To Do Cowan Center Rocks the 20192020 Season:
“Bandstand” and “The Color Purple”
Fall is here and the fun continues at Cowan Center in Tyler. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Cowan Center box office at (903)566-7424 or visiting in person 9am-4pm Monday-Friday. You can also purchase tickets online at cowancenter.org. All events are performed in the Cowan Center located on the campus of The University of Texas at Tyler, 3900 University Boulevard – FAC 1120, Tyler. More information can be found at CowanCenter.org. Upcoming productions are: Bandstand Thursday, November 7th (7:30pm) From three-time Tony Award® winner and Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler comes an inspiring new American musical that explodes with infectious music and high-octane, heart-stopping dancing. It’s 1945, and six soldiers return from war to a changed nation. When NBC announces a national competition to find America’s next great musical superstars, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally feel like they have a place to call home. “The show defies you not to be moved.” (Time Out New York). “Popovich: Comedy Pet Theater” Thursday, November 14th (12 noon and 7pm) Put your paws together for the World Famous Popovich Comedy Pet Theater! This newfangled family-friendly production features funnyman Gregory and his cast of daring jugglers, harebrained clowns, and over 30 animals including cats, dogs, geese, doves, and parrots. Mr. Popovich and his extraordinary Pets (all rescued shelter animals) have been featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” and as a finalist on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” This is for grades K-5. Ticket orders are now being accepted. The Color Purple Monday, November 18th (7:30pm) The Color Purple is the 2016 Tony Award® winner for Best Musical Revival! Hailed as “a direct hit to the heart” (The Hollywood Reporter), this joyous American classic about a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South has conquered Broadway in an all-new “ravishingly reconceived production that is a glory to behold.” (The New York Times). Martina McBride Tuesday, December 3rd (8pm) With multiple Grammy® nominations, country icon Martina McBride’s incomparable vocals have garnered six No. 1 hits and twenty top ten singles (“Independence Day,” “This One’s For The Girls,” “A Broken Wing”). With more than 15 major music awards, including four wins from the Country Music Association and three Academy of Country Music Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, McBride has sold more than 18 million albums to date and has earned multiple Gold, Platinum, Double Platinum, and Triple Platinum certifications. This winter, the celebrated singer takes to the stage with an unforgettable Martina McBride concert experience you’ll never forget. An Evening with Rita Moreno, Legend of Stage and Screen Thursday, January 16th (7:30pm) For her break-out role as Anita in “West Side Story,” Moreno landed an Oscar. Decades later, as one of only three Americans to receive a Peabody®, Emmy®, Grammy®, Oscar®, and Tony Award®, Rita Moreno remains one of the busiest stars in show business. Most recently, she starred in the

critically-acclaimed Latino remake of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom “One Day at a Time” on Netflix. Prior to that, Rita appeared in guest-starring roles in primetime TV series such as “Getting On,” “Jane The Virgin,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Grace and Frankie.” Moreno received the Kennedy Center Honor for her lifetime contributions to American Culture and was honored by her peers as the 50th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. STOMP Thursday, February 6th (7:30pm) STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique, and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured; and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.” STOMP. See what all the noise is about! More performances: • Thursday, February 20th (7:30pm): The Pointer Sisters • Thursday, February 27th (10am and 12:30pm): “Cuentos” Performed by David Gonzales • Saturday, February 29th (7:30pm): Cirque Éloize Hotel • Thursday, March 26th (7:30pm): “BEAUTIFUL: The Carole King Musical” • Thursday, April 2nd (7:30pm): “Menopause: The Musical” • Tuesday, April 14th (7:30pm): Carly Fiorina

We were playing so many shows we could just get up there and do the tunes, right? Well, now it’s a new band playing new songs so we’ve got to learn everything, get our game together and practice. It’s a whole lot of fun. I can’t sleep at night. It keeps me awake, not from worry but from excitement. We’re just ready to tear it up.” For more info go to outhousetickets.com/Event/12443-Red_White_and_Blue_Festival/.

