Qantas Is Flying From Sydney To Melbourne With A Turboprop byAndrew Curran Normally it is one of the busiest routes in the world. On your average day, you might see 70 plus flights operating each way between Sydney and Melbourne. But yesterday, Saturday, 11 April, things were decidedly sleepy. Virgin Australia had no flights. Tigerair is not flying. Jetstar had a single service down to Melbourne. Qantas, the big daddy of Australian aviation, had just one flight to Melbourne. That flight was on a turboprop and it went via Canberra.

a 74 seat QantasLink Q400 trundled down to Melbourne via Canberra. It took nearly three hours. In the evening, Qantas’ low-cost subsidiary Jetstar flew an A320 down to Melbourne. This later flight went direct. If you think that’s an anaemic schedule, the pickings will be slimmer next week. Disregarding a smattering of government underwritten international services, freight flights, and FIFO mining operations, Qantas and Virgin Australia have all but shut down. Across its entire domestic network, Virgin Australia is only operating one service – a six day a week return service between Sydney and Melbourne. Twenty four hours prior, seats remain available on tomorrow’s flights. Tigerair, Virgin’s low-cost subsidiary has suspended all operations. Qantas is keeping a Q400 aircraft in its operating fleet. Photo: Qantas News Room.Next week, Qantas will have a single daily Boeing 737 return service between Sydney and Melbourne. In addition, on Monday, Friday, and Sunday there is a Q400 service via Canberra. Jetstar has a single service on Saturday.

It is a sad state of affairs on a route that is the financial lifeblood of both airlines. This route earns Qantas more than USD$630 million annually in revenue. Add in Virgin Australia’s take and the route between Sydney and Melbourne is a billion dollar revenue stream that’s vanished. In a statement last week, Qantas told Simple Flying that some flights were only operating with a handful of passengers. The airline said that wasn’t sustainable. Qantas winding down domestic operations to three aircraft Last week, Qantas held an online staff briefing. Executive Traveller reported on comments made by Qantas bosses during that briefing. Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce, told staff the airline’s domestic operations will be reduced to just three aircraft in coming days – and one of those will be a Q400 turboprop. Qantas wants to maintain flights between the regions and cities. But the airline is walking a fine line, trying to maintain connectivity but also conserve cash. Qantas says it will also keep cutting services if needs be. The biggest impact is felt in remote regions As domestic flights evaporate, the real impact is being felt in

areas far from Australia’s populated south east corner. Next week, there are two flights next week between Perth and Sydney and just one flight to Melbourne. There is a single service out of Darwin to Sydney next week. In Cairns, there is one flight to Brisbane. And these are the big centers. Other smaller places, often thousands of kilometers from their closest capital city, have lost their air connections altogether. Regional airports have closed their doors. High profile closures (albeit not remote) include Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast Airports. Flying under the radar is the temporary closure of Alice Springs Airport. Some regional airports, like Alice Springs, have temporarily closed. Photo: Andy Mitchell via Wikimedia Commons.Essential workers, notably FIFO doctors and medical staff, are having difficulties returning to their hospitals and clinics. Weekend media is reporting on one man, a remote area school teacher now stranded in Darwin after his flight south was cancelled. He’s rented a car to make the 3,200 kilometer drive home to south east Queensland. While Qantas wants to conserve cash, the Australian

government is increasingly aware of travellers being stranded and the consequent knock-on effects. It is now emerging that the government is looking at subsidizing a minimum amount of domestic flights. People say everything will eventually get back to normal. Maybe. But I think it will be quite some time before the skies between Sydney and Melbourne are criss-crossed with contrails once again. As for services to more the far-flung destinations, there might be some very long road trips before they get back to normal.

Lufthansa Plans Kuwait Repatriation Flight— Here Is What It Will Cost byChris Loh On March 13th, the country of Kuwait officially closed off its airspace to regularly-scheduled passenger flights in an attempt to protect its residents from the fast spread of COVID-19. It’s difficult to know how effective these measures were as the country’s infection rate has skyrocketed since. In the past month, we’ve only seen special repatriation flights by a handful of airlines. German carrier Lufthansa hopes to offer one of the next scheduled services. Lufthansa typically operates an Airbus A330 on its FrankfurtKuwait service

a special letter distributed to select embassies in Kuwait, Lufthansa had the following to say:

14

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫قطاع االمانة العامة بالشركة القابضة لمصر للطٌران‬

‫تابع‬

”Lufthansa German Airlines is planning a commercial flight on 16th April 2020 at 22:45 (subject to the approval of the Kuwaiti authorities, which is of course required) in order to provide further travel possibilities within the given restrictions due to the ongoing Corona-crisis. Announcements about this flight will be shared via the respective embassies and business councils.“ The letter goes on to share the prices and options for the special flight. Roughly three times more than “normal” Lufthansa lists four cities and the prices for each in economy, premium economy, and business. The four cities are Frankfurt, Chicago, Newark, and Toronto. Set out in Kuwaiti Dinar, the prices are outrageous once you convert them to a more common currency. Providing economy prices as examples we see the following: Advertisement: Frankfurt: 361KWD – US$1,160 Chicago: 580KWD – US$1,870 Newark: 523KWD – US$1,680 Toronto: 540KWD – US$1,736

15

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫قطاع االمانة العامة بالشركة القابضة لمصر للطٌران‬

‫تابع‬

It’s even worse considering these are all one-way flights, and of course, prices for premium economy and business go way up from here. For reference, we have seen round-trip flights from Amsterdam and Paris for as little as US$400. Is this fair? We must consider the fact that the number of passengers traveling will be far lower than normal and airlines have taken huge losses in the past month. It’s certainly difficult in these unprecedented times to know what is a ”fair“ price for a specially scheduled flight… Lufthansa has mostly been using its larger 747 for repatriation flights. Would this be the case for Kuwait?

Interested travelers are asked to contact Lufthansa’s customer service office in Dubai via phone or email to express interest. In the bottom portion of the document, Lufthansa says ”once we have reached a certain demand

threshold, all passengers who signed up. . . will be contacted by our service center.“ Therefore, it’s very possible that this flight will not actually go ahead. In fact, since this document was distributed, we have seen reports of Kuwait’s intentions to open up its airport to commercial flights once again. The intention behind this is to allow foreigners and expats the ability to leave. However, no concrete ruling or detailed announcements have yet been made by the government. Qatar Airways will operate services from Kuwait to Doha on a Boeing 777. Photo: Getty ImagesDespite official government news, there does seem to be progress. In fact, the Canadian embassy in Kuwait issued the following notice: ”Please note that starting on April 14 Qatar Airways will have two daily flights from Kuwait to Doha. Canadian citizens hoping to return to Canada should consider this option with the connecting flight to Montreal from Doha. Interested parties should book their flights directly on the Qatar Airways website, which should be functional shortly.“ We recently checked Qatar Airways’ site and low and behold, flights are available – at much lower prices too. For example,

on April 16th, Kuwait to Toronto via Doha is listed for as low as US$1,202. This is roughly 30% less. This is certainly a little more in-line with what we are used to seeing pre-COVID-19. Indeed, in light of this new development, it would be a miracle if Lufthansa was still able to gather enough passengers for its special April 16th flight. Kuwait Airways has been operating its fair share of special repatriation flights during Kuwait’s travel ban. Photo: Chris Loh/Simple Flying Conclusion It was shocking when we first found out that Australians seeking to return home from South America were forced to buy one-way economy tickets for $5,500 Australian dollars (US$3,400). But in this new aviation climate, we are all having to adjust our expectations of what a flight should cost. Still, these can be very tough pills to swallow. At times, they can seem even predatory. In fact, Qatar Airways had made attempts to arrange a special repatriation service to Montreal from Kuwait. Their asking price for a one-way ticket in economy: 790KWD – or US$2,540. Now that commercial flights are starting to resume, travelers can be grateful that they can leave the country without leaving all their money behind as well.

United Airlines Will Resume Additional International Flights In Ma byLaura Ash United Airlines is hopeful that it will be able to resume some long-haul direct services in less than a month’s time. The airline has opened up booking for three transatlantic flights to Europe and two additional nonstop flights to South America. This is quite a development considering that at the end of March, the airline temporarily suspended all long-haul international flights. United Airlines is looking to get some of its international direct flights back on track.

It wasn’t all that long ago that we reported that United Airlines was temporarily suspending its long-haul international routes. The motive had been to adhere to developments in

government regulations that made travel restrictions even tighter. At the end of March, it said in a statement:

”…we are closely monitoring demand as well as changes in state and local curfews and government restrictions across the U.S. and will adjust its schedule accordingly throughout the month.“ At that time, United closed the transatlantic flights that were still operating. This includeed the service between Cape Town in South Africa and Newark in the U.S. In addition, the American carrier made its final flight to Central and South America on 24th March. Its final international long-haul journey over the Pacific was on 25th March. However, fast forward a few seemingly long weeks and United is already getting itchy feet. It wants its services up and running, but its approach is a cautious one. Nevertheless, United Airlines is gently phasing in routes that are currently suspended. The airline hopes to fly over the Atlantic once again at the beginning of May and will also operate services to two South American cities. At present, United is looking to reinstate three European routes. On the 4th May, United Airlines will begin to fly between its hub Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and London

Heathrow (LHR) again. The route is listed on the United website as a red-eye flown by Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, flight number UA931. A 787 Dreamliner will begin flying passengers between the US and the UK

