1 edition.cnn.com Vaping co-pilot caused Air China plane to plummet, officials say

A co-pilot smoking an electronic cigarette in the cockpit of an Air China flight caused the plane to suddenly drop 6,000 meters (19,600 feet) when he mistakenly turned off its air conditioning system. A senior official from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) told reporters Friday that, without notifying the pilot, the unnamed co-pilot was trying to turn off air recycling fans to prevent the vapor from spreading into the passenger cabin. Instead, he toggled the wrong switches, which were close to his intended target, leading to a drop in oxygen levels that triggered altitude warnings. Qiao Yibin, the CAAC official, promised to hand down "severe punishment in accordance with laws and regulations," if the regulator's final conclusion on the incident matches its initial finding. Air China fired the entire flight deck crew and suggested CAAC revoke their pilot's licenses upon completing its investigation, the country's flag carrier said Friday night in a statement.

2 edition.cnn.com Air China flight CA106, en route from Hong Kong to the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, descended from above 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) to below 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) in less than nine minutes Tuesday shortly after it reached cruising altitude, according to phone GPS data shared with CNN by a passenger on board. The Boeing 737 jetliner was carrying 153 passengers and nine crew members on the three-hour journey and landed safely in Dalian, CAAC said Thursday. Citing anonymous industry sources, multiple Chinese state media outlets had reported earlier that, after the abrupt drop in altitude, the plane eventually climbed back to around 7,500 meters (24,600 feet) and flew to its destination with a less-than-adequate oxygen level in the cabin. Passengers were required to wear oxygen masks after a loss of cabin pressure caused the plane to drop in the sky. Rapid loss of cabin pressurization can be deadly. In 2005, a Helios Airways flight from Cyprus to Greece crashed into hills outside Athens, killing all 121 people on board. A loss of cabin pressurization had incapacitated the crew, leaving the Boeing 737 flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel. In a video of Flight CA106 obtained by the Beijing News, a flight attendant is seen walking down the aisle to check on passengers, some of who are putting on oxygen masks in response to a pre-recorded announcement in Chinese and English asking them to do so.

3 edition.cnn.com

Passengers were asked to use oxygen masks after the cabin environment reached less-than-adequate levels of oxygen. Hoby Sun, the passenger who provided CNN with the flight altitude data, said everyone was calm when the oxygen masks dropped. "I didn't think too much of it at the time -- we didn't know what was going on, nor did the flight attendants it seemed," he told CNN on Thursday. "I'm not physically hurt, but the psychological impact lingers. When I close my eyes, I see the oxygen masks dangling in front of me," Sun added. Air China, headquartered in Beijing and a member of the Star Alliance global network, has a fleet of more than 600 planes. Last year, the airline and its subsidiaries carried 102 million passengers across six continents, according to company statistics. Its last and only fatal accident was in 2002 when a Boeing 767 jetliner crashed into a hill in bad weather near Busan, South Korea, killing 129 of the 166 people on board.

www.flightglobal.com British Airways 777 diverts to Singapore after engine failure A Boeing 777-300ER operated by British Airways suffered an engine failure immediately after taking off from Singapore, requiring it to dump fuel and make a single-engine landing. As the aircraft, registration G-STBE, climbed over Malaysia on flight BA16 to London Heathrow, passengers felt a moment of shuddering. FlightGlobal was aboard the aircraft. The captain presently announced that the right engine had “failed” and that the aircraft would return to Singapore after dumping fuel. Upon landing, the aircraft taxied off the runway, where fire service crews inspected the engine. Afterwards the aircraft taxied back to the gate, and the passengers were disembarked. The aircraft (MSN 38696) was delivered to British Airways in 2011, Flight Fleets Analyzer shows. It had 3,540 cycles as of May. The 777 is powered by two General Electric GE90 115BL engines

Airbus has today delivered the first A321neo ACF (Airbus Cabin Flex) to Turkish Airlines. The aircraft features a single pair of doors forward of the wing, four newly introduced over-wing exits, and repositioned doors aft of the wing, which can be deactivated. A pair of standard doors is located at the rear of the cabin.

