FLORIDA

Beaches, Boating and Balmy Bliss in Florida ~ "Sunshine State" Vacation If you are looking for a great place to spend your vacation Florida may be the perfect place. Known as the “Sunshine State” because of its balmy, sunny weather, Florida has more theme parks, entertainment centers and sport activities than any other part in the country. Its fantasy theme parks and attractions, exciting nightlife and leisurely days on the best beaches in the world make it an ideal place for vacations. Thousands of beautiful lakes and magnificent

rivers and its 1,350 miles of coastline make it ideal for boating, sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling and swimming. For a sportsperson, Florida is a vacation paradise. Its warm summers and mild winters make it possible to enjoy boating, camping, golfing, and water sports. The beaches are some of the finest in the world and have been rated among the top ten each year in Dr. Beach’s America’s Best Beach list each year. They are rated among the

best for beauty, facilities and ease of access. Families, couples or singles enjoy year round sunshine and soft white sand and clear water. The waters along its beaches are generally warm in comparison to the rest of the country. Beaches are a great way to get out in the sun, to play, to stroll and look for shells or to relax on a beach chair in the warm sunshine while reading a good book or just enjoying the companionship and the activity all around. With the many miles of coast line and the hundreds of natural lakes, Florida offers much for boaters. It is ideal for power-boating, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing and canoeing. Like fishing? You will find bass fishing, inshore saltwater and flats

fishing and offshore saltwater fishing if you want to catch the “big ones”. You may bring your own boat or charter one. Common and popular game fish include the sailfish and blue marlin. Florida is great for camping. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose a variety of setting, from beachfront campground, to RV parks, to primitive camping. The mild climate allows year round camping and outdoor activities. While camping, one can experience white sand beaches, peaceful forest and theme park thrills and at the end of the day, enjoy a breathtaking sunset. Florida has one of the best state park systems in the country with many great places to camp within a stone’s of the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.

Florida is the “golf capital of the world”. The year round sun attracts hundreds of thousands of golfers each year. There are over 1,000 public, private and semiprivate courses in which numerous cheap golf courses are also available. No matter what your golfing ability or budget, courses are accessible to suit all needs. To avoid large crowds and packed attraction, as well as expensive lodging, make plans to visit Florida during the off season which is during the months of May through October. This is also a popular time for families with school-age children. Traveling during the “off seasons” can be rewarding.

MARYLAND

Dive into this Bucket List of Things to Do in Maryland When we say Maryland’s got it all, we do mean all—the Maryland Office of Tourism Development list of top attractions includes diverse terrain and natural splendors; naval and space facilities; museums and historic sites; wild horses and gardens; theme parks and casinos; music and film; sports and resorts; eclectic shopping and cutting-edge dining. Pick one of these top things to see and do—or see how many you can do all in one trip. Now get out there and start doing! Ocean City Boardwalk: It’s not cliché, it’s fact: there’s something for everyone to do on vacation in Ocean City, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other. Thrilling amusement rides, peaceful sunsets over the Bay, fresh steamed crabs, fireworks, surfing, fishing... no matter what you’re looking for in a vacation, whether it’s adventure or relaxation, you’re bound to find it by heading straight for the boardwalk in OC. Assateague Island: Just a short hop from Ocean City but seemingly a world away lie the beautiful beaches and lovely nature walks of Assateague, where the wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore roam. They’re all over the place—literally just wandering

around—but don’t take our word for it: you have to see it to believe it. Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum: This museum in charming St. Michaels has a huge collection of work and pleasure boats in and out of the water. Visit the working shipyard, spend the night at the historic 1879 lighthouse, and learn all about the lives and trade of Chesapeake Bay watermen through the museum’s unique collection of indigenous watercraft. Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center: Harriet Tubman became famous as a “conductor” of the Underground Railroad as she led other enslaved people to freedom at least 13 separate times over a ten-year period, garnering her the title “Moses of her people.” This Cambridge museum showcases the remarkable life of Tubman, who grew up near here before escaping slavery. Smith Island: Smith Islanders are known for their distinctive Elizabethan accents and their delicious many-layered Smith Island cake, Maryland’s official desert (try one at the Smith Island Baking Co.). Settled in the 17th century by the British, Smith Island is only accessible by boat; luckily, it’s easy to go on an excursion there, with ferries that run daily from the eastern and western

