The 2020 Azalea and Spring Flower Trail will be held March 20th-April 5th, 2020.

This annual spring event has been described as a floral wonderland and a photographer’s paradise.

Enjoy springtime in Tyler... stroll the beautiful gardens, join one of the many community events, and visit the city’s offering of fine and performing arts.

The Azalea & Spring Flower Trail travels through ten miles of residential gardens and historic home sites. The two trails have been routed to maintain an orderly traffic flow so visitors can see as many flowers as possible. Follow the specifically marked Azalea Trail signs southward to enjoy this outstanding celebration of Spring in East Texas.

This is a celebration of all things railroading! There will be lots to see and do for the entire family. Many clubs will be displaying their inspiring layouts. Join the vendors selling memorabilia and check out all sorts of modeling supplies for your home layout. The 2020 Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival Returns to Downtown Tyler

True Vine On The Square is now open for business bringing their “love of craft beer and community to the downtown area.” Downtown, they are not stopping with just beer - in addition to having all of your favorite beers on tap, True Vine On The Square will also carry an extensive selection of red and white wines.

May 2nd, the 7th annual Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival presented by Hyundai of Longview will be held in Downtown Tyler, and with it comes the best of barbecue in Texas and top of the line music all day.

The Red Dirt Rock on at True Vine’s BBQ & Music Festival has proven to be one 6th Year Celebration! of the most premier and Raise your glass - Tyler’s first craft brewery is unique music and food expeturning 6! “It’s almost unbelievable that our little riences in Texas. The festival takes place on the brewery has been rocking on for six years. We are brick streets of the Downtown Square in Tyler honored by all the support we’ve had from you every May, with the 2020 edition featuring at least 30 of the most celebrated barbecue restaurants in Texas. Music happens for nearly 12 hours on two stages, with the main stage highlighting the biggest names in Texas and Red Dirt Music.

This year’s festival will also feature the state’s most celebrated barbecue restaurants providing samples of their smoked meats to attendees. Barbecue joints from as close as Tyler and as far as Amarillo converge on the Rose City to showcase their smoked meats to thousands of barbecue enthusiasts, while thousands more pour onto the brick streets for the concert.

Performances this year feature Parker McCollum (10pm), Josh Abbott Band (8:15pm), Jason Boland & The Stragglers (6:45pm), Charley Crockett (5:15pm), and Chris Colston (3:45pm).

“Top to bottom, I don’t think there’s ever been a Red Dirt lineup we’ve been more excited about. Having these names join our incredible barbecue joints was a huge honor for our festival,” Red Dirt promoter Chase Colston said.

“We’re can’t wait to get back on the brick streets for another great Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival.”

Once your card runs out of samples, you can continue purchasing half-pours or full pours.

And of course, there will be lots of singing and dancing. All the way from San Antonio, Texas, Howl At The Moon dueling piano bar band will be taking the stage for a night of music requests and all your favorite songs. If you’ve never experienced a dueling piano show, just know you are in for an over-the-top night of fun.

Also, 90’s Grunge tribute band Nevermind will open the night starting at 5pm.

Come ready to eat! Sola Bread Co. will be offering its full menu of pizza and appetizers as well as their legendary Brazilian steak and bread plates. Plus, the Sola Cafe will also be serving up original recipe sandwiches made on their delicious house-made bread.

True Vine’s friends from The Porch at ETX Brewing Food Truck will be on-site as well.

Hit the Bricks March 14th:

St. Patrick’s Day Bikes and Parade

On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over converge on Downtown Tyler for Hit the Bricks.

Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and of course, the chance to check out a great locally-owned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment.

This month will feature a Tyler annual favorite: Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour. This year, the tour will begin Downtown at ETX Brewing Co. Register before March 4th for a t-shirt.

There will be fun activities on the Square including music by DJ Bring That Beat Back, a Kid’s Corner with activities, Irish-themed food and green beer, local retail and artist vendors, and more! “Gone with the Wind” (1939) Liberty Hall is the best place to experience the classics, and it doesn’t get more classic than the Southern Civil War epic, “Gone with the Wind.” In 1940, Liberty Hall was the only theatre in Tyler to premiere the film, and 80 years later, it is being brought back to East Texas audiences, most of whom have never seen it on the big screen.

In honor of true Southern hospitality, sweet tea and lemonade will be served, which is included with the ticket price.

Liberty Hall will also host special guests the Azalea Belles, to celebrate the start of the Azalea Trail season. These lovely Southern ladies will be in full costume, swishing up and down the aisles to usher patrons to their seats. Come

Weekly Storytimes

Families with infants, toddlers and preschoolers are invited to the Library weekday mornings for age-appropriate storytimes that include reading, singing and playtime. For sessions starting before the Library opens, please enter through the auditorium’s external door. See below for more program information.

• Mondays at 10:30am: Leeme un Cuento (ages three to six, but all ages are welcome) • Wednesdays at 10am and 10:45am: Toddler Time (18-36 months) • Wednesdays at 9:15am: Infant Lap and Play Time (ages 0 to 18 months) • Thursdays at 10:30am: Read Aloud Crowd (preschoolers ages three to six, but all ages are welcome) • Thursday, March 5th (10:30am): A Special Dr. Seuss Story Time will be presented, geared for ages 2 to 6 years, but all ages are welcome.