Music Country To The Bone:
Darrin Morris Band By Johnny Griffith One of the many things I enjoy about getting to interview local musicians is the ability to follow them over the years and watch them perfect their craft in front of audiences around the area. One of the acts I’ve always enjoyed keeping up with has been the Darrin Morris Band. DMB is one of the hardest working bands in East Texas, constantly adding shows to their calendar and you can literally see them all over the East Texas landscape, sometimes on opposite sides of the region in the same week. The band is anchored by Darrin Morris on vocals and consists of long-time members Jeremy Moore on drums, Blake Watson on bass, and Michael Olson on guitar; and they’ve recently added veteran guitarist Philip Griffith to the roster as well. Playing a dynamic mix of favorite country hits as well as a solid lineup of originals that consistently show up on the Texas Country Radio charts, the Darrin Morris Band is a fantastic reminder of all that is good about country music: relatable lyrics, memorable music, and an authentic delivery on stage. I recently had a chance to catch up to Darrin at the East Texas Taco Fest in Marshall and we sat down to catch up a bit. Johnny: It’s been about 3 years since we last talked for EGuide and you guys have had a lot going on. What have been some of the highlights since then? Darrin: Man, so much has happened in the last 3 years it would take me forever to tell. I guess a couple of the most significant things would be releasing our latest album this past year and we had one of our songs go to number 31 on the Texas charts. That same song “Green Eyed Texas Angel” also has over a half million streams on Spotify. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you guys averaging these days? Darrin: I’d say we are probably averaging about 10 shows a month, so we’re blessed to be staying pretty busy right now; but we’re always on the lookout for more opportunities to get our music out there to our fans, old and new. Johnny: What has been the most memorable gig the last couple of years? Darrin: We’ve had the privilege to take the stage for some really awesome gigs over the last couple years. I would say one of the most fun was the Houston Rodeo two years ago. We played the after-party the same night Luke Bryan played on the main stage and the place was absolutely packed. That crowd was really amazing. Another great gig the past couple of years would be the Texas Country Music Cruise, which was a blast to do. Johnny: Speaking of the Texas Country Music Cruise, by the time this goes to print, you’ll have just gotten back from this year’s version. Tell us a little about what that is and how excited you guys are to be in that lineup? Darrin: The Texas Country Music Cruise is a 7 day tour of the Caribbean with some of the biggest
names in Texas country putting on shows each night. We’ve actually done that 2 years in a row now and just got a contract for year 3. It is definitely one of the most fun gigs we have ever been a part of and we are absolutely looking forward to next year. The lineup of musicians is always amazing, we get to play for some amazing fans, and we’re on a cruise! Johnny: What have been the biggest challenges you and the band have dealt with since we last talked? Darrin: There are plenty of challenges to pursuing music for a living, but honestly, at the end of the day, it’s always the same challenge for a working band: money. Most people don’t realize how much money it takes to keep a band up and running. There’s always something that needs replacing, travel expenses, equipment upgrades, and plenty of other things that always seem to pop up at the most inopportune times. Johnny: You’ve had several singles released over the past couple of years. How has the response on Texas Country Radio been? Darrin: Texas radio has been very good to us. To date I think we’ve released five singles and our best one so far has been “Green Eyed Texas Angel” which landed at #31. We just released our latest single “Dancing in the Rain” and have big expectations for it as well. Johnny: Anything you’re really excited about or on the radar the rest of the year into 2020? Darrin: We have a ton of shows lined up to round out 2019 and we’re already looking forward to 2020. We’ve got several big opportunities in the works for next year and are excited for the journey moving forward. Johnny: What’s the next big move for you and the band? New album? Tour more outside of Texas? Darrin: We are going to release a new set of songs after the first of the year, but we aren’t sure if it will just be an EP or a full album yet. We are definitely working on trying to tour more outside of Texas for next year but always want to leave plenty of dates available for our core fans here at home. Johnny: Anything else on your mind before we wrap it up? Darrin: We just want to make sure and thank everyone here in East Texas for all the support over the last few years. This is an incredible ride we’re on, but we’re really just getting started. We can’t do what we do without our amazing fans and we thank them so much for everything. We love every single one of them and hope to see them all very soon. Follow the Darrin Morris Band at darrinmorrisband.com and facebook.com/ darrinmorrisbandmusic.

