1 Boeing’s apology for the fatal 737 Max crashes has prompted more family members of victims of the Lion Air disaster to sue the company

More family members of victims of the Lion Air disaster are coming forward to sue Boeing, saying that an apology from the company's CEO for the two fatal plane crashes involving its 737 Max planes helps their legal case. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg last week issued an apology for the fatal Lion Air crash in October 2018, and th Ethiopian Airlines crash in March, which combined killed just under 350 people. "We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 MAX accidents, he said. "These tragedies continue to weigh heavily on our hearts and minds, and we extend our sympathies to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.“ But more family members of the Lion Air victims and their lawyers are now coming forward to take legal action against Boeing, saying that the apology helps their case, the Associated Press reported. 11 victims' family members are now joining dozens of other families that are already suing Boeing, they announced at a press conference. It was arranged by Kailimang & Ponto, a Jakarta-based law firm representing the families.

2 Merdian Agustin, who lost her husband in the crash, said at the conference: "Boeing's CEO explicitly apologized to 346 passenger families." "We hope this is good momentum to have compensation rights," she said, the AP reported. Agustin said at the press conference that her family and others refused to sign a document that would prevent them from sueing Lion Air and Boeing, and did not receive around $85,000 in compensation from Indonesia as a result. "We refused to sign such a document containing statements that are treating our loved ones like lost baggage," she said. "It's ridiculous and hurts us.“ The preliminary reports in the investigations into both crashes found that the planes' automated anti-stall system pushed the nose of the plane down after receiving a faulty sensor reading. Muilenburg acknowledged in his apology that both reports found the plane's automated system had acted in error, and said that Boeing was working on a fix that "will ensure accidents like that of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 never happen again." Boeing's 737 Max jets will remain grounded around the world as Boeing completes its software fix. They will not resume service until the Federal Aviation Administration and its equivalent regulators around the world approve the fix. Boeing announced on Friday that it will cut production of the plane model from 52 planes a month to 42 as investors express concerns about the impact of the crashes.

As flight-control system blamed for Boeing crash, Ethiopian pilots’ actions and speed also prompt questions Crash investigators believe an automated flight-control system that went haywire led to last month’s fatal crash of a Boeing Co. MAX in Ethiopia. But some pilots, industry officials and air-safety experts are also raising questions about the actions of the cockpit crew as detailed in last week’s preliminary accident report. Ethiopian aviation officials and executives at the plane’s operator, Ethiopian Airlines, have said the pilot and co-pilot followed all the steps that BoeingBA, 1.46% laid out to cope with a misfire of the plane’s MCAS stall-prevention system. The system is suspected in another fatal nose-dive of a 737 MAX aircraft in Indonesia in October. Both events also have put the spotlight on pilot actions to counter the MCAS’s faulty activation. In the case of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which crashed March 10, killing all 157 aboard, the plane maintained an unusually high speed during part of its short flight. The pilots also reactivated the suspect anti-stall system after manually overriding it—raising questions about why. The system, called MCAS for Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, is designed to automatically push the plane’s nose down when it is at risk of stalling. In both 737 MAX crashes the system misfired, and pilots, battling repeated “nose-down” commands from the system, lost control of the plane. Indonesian investigators probing last year’s Lion Air 737 MAX crash highlighted piloting and maintenance issues that required safety scrutiny, in addition to calling attention to the MCAS issue. The Ethiopian airliner’s high speed would have made it harder for pilots to manually pull the jetliner out of its dive, according to pilots and others participating in or closely tracking the probe. These experts also question why the pilots—contrary to Boeing’s emergency checklist—would have reengaged a system that they had identified as causing the plane to pitch downward in the first place. ‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬

1 Ethiopian Airlines crash: Blow by blow account of last six minutes of ill fated plane

According to a report filed by the Standard on Monday, April 8, the Boeing 737 Max-8 kept flying in a nose down position and could not respond to all emergency procedures pilots executed. Here is a detailed account of what happened between 8.37am and 8.44am on the dark morning of Sunday, March 10. 8.37:34 The control tower at Bole International Airport, in Addis Ababa gave crew nod to take off 8.38:00 The 737 Max-8 took off with accurate angle of attack (AOA) indications. 8.38:44 While climbing to the required cruising altitude, the captain's AOA indicator started indicating a conflicting angle from that of the first officer. READ ALSO: Akothee atangaza kuokoka ila asisitiza hataacha kuvalia nguo za kuanika utupu wake 8.38:58 The captain engaged the auto pilot hopping that it troubleshoots the differences in AOA. An auto pilot warning was heard.

