Don’t allow your family travel memories to slip through your hands. Below are 5 ways you can capture your family travel memories which you can revisit anytime you want. Keep a journal. Not only is journaling relaxing, it’s a great way to capture your family travel memories. You don’t have to write pages and pages of your travels. Jot down the key points and funny moments of your family’s vacation. You could have

each family member write in the journal or provide them with their own journal so they can write down the travel experience. Bring a netbook, iPad, and or digital camera on your family vacation. Who doesn’t travel with some kind of electronic device? Most digital cameras are easy to pack and don’t take up that much space. You could bring your netbook or iPad with you on your family vacation to capture special ‘travel’ moments. If you do bring these items with you on your family vacation, make sure they’re insured. It’s better to be safe than sorry if they become lost or stolen. Pack a scrapbook, scissors, and glue on your family vacation.

Scrapbooking is a fun for the entire family. Purchase postcards, local guidebooks, or look for free travel information provided by hotels and resorts. Not only is scrapbooking a good way to capture your family vacation, it will keep your kids entertained and occupied. Moms and dads who decide to have a romantic night out will be relieved to know their children won’t be bored while staying in the hotel room. The babysitter will be relieved that the children have something to do as well. You can always purchase a scrapbook, glue, and scissors instead of packing them in your suitcase.

Purchase memorable souvenirs. Spend money on valuable souvenirs that you and your family will cherish. Souvenirs such as books, pens, clothing and accessories (T-shirts, scarves, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.) and postcards are great reminders of your fun family vacation. Give your kids money to buy their own souvenirs. Buy and hang a map in your child’s room or in the family/great room. Wouldn’t it be fun to ‘map out’ our

family vacation? Purchase a map of the world and stick pins to mark each family vacation. It’s fun to see how many miles you traveled as a family around the world or within the U.S. Also, maps are a great educational tool to teach kids about different parts of the world or U.S. These are some ways you can preserve your family vacation. Make sure you do all you can to seize the opportunity to document all your family vacations. Remember, time flies when you’re having fun! ¤

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina Coast Features 200 Miles of Sun and Surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping

that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more.

Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of

maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations

and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

This Winter Head South - cont' Florida’s great mix of rich culture and captivating history is sure to enlighten visitors of all ages. Take a moment and experience the intermingling of cultures that makes up Florida. From north to south and coast-to-coast, Florida is a rare melting pot of diversity and richness that welcomes an assortment of ethnicities and traditions. See for yourself what Florida’s multicultural scene has to offer. Tarpon Springs adds a Mediterranean flair to Florida’s never ending melting pot. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, this town is rich history and brings a wealth of culture

every year with the annual Epiphany festivals held at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Ethic diversity comes in the form of a weekend celebration in historic Eatonville, Florida. Home of the famous Harlem Renaissance author and folklorist, Zora Neale Hurston, this cultivated community honors her work with an annual festival displaying the past and present works of African-American artists, painters, writers and many more. The heart of Cuban culture is closer than you think, with evidence of its traditions present all over Florida. From the Monument to Father

Félix Varela in St. Augustine to the immense influence in the streets of Little Havana in Miami, this Latin culture has embraced Florida with its delicious foods, rhythmic sounds and fascinating traditions. Forming in the 1870s, the Bahama Village in Key West became known as home to the “Conchs,” as the Bahamian immigrants came ashore. Not much has changed today with Bahamian restaurants, roaming chickens, shops, a 1903-vintage church and a park that keeps the neighborhood lively. A multiplicity of cultures in Florida adds a zest of flair to its way of life.

Floridians share much more than the land of this peninsula, they share a wealth of culture that is hard to come by.