Storytime will feature reading, singing, and a Dr. Seuss-themed activity.

• Thursdays, March 5th and 19th (11:30am): Sensory-Friendly Story Time - Presented in partnership with BlueSprig Pediatrics, this is a storytime for children of all ages on the autism spectrum, with attention deficits or other differing abilities. Story time will feature reading and sensory-friendly activities.

Please note, there will be no sessions of Infant Story Time or Toddler Time on Wednesday, March 4th. Additionally, there will be no storytimes for any storytime sessions during the week of March 9th-13th. Talking Tales will not meet in March.

Book Sale

The Spring Book Sale will open Wednesday, March 11th and run through Sunday, March 15th in the Library lobby. The sale begins daily when the Library opens and will end 30 minutes before closing time. Most items are priced at $1 or less. On Sunday, they will have their Bag & Box Sale. Paper grocery bags can be filled for $4 a bag and cardboard boxes can be filled for $7 per box. There will be a large selection of children’s materials at this sale, which will be featured closest to the front doors. Items for sale include donations that do not meet the Library’s current needs as well as gently-used resources that have been withdrawn from circulation. Stock will be replenished each day of the sale, so new items may be found daily.

Tai Chi

The Library is excited to offer a new weekly health and wellness class. Tai Chi begins March 5th and will be held every Thursday at 5:30pm in the 3rd-floor Makerspace. This program is free and open to anyone interested. Occasionally, some classes will be held on the large patio outside the Library, weather permitting. Come ready to move, breathe, and find your inner balance. Tai Chi is a form of martial arts that is especially good for health and meditation. To get started, all you need to do is sign a health waiver.

Family Game Day

Thursday, March 12th at 2pm in the auditorium, families, and children are invited to a special game day featuring Nintendo SwitchTM games and board games.

Kid Buzz

Thursday, March 5th at 4pm, kids in grades Kindergarten to 4th grade can make their voices count by entering the “Every Body Counts” art contest sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

This contest will help educate and raise awareness about the upcoming United States Census.

All students who enter the contest will receive a book that has been gifted and funded by the Friends of the Tyler Public Library. Kid Buzz attendees will be able to create a work of art to enter into the contest. All participants are eligible to win prizes.

Tweens “Every Body Counts” Art Contest

Families will have the opportunity to spend time together, make new friends, and talk one-on-one with a different community resource professional each week.

Makerspace: Popsicle Stick Car Derby

The cars have been built and the derby is ready to go! Kids who built a car in the February Makerspaces are invited on March 14th at 2pm to race! Registration for Makerspace activities is required and limited to 15 participants per class. In order to join the Derby, racers must have participated in a previous car building session and be registered for the Derby.

Nutrition Classes for Seniors

Seniors are invited to a nutrition class on March 19th at 2pm in the auditorium. This class will cover the following: benefits of good nutrition, the basics of eating for health and fitness, practical tips for making small changes that have an impact over time, resources for learning more, and focuses on nutrients that are important to older adults.

At Tyler State Park, you can boat, fish, swim in the lake, hike, mountain bike, picnic, geocache, camp, birdwatch, and study nature.

Tyler State Park is a place year-round to explore nature and experience the beauty of east Texas.

Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour

This year’s event will be hosted in Downtown Tyler at the ETX Brewing Co.! TBC’s event is back in the heart of Tyler and will continue to grow into the ride it was many moons ago. The tour name, Beauty and the Beast, depicts a beautiful bike ride in the rolling hills of East Texas, with the “Beast” being a hill on Old Omen Road as you leave Lake Tyler. Participants earn a medal if they can “slay the Beast” and pedal to the top of the hill. Staging will be behind the brewery on S. College. The Bicycle Tour features three routes of 26, 43 and 62 miles that will all begin at College Avenue and Erwin Street. The cyclists will make their way east of town and head toward Overton. True Vine’s Beer Run

It’s that time again...time for the annual True Vine Beer Run - and this year, it is promised to be the biggest Beer Run ever! This year the Beer Run course will take you across Tyler as runners will start at True Vine On The Square in Downtown Tyler and make their way to the True Vine Earl Campbell location!

The course this year will take you through the beautiful Azalea District, up the wooded road of Old Noonday Road, and finally to the front entrance of True Vine on Earl Campbell (about 3 miles in total).

Along the way, runners will be greeted by “course stations” set up on the route by our friends from around Tyler. Course stations will be handing out things like water, beer, swag, donuts, playing hype music (there may be a drum line showing up) and other general overthe-top motivation to keep you going. This

year’s Beer Run will benefit and highlight the meaningful work that the East Texas Food Bank is doing for Tyler and the surrounding communities. To register go to eventbrite.com. The Tyler Run for Autism began in 2012 with the purpose of raising funds to provide much needed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children on the autism spectrum in East Texas. The Diva Du 2020

The Diva Du 2020 will be held at Kiepersol’s Winery and Distillery, 4120 FM 344 E, Tyler.

The Diva Du is East Texas’ first and only exclusively women’s event. Sprint and Olympic distances are offered, in addition to relay teams and a 5K for those who want to join the fun without a bike involved. This is a beginner’s distance run.