1 I've taken more than 30 flights over the past year as I've traveled the world, and one airline has the best entertainment system, the friendliest staff, and the best service

In my year of traveling the world for Business Insider, I've visited more than 20 countries and have been on dozens of flights, including major US airlines, budget airlines, and flag carriers. In just the last year, I've flown United Airlines, Emirates Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, AirAsia, Scoot Airlines, Air Astana, Vueling, XL Airlines, Egypt Air, Etihad Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya Airways, Precision Air, Air France, Austrian Airlines, Ural Airlines, Tus Air, Cobalt Air, and WizzAir, among others. My favorite of the bunch, without a doubt, was Emirates Airlines. For me, a great flight comes down to a few simple things: helpful and friendly service, timeliness, and new planes. While many airlines I flew over the last year matched up in one or more of those areas, only Emirates delivered across the board. To start with, Emirates' fleet is made up exclusively of Airbus A380s — the largest and most expensive commercial airliner in history — and Boeing 777s. The airline's average plane age is only 6.2 years old, according to AirFleets. That means no matter what route you are on, you are flying on a relatively new and roomy plane. Both flights I took on Emirates were on A380s, leaving me with tons of legroom for an economy flight. The added benefit: Because the plane is so large — it can hold up to 800 people — the plane was only half full, which meant there was an empty seat next to me. ‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬

‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2

The staff is friendly and helpful On both my flights, the flight attendants were always willing to help. In particular, on my second flight (my first time trying out business class), the flight attendants came around to offer things I didn't even know I wanted. More than that, though, they were personable. They took the time to chat with passengers and get to know them. It made the flight fun in a way I'd never experienced before. While Emirates is ranked only 19th in the world in punctuality among mainstream airlines, it is currently ranked second in the Middle East — and it's improving. It ranked fourth last year. I experienced no late arrivals during my flights. The in-flight entertainment system is top-notch Meanwhile, the proprietary entertainment system, nicknamed ICE, was excellent. The entertainment options were extensive. There are over 1,800 channels of movies, television, and games, including most "Marvel," "Jurassic Park," and "Mission Impossible" films. There were also films from just about every world region, as well as the information channel with the latest headlines and articles from BBC News. Emirates doesn't skimp on service The only downside of the airline was the food. It's certainly not the best I've had on an airplane. That still goes to Japan Airlines, which provided tasty, fresh Japanese food. That being said, with airline after airline cutting back on meals and other goodies, Emirates goes a long way to show respect to its customers by not skimping on meals and handing out goodies like eye masks, headphones, earplugs, and socks on long-haul flights.

1 Airlines have completely stopped ordering the 737 Max New York (CNN Business)Airlines are holding off on orders for Boeing's 737 Max — the latest sign of how deeply the company's bestselling jet has been thrown into crisis. Boeing (BA) released data Tuesday that showed only 10 of the planes were ordered in the first two months of 2019. There were no orders in March, the month that a 737 Max jet flown by Ethiopian Airlines pilots crashed in that country, killing everyone aboard. It was the second fatal crash involving a Max in recent months. That small number compares to 112 orders for the plane in the first quarter of 2018. At that time, Southwest Airlines (LUV) had ordered 40 of the jets, while Ryanair ordered 25. Orders for Boeing's other commercial jets actually increased slightly. The company sold 85 other commercial jets last quarter, compared to 68 a year earlier. But the sales data for the Max gives the clearest picture yet of how much scrutiny of that model could be hurting Boeing's bottom line. Investigators are still probing the cause of the Ethiopian crash, as well as the other Max crash involving a Lion Air jet last October. The two accidents killed 346 people in all, and eventually prompted the grounding of all 737 Max planes last month. Boeing also halted deliveries and announced last week that it was scaling back production of the 737 Max. ‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2 The focus of the crash investigations is the plane's automatic safety system, for which Boeing says it is developing a software fix. The fatal crashes are not the only cause of the sales drop, said Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst for the Teal Group. He attributed much of the change to the massive number of orders for the next generation of single-aisle jets that both Boeing and rival Airbus had previously booked. Airbus actually had worse first quarter orders for its A320, its 737 Max competitor. "This is the mother of all frontloaded markets," said Aboulafia. Boeing has orders for 5,000 of the 737 Max jets on its books already. So far only one airline, Indonesia's Garuda, has outright canceled an order for 50 of the 737 Max jets since the grounding. Boeing also said Tuesday that all 737 deliveries in the first quarter fell by a third, to 89 from 132 a year ago. But most of that drop was caused by the reduced production and delivery of the older version of the 737 jet that Boeing is still building for some customers. Deliveries of the the older 737 jets fell by 66% to 32. Deliveries of the 737 Max increased by 54% compared to a year ago to 57, even with a two-week halt. That's because Boeing spent most of 2017 ramping up production of the Max.

