Air Peace Blames Aviation Politics For Inability To Commence Flights On International Routes Air Peace had, earlier in 2017, acquired a Boeing B777 aircraft in anticipation of the commencement of its international routes. However, nine months after the acquisition, the airline was yet to commence flights to any of the routes. In what appeared to be a response to the criticism against its operations by the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, Air Peace has blamed aviation politics for its inability to commence designated international routes. At the fifth stakeholders’ forum held in Abuja last Thursday, Sirika had taunted Air Peace for its inability to begin flying designated international routes and wondered why an airline would acquire aircraft for international operations without using them. Sirika had insisted that the Fly Nigeria Act may not work until the country’s carriers put their acts together. Air Peace had, earlier in 2017, acquired a Boeing B777 aircraft in anticipation of the commencement of its international routes. However, nine months after the acquisition, the airline is yet to commence flights to any of the routes. Also, a few months ago, Air Peace announced the acquisition of another B777 aircraft, bringing the total number of Boeing 777 in its fleet to two. On the acquisition and non-deployment of the two airliners, stakeholders at various forums had said it was a bad business plan for the airline, saying that either flown or not, some rotables in the aircraft would require change. In a statement on Sunday, Chris Iwarah, spokesman of the airline, faulted the minister and attributed its inability to commence the routes to aviation politics. The Federal Government had deployed Air Peace to London, Guangzhou-China, Houston, Mumbai, Johannesburg, Dubai and Sharjah over three years ago, but the airline was yet to operate into any of the long-haul routes.

Iwarah quoted the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the airline, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olajide, as saying that the authorities of most of the international destinations the carrier had been designated to operate, were either "deliberately foot-dragging in processing its application or imposing frustrating conditions to discourage it from flying into their domains". Some of the destination countries, she said, responded to the airline’s application only after about two years. According to her, where the destination countries reluctantly approved the airline’s application to fly into their domains, "their authorities imposed impossible charges on it to frustrate and discourage it from acting on such approval". The high charges imposed on Nigerian airlines by other nations, she said, were unfortunately not responded to back home, regretting that the foreign airlines were "rather pampered" in Nigeria and given approval to operate to multiple destinations. She dismissed the claims that domestic airlines lacked the capacity to take advantage of the Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASA) Nigeria signed with different countries. In demonstration of its capacity, she said Air Peace was at the moment consistently operating into 14 domestic and five regional destinations, including Accra, Banjul, Dakar, Freetown and Monrovia. Olajide maintained that Air Peace had capacity to operate into all destinations approved for it, announcing that the airline was concluding arrangements to launch its Dubai and Sharjah services before the end of the year. In apparent response to the claim that some foreign airlines operating in Nigeria had offered 20 pilots jobs, the Air Peace COO said the carrier had, so far, directly offered jobs to more than 3,000 Nigerians, besides impacting the nation’s economy in many other respects.

She also identified the inability of airlines to operate in most of the nation’s airports once it was sunset as a great disservice to the operational capacity of the carriers. Speaking on the suspended national carrier project, which Air Peace had criticised as being out of fashion and a drain on public resources, Olajide wondered whether it would be fair for the Federal Government to confer the planned airline with advantages not available to the existing private carriers.

www.stabroeknews.com Civil aviation says satisfied with airport response to crash landing

Even as it continues a detailed probe into last Friday’s Fly Jamaica crash landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Guyana’s Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) says it is satisfied with the airport’s emergency response. “The agency is satisfied with the emergency response of the airport. In situations which do not happen regularly, like accidents, there may be a few glitches here and there but we are satisfied with the response,” Head of the GCAA, Egbert Field told Stabroek News yesterday. On Friday at 2.21 am, the pilot and co-pilot, both of whom are Jamaican, indicated that there were some hydraulic problems and requested permission to return to the Timehri airport. Permission was granted and after spending an estimated 43 minutes in the air they were able to land the plane…..