Divas have continued to rock it out and earn the bragging rights that come from climbing East Texas hills. The Sprint duathlon will consist of a 1.5-mile run, 10-mile bike, and 1.5-mile run.

“I Am Patrick” Exclusive Movie Premiere

“I Am Patrick” is a feature-length docudrama that peels back centuries of legend and myth to tell the true story of Saint Patrick.

Through historical re-enactments, expert interviews, and Patrick’s own writings, experience

the journey from man to saint.

In the 5th century, the Roman empire was collapsing, and barbarians threatened civilization. In Britain, a teenager named Patrick was living a comfortable life as the son of a government official. Despite being part of the Roman Catholic Church, his faith didn’t mean anything to him until he was kidnapped by pirates at the age of 16 and enslaved at the edge of the known world - Ireland. For 6 years, Patrick was forced to work as a shepherd and was driven to the brink of starvation. It was there that he turned to his Christian faith and through divine intervention managed to escape. He was reunited with his family in Britain only to have a prophetic dream calling him to take Christianity back to the land of his captivity. Against the wishes of his family and the Church, Patrick returned as a missionary bishop to Ireland and converted thousands to Christianity. He opposed slavers, Irish kings, and possibly druids but nothing compared to the hostility he faced from his fellow Christians.

After a close friend exposed a dark secret of Patrick’s, it is believed he was ordered to leave his mission and return to Britain. Patrick had to choose - obey God or obey man?

MUSIC Living Their Best Life:

2nd Childhood

By Johnny Griffith Childhood is typically a time associated with fun and laughter, and usually great memories when we think back on it. As we grow older, we don’t necessarily have bad times, in fact we still make great memories, but we typically look back on those times in childhood as some of our best memories and wish we could relive those days.

Well, there is a duo from East Texas who are doing their best to make this time of their life just as fun as those childhood days. So much so that they’re even calling the band 2nd Childhood.

A pairing up of Tim Letsch on drums and Scott Garrison (Scotty G) on keys, 2nd Childhood serves as a creative conduit for these two friends who were both originally from the Metroplex, but got to East Texas as fast as they could and are finding themselves on more and more stages in the area.

I was able to catch up to them this month to get a little more info on 2nd Childhood.

Johnny: So what do you guys do when you’re not on stage?

Scotty G: Tim is the lead pastor of his own church, Crossroads Community Church of Lindale.

I was a worship leader for over 23 years and just recently retired from that profession.

Johnny: How did you two first meet?

Scotty G: Tim preached (as a guest speaker) one night for the youth group that I was leading worship for at Christ Central Church in Lindale, Texas. I later found out he was an incredible drummer and had him sit in with me a few times when he was available. It was as if we could read each other’s minds musically!

Johnny: How did you each get started in music, and give us a quick summary of your musical experience before 2nd Childhood.

Scotty G: The day I was being born, February 29, 1960, my dad bought a little Les Paul Jr. guitar that looked exactly like a mini version of his Fender Melody Maker guitar. When I was four years old, he sat down and taught me the 4-5 chords that he knew. I fell in love with it! By the time I was 6 years old, I was showing my dad complex riffs that I had been teaching myself.

Guitar became a huge part of me. While other kids in my neighborhood were sniffing glue and smoking pot, I was writing puppy-love songs to the girls at my elementary and Jr. high schools. I began playing organ at the age of 9, drums by 12, and was producing my own multitracks by using two cassette tape recorders side by side. I would record the drum track on one machine, then play along with that recording while adding guitar onto the other cassette recorder and repeated this process till all the instruments and vocals were laid down. The quality of the finished product was just awful, but the songs were well received. I started playing piano and singing at Tony Romas House of Ribs in Dallas, Texas in 1979. Every check I got I would spend on a new piece of musical gear. I started out using their piano and after a couple of years I had acquired two more keyboards (playing bass on one of them with my left hand), a four track tape recorder, (for when I wanted to play guitar), and a huge sound system that would easily put me in the hospital today if I tried to move

it. However, by 1985, I would be moving that stuff around to NINE gigs every week!

I played gigs at six different locations and played seven nights a week and two afternoons.

Tim: Well, I started singing when I was five, and in spite of several attempts by many people to get me to shut up, I am still singing (totally kidding!). I, in all seriousness, started in church at age five singing. I tried instruments when I was younger, but was always too hyper to focus. I concentrated on singing through my high school years. I even quit the football team to join choir. The coach wasn’t too happy with me. I went to a school called Southwestern Assemblies of God University (AKA SAGU) and majored in Vocal Performance. I travelled the country with a college group called the Harvesters. While I was at SAGU, I got inspired to learn the piano. It was a total God thing. I had wasted so many opportunities to learn, and I asked God if He would allow me to have one more shot. To this day, I know He birthed the desire in my heart and gave me focus to learn. So at age 17, I locked myself in a practice room and didn’t come out until I knew I could play a couple of tunes. That led to me leading worship in the dorms for a while. I took a youth pastor job in the summer of my 17th year, and eventually took a Music Director spot at a church when I turned 20. There was one Sunday when a drummer didn’t show up to play (I was about 21 years old), and the team needed a drummer, so I practiced for a while and filled in the best that I could.