Get all the coverage from the Farnborough air show on our dedicated event page While the original A321 had been limited to 220 passengers, the new configuration can accommodate up to 240 seats in a single-class layout, in combination with a space-saving aft galley Airbus says that Turkish has fitted the aircraft with 20 business- and 162 economy-class seats The Cabin Flex layout is an option today, but is set to become standard on the A321neo “around 2020”, Airbus adds. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that Turkish has ordered 92 A321neo ACFs, which will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofans. The first aircraft was delivered from Airbus's German assembly line in Hamburg, the airframer notes.

www.flightglobal.com Shenzhen Airlines receives first A320neo aircraft

Shenzhen Airlines received its first Airbus A320neo aircraft this month. In response to FlightGlobal's query, Airbus says the aircraft registered B-300N was delivered on 6 July. It did not specify how many A320neos the carrier has on order. However, a statement by Pratt & Whitney indicates that Shenzhen Airlines has 26 additional PW1100G-powered A320neos on order. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that B-300N is owned and managed by the carrier. Shenzhen Airlines is also scheduled to receive two more A320neos in the coming months, identified as MSNs 8351 and 8373.

India's TruJet to wet-lease ATR turboprops for growth TruJet (TRJ, Hyderabad Int'l) Chief Financial Officer, KG Vishwanath says the Indian regional specialist will wet-lease seven additional ATR turboprops by March 2019. TruJet currently operates three ATR72-500s and two -600s on scheduled flights to 14 cities across India's central and southern regions. Speaking to The Hindu newspaper, Vishwanath said the use of wet-lease aircraft would allow TruJet to more rapidly expand its network. He did not specify from whom the aircraft, presumed ATR72s, would be leased but TruJet has been linked to talks with Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) over its use of their unwanted Avions de Transport Régional fleet. Chief executive Vishok Mansingh added that the extra capacity would allow TruJet to add 20 new destinations as a part of the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. “Over the last three years we have established operations and are now looking to expand to new destinations as a part of the Government's efforts to provide regional connectivity to tier II and tier III cities,” he said. “We expect to add these cities in the Western and Eastern region of the country under the scheme which is designed to provide air connectivity to locations where there are no flights." Among the new services to be launched include Ahmedabad to each of Kandla, Porbandar, Keshod, Jaisalmer, Jalgaon, and Nashik, and Guwahati to Burnpur, Cooch Behar, Tezu, and Rupsi

www.ch-aviation.com Nigeria's MaxAir begins scheduled pax ops MaxAir (Nigeria) (VM, Katsina) has commenced scheduled passenger services as of Thursday, July 12. An airline statement said it would offer multiple daily flights from its Kano base to each of Abuja and Lagos using its fleet of three exSouthwest Airlines B737-300s. Airline Vice Chairman/CEO, Alhaji Bashir Mangal, said MaxAir would role out service to other cities across Nigeria, such as Sokoto, Yola, Port Harcourt Omagwa, and Maiduguri in the near future. Aside from these scheduled flights, MaxAir also operated Hajj charter flights from Kano to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, last month using one of its three B747-400s. According to Mangal, MaxAir is also looking at using the B747s to open up regular longhaul flights to China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

www.ch-aviation.com EC greenlights Ryanair/LaudaMotion deal The European Commission says it has unconditionally approved Ryanair's proposed acquisition of Austrian carrier LaudaMotion (OE, Vienna) after an investigation revealed no anticompetitive concerns. Ryanair announced in March that it would acquire a 75% controlling stake in LaudaMotion for EUR50 million (USD62 million). Under the proposal, it would initially buy 24.9% of the Austrian regional carrier before increasing that to 75% subject to EU competition approval. Ryanair also has the option of acquiring the outstanding shares in 2022. The EC said in a statement that its review of the purchase had focussed on the routes from German, Austrian and Swiss airports to leisure destinations in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, where Ryanair and LaudaMotion's network's overlap. It also looked at whether LaudaMotion's portfolio of airport slots to be acquired by Ryanair at different airports would allow the Irish LCC to prevent competitors from entering or expanding their presence at these airports. However, in its conclusion, the EC said the increase in Ryanair's slot portfolio would be unlikely to have a negative effect on passengers. In addition, Ryanair will continue to face strong competition from other carriers on the routes to and from airports where its operations overlap with that of LaudaMotion, the bloc said. LaudaMotion is the company through which namesake founder Niki Lauda re-acquired the assets of Niki, an Austrian leisure carrier that he founded in 2003 but which was then sold to the now-defunct Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel). Lauda was able to regain control of Niki's assets after Lufthansa Group declined to acquire the airline thereby forcing it to file for bankruptcy. It currently operates a fleet of five A320-200s, five A321-200s, and nine B737-800s (all wet-leased from Ryanair) on flights to 43 destinations in each of Austria, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, and Croatia