Aviation: Drunk Air India pilot caught just ahead of flying plane; man is responsible for flight safety

Kathpalia failed two breathalyzer tests on Sunday and was declared unfit to fly, according to a pre-flight medical examination report for alcohol, posted on the website of news portal India Today. A senior pilot who is also director of operations for Air India, and has had responsibility for flight safety and training, said he was told by the carrier he failed two breathalyzer tests on Sunday before a flight to London from New Delhi. It is the second time Arvind Kathpalia, who is also on the lossmaking airline`s board, has been in trouble over alcohol tests. He was suspended for three months in 2017 for allegedly refusing to take breathalyzer tests. Kathpalia told Reuters in an interview by phone that he would contest the results and claimed they were related to internal feuding within the state-owned company. According to a description for the operation director`s job when Kathpalia got appointed in June 2017, he is responsible for flight operations, ground operations, and flight safety and training operations. It is unclear if those remain the job specifications. Air India declined to comment for this article.

"It was 1:30 in the afternoon, only a bloody stark raving alcoholic is bloody drunk at 1:30 in the afternoon," Kathpalia said. "I am going to contest this." He said that at Air India "everyone is fighting with everyone," and that he has been targeted. flight between Bengaluru and New Delhi and back in January 2017, according to a court document available on law portal Indiakanoon. In August last year, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association, a trade union representing pilots of the state-owned carrier, filed a court case against Kathpalia requesting stern action against him over the missed breathalyzer tests and some other behavior. Calls made to union representatives late on Sunday were not answered. Kathpalia was executive director of flight operations during the earlier incident. When he was promoted to operations director it was contested by the union in its petition to the court. The court ordered the New Delhi police to file a first information report (FIR), the first step in India`s legal system that can lead to an investigation, against Kathpalia in August this year, according to reports in major Indian newspapers. New Delhi police officials could not immediately confirm the status of the case. The 2017 allegation "was a complete set-up," said Kathpalia, who said it was the result of a scheduling issue rather than his refusal to take tests. He claims that he is under attack partly because he is an employee of the original Air India, which was India`s international carrier, while the union is from the erstwhile Indian Airlines, which was a domestic carrier. The two airlines were merged into one in 2007. "There is a lot of animosity after the merger. The animosity exists till today. They refuse to acknowledge each other," said Kathpalia.

Airlines to be ordered to follow Boeing safety advice after Lion Air tragedy

Fatal Lion Air crash of 737 Max off Indonesian coast spurs Federal Aviation Authority to enforce bulletin directive on how to handle false cockpit readings US aviation regulators plan to order airlines to follow Boeing’s advisory on how pilots should handle false readings from a plane sensor that authorities linked to last week’s deadly 737 Max jet crash off the coast of Indonesia. The Boeing bulletin combined with statements by Indonesian investigators suggest that the pilots on the Lion Air 737 Max 8 were battling the plane as its computers commanded a steep dive. The issue is easily solved - Boeing’s notice said crews should follow an existing procedure to combat it - but can be difficult to address if pilots become confused. The so called angle-of-attack sensor failed on Lion Air Flight 610 and had been replaced the previous day after earlier faults, the Indonesia National Transportation Safety Committee said in a briefing. The malfunction can cause the plane’s computers to erroneously register an aerodynamic stall, causing the aircraft to abruptly dive to regain the airspeed it needs to keep flying.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

www.thenational.ae

2

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) last week said it would issue an airworthiness directive on the issue and “will take further appropriate actions depending on the results of the investigation”. The FAA also notified regulatory counterparts around the world, which typically follow the US agency’s lead on safety matters. The Boeing bulletin only reminds operators of the plane to follow existing procedures and doesn’t require any physical fixes that could disrupt service. It’s still possible the FAA may order the Chicago-based plane maker to redesign the Max’s flight computers in the wake of the October 29 accident, which left 189 people dead. The Lion Air jetliner plunged into the Java Sea minutes after takeoff from Jakarta airport, nosing downward so suddenly that it may have hit speeds of 950kph before slamming into the water, Bloomberg said. Moments earlier, the pilots radioed a request to return to Jakarta to land, but never turned back toward the airport, according to Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee and flight-tracking data. The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication. Boeing said it is cooperating fully and providing technical assistance as the investigation continues. Indonesia authorities said on Saturday they had stopped the search for victims of the crash but would keep looking for the Lion Air flight's second black box, the cockpit voice recorder. "There is nowhere left to search and we have stopped finding victims' bodies," Muhammad Syaugi, the head of the national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) told Reuters. "We will limit our operations to monitoring." Authorities have downloaded data from one of the black boxes found last week, the flight data recorder, but are still looking for the cockpit voice recorder.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