I got a taste for drumming and never put it down.

I picked up a little guitar and bass, and started a contemporary Christian band called Fadestrange.

We put out two projects, and then broke up, mainly due to people moving away. You can still find our project “Back There Again” on Spotify and iTunes. My first “professional” gig was with an oldies band called Bongo & The Point. Right around the time I left that band, I met Scotty helping him out with worship, and it was an incredible time filled with musical chemistry.

Like he said, “It was like we could read each other’s minds.” We’ve been playing music with one another in some capacity ever since. We both took a dueling piano job, and wound up gigless. I play drums and sing now for a living. If you would have told me that even 10 years ago, I would have laughed in your face in disbelief.

Johnny: When did the idea of you two starting a two-man wonderband first come up?

Tim: I think Scotty had an offer in Lindale to play a solo gig. He asked me to join him and it went so well, we decided to pursue it further.

Johnny: What was behind the decision to just go with a two musician lineup?

Tim: I don’t think we ever set out to keep it a two man lineup, it just sort of happened that way.

We haven’t really needed a third due to Scotty’s mad bass skills on his left hand. When the situation calls for it, we have brought in a bass player,

but we just haven’t needed the third that often. It has been to our advantage, though. You can play for a lot less money, and fit into a lot tighter spaces than a four or five piece band can.

Johnny: And the name?

Whose idea was that?

Scotty G: That was my idea. We’re both born again Christians with a second chance at life, but we’re also reliving our childhood by playing great old songs that we grew up with. Most of those songs bring back fond memories for people our age and a little older. I had actually formed a three piece band years earlier with the name 2nd Childhood, but when I was offered a good paying, full time position as a pianist at a dueling piano bar, I couldn’t say no. The band went one way and I went the other. Soon after that, I would realize that I had made a very poor decision and wound up with no job after a few months. But the other guys graciously brought me back into the band, now named The Tuxedo Cats which Tim and I are both proudly a part of to this day.

Johnny: You guys have a pretty eclectic mix of sounds in your extensive catalog, but if you had to categorize yourselves, where would you say your wheelhouse is, sound-wise?

Scotty G: I would call us a Baby Boomer Dance Band. We don’t really appeal to college age kids much. They don’t seem to relate to awesome lyrics, great chord changes, and stuff you can easily sing along to. But I guess every generation of musicians before me probably said the same thing...“These kids today!”

Tim: We have just grown up with these tunes that we are playing. They are a part of us. It’s hard to pour yourself into a song when you don’t identify with it. I think that goes both ways…for the artists playing and the audience listening. If it doesn’t speak your musical language, you aren’t going to be able to understand it. That being said, there are songs that we do play that college age kids love. Artists like Mumford & Sons, Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, Niall Horan, George Ezra…but they are songs that we as performers can identify with and put ourselves into. We have nothing against the other artists, we just have preferences like everyone else does.

Johnny: Are you ever trying to mix in any originals?

Scotty G: I do some of my old country original stuff from time to time, but most of my original songs are contemporary Christian. I was a worship leader for so many years, I can really only write about my first love, Christ.

Tim: I empathize with Scotty. The only thing that ever comes out of me when I write original tunes is Christian music. I have even tried to write love songs for my wife and I can’t. The songs just end up being a love song to Jesus.

Johnny: About how many shows does the band try to play a month?

Scotty G: We are the house duo every Wednesday night at Texas Music City Grill

(formally Coyote Sam’s) in Tyler and every Thursday night at Texas Music City Grill in Lindale. We also work with the Tuxedo Cats every Friday and Saturday night. On top of that, I play several solo gigs at retirement homes all over Tyler. So for 2nd Childhood, it’s a steady eight gigs per month, but I’m doing about 25-30 gigs every month.

Johnny: Any challenges specific to having just two members on stage?

Scotty G: We haven’t come across one yet!

Tim: I mean obviously it’s difficult when someone asks for Bohemian Rhapsody with just two guys. We just can’t, and won’t, even try. We love the tune, but it just isn’t meant for a two piece band. Other than that, we haven’t found many musical mountains that we aren’t willing to climb as a two member band.

Johnny: Are most of the gigs in the East Texas area or do you travel out of the area at all?

Scotty G: Most of our gigs are right here in Tyler and Lindale, but if the money’s right...have keyboard and drums...will travel!

Johnny: What are you most proud of, as a band, at this point into it?

Scotty G: Our friendship is first and foremost.

Tim: I wholeheartedly agree!

Scotty G: I know if I lost both my arms and couldn’t play music anymore, Tim would duct tape a kazoo to my face and figure out a way we could still work together. Tim is a great musician, and an even better friend.

Tim: We both want our friendship to show the faithfulness of the wonderful God we serve; I am most proud of that. Yes, I got my big break from my buddies in Bongo and the Point, but it was Scotty that introduced me to the boys in the Tuxedo Cats. If it wasn’t for Scotty, I don’t think I would be playing professionally. Scotty is my best friend on and off the stage. We believe in and trust one another. That is something that I am also extremely proud of.