Taking Every Footstep To Heart:
Gary Patrick By Johnny Griffith
Month to month I talk to a lot of musicians here in East Texas. Either I’m interviewing them for EGuide, or playing with them on stage, or catching one of their shows in between gigs. One of the things I always enjoy asking when we talk is “Who excites you in the East Texas music scene?” People are always happy to share who they’ve seen lately that they enjoyed or who I need to go see, and the list is as diverse as the group of people I’m asking. However, there is one name who kept popping up on enough lists that I finally had to stop and give him a listen. That name was Gary Patrick. Originally born in Tyler, Gary took a circuitous route around the country over the next several years that saw his career as a working musician begin in Southern California and from there would take him all over the country and even as far away as Europe before bringing him back to where he started, right here in East Texas. With a gift for telling a story and the musical chops to back it up, Patrick is part Pat Green, part Tom Petty, but yet completely Gary Patrick. His latest single, “Man’s Gotta Have Some Fun,” cracked the top 50 in 8 weeks, and he was recently nominated for “new male vocalist of the year” in the Texas Regional Radio & Music Awards. I was lucky enough to grab some time with Gary in between stops on his radio station tour to sit down and find out more about the man that has local musicians talking. Johnny: What is your earliest memory in music? Gary: My mother’s jewelry box had a wind-up music harp in it. The song was “Fur Elise” by Ludwig Van Beethoven. I was mesmerized by that melody and kept coming back to open the magic music box. I was around three years old. Johnny: You grew up in a very musical family, but when did you have that moment when you wanted to start learning it for yourself? Gary: My older brother Ronnie, who is 12 years older than me, played guitar and taught me a few things when I was tiny. I couldn’t wrap my hand around the neck of the guitar so I played the strings almost like a piano from the top of the fretboard. At 10 years old, my folks took me to Mundt Music here in Tyler, circa 1981, where I met my most impressionable music mentor, guitar teacher and friend, Tom Russell. Tom taught me from age 10 until I was almost 18. To make a long story short, the answer to your question is sometime around ten or eleven. I still remember how music took a firm hold on me. What I didn’t understand then but clearly understand now is that I really didn’t choose music, but rather it chose me. I was innocent and helpless but I loved how music made me feel, and that learning an instrument was a deeper connection with something that would always be with me. Johnny: At what point did you start thinking this was something you wanted to be more than just a hobby and perhaps try to make a career out of it? Gary: That moment came in 1990. I graduated high school in 1989 and moved to Southern California, where I was attending college courses for an Aeronautical Engineering program. I also love flying and thought of making a career as a pilot. I was two semesters in when I realized my heart just wasn’t in

Learn to be objective with your lyrics and make certain the story holds true from the first to last word. Vocally, get yourself some coaching! Especially if you tend to write songs that peak your vocal range. If you are struggling at all with singing your songs, either change the key or realize that you may need help. Incredible vocal coaches from Los Angeles and Las Vegas can teach you via Skype. In my 30 year career, I wouldn’t have survived vocally without having the knowledge I learned from years of coaching. Knowing vocal technique will only serve you better in the studio. If you are an artist without a band and want to record a single or a few songs, reach out and find a producer who can put together a recording session and hire players for you. Sometimes you just don’t have all the answers, so it’s time to build relationships. Be serious about your art but don’t take yourself too seriously! This is something that I can speak from experience with. Being intense is a good thing, but remember to relax and enjoy this. Everyone else will enjoy it more too. Johnny: Do you primarily perform with a full band or more solo work these days? Gary: I perform solo, acoustic trio, acoustic four piece and full electric band...whatever the venue or show calls for. Johnny: What do you have coming up the rest of this year into 2020 that we can look forward to? Gary: We are playing several shows per week, all over the East Texas area. You can always check our calendar on my website: garypatrick.love. Johnny: The East Texas music scene has a great collaborative vibe to it, seemingly more so than other areas I’ve experienced over the years. To what would you attribute this sense of community the local musicians in this area seem to share? Gary: I talk about this all the