1 Ethiopian Airlines: Africa's largest airline Image copyright Getty Images Ethiopian Airlines has been shaken by the crash that killed 157 people, but it is widely recognized as Africa's most successful airline. Voted the Best Airline in Africa in 2018, the airline's triumphs are arguably down to reasonably priced tickets, efficient service delivery, a good safety record and a wide network of flights. Ethiopian Airlines joined Star Alliance Network, an international airline network giving it access to more routes with partner airlines, in 2011. It is the largest airline in Africa and one of the few airlines turning a profit in the continent. In the financial year 2017/2018, Ethiopian Airlines made profits of $245m (£187m) and carried 10.6 million people. Founded in 1945 by Ethiopia's last emperor Haile Selassie, with the hope of modernising and shaking off the country's poverty-stricken image, the inaugural flight to Cairo via Asmara took place in December that year. 2 Ethiopian was the first African airline to take delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the 757 freighter and has invested in expanding and modernizing its fleet - and this has resulted in it having the youngest fleet in Africa. The average age of the Ethiopian aircraft is just 5.4 years, compared to 13.5 for British Airways, 15 years for United Airlines and 10.7 for American Airlines. Ethiopian is one of the safest airlines in Africa, however there have been four major, deadly accidents or incidents involving the carrier. The last Ethiopian Airlines plane crash happened in 2010 when flight ET409 caught fire five minutes after take-off from Beirut and plummeted into the Mediterranean two miles off the Lebanese coast, killing all 89 passengers and crew. A Lebanese investigation blamed pilot error for the crash but Ethiopian Airlines rejected the report, saying that the plane exploded, which according to their experts pointed to sabotage, a lightning strike or shooting down. In 1988 35 people died when an Ethiopian Airline plane's engines ingested pigeons and the aircraft caught fire during a belly-landing at Dahir Bar airport in Ethiopia. In 1996, a Boeing 767 was infamously hijacked and it ran out of fuel while flying from Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya. The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands, killing 125 of its 175 passengers. 3 It revived and owns a 49% stake in Malawi Airlines and a 45% stake in Zambia Airways and has announced plans to help re-launch a new airline in Mozambique. It is also in talks to establish smaller regional bases in Djibouti, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea. It already operates hubs in Malawi and Togo. This strategy of reviving defunct national airlines, launching more connections and setting up more hubs across Africa has helped Ethiopian Airlines become a leader in its industry. "Ethiopian has really come up with a very smart model for many years now," Max Kingsley-Jones, of aviation publisher FlightGlobal, told the BBC. "Airline Business [magazine] gave Tewolde Gebremariam [CEO of Ethiopian Airlines] an award for being the best airline serving a particular market. The airline has very extensive network and their strategy of flying into Addis Ababa and then carrying people around the region of Africa, all over Africa, has proven successful", he said. 4 Recently, Ethiopia overtook Dubai as the biggest transfer hub for long-haul travel to Africa, according to findings by Spanish travel consultancy ForwardKeys. The undergoing expansion at Ethiopia's main airport, the Bole International airport, will further enhance the Ethiopian aviation industry's presence in Africa. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate up to 22 million passengers a year - overtaking South Africa's OR Tambo International airport in Johannesburg. But that is not enough for Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. At the opening ceremony of Ethiopia's largest hotel, adjacent to the airport in January, he said: "We expect the Board and the Management [of Ethiopian Airlines] not to be complacent with the new terminal, but rather to aim for a bigger facility with a capacity to accommodate at least 100 million passengers." It said it was implementing "cautionary measures" by "engaging" the affected stakeholders, Boeing and Comair. Comair, which operates British Airways and low-cost carrier kulula.com, owns a Boeing 737 Max 8, which was delivered last month. The safety of this aircraft was brought into question when an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in Addis Ababa on Sunday, killing all 157 people on board. The SACAA said on Monday afternoon that it had made contact with both Comair and Boeing. "We confirm that there are two Boeing 737 Max 8 on the South African aircraft register belonging to one operator, of which only one of the aircraft is in operation,” said spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba. Ledwaba said to align with international protocols, the SACAA would not conduct any media interviews related to this particular aircraft accident. "In this case, the aircraft involved in the accident was not registered in South Africa and the accident did not occur within South African airspace. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Commenting without facts would therefore not be prudent," he said. Ledwaba added that the SACAA was monitoring the situation and would not hesitate to take any preventative measures, but these would be based on facts and not speculation. This was in the spirit of preserving the integrity of the country's air transport safety and security system. However, concerns have continued about the region’s largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria. This was disclosed in the International Air Transport Association )IATA(’s global passenger traffic results for January 2019, showing traffic (revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) rose 6.5 per cent compared to January 2018. IATA, noted that this was the fastest growth in six months. January capacity (available seat kilometers or ASKs) rose 6.4 per cent, and load factor inched up 0.1 percentage point to 79.6 per cent. “2019 has started on a positive note, with healthy passenger demand in line with the 10-year trend line. However, market signals are mixed, with indications of weakening business confidence in developed economies and a more nuanced picture across the developing world,” IATA’s Director General and CEO, Alexandre de Juniac said. International passenger demand rose 6.0 per cent in January compared to the same month last year, which was up from a 5.3 per cent rise in December year-over-year. All regions recorded growth, led by Europe for a fourth consecutive month. Capacity increased 5.8 per cent and load factor climbed 0.2 percentage point to 79.8 per cent. European carriers’ international traffic climbed 7.7 per cent in January compared to the year-ago period, down from an 8.6 per cent annual increase in December. This moderation reflected uncertainty over the region’s economic situation, including lack of clarity over Brexit. Capacity rose 8.8 per cent and load factor fell 0.9 percentage point to 80.3 per cent. Asia-Pacific carriers recorded a demand increase of 7.1 per cent compared to January 2018, solidly above the 5.0 per cent growth in December. Capacity also rose by 5.1 per cent, and load factor surged 1.5 percentage points to 81.7 per cent, second highest among the regions. Healthy regional growth is being underpinned by rising incomes and an increase in the number of airport pairs.

Gol said travelers booked onto flights using the 737 MAX 6 aircraft would be transferred onto other flights, perhaps even on different airlines. The company said the model’s flight record had so far shown 2,933 journeys since its introduction in June 2018 “with total security and efficiency.” Gol stated its “confidence in its operations and in Boeing” and said it was doing everything possible to allow it to resume the grounded flights as soon as it could. Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash was the second one in six months involving the 737 Max 8 model following the death of 189 people in Indonesia in October. China was amongst a number of countries to ground all 737 MAX 8 craft on Monday, while US federal aviation authorities said they would order Boeing to modify the model.

Air Senegal receives Africa’s first A330neo Air Senegal has received its first A330-900 aircraft from Airbus, becoming the first African airline to get the -900neo model. Airbus made the announcement on 8 March, saying the aircraft had been delivered at the manufacturer’s production line in Toulouse, France. The aircraft (named Casamance) is fitted with a three-class cabin comprising 32 Business class, 21 Premium Plus and 237 Economy class seats. Air Senegal plans to operate its first A330neo on its Dakar-Paris route and to further develop its medium and long-haul network. The A330-900neo originally flew from Toulouse to Dakar on 31 January as part of an event attended by president Macky Sall. The Rolls Royce Trent 7000-powered aircraft then returned to France ahead of its official delivery in March. Air Senegal was launched in 2016 and began operations in 2018 with A319-100s and ATR 72-600s. It has two A330neos on order. Airbus said the A330neo features A350 XWB technology, giving lower fuel burn than previous models. The carrier flies to nine destinations in eight countries.