Johnny: What has been your favorite moment, on stage or off, as a duo so far?

Scotty G: 7pm every Wednesday and Thursday night! That’s the time we take the stage and look out at the same die hard fans who never disappoint, plus a few new faces every week.

Johnny: What is in the works for 2020?

Scotty G: Tim tells me he wants to start writing again, so we may have a little something put together this year. Finding the time between gigs is my biggest challenge but you’ll never hear me complain about that.

Tim: Yeah, I am getting the itch to write and record again. We definitely plan on developing the awesome relationship that we have with Tyler and surrounding areas. We love this area! We love the people! We are so excited for what the future holds, and you never know, an original project may be on the way, but until then we would love to entertain you every Wednesday at Texas Music City Grill in Tyler’ and Thursday at Texas Music City in Lindale, formerly known as Love & War at 7pm.

Johnny: What experience do you hope first timers will have at one of your shows?

Tim: We want everyone who comes to have a blast. We love to see smiles and laughter. We want first timers to experience good music and a friendly couple of guys that they can relate to.

There are so many incredibly talented bands out there, we are just one of the many. We know people have a choice when it comes to entertainment.

We want first timers to experience the appreciation we have for every person that comes to hear us, and to leave a little, or a lot happier than when they came.

Modern-folk duo Friction Farm, will be in concert at Old Firehouse in Edom.

This husband and wife team of traveling troubadours. Aidan Quinn and Christine Stay, combine storytelling, social commentary and humor to create songs of everyday life, local heroes, and quirky observations.

Also this month, from Texas’ upper east side, award-winning singer-songwriters Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne will be in concert.

They connect with audiences coast to coast.

Their music is a signature blend of original folk, jazz, and blues with deep Texas roots. With more than 12 recordings and decades of touring between them, their repertoire is playful, poignant and poetic including sparky love ballads, historically based tributes, children’s music, quirky story songs, modern-day spirituals, and anthems of justice and peace.

Raised by musical families and nurtured by choirs through college, the two met in Nashville, and now pay it forward together in performances from listening-room venues, festivals, and community events to churches, libraries, and schools.

Lynn co-wrote the theme song for the hit PBS children’s TV series “Wishbone.” Her diverse writing background brings added experience to the duo’s workshops and presentations.

Lindy sang in the famed Texas Boys Choir as a child, and for several years he and his band were Roy Clark’s backup group performing with

Roy from Las Vegas to “Hee Haw” to Carnegie Hall.

About Old Firehouse

The Old Firehouse in Edom is the only “listening room” in the area where audiences can enjoy a “coffee house” atmosphere of the ‘70s, with national and international singer/songwriters performing their own music up close and personal.

Concerts feature folk genres typically described as Americana, Orchestral Folk, Traditional, and Mountain. Every performance consists of strictly original songs that are both composed and performed by the musician who has created them. The Van Zandt Arts & Cultural District Foundation presents the second annual Tribute to Townes Van Zandt from 6-8pm, Saturday, March 7th, at The Forge Bar & Grill in historic downtown Ben Wheeler.

The late Townes Van Zandt is often referred to as the most influential Texas songwriter of the 20th century. Musician Steve Earle says he was “the best songwriter in the world.”

Performers imbedded in Townes Van Zandt’s music will honor the legend in song swap style during the tribute event. They include Matt Harlan, Chris Edwards, Shane Rendon, Grady Lee, Nick Brumley, and Cole Allen.

Other musicians are invited to bring instruments and continue the tribute in an open jam session after the show.

Last year, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Van Zandt’s birthday on March 7th, his family’s record company, TVZ Records, along with Fat Possum Records, released a new album, “Sky Blue,” a collection of unreleased songs created 47 years ago. Newly released this year are other records including a double LP compilation, “The Best of Townes Van Zandt;” reworked artwork and lyric sheet and remastered 180-gram vinyl, “Townes Van Zandt: 50th Anniversary Edition;” and “Our Mother The Mountain: 50th Anniversary Edition.” A limited supply of vinyls and CDs are available at the tribute with proceeds benefiting the arts foundation. The Van Zandt family - former wife and literary executor Jeanene, and children J.T., Will, and Katie Bell - continue to illuminate his songwriting process and evolution.

Townes Van Zandt died January 1, 1997, at the age of 52 from cardiac arrhythmia while recovering from hip surgery. He is buried in the

Van Zandt family plot in Dido Cemetery near Fort Worth.

He came from a long line of Texas nobility. His three times great grandfather, Isaac Van Zandt, was a prominent leader of the Republic of Texas and the namesake of Van Zandt County in the Upper East Side of Texas. His great-great uncle Khleber Miller Van Zandt was one of the founders of Fort Worth.

Although he was born into an affluent family, he endured poverty and often sang of folks living on the edge.

He was a poet and songwriter beloved by his many fans and peers. Don Williams and Emmylou Harris had hits with his song “If I Needed You.” Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard reached No. 1 with their version of his song “Pancho and Lefty.”

His influence on Americana music is immense and continues today.

Artists who cite Van Zandt as a source of inspiration include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, Norah Jones, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and Garth Brooks to name a few.

Jamey Johnson, born in Enterprise, Alabama, is an American country music singersongwriter.

