Five Ways to Preserve Family Travel Memories Does your family travel throughout the year? Are you preserving your family travel memories? Let’s face it; kids don’t stay small and young forever. Before you know it, they’ll be teenagers thinking about which college or university to attend. Don’t allow your family travel memories to slip through your hands. Below are 5 ways you can capture your family travel memories which you can revisit anytime you want. Keep a journal. Not only is journaling relaxing, it’s a great way to capture your family travel memories. You don’t have to write pages and pages of your travels. Jot down the key points and funny moments of your family’s vacation. You could have

each family member write in the journal or provide them with their own journal so they can write down the travel experience. Bring a netbook, iPad, and or digital camera on your family vacation. Who doesn’t travel with some kind of electronic device? Most digital cameras are easy to pack and don’t take up that much space. You could bring your netbook or iPad with you on your family vacation to capture special ‘travel’ moments. If you do bring these items with you on your family vacation, make sure they’re insured. It’s better to be safe than sorry if they become lost or stolen. Pack a scrapbook, scissors, and glue on your family vacation.

Scrapbooking is a fun for the entire family. Purchase postcards, local guidebooks, or look for free travel information provided by hotels and resorts. Not only is scrapbooking a good way to capture your family vacation, it will keep your kids entertained and occupied. Moms and dads who decide to have a romantic night out will be relieved to know their children won’t be bored while staying in the hotel room. The babysitter will be relieved that the children have something to do as well. Tip #1: You can always purchase a scrapbook, glue, and scissors instead of packing them in your suitcase.

Purchase memorable souvenirs. Spend money on valuable souvenirs that you and your family will cherish. Souvenirs such as books, pens, clothing and accessories (T-shirts, scarves, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.) and postcards are great reminders of your fun family vacation. Tip #2: Give your kids money to buy their own souvenirs. Buy and hang a map in your child’s room or in the family/great room. Wouldn’t it be fun to ‘map out’ our

family vacation? Purchase a map of the world and stick pins to mark each family vacation. It’s fun to see how many miles you traveled as a family around the world or within the U.S. Also, maps are a great educational tool to teach kids about different parts of the world or U.S. These are some ways you can preserve your family vacation. Make sure you do all you can to seize the opportunity to document all your family vacations. Remember, time flies when you’re having fun! ¤

Don’t Break These 7 Rules for Family Travel Traveling with the entire family can be an adventure in and of itself. Kids get tired and cranky as do moms and dads. Lighten up! Family travel is supposed to be enjoyable and fun. Follow the rules below to make your next family vacation the best one yet. 7 Rules for Family Travel Choose a family vacation that’s right for the whole family. Before scheduling your next family vacation, vote on it. Gather everyone’s input and weigh the pros and cons of each travel vacation idea. Select the right time for a family vacation. It’s important to schedule a family vacation that works for everyone. Gather the entire family together for a ‘vacation meeting’ and find out when everyone would like to go on vacation. Pack lightly. There’s no reason to bring your entire closet with you on vacation. Remember this travel rule,

“When in doubt, leave it out.” Have fun! If children start to fight, However, you may want to bring a whine, or complain, turn those digital camera to capture your family frowns upside down with a hug and vacation. Make memories! smile. ¤ Make frequent stops on your road trip. Whether you travel by RV, car, minivan, or SUV, stop at rest stops and parks. Smaller kids could become cranky from the long drives. The fresh air will tire them out which means they’ll sleep for most of the road trip. Make copies of important travel documents. Make copies of pertinent travel documents such as credit cards, passports, driver’s licenses, itinerary, and other documents. Give copies to a trusted family member or friend (at home) and keep a copy with you when you travel. Bring snacks. Keep children happy by packing their favorite snacks. Make sure you bring plenty with you.