www.ch-aviation.com Air Botswana orders two ATR72-600s

Air Botswana (BP, Gaborone) has signed a firm order agreement with Avions de Transport Régional (Toulouse Blagnac) for two ATR72-600s. According to the Franco-Italian manufacturer, the turboprops will be equipped with the latest navigation aids and will also feature a 70-seat, dual-class cabin. Air Botswana currently operates a fleet of three ATR42-500s and one ATR72-500 on scheduled passenger flights connecting its Gaborone hub with Francistown, Maun, and Kasane domestically as well as Johannesburg O.R. Tambo in neighbouring South Africa. With the arrival of the new ATR72-600s during the final quarter of this year, so Air Botswana will begin retiring its older aircraft. In March, then Minister for Transport and Communications, Kitso Mokaila, confirmed the acquisition of a 70-seat jet from Embraer.

www.ch-aviation.com Thai Airways Int'l to order 23 jets in 2018 - Minister Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) is likely to place orders for a total of 23 jet aircraft by the end of 2018, including 13 widebodies and 10 narrowbodies, Thai Minister of Transport Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has said. The order is subject to governmental approval, expected this year. The new aircraft will come as a replacement for the current fleet of Thai Airways and its regional subsidiary, Thai Smile (WE, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi). According to the ch-aviation fleets module, the Thai flag carrier currently operates a nearly exclusively widebody fleet consisting of fifteen A330-300s, twelve A350-900s, six A380800s, eight B747-400s, six B777-200s, six B777-200(ER)s, six B777-300s, fourteen B777-300(ER)s, six B787-8s, and two B7879s. Its sole narrowbody jet, a B737-400, is due to be retired later this year. For its part, Thai Smile operates twenty A320-200s. According to Reuters, Termpittayapaisith told a press conference that the new order would likely include A320neo for Thai Smile and any of A330-800s, A330-900s, A350s, B787-9s, or B777Xs for the mainline carrier. Thai Airways has been undergoing restructuring over the last few years as the government, which directly owns 51% of the airline's stock, seeks to return it to profitability. In 2017, Thai posted a THB2.1 billion baht (USD62.3 million) net loss. Last year, Thai reduced its shareholding in local low-cost carrier Nok Air (DD, Bangkok Don Mueang) to 21.8% but has since sought to increase cooperation between the LCC, Thai Smile, and its mainline unit. Thai is also in the process of disposing of its mothballed fleet of three A340-500s and six A340-600s, currently stored at Bangkok Don Mueang and Utapao respectively

www.ch-aviation.com SACAA reinstates South African Express's AMO South African Express (XZ, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) says the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has approved its Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) as it gradually progresses towards a resumption of flight operations. The state-owned carrier was forced to suspend flight operations in late May after SACAA revoked its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC), airworthiness certificates for nine of its twenty-one aircraft, and its AMO accreditations. At the time, the regulator said it had undertaken the move after an audit had uncovered seventeen (17) findings, of which five (5) were categorised as Level 1 findings. In an update issued on July 12, South African Express said that aside from accepting its CAPs, SACAA had reinstated its AMO accreditation on Friday, June 22. While it is currently undergoing recertification, SA Express's aircraft are also being scrutinized for airworthiness. "The airline's recovery remains top of mind and it is in this vein, that we have established a team, which has been dedicated to the CAPs and their implementation, and a second team that is focused on the recovery of the airline," it said. "These endeavours are being led by our newly appointed Board of Directors, the Ministerial Intervention Team and competent, dedicated SA Express employees." The statement made no mention of whether the South African government had formally agreed to recapitalize the carrier, among the most pressing of the Level 1 findings
