The Heart of Northeast Tennessee Northeast Tennessee is a region characterized by small towns, rolling hills and rich history. Often referred to as Southern Appalachia, the entertaining attractions are literally limitless across the dynamic landscape. Festivals and numerous historic sites celebrate a strong folklore and frontier past. Voluminous mountains give way to spacious farmland that is solely interrupted by rural communities. The entire population is just shy of 800,000, but the locals compensate with character and kindness. The diversity of land and culture gives life to countless attractions. From the “big cities” to the small town staples, the various regions offers everything from luxuriant
shopping and five star dining to challenging hiking and dining under the stars. Nationally recognized as the Birthplace of Country Music and the Storytelling Capital of the World, home to NASCAR’s fastest half mile, Davy Crockett, Thomas Jefferson, the famous Cherokee Native American Tribe and Tennessee’s oldest and second oldest towns, significant history makes up a portion of local attractions. The local people love to remember their rich heritage and share it with the world. Lively festivals such as Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Blue Plum, The Iris Festival, Fun Fest, Heritage Days, The Storytelling Festival and many more are found within a Southern Appalachian year
and attract people from around the world. Museums can be found dotted throughout the rustic land. Any given day boaters, swimmers and fishermen can be found experiencing the diversity of the three distinctive lakes. Peaceful landscapes compliment arousing activities in America’s First Frontier. The simplistic way of life proves charming to many looking in. Kind hearted, delightful locals take pride in making visitors feel welcomed and the therapeutic natural beauty is unrivaled. These are all factors that help forge the heart of Northeast Tennessee. Find out more on pages 8 & 9 ¤

Visit Dolly Parton’s Hometown Sevierville, TN In the foothills of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville, Tennessee is a special place filled with breathtaking scenery, warm people and a unique cultural history. That’s why Sevierville and the Smoky Mountains have served as inspiration for some of Tennessee’s biggest musical hits – and the hometown of Tennessee’s biggest star, Dolly Parton. Dolly was born and raised in Sevierville and got her start in the music industry right downtown, singing live at The Pines Theater. With her songs, she has described the beauty and richness of Sevierville and the Smoky Mountains and inspired many people to visit her “Smoky Mountain Home.” These days, visitors to Sevierville usually make a stop at the bronze statue of a young Dolly perched atop a rock with guitar in hand for a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity before visiting her Dollywood theme park.
Even with her international appeal, Dolly Parton is only part of what draws people to visit Sevierville. Shopping in Sevierville is a must, especially because it is home to Tennessee’s largest authentic outlet mall, Tanger Outlets Sevierville. This 110 store complex features name-brand stores such as Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors and more all stocked with designer merchandise at deep discount prices. Of course, Sevierville also features a variety of art galleries, boutiques and antique stores where shoppers may find gifts and souvenirs that perfectly capture the feeling and scenery of their Smoky Mountain vacation. Family fun is all around Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains. Catch a game with the Tennessee Smokies, the AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, then take a walk on the wild side at animal attractions like Rainforest Adventures—one of America’s finest small zoos. See
airworthy war bird aircraft and national treasures like the Doolittle Medal of Honor at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation. Whether you’re taking in the scenery by trail or in your car, natural beauty is all around in Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains. Views stretch for miles across the rolling foothills into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most visited national park. While the park’s historic buildings may convey how early Appalachian settlers lived, their spirit is best conveyed by Sevierville’s residents. Warm smiles and genuine care for everyone are hallmarks of the area’s southern hospitality. Experience this first hand by staying in Sevierville where you’ll find a variety of accommodations ranging from indoor and outdoor water park resorts like Wilderness at the Smokies and luxury cabin resorts like Oak Haven Resort.

SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina's Coast features Sweeping Stretches of Sand and Surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years.
Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping
that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more.
Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of
maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

by the campfire or take a dip. When the stars come out, you will have the perfect view at your secluded campground. For a New Jersey Campground and RV Park Vacation Guide, email: NJCOA@CampNJ.com, call 1-800-222-6765 or visit www.GoCampingNJ.com. ¤

NORTH CAROLINA
Western Mountains to Waves of the East ~North Carolina Vacations The sun wakes in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the world-renowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the green mountain ranges of North Carolina.
Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the mountainous landscape, and one peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern United States. North Carolina’s Piedmont stretches from the western mountain regions to the eastern shore. Some areas gather more than 30 inches of
snow annually, making Piedmont a prime location for year-round recreation. Fishing, hiking, and picnicking maintain great popularity for summer adventurers, and skiing, snowboarding, and sledding is just around the corner with the winter snows! Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches and sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge is the highest dune along the eastern coast,
decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the ocean. Local wetlands also offer a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of coast overreaches every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands present the perfect locations for shelling and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme
parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available for the most lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built on the natural luxuries of eastern US. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolinian expanses, where perfection is year-round. ¤