Fiji Airways wet-leasing a Floridian B737NG

Fiji Airways (FJ, Nadi) has wet-leased a B737-800 from Miami Air International (LL, Miami Int'l) to cover the absence of its two B737-8s. The carrier said in a statement that subject to regulatory approval, the Boeing narrowbody would be deployed on Fiji Airways' flights from Nadi to each of Auckland Int'l, Apia Faleolo, Christchurch, and Brisbane Int'l. The jet will feature 166 Economy Class seats in a single cabin configuration. As such, all Business Class passengers booked onto Miami Air-operated flights will be affected. "Fiji Airways made the decision to lease an aircraft for the upcoming peak period to limit any disruptions to guests’ travel plans," it said. "While the airline recognises that the onboard experience and facilities will differ from its usual offering, it will do everything possible to ensure that guests continue to enjoy a comfortable experience. Fiji Airways will contact Business Class guests booked on flights which will now be operated by the leased aircraft to provide travel options." Fiji Airways also operates one B737-700, leased from Willis Lease Finance, as well as three B737-800s, leased from each of AerCap, DAE Capital, and Willis Lease Finance. Its two MAX 8s belong to GECAS

1 United adds A321XLR as possible 757 replacement

United Airlines has added the possible long-range Airbus "A321XLR" to its list of replacement options for some of its aging Boeing 757s, as it aims to replace the middle-of-the-market portion of its fleet in the next decade. The Chicago-based carrier estimates a need for 30-40 mid-market aircraft to replace both 757s and Boeing 767s from the mid-2020s, United president Scott Kirby told employees in a video of a San Francisco town hall held at the end of March that was viewed by FlightGlobal. The balance of its 757 and 767 fleet, which Cirium's Fleets Analyzer shows includes 127 aircraft, can be replaced by Boeing 737 Max 10 and Boeing 787-8 aircraft, he says. Another option is sub-optimising the fleet and replacing all of its 757 and 767s with 737 Max and 787s, adds Kirby. "We feel really good about the bulk of the narrowbody, the bulk of the widebody fleet," says Kirby. "That 30 to 40 airplanes for 757, 767 replacements we don't have a good answer for." United has firm orders for 45 Airbus A350-900s, 45 737 Max 9s, 100 737-10s, four Boeing 777-300ERs, 13 787-9s and seven 787-10s, Fleets Analyzer shows.

2 The carrier has been evaluating replacement options for its mid-market fleet for years. In 2018, United chief financial officer Gerry Laderman outlined how, in addition to the 737 Max and 787s on order, it was also looking at the Boeing New Mid-market Airplane (NMA) as well as the Airbus A330-800 and A321LR for the segment. "Our 767 and 757 replacement strategy will be a multi-faceted solution," he said in a June 2018 interview. It is common for airlines to consider all possible fleet options before placing an order. For example, the Lufthansa Group is considering narrowbody alternatives from Airbus, Boeing and Embraer for its next order, despite being a large Airbus A320 family operator. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which also face a mid-market replacement conundrum, have taken different approaches. American ordered 787-8s to replace its 767s but has yet to select a 757 replacement, while Delta has ordered A330-900s to replace some of its 767s and continues to evaluate options for the bulk of its 757 and 767 fleets. Airbus is studying a longer-range version of the A321LR, which industry observers have dubbed the A321XLR, but not provided any technical specifics or a timeline for the potential aircraft. The airframer delivered the first A321LR to Arkia Israeli Airlines in November. Guillaume Faury, president of Airbus' commercial aircraft division and chief executive of Airbus from 10 April, said in January that they are waiting for Boeing to make a move on a mid-market product before moving forward with the possible aircraft. However, Boeing has not commented on mid-market aircraft development since the 737 Max, the latest update of the US airframer's workhorse narrowbody, was grounded in March after two fatal crashes. United operated 14 737-9s when the type was grounded. In the video, Kirby says the airline has been "covering all the lines" with other aircraft in its fleet, whereas other US 737 Max operators American and Southwest Airlines have been cancelled flights. Fort Worth, Texas-based American has removed the 737 Max from schedules through 5 June, resulting in at least 7,560 cancellations of roughly 90 flights a day.