Signed to BNA Records in 2005, Johnson made his debut with his single “The Dollar,” which reached a peak of #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

An album, also titled “The Dollar,” was released in 2006. Johnson exited BNA in 2006 and signed to Mercury Nashville Records in March 2008, releasing his first single for the label that month. In addition to his own material, Johnson has co-written three singles for Trace Adkins, as well as one each for George Strait, Joe Nichols, and John Michael Montgomery. Blacktop Mojo is a hard-driving Southern rock unit based out of Palestine, Texas. Blacktop Mojo’s fiery blend of post-grunge, classic rock, and metal falls somewhere between Soundgarden, Black Stone Cherry, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Founded in 2012 by frontman Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, the band eventually morphed into a five-piece with the additions of bass player Matt Curtis and guitarists Ryan Kiefer and Kenneth Irwin. At TJC Earth and Space Science Center this Month:

Fit for Life Coloring Contest Offers Cash Prizes

All aspiring artists in grades K-12 are invited to submit their original works of art in the 2020 “Fit for Life” Youth Art Contest, sponsored by the Cooperative Teachers Credit Union.

Students are encouraged to submit original artwork pieces using the theme of “Fit for Life.”

The contest is open to any K-12 student that attends public, private, charter, or home school in East Texas.​There is no recommended medium upon which the artwork must be presented.

Entries must be an actual tangible product that can be held and viewed by our judges. There are no minimum or maximum size dimensions.

Contestants will be divided into 4 age categories based on creativity in the expression of the theme: Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade through 5th Grade, 6th Grade through 8th Grade, and 9th Grade through 12th Grade.​​ Artwork that cannot be sent by postal mail can be delivered to the physical office, but you must send an email first so that you can be informed where to deliver the artwork. Delivering a student’s entry does not increase your odds of becoming a winner. ​Cash prizes will be awarded at the Fit City Tyler Celebration Event May 14th, held on the lawn of the Tyler Rose Garden, when the winners of their annual community health programs will be introduced. Attendance is free and open to all ages.

At Discovery Science Place This Month:

Learn At The DSP Spring Break Camps Loads of fun at the Discovery Science Place, located at 308 N. Broadway Ave., Downtown Tyler. For more info go to discoveryscienceplace.org.

March 9th-13th (10am-4pm): Spring Break Camps

Register for a single day or all five! Camp fees include snacks and all camp materials. Students must bring sack lunch. Camps are divided into two age bands: K-2nd and 3rd-5th. The cost of camps is $35 per student per camp. Camps are: Monday: Take Flight - Campers will spend the day learning what makes things lift off and take to the sky. Rockets and paper helicopters will be constructed, as well as parachutes which allow creations to come back safely to the ground.

Tuesday: Race for Space - Visitors to this day of camp will get to spend some time in the new Discovery Dome portable planetarium. Space explorer campers will also construct habitats and explore new worlds on their journey across space.

Wednesday: Creative Construction - Guest engineers will spend the day learning what it takes to make things strong and sturdy for humans to work with and live in. Machines, buildings, and more will be created and crafted. Ziplines and giant wall marble runs may be crafted during the course of the day.

Thursday: Kitchen Chemistry - A favorite for every week of camp, campers will get to make all the gooey, messy, slimy things that you are dreading making at home! Oobleck, slime, and instant snow will all be explored during this camp.

Friday: Kingdoms of Life - A new camp for the DSP, Kingdoms will allow exploration of the wonderful world of life around us. Animal studies and more will happen this day, as campers explore the different areas of the world and its wonderful fauna.

March 28th (10am-2pm):

Science Cart-A-Palooza

Join us for Science Cart-A-Palooza- a day of hands-on science at the DSP. Members of the UT Tyler WIMS (Women in Math and Science) organization will be on the museum floor with hands-on science activity and demonstration carts. Fire off an Alka-Seltzer rocket, create a cloud in a bottle, see the hair-raising effects of static electricity, and more. All activities are included with normal museum admission.

TJC Science Center Offers Spring Break Camp

TJC Earth and Space Science Center featuring the Hudnall Planetarium at Tyler Junior College is located on the Tyler Junior College campus at 1411 E. Lake St., Tyler. Tickets can be purchased at sciencecenter.tjc.edu.

The Tyler Junior College Earth and Space Science Center will offer a Spring Break Camp 9am-12 noon Monday-Friday, March 9th-13th. Campers in grades 1 through 4 will explore the solar system and the planets as well as journey to the moon in the center’s newly updated Hudnall Planetarium.

They will also discover the science behind the changing seasons and launch their own miniature rockets.

“This year’s camp incorporates planetarium shows with hands-on, interactive STEM learning experiences to engage and inspire students over their spring break,” said Dr. Beau Hartweg, TJC science center director.

Each day will feature a different theme: • Monday: Exploring the Planets • Tuesday: Journey to the Moon • Wednesday: Space Rocks! Comets, Meteors and Asteroids • Thursday: Weather and Seasons • Friday: Space Exploration and Rockets Cost is $30 per day per child, and Science Center members receive a 10 percent discount. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended. The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 4th.

The center is also open to the public during spring break, 9:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday, and 10:30am-4:30pm Saturday.