shores of the Chesapeake. Cake, anyone? Ft. McHenry: Fort McHenry is a great place to relax and watch the boats on a sunny day, but it also holds a special place in American history. Here you can stand on the spot where, during the War of 1812, the defenders of Baltimore turned back the invading British, fresh from the burning of Washington, D.C. It’s also where the original “Star-Spangled Banner” flag flew in victory, as seen by Francis Scott Key, the lawyer and amateur poet who went on to pen the poem that became the lyrics to our National Anthem. U.S. Naval Academy: One of the country’s elite military institutions, visit the Naval Academy to see the final resting place of John Paul Jones, father of the U.S. Navy. Inner Harbor: The Inner Harbor is the world-class centerpiece of the city of Baltimore, with visiting tall ships, museums, restaurants and shops all within walking distance of each other. Close to The Baltimore Convention Center and downtown hotels, with a water taxi to take you to other waterfront neighborhoods and attractions, you could spend a week here and never make it to shore. Antietam National Battlefield: Tread on hallowed ground at

Antietam, the site of the bloodiest single day of battle in the Civil War, when Union troops turned back Confederate invaders, and over 23,000 soldiers lost their lives or were wounded or went missing. They were the armies of the Potomac and Northern Virginia, so in some cases, brothers were literally fighting against brothers. Visit to witness its importance in American history: the battle here led to Abraham Lincoln’s preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Deep Creek Lake: Deep Creek is the largest lake in the state at 3,900 acres, and there are at least 3,900 things to do there. Relax and enjoy the outdoors, go boating, or cast your line and do some freshwater fishing for bass and pike. Allegany Museum: This museum in history-rich Cumberland pays tribute to the region’s role in a developing America, from serving as a western outpost for George Washington to a manufacturing and transportation center in the 20th century. While you’re in the area, take a ride on the nearby Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, and tour

the vibrant arts community of Cumberland itself. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park: The C&O Canal was once the commercial artery that brought goods to market from Maryland and West Virginia to Washington. Made obsolete by the railroad before it was even completed, the federal government bought the land in 1938 and ultimately turned it into a park, which today runs from The Watergate Hotel through Harper’s Ferry and beyond, giving you 184 miles of parkland to explore. National Harbor: Gorgeous National Harbor is a 300-acre waterfront development filled with shops, restaurants, and the 175-foot Capital Wheel, all on the banks of the Potomac in Prince George’s County. A water taxi connects it to Alexandria, Virginia and the Washington Metro system, giving easy access to the free museums and monuments of our nation’s capital. Mountaineers live life with gusto. This area offers magnificent places to play, learn and live well. From dramatic gorges to ancient Cathedral Forest, the scenery is worthy of wonder. History lives here, too. A frontier-era fort, Civil War cemeteries, museums and a New Deal-era homestead. In Mountaineer Country, history co-exists with energetic university communities, high-tech enterprises and a dynamic cultural scene.

Beautiful byways and backways wind through the region, including Mountain Parkway Byway and Cedar Creek Road Backway. Northern Panhandle Region: Historically and geographically, the Northern Panhandle has been an important point of confluence, almost a magical place. It was home to the Adena people, the last battle of the American Revolution, the coming of the National Road, the first bridge across the Ohio River, and an industrial boom that spawned vast fortunes and Victorian mansions. In 1863, the state of West Virginia was

to Create a Wild and Wonderful Getaway Eastern Panhandle Region: Beginning in 1748, when he was a teenaged surveyor, George Washington spent a lot of time in what is now West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. He bought his first piece of property in 1750 and by 1777, he owned more land and began spending summers in the area. Follow the Washington Heritage Trail through the area. More than a historical path, it’s a journey through some of the most beautifulcountryside in America – endearing small towns, fertile farmland, fern-filled forests and panoramic river overlooks. Relax with a spa treatment, shop at an antique store or explore a fine art gallery. Potomac Highlands Region: Check out a state map, and you’ll notice a

large green swath along the eastern central portion of West Virginia. That’s the Monongahela National Forest – almost a million acres – and much of it is in the Potomac Highlands region. The Allegheny Mountains ripple through this area, making for awesome outdoor adventures and splendid driving tours. These green mountains also shelter a valuable diversity of plants and animals, some of them rare. Against this backdrop, the Potomac Highlands is full-to-bursting with mountain music, fine arts and handcrafts, historical treasures, gracious lodgings and good things to eat. SOUTH CAROLINA

Sweeping Stretches of Sand and Surf along South Carolina's Coast A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round

and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella.

In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south.

Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of maritime forest and marsh for

exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport
