Financial indicators Airline shares fell 5% in August, by slightly less than the broader stock market Airline share prices fell 5% in August compared to July. The FTSE Global All Cap fell further, down 6% compared to July. Globally, markets were impacted by developments in the Chinese economy. China’s stock market experiencing its largest one-day fall in August since 2007 has increased concerns about further slowdown in the economy. Airlines in Asia Pacific were most impacted, with a fall of 15% in August compared to July. In the previous month, airline share prices rallied in response to a fall in fuel prices. Fuel costs Crude oil price prices weaken on expectations of supply increases in the US and Iran Crude oil prices fell below $50/bbl in January, the lowest price seen for the past 6 years. Since then, there have been two small rallies; the most recent was a 15% increase in May compared with the prior low in March. August saw further decline in oil prices, by 25% compared to July. Crude oil prices are now $47/bbl, or 58% down on the 2014 mid-year high. The recent weakness reflects expectations of supply increases from Iran and the US. In addition, the demand outlook has weakened with a slower than expected global economic growth, especially in key economies like China.

Demand RPK volumes increased in July as global FTK volumes continue to decline Air transport volumes picked-up in July, resuming the robust growth trend after a moderation in June. Weakness in some emerging markets, including China, has placed downward on RPK volumes. However, growth in air travel, particularly the more price sensitive economy class leisure travel, has been given a boost by lower fares. Air freight volumes fell by 0.4% in July compared to June, further entrenching the weakness that has been developing in 2015. Air freight performance is consistent with a trend change in world trade, particularly in emerging Asia, where trade has been in notable decline throughout much of H1 2015

http://www.iata.org/

Capacity ASKs continue to expand and AFTKs rise despite declines in demand volumes There was a slight 0.8% increase in passenger capacity in July compared to June; once again mostly on international markets. Carriers in all regions experienced capacity expansion, and on both international and domestic markets. Air freight capacity growth picked-up in July compared to June, expanding 0.6%. Aside from a moderation in May and June, the trend in AFTK growth has been strongly positive for much of 2015, in contrast to developments in demand volumes

Growth in seats continued in July, but at a slower rate than growth in demand Growth in available seats slowed slightly in July, but still expanded at a rate of 0.6% compared to June. There was a decrease in new aircraft deliveries to the operating fleet in July (121), compared to June (121). In addition, there were fewer (100) aircraft re-entering the fleet from storage compared to June (125). Growth in seats slowed to a 7% annualized rate in July, which is slower than the current growth in demand and should help sustain loads and aircraft utilization rates if it continues.

Passenger loads dipped slightly while air freight stabilized after recent declines ď ‘Industry load factors rebounded in July, after a few months of weakness. The increase in seasonally adjusted load factors resulted from a strong pick-up in volumes that outstripped growth in capacity. The pick-up in load factors was seen across both domestic and international markets. ď ‘Cargo load factors fell in July compared to June. The decline in volumes in July was met with a strong increase in capacity. Air freight load factors were pushed down even further in July, down to levels not seen since mid-2009, on a seasonally adjusted basis. Jet engine parts on Las Vegas runway indicate major failure LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jet engine parts found on the Las Vegas runway where a British Airways flight aborted takeoff as the engine burst into flames indicate a rare catastrophic failure, experts said Thursday as investigators released preliminary findings and began analyzing flight data and cockpit recordings. Early findings show the failure occurred where the engine was under the highest pressure, though there was no immediate indication of what caused it or the fire that forced 170 people to evacuate Tuesday at McCarran International Airport as smoke poured from the aircraft. You really don't see catastrophic or uncontained engine failure like this very often," said John Cox, an aviation safety consultant who spent 23 years as a U.S. Airways pilot. He said the failure indicates parts sliced through the engine casing. The National Transportation Safety Board said there was damage to the armored shell around the left engine's high-pressure compressor, and several 7- to 8-inch fragments of the compressor were found on the tarmac. No one was seriously injured when British Airways Flight 2276 screeched to a halt and the 157 passengers and 13 crew members escaped down evacuation slides as firefighters doused flames spewing from the engine beneath the wing of the Boeing 777. The pilot who halted the takeoff and calmly called "mayday, mayday" said he will retire one flight shy of the day he had planned to hang up his wings next week. Chris Henkey of Padworth, England, told NBC News he'd never had such a close call in a 42-year career, and he's "finished flying." He won't captain what was to be his final flight to Barbados, where he intended to vacation with his daughter. Investigators planned to interview Henkey and two senior first officers with 18 and 10 years of experience.