2020 Census Art Contest at Tyler Public Library

Ranch of Dreams Bus Tours

Visit the Ranch of Dreams! The Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch is a worldrenowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas that was founded in 1979 by author and animal advocate Cleveland Amory. The sanctuary is not a zoo but is now open to the public two times per month for small, prescheduled, guided tours to respect the peace and privacy of the animals.

Tours are March 7th, 28th, April 11th, 25th, May 9th and 23rd.

On these tours, you can go on an inspirational journey through 1,400 acres of the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch to see and hear about more than 800 domestic and exotic animals that have been saved from lives of neglect and abuse. This bus tour will take you past dynamic enclosures and rolling pasture. Your guide will share a video presentation, and you’ll learn why many of the animals needed to be rescued and came to be at the ranch.

While they can’t guarantee sightings of specific residents, you may see Penelope, a pot-bellied pig found wandering down a street after being abandoned; or Midge, a male chimp previously used in medical research.

This year the Tyler ISD Opportunity Fair is changing their format and will be holding the Opportunity Fair in the afternoon from 1-4pm.

FINE ARTS Inside the Artist’s Studio:

The Dreamcatcher: Ray Sikes

By Derrick White “My experience with art started with Ms. Bobbin. I lived in a small, poor mining town.

The school did not have an art program, but in the fifth grade, a roving art teacher was employed to conduct an art class for one hour a week for each grade. I remember being quite excited by this experience. We did soap carvings from large bars of soap. I carved a rabbit. It was great,” remembers local artist Ray Sikes.

While attending college, Ray Sikes became interested in theatre and scene design. At community college, Sikes took art classes because the teacher was a famous native artist. He later transferred to a university and continued to major in theatre. Afterward, Ray enrolled at Baylor University for a Master’s degree in Theatre in Scene and Lighting Design. After graduating from Baylor, Sikes started teaching set design and lighting at a community college in St. Louis, then moved to Washington D.C. and worked as an assistant to a noted sculptor. Afterward, he ended up in West Virginia where he became Managing Director for an art complex, but resigned and moved to Tyler so he and his wife, Linda, could care for her aging mother.

Ray recalls, “In Tyler, I played golf almost every day for two years. I became very bored.

I told Linda I wanted to start taking some art classes. I had always wanted to just draw and paint full time, though I had been painting and drawing some during all my teaching years. I signed up for a life drawing class at the University of Texas at Tyler. Then I took a sculpture class. Karen Powell, the department chair at the time, told me if I were going to keep taking classes I should just earn a degree in painting. I told her I already had two degrees why would I need another, but she convinced me. Since I already had a Bachelors’ degree, it only took me about two years to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing.”

During the time Ray was taking classes at UT Tyler, he was asked to start working for the department. Ray was the gallery director for the university’s Meadows Gallery. The Meadows Gallery is located within the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Tyler and features rotating exhibitions throughout the year. The exhibition schedule includes nationally known guest artists, the Annual International Exhibition, faculty curated shows, Master of Fine Arts degree thesis exhibitions, and an annual student juried exhibition. The Annual International Exhibition is juried by an invited guest artist, historian or critic. The current 35th Annual International Exhibition is on view through March 6th, and was juried by independent curator Leslie Moody Castro. The Meadows Gallery will feature Jessica Sanders’ M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition March 16th-20th with a reception on March 17th. Nora Schreiber’s MFA Thesis Exhibition in the Meadows Gallery will run March 30th-April 3rd with a reception on March 31st.

“After my first few painting and drawing classes at UT Tyler, I realized I wanted to explore my native heritage through art.

This started me on a research exploration about native aboriginals. This research led me to see most native arts had a spiritual/social conscience content. It just was not art for art’s sake; it had a societal purpose.

I ask myself how this could be portrayed through my art.

I came to use native forms like shields, deer skins, beads, and feathers.

Plus, after visiting the Denver Art Museum and seeing original ledger paintings, I realized that the native style of painting was very flat and did not follow the western strictures of perspective. I have tried to paint in this way; although, there are times when I forget and revert to the Western canon. It is hard to forget how one was trained.”

“One of my first shields was made from rose bush stalks tied with leather and stretched over with tanned deerskin. I painted the pictures on the shield with red clay from my yard. I then realized I did not want to take the time to find and process natural dyes, so now I paint with acrylic paint on tanned leather. I tried oil paint first, but it tends to bleed into the leather surrounding the object leaving an oil stain.”

“I think calmness is a gift from my art.

When I am in my studio and working on some piece, I am in the ‘flow’ much of the time. There was one noted artist who said, ‘When I go into my studio all my friends are there in my mind, then after a while, it is just me, then I leave and my work of making an art piece begins.’ I start to work on a certain piece and when I look up four hours have passed on the clock and I am calm.”

“The first one is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a 19th-century post-impressionism painter, who recorded many details of the late-19thcentury bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Lautrec mastered many visual art forms: printmaking, drawing, painting, caricaturist, and illustrator. Because of his title and disability, he was accepted into many levels of society, but he chose mostly to paint from the lower classes.

He especially liked the people of dance halls and brothels. I find his work honest and clearly stated.”