www.thenational.ae

3

Soearjanto Tjahjono, the head of the transportation safety committee (KNKT), said finding the voice recorder would be critical to understanding the cause of the crash. "From the black box data, we know about 70 to 80 per cent of what happened but to 100 per cent understand the cause of the accident ... we need be able to know the conversation that took place in the plane's cockpit," he said, declining to elaborate on what the flight data recorder had revealed. He said authorities were searching for 15 aircraft parts, including an "angle of attack" sensor on the aircraft, which helps the plane's computers understand if the aircraft is stable. Investigators have said one of these sensors had provided erroneous data. An wrong angle-of-attack reading while pilots are flying manually can cause the plane’s flight computers to command the Max models to dive, Boeing said in the bulletin to airlines. While planes like the Max fly mostly on autopilot, pilots can fly manually if they’re dealing with unusual situations like the malfunctions that occurred on the Lion Air flight. Pilots can override the nose-down movement by pushing a switch on their control yoke, but the plane’s computers will resume trying to dive as soon as they release the switch, the manufacturer said.

Here's the Brilliant Thing Delta Air Lines Says It Will Do to Reduce Winter Flight Delays. It's So Simple. Why Doesn't Every Airline Do It?

Sometimes you hear an obvious solution to a big problem. And you wonder, why doesn't everyone do that? Case in point: Delta Air Lines, which just announced a simple measure during the upcoming winter season to reduce weather-related delays and cancelations. They can't change bad weather, obviously. But if they can pull this off, it could make it easier to ensure that they have enough Delta employees on hand during winter storms to de-ice planes and make them safe for takeoff. And that should reduce flight delays and cancelations. Only, they had to figure out how to solve one little practical problem first. Calling the 'Go Teams' This whole thing comes out of an announcement Delta made a little after 5 p.m. on Friday. (Strange timing, by the way.) The airline wants to focus attention on its new de-icing tools, training and resources. They talked about flying "Go Teams" of 124 trained ground crew into cities 48 hours in advance of forecasted bad weather, so they'll know they have the maximum number of de-icing specialists available.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

www.inc.com

2

They figure they can cut 10 percent off the time it takes to de-ice an airplane with a Go Team on the ground. Multiply that by hundreds or even thousands of takeoffs and it adds up. But there's a simple, basic, almost boring challenge: Like, where do all these people sleep on short notice, especially if they're coming into an airport when other flights are getting delayed or canceled, and passengers are getting stranded. What if there aren't any hotel rooms available? I love imagine a Delta manager trying to figure out this problem, and an intern or other employee blurting out the obvious solution: "Well, couldn't they just sleep on the planes?"

'Spare wide body aircraft' Delta says they'll do the normal things to try to find places for these crews to sleep, like blocking out hotel rooms. But then they also came up with this crazy-brilliant idea:

"Delta also plans to utilize spare wide body aircraft equipped with Delta One business class lie-flat seats for employee accommodations onsite if needed." I'm not sure exactly how an airline decides it has "spare" widebody jets lying around, but I guess the assumption is that if there are delays and cancelations, they might wind up with some of these big jets stranded anyway. Credit to Darren Murph at The Points Guy, for noticing that line in Delta's press release. Doing this makes a lot of sense, so much so that I've started wondering why other airlines don't make planes available as a last resort during cancelations when there aren't hotel rooms available. It happens. And you might not love the idea of sleeping on a grounded plane--but it's probably better than sleeping on the floor of an airport terminal. By the way, the Go Teams are apparently all-volunteers. So, if they don't like the idea of staying overnight in Business Class on the ground, they can opt out.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

www.inc.com

3

Creativity and simplicity I've written before about some of the simple, innovative things Delta does to turn planed around faster--like backing planes away from the terminal at a 45 degree angle instead of a 90degree angle, which can save a minute or so on each of thousands of flights each day. Now, I'm calling out Delta here again, largely because they're smart enough to announce that they're doing small but creative things like this. Sometimes other airlines don't think to do them--and certainly not to take the time to get the word out. And honestly, it's the fact that they're thinking about doing this in order to get enough employees on the ground that matters more right now than actually doing it. We're not in winter yet; the issue hasn't come up to my knowledge. But even if they never even wind up having to implement this plan during the 2018-2019 winter season, it's nice to hear that they're thinking this way. And maybe that will give you just a bit more faith that they'll work a little harder to keep flights from being delayed. Winter's hard enough without a late or canceled flight that could have been prevented.