Your Next Summer Vacation Land a world-record salmon, hike the beautiful 110-foot Salmon River Falls, and enjoy an applause-worthy sunset over Great Lake Ontario – all in one day! Oswego County, New York offers outstanding waterways and beautiful scenery for the outdoor lover. Try your luck for legendary salmon and trout or cast for bass and walleye where the Iroquois natives fished thousands of years ago. Explore more than 20 intriguing historic sites from America’s colorful history. Trace the steps of a Revolutionary War spy, gaze on the

ramparts of an 1812 battlefield and visit an Underground Railroad museum and the only American shelter for Holocaust survivors. Friendly villages bustle with festivals, unique restaurants, antiques, and eclectic shopping. A variety of affordable accommodations and plenty of spacious family campgrounds, offer a relaxing retreat. MARYLAND

of Babe Ruth, Tiny Tim and Debbie Reynolds. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea kayak and paddle through the marsh grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass (known as “rockfish” to the locals) in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or

prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. Take the Road Less Traveled. Poet Robert Frost took the less-worn path. You’ll be glad that you did, too, on any of Maryland’s 31 designated scenic byways. Forego the freeway and follow the colorful black-eyed Susan signs (the Susan is our state flower) through waterfront villages, past historic monuments, down old Main streets and beside pristine forest glades. These carefully mapped routes, some with “sidetracks” better explored without a car, encourage a leisurely pace as you journey around Maryland. Retreat to a bygone era on Maryland’s Civil War Trails. Brother fought brother in the cornfields around Sharpsburg, a battle that afterwards turned whole towns into

makeshift hospitals. Armies clad in blue and gray skirmished through Maryland’s countryside on their way to an epic battle at Gettysburg. A wounded assassin escaped Washington, D.C. into the Southern Maryland countryside in search of a doctor named Mudd. The Civil War soldiers, spies and villains didn’t have signposts to point the way, but today’s visitors can follow colorful bugle “trailblazer” signs of Maryland’s Civil War Trails. The bugles lead to waysides where interpretive markers tell both military and anecdotal accounts of war and its effects on the people of Maryland. No matter what the interest, you’re sure to find a wealth of information by logging on to www.visitmaryland.org. This article courtesy of Maryland Office of Tourism. 1-866-639-3526

Hop on a boat as we offer a wealth of fishing,

water sports and boating opportunities. Play a round of golf or even a little putt-putt. Explore the heritage of the Lower Shore by touring wonderful museums. Whatever your pleasure, for rest, relaxation and recreation, Ocean City, Maryland is the place to be! Some of the best things in life are free, and in Ocean City, you can find plenty of fun and free things to do. During the summer, our town presents free movies, concerts, bonfire story-telling, museum programs and beach games to

You’ve come to the right place! Maryland offers a wealth of possibilities, depending on your interests. Here are just a few… Maryland is a child-friendly state and the perfect place for a family vacation. A logical choice is a trip to Baltimore, where you can explore the acclaimed National Aquarium in Baltimore, visit the nation’s top-rated children’s zoo at The Baltimore Zoo or work at a pretend cannery at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. But there’s plenty for a family to do beyond the boundaries of Baltimore. Consider a hiking adventure in one of our state parks, enroll in a family sailing course on the Chesapeake Bay, or step back in time at any of our

historic attractions. (Yes, they’re educational – but they’re also fun!) Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in your mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains, or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. And if the mood should strike, you can even stick around and have your wedding here. Maryland is home to the historic old chapel that hosted the weddings

WEST VIRGINIA

Wild and Wonderful West Virginia has four distinct seasons. In the low-lying areas and valleys, including the western regions of the state and the Eastern Panhandle, winters are mild and summers are warm but pleasant. Hunting Island State Park, located near historic Beaufort, provides an excellent opportunity for shelling. Discover seashells, sand dollars and sea horses along four miles of beaches. Isle of Palms, located approximately 11 miles from historic downtown Charleston, will delight beachcombers with the abundance of sea stars and sand dollars found on the shore. Only a few minutes from Isle of Palms is Sullivans Island. Here will find sand dollars and sea stars, as well as angel wings, whelks, scallop shells, and ark shells. One of the best areas to locate fossils is at the north end of the beach in Edisto Beach State Park, a 1,255-acre park where camping is available. NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina – Where Perfection is Year-Round The sun wakes in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the world-renowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the

green mountain ranges of North Carolina. Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the mountainous landscape, and one peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern United States.

Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches and sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge is the highest dune along the eastern coast, decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the ocean. Local wetlands also offer a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of coast overreaches

every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands present the perfect locations for shelling and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available

for the most lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built on the natural luxuries of eastern US. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolinian expanses, where perfection is year-round.