“Fritz Scholder is a native 20th-century artist, who mostly paints natives. His ‘most influential works were post-modern insensibility and somewhat pop art in execution as he sought to deconstruct the mythos of the American native.’

Fritz was a Luiseno native, part of the California Mission culture. I like his work because it pushes the edge of work by natives about natives. Since a lot of my work is about natives on this continent, he gives me inspiration and insight into what I think about what I want to paint.”

The second annual Van Go Art Fair takes place in Van from 10am-5pm April 11th at Van City Park. The Van Go Art Fair is held at 300 VZCR 1527, Van. It is free to attend.

The juried art show features hand-crafted jewelry, paintings, metal art, wood work, fiber art, glass, pottery, ceramics, and mixed media.

A variety of talented musicians perform authentic Texas Jazz and Americana music throughout the day in the pavilion with gourmet coffee, wine, and chocolates. Ginny Mac adds to the “sidewalk cafe in Paris” ambience with her dynamic group that brings a fresh and exciting twist to vocal and instrumental music stylings.

The food truck court features gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, authentic Mexican food with an island twist, grilled meats, popsicles, and more.

The Van Go Costume Contest offers a $200 cash prize to the best “Dress Like a Famous Painting” competition. Another activity during the day includes a large Van Gogh painting backdrop for selfies. This is also a pet-friendly event.

A Van Go Kids area has several projects for kids of all ages and the Van ISD STEAM Bus is on hand to give kids even more opportunities in their mobile maker space. A Young Artists Exhibition features local student artwork.

The event is co-produced by the City of Van and the Van Zandt Arts & Cultural District Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that promotes the arts for education and tourism for Van ISD and the district communities of Edom, Van, and Ben Wheeler. The 16th Annual High School Art Exhibition March 29th-May 3rd

March 29th-May 3rd, the 16th Annual High School Art Exhibition will be on display in the North Gallery.

The TMA offers dozens of aspiring artists the opportunity to show their work in a full-scale, professionally curated museum exhibition with this enduring program. Entry is open to all senior-level high school students as selected by their art instructors, with an average of 70 young artists participating each year.

The showcase also includes an “Up & Coming” category for junior-level art students exhibiting their work outside the competition. Four outstanding works as selected by the jurors, including an overall “Best in Show,” will be presented with “Merit of Honor” awards during the Opening Reception and Awards

Plaza Gallery, formally Gallery Main Street, is now located at 110 N. College Ave., Downtown Tyler. “We spent 10 years in the old space, growing and celebrating the Art scene here in Downtown Tyler. As the new chapter in our journey begins, we are thrilled about the new space and the possibilities it holds for our Art Community. With a new space and new initiatives, the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC) has started the re-branding process. We will soon announce the new name and logo for the Gallery! “The Success of Smith County Texas Women”

Organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, “Lone Star Impressions II: Prints by Flatbed Press” highlights more than 30 fine art multiples created in a variety of techniques from over the years. The exhibition heavily focuses on artists that live in Texas or have strong ties to the region. The show features works by John Alexander, Keith Carter, Luis Jimenez, Melissa Miller, Liz Ward, and Joan Winter, among many others.

Founded in Austin in 1989 by Katherine Brimberry and Mark Lesly Smith, Flatbed Press has worked with artists from all over the world.

Their editions can be found in private and public collections around the world.

This exhibition is a continuation in the “Lone Star Impressions” exhibition series showcasing Texas-based printmaking studios and promoting education in printmaking processes.

This will be on exhibit through May 31st.

There will be a Gallery and Artist Talk with Katherine Brimberry (Co-founder and Director of Flatbed Press) at 2:30pm on March 1st.

Plan now to come by every Wednesday in April for live music at the Tyler Museum of Art. Concerts begin at 12 noon. Seeking Entries for 15th annual Life in Tyler Photography Contest

The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department is seeking entries for the 2020 Life in Tyler photography contest. Entries will be accepted from March 2nd-10th. “Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories” will be presented on the Tyler Civic Theatre’s stage. Five of Rudyard Kipling’s “Just So Stories,” including “How the Camel Got His Hump,” “How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin,” and “How the Elephant Got His Trunk,” are included here. The tales are brought vividly to life by Kipling’s young daughter, Elsie, and a group of new friends she has made during a visit with her aunt while her parents are away. The ending, which holds a surprise or two, is moving and uplifting as Elsie learns something about herself and her friends as well. This is a 2 part workshop to help from playwriting conception to production to publication. This class is taught by Michael Ward, who has been writing plays for over 25 years.

He has a master’s degree in theatre specializing in playwriting from Texas A&M University in Commerce and will be getting his master of fine arts in Playwriting and Dramaturgy from the University of Idaho in May. As Holly pulls Fred into her world of spontaneous parties and luxury, he finds himself increasingly fascinated with this captivating woman. This will be presented on the Henderson Civic Theatre stage. Based on the 1980 movie of the same name, it features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and centers on the downtrodden working lives of three women, Violet, Judy, and Doralee.

They all work at Consolidated Industries, which is presided over by the sexist, lecherous, and pompous Franklin Hart. The Henderson Civic Theatre is located at 122 E. Main St., Henderson.