time, Johnny. I love how much music there is in East Texas. I love seeing so many artists and musicians happily supporting one another. East Texas is a great community that fosters some amazing relationships. On top of that you have so many venues now that support live entertainment. All of that encourages excellence. You know, I’ve personally never been a huge fan of the singing contest TV shows. It’s not how I built a lasting career as a musician or refined my skills and relationships. However, I’ve noticed since shows like “The Voice,” “American Idol,” etc., SO many talented singers/musicians have emerged and a new generation of folks are inspired. The Texas Country scene has completely blown up and offers opportunity for artists and musicians to cultivate a career. Like any career, there’s lots to learn and dues to pay along the way, and that’s where I am in this. I’m promoting singles to Texas Radio, driving to little radio stations all over the state, and meeting new folks that love music. Trying to move the machine out of my 100 mile orbit and grow new fans. It’s hard work. There are times when I want to swing a hammer instead of a guitar, but then I regroup and realize this is what I do. Johnny: So the last question is hypothetical. You’re stuck on a remote island for the next year and can take one album, and one album only...what is it? Gary: Oh that’s easy.. At Old Firehouse in Edom This Month:
November Concerts Feature Neal Katz, Tim Chauvin, and Bill Nash
Ten years and still going strong, The Old Firehouse in Edom continues its season with Neal Katz, Tim Chauvin, and Bill Nash November 2nd. Neal Katz (katzmusic.com) has been making folk music for over twenty-five years. Originally from Virginia Beach, VA, he is now a local folk musician who performs his music at coffee-houses, folk festivals, living room concerts, and more. Over the years, Neal has been an opening act for a number of popular musicians as they passed through East Texas. In 2010, he was chosen as a finalist for the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Concerts. In his quest to promote his fellow local artists, Neal produced a compilation CD in 2007 called "Rise Up." It was made up of East Texas singer/songwriters and benefited a social-service agency in Tyler, TX called PATH. Tim Chauvin was born and raised in New England, specifically in Massachusetts, and spent his college years in the Great Lakes region. He moved to Texas in 1981 and he and his family live on a small farm in Nacogdoches County in a home they built. During the early 1980’s Tim was a touring musician, but left the craft to pursue another artistic outlet in Timber Framed architecture. However, he continued to write music and perform intermittently around the country. In 2003 he released his debut CD “Winds of Change”. It was well received and garnered numerous kind reviews. Sing Out magazine said, “If you’re craving wonderfully written story songs in simple but beautiful arrangements, this CD is for you." Tim returns to The Old Firehouse to share these stories with our audience. Bill Nash has been a musician all his life. He was a 5-year-old boy soprano, a 4th grade French hornist, a 15-year-old beginning guitarist, and then an 18-year-old guitar teacher. He graduated from Bradley University's School of Music, majoring in composition, and an almost master's degree from time at the University of Colorado. Bill began
writing music and lyrics in his early teens, and his roots are firmly embedded in what is now known as the singer/songwriter acoustic music genre. He has performed styles as diverse as rock 'n roll, fusion, country, polka, folk, and even old-time western music, ala the Sons of the Pioneers. Bill has 3 albums with songs ranging from love songs to heartbreak songs, true stories to completely imaginative fabrications, and protest songs to environmental songs. He is a regular attendee at Kerrville, and Old Firehouse is thrilled to welcome him back. November 23rd, Pierce Pettis will be in concert. After a lifetime of crafting finelywrought, hearttouching songs, singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis feels that he’s finally found his comfort zone. “The biggest change,” he says of this point in his career, “has been getting over myself and realizing this is a job and a craft. And the purpose is not fame and fortune (whatever that is) but simply doing good work.” Pierce began his long career as a writer/artist at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, and later as a staff songwriter for Polygram/Universal Music in Nashville. He is adored by critics and public alike, as one of this generation's most masterful songwriters. His music

is distinguished by his uncanny ability to capture the common elements in human experience by drawing on the humor and trials in daily life. “Pierce Pettis doesn’t write mere songs, he writes literature...End to end the songwriting is brilliant...Pierce Pettis albums are events in my listening. His writing just gets better all the time and his singing is marvelous, wry and warm..." -Sing Out! "Pierce Pettis bares a gentle soul with a keen eye, a soulful voice, and perfect guitar accompaniment for his beautiful songs - a masterful poet treasure" - Darrell Scott, songwriter/recording artist Pierce has been on The Old Firehouse stage numerous times...always to a standing ovation crowd. The Old Firehouse in Edom is the only “listening room” in the area where audiences can enjoy a “coffee house” atmosphere of the ’70s, with national and international singer/songwriters performing their own music up close and personal. In fact, over the past ten years, listeners have anxiously looked forward to the new seasons of music because they know that there is never a bad show. Even if they are unfamiliar with the musician, they trust the selections made by their host, owner, and founder Jeff Gottesman. Since 2009, musicians and audiences alike have been flocking to this little gem, and Jeff hopes that the secret of this wonderful experience will get out even further and the 70 seats will be filled even more often than they have in the past. The season consists of nine acoustic concerts between October and April with folk genres
typically described as Americana, Orchestral Folk, Traditional, and Mountain. Every performance consists of strictly original songs that are both composed and performed by the musician who has created them. Don't expect notefor-note performances matching their recordings....that's not what live music is about. But do expect heartfelt introductions, personal stories, and backand-forth communications between the audience and the performer. The full season schedule can be found under the “Concert Calendar” tab at theoldfirehouse.net along with links to samples of music and advance ticket options. Admission prices for concerts are usually $12 in advance and $15 and the door, and events are on Saturday evenings unless otherwise noted, beginning at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm so the audience can enjoy coffee and desserts that are always available during the “schmooze hour.” The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smoke-free, and alcohol-free “Coffeehouse” which has made a name for itself by bringing national folk musicians and their all-original music to Edom’s unique listening room and stage. Information about upcoming music, sponsorships, and advertising can be found by contacting The Old Firehouse at theoldfirehouse.net, info@theoldfirehouse.net or by phone at (903)852-ART1 (2781). The concert series is a labor-of-love by owners Jeff & Judy Gottesman, as they don’t expect to make any kind of profit from this endeavor; however, sponsorships of the concerts are always appreciated. Future scheduled concerts are: • December 7th: American Dreamer • January 18th, 2020: The Rough and Tumble • February 1st, 2020: Rupert Wates • February 22nd, 2020: Jeff Black • March 7th, 2020: Friction Farm • April 4th, 2020: Adler & Hearne

Art
Inside the Artist’s Studio:
Dream Until Your Dreams Come True: Carina Alvarado By Derrick White “The most important things art has brought to my life are the abilities to express, communicate, and connect. I am not great with words, especially expressing meaning without getting jumbled. Art is the language in which I feel the most comfortable communicating. I have found a way to express myself freely in a visual way and explain what is in my heart and soul,” explains local artist Carina Alvarado. Her artwork is vibrant and uses graphic and bursting compositions of surreal imagery to captivate one’s imagination. Carina uses a variety of media. “I really enjoy working with acrylics, but I recently tried watercolor and gouache and I have fallen in love with these materials. I enjoy the way they work together. The process of understanding these collaborations really interests me. I tend to use a little of everything in my pieces,” she states. “When I decided to quit my full-time job and focus on art, it was terrifying. Taking the decision and explaining it to the people around me - to me, felt like the first challenge as an artist. The frustration of feeling like you have to convince people it is what drives you as a person right after you convinced yourself to take the leap towards passion. There is so much behind the scenes in the amount of work, motivation, money - just the whole process of becoming an artist. I understand being an artist is an art form in and of itself, a journey. You can attend classes, you can watch videos, you can ask for advice, but you yourself have to create something. You don’t apply to be an artist. The application is progressing and developing in personally growing in this unpredictable life, in your studio hours, experimenting with media and ideas, putting yourself and what you create out there. This application can go any which way; it can be short or long, but you never really get told you are an artist in this process. You, as the artist, have to keep creating. You have to stay motivated. You have to keep exhibiting your art,” encourages Carina. Alvarado took painting, drawing, figure drawing, art history, and ceramic classes at TJC. She recalls, “While attending TJC, I met inspiring art professors. I remember Paul Jones sketching out new characters and ideas. I remember Derrick White being hands-on, teaching us how to stretch canvases. He was always trying out new techniques and painting. I learned what I needed to understand about art in my classes, but I had such inspiring professors to facilitate my creativity and my motivation outside of class. TJC art professors are active, professional artists and they speak about the things you have to do to show your work. They being enthusiastically productive and helping students understand, realistically, about being a visual artist were enough for me to start my journey into visual art.” She adds, “In my studio art classes I found my fear of speaking in front of people was very minimal. Being surrounded by art and creative people provided me with so much confidence and provided a beautiful and personal way for me to connect to people. Art has made me push myself. I pressed myself to share the art I had been so private about by creating an Instagram and submitting my pieces to events. I stepped out of my comfort
Events November 2nd (7-11pm): 5% Show at Martin Walker P.C. - A new art exhibition featuring art by Monica Lubiani, Maegan Kirschner, Brenda McKinney, Ginger Cochran, Lina Rincon, Leticia Herrera, Rodica Slemmer, Deborah Hartigan-Viestenz, and Reanna DiPaolo will open November 2nd in Downtown Tyler at Martin Walker Law Firm, 121 N. Spring St. They will host the show in its award-winning facility,
zone, meeting Addie Moore (a founder of “etx creatives”), attending events full of people I did not know. I submitted art to juried exhibitions and was accepted to some and rejected by others. I went on a podcast with “etx creatives” and spoke about my art, I was super terrified to speak and to be recorded but the excitement was much greater. Art has made me grow so much as a person, every day I learn something new about myself.” Carina finds inspiration in the work of artist Ashley Longshore. “She is a strong, creative, and powerful woman who does not hold back. I admire her fun, colorful, and powerful paintings. Her art represents her so well; she says ‘You are in my brain.’ I respect artists taking me to another place in their minds and worlds,” Carina explains. Alvarado also enjoys Salvador Dali, saying, “My admiration for his dreamlike, symbolic and surreal art made me feel connected to him. I hope one day I can perfect what I see and what I feel in an art form as well.” “I suppose my style is colorful surrealism, a glance into my extremely vivid lucid dreams. I have always had a very imaginative mind, but every night ever since I can remember I experienced crystal clear dreams. My dreams are other worlds to me, I know it sounds strange. I always remember waking up and writing down all the strangeness I had seen, all the experiences and the things I would learn. Yes, I would learn. I quickly learned how to control my dreams. I have come to accept these strange dreams which have made them even more mesmerizing. This past year, I lost my grandfather and my youngest uncle. One thing which helped me tremendously with the loss of these two great men was something my mom told me had happened. A few weeks before my uncle had tragically passed, my grandpa had told the family to get everyone together and to prepare for a funeral which would have many people attending. He even spoke my uncle’s name and said it was for him, he had dreamed this. A few weeks later my uncle passed away suddenly. He was so loved by many people and many people attended the funeral. Afterward, my grandpa spoke about a little angelic boy visiting and signaling for him to be followed, a few weeks later my grandfather passed away. The day after the funeral there were bees everywhere but they did not sting us. Swarms just landed on plants, walls, and the ground. Later, I researched the symbolism of this event, bees are productive, they stay focused on whatever they are doing and do not get sidetracked. Around this time of the year, I was beginning my huge leap of faith into becoming a full-time artist. So, I decided to dive into my dreams and symbolism of the beautiful and tragic things happening around me.” Contact at: • Instagram: @carinaoteroalvarado • Facebook: Carina.Alvarado • Email: carinaoalvarado@gmail.com which historically served as the Arcadia Theater but now serves as the law firm’s headquarters. Complimentary refreshments will be served during the evening. There will be an afterparty by DJ Klinz. This show is organized by AASH and Dace Lucia Kidd. There is free admission to see the art show and a cover of $5 after 9pm for the afterparty. The show will be on view until January 4th, 2020. November 15th: Call for Artists, Poets & Musicians - This is a call for artists, poets, and musicians for an exhibition which begins on January 18th, 2020. The Tyler Museum of Art celebrates the career of an influential abstract expressionist with strong ties to the Tyler community in its next major exhibition, “Bold Lines: Works by Joseph Glasco.” The exhibition opens to the public Sunday, November 24th and runs through February 16th, 2020 in the Museum’s Bell Gallery. Members and special guests are invited for a first look at the exhibition during the Preview Reception from 5:30-7pm Saturday, November 23rd at the Museum. To RSVP or for information on becoming a TMA member, call (903)595-1001, or visit tylermuseum.org. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Bold Lines” surveys the vast body of work by Glasco (1925-1996), an artist born in Oklahoma but raised in Tyler. His artistic eye developed early as he grew up in East Texas, moving on to study art at the University of Texas at Austin before being drafted for military service in World War II. His career took off dramatically as a result of his inclusion in the groundbreaking 1952 MoMA exhibition “Fifteen Americans,” which also featured the work of luminaries such as Pollock, William Baziotes, and Mark Rothko. Glasco’s work eventually made its way into the permanent collections of some of the most prominent museums in the U.S. including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. TMA’s 10th Annual Middle School Day of the Dead Art Exhibition on Tap through November 3rd The Tyler Museum of Art celebrates a milestone in one of its increasingly popular education programs with the 10th Annual Middle School Day of the Dead Art Exhibition, open to the public through November 3rd. The exhibition will feature a display of artwork in the TMA’s Education Classroom and lobby by sixth- through eighth-graders from Tyler and the surrounding area, representing middle schools including Dogan, Hubbard, Hogg, Moore and Three Lakes from Tyler Independent School District, as well as Chapel Hill Middle School, Cumberland Academy, Frankston Middle School, and Whitehouse Middle School. More than 400 students working across a broad range of media are expected to participate. The community is invited to join the Museum 2:30-4pm Sunday, November 3rd for an artists’ reception and celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the traditional Mexican holiday honoring memories of family and friends. The reception will include traditional food and art activities related to the holiday. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged. Call (903)595-1001 to EGuideMagazine.com •
RSVP. For information, visit tylermuseum.org. To coincide with the Day of the Dead celebration, an installation of selected pieces of Mexican folk art from the TMA’s Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection also will be on display through November 3rd in the Museum lobby. “Passing Through” on Exhibit “Passing Through: Works by Lloyd Brown, Pat Gabriel, and Sarah Williams” is organized by the Tyler Museum of Art. As the title suggests, the featured works explore scenes from the American landscape one might encounter while “passing through” a town or area. Despite the similar subjects, each individual artist has captured these overlooked spaces in their own unique way – elevating the mundane and making the ordinary extraordinary. This will be on exhibit through December 1st. “Books, Books & More Books: Works by MANUAL” The Tyler Museum of Art is continuing on another historic collaboration with a fellow Smith County nonprofit while exploring the printed word as a work of art in its major exhibition, “Books, Books & More Books: Works by MANUAL,” presented in collaboration with Literacy Council of Tyler. The exhibition runs through November 10th in the Museum’s Bell Gallery. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Books, Books & More Books” spotlights a series of photographic works from the ongoing “Book Project by MANUAL,” the artistic collaboration of Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill that began in 1974. The photographs from this series spotlight a wide variety of books in dynamic compositions “visually exploring their importance in our lives,” Caleb Bell said. “Many of our students, like others in Tyler, have never had the chance to interact with visual art in a museum setting, and to be able to introduce them to this world through the medium of books is a uniquely approachable and relatable opportunity,” said LCOT Executive Director Nancy Crawford. “I think this exhibition reveals the true nature of books as works of art, from the standpoint of the content inside, the cover art, and even the tactile experience of holding a book and turning its pages. We think the exhibition will show our students that reading is truly an artful experience that they can begin to enjoy and appreciate on so many new levels as they pursue their educations at Literacy Council of Tyler.”