Additionally, the air carrier will also restart flights between Newark (EWR) and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) on the same day. The 4th of May will also see the return of flights to Frankfurt (FRA) from Washington (IAD). All of the above services will operate daily. However, United Airlines also sees the benefit of restarting routes to South America. On 5th May, a daily flight will depart Houston (IAH) for Bogota (BOG) in Colombia. On the same day, United will fly to Buenos Aires (EZE) from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. This service will only operate three times per week. These services complement

existing widebody routes to destinations including Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Sao Paulo. Advertisement: Many airlines have cut services throughout April but it was widely accepted that these schedules would change. At this point in time, there is still no concrete evidence as to whether airlines will be able to operate international flights in as little as a month’s time. However, it is possible. Is this strategy optimistic or naive? We contacted United Airlines to ascertain whether these long-haul flights would change subject to developments in COVID-19. It told us:

”While COVID-19 continues to severely impact international travel, we are adding back-in four additional routes to create more connectivity between our hubs and key business markets in Europe and South America where we’re seeing some passenger demand.“ We can presuppose that if the situation does not improve, the airline will be forced to shift back the start dates for these services. Is it too soon to be offering international long-haul flights considering the current state of the industry

Another question is: how popular will these services be? With the potential for such limited travel at the start of May, it’s difficult to think that these flights will be packed full of passengers. That said, those who are keen to move will likely take advantage of the services that United is offering. Whether or not this schedule is premature or not, no one can deny that United Airlines has the desire to get its fleet and passengers back in the air. It’s what most airlines are striving for and they are simply playing a waiting game to get back to normal service.

Germany started on 9th April. The German air carrier employed the services of one of its 747-400 aircraft. D-ABVP operated flight LH9880 which left Frankfurt on the 9th April at around 19:00 UTC. The 747, unable to complete the more than 20-hour flight in one go, stopped at Bangkok, arriving at 05:26 UTC the following day. After a brief stop of around an hour and a half, the aircraft left Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) on 10th April at 07:13 UTC. It arrived at Christchurch International Airport (CHC) at 17:59 on 10th April, according to FlightRadar24. Final 747 flight heads home from Christchurch At the time of writing, the 747 is one its way home. This is the last repatriation effort from the aircraftThe aircraft is currently completing the return flight to Frankfurt as flight number LH355. many additional ones in cooperation with respective governments.“ Lufthansa is urging German citizens to book repatriation flights through its online portal (www.rueckholprogramm.de) and with communication with German diplomats in the countries where citizens are stranded. Passengers will not need to make advance payments, according to Lufthansa, however ”those affected will have to bear a share of the costs stipulated in the consular law.“ Not the final repatriation flight Whilst the emotional tributes to the Lufthansa crew at Christchurch Airport made it seem as though the airline would never return, that’s not entirely true. Lufthansa has plans to repatriate even more Germans from New Zealand. D-AIMJ is also completing repatriations from New Zealand. Photo: Patrick Feller via

Bullets hitting aircraft in the past: Whilst this type of incident is very rare, bullets have hit passenger planes in the past. In January 2015 The Guardian reported that a flydubai Boeing 737 was hit with bullets at Bagdad Airport. After this, 3 airlines suspended flights to the Iraqi capital. Luckily, in this incident, no one was injured. flydubai operates an all-737 fleet. One passenger was killed, and 3 flight attendants injured. Apparently, one of the bullets narrowly missed the captain.

Etihad doubles down on airframe, cabin maintenance of parked fleet By Alfred Chua As it parks about 80% of its fleet amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, Etihad Airways has doubled down on aircraft and cabin maintenance work. In a video released on 10 April, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier states it has to date replaced more than 10,000 seat and backrest covers in its cabins. Etihad vice president for airframe services Haytham Nasir adds that the carrier is working closely with its fleet management team to see if maintenance checks on some aircraft can be brought forward. ”We are taking every opportunity during this time, including product improvement. We do this maintenance to the best standard…[the] best quality,“ he adds. Cirium fleets data indicates that the carrier has 12 passenger aircraft in operation, with another six Boeing 777 freighters operating. Etihad has parked 114 aircraft. The carrier will be using the bellyhold capacity on its Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft to fly to Melbourne, Chennai, Kerala, Karachi, as well as Amsterdam. This is over and on top of existing passenger freighter flights mounted to points such as Seoul, Singapore, Jakarta, Bangalore and Riyadh. ”The new routes will further ensure continuity of fresh imports to the UAE including meat, fish and seafood, fruits, and vegetables, in addition to pharmaceuticals and medical supplies,“ Etihad states. Etihad suspended all passenger services on 25 March, in line with travel restrictions imposed by the UAE government to minimise the spread of the coronavirus. It has since been operating a series of repatriation flights and bellyhold cargo flights. Both Etihad and compatriot Emirates have in early April, announced plans to resume a number of flights in its network. Emirates announced on 2 April that it was permitted to operated a limited schedule to five points in Europe, carrying only outbound passengers from the UAE. The carrier has parked its entire fleet of 115 Airbus A380s amid the outbreak, and more than 100 777-300ERs, operating only 39 aircraft,