http://www.oanow.com/ Henkey, 63, was hailed by fire officials and airline observers for a flawless reaction and evacuation, though he deflected praise, saying the entire crew helped. The whole ordeal lasted about five minutes. Engine fires are unusual but not unheard-of. In July, a Southwest Airlines flight evacuated at Midway International Airport in Chicago when one engine caught fire on takeoff. In June 2006, an American Airlines jet engine exploded during testing at a maintenance area at Los Angeles International Airport, launching parts into the body of the plane and as far as half a mile away. No one was injured in either incident. Both jets had different engines than the British Airways plane. NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration investigators, along with teams from Boeing and engine manufacturer General Electric, were examining the aircraft before removing the damaged engine for a thorough analysis. The flight data and cockpit voice recorder "black boxes" and a quick access recorder arrived at an NTSB laboratory, said Eric Weiss, an agency spokesman. Investigators in Las Vegas were expected to look at fuel lines, maintenance records, engine history and other factors to pinpoint what sparked the blaze. Don Knutson, an aircraft accident investigator in Wichita, Kansas, said mechanical failure, parts fatigue or the ingestion of debris all could have created the failure. "Jet engines suck, squeeze, burn, turn and blow," he said. "That creates the energy to propel the jet forward. If something fails during intake, it could lead to compression failure. But that in itself may not cause a fire." The damaged components came from the engine core, which spins at ultra-high speeds adjacent to the engine combustion chamber. The NTSB statement didn't address possible causes of the fire, or whether a fuel line might have broken. Cox said a breach in the engine casing could have crippled the effectiveness of a chemical system to snuff out an engine fire in flight. "Halon breaks down the chemistry of the fire and smothers the fire," he said. "When you have an open system where the casing is not intact, halon can't do its job." Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said he also couldn't tell if a fire suppression system had been activated. British Airways said the plane arrived from London Gatwick on schedule at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday. The airline flies the route five times a week. The large plane with two GE90 engines was built in 1998 and was registered to British Airways a year later. By the end of 2013, it had flown 76,618 hours, according to the British Civil Aviation Authority. GE90 engines are used in most Boeing 777s. The airline said all passengers were offered flights to London on Wednesday and most had taken them. ___ Ho reported from Phoenix. Associated Press writer Brian Melley in Los Angeles contributed to this report. ___ This story has been corrected to show pilot Chris Henkey is from Padworth, England, not Padsworth.

http://www.thecairopost.com/ Luxor tourism rises after launch of German charter flights CAIRO: The number of tourists visiting archaeological sites in Luxor Friday soared to 1,120, marking a notable increase after German charter flights resumed operations to the historical city earlier this month. ―Some 434 tourists, out of the arrivals were Germans who arrived in Luxor airport Thursday onboard four charter flights from German airports of Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Schönefeld,‖ Director General of Upper Egypt Antiquities Department Mostafa Waziri told The Cairo Post Saturday. According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), Germany was the second largest market for tourism in Egypt after Russia in 2014. German tourists visiting the Red Sea resort cities in Egypt increased between 50-60 percent during the period between January and September 2014. Their number exceeded 1.2 million tourists in 2010. The governor of Luxor Mohammed Badr said that the return of German charter flights is ―a positive step to revive the ailing sector ahead of high season scheduled for October through April,‖ Youm7 reported Saturday. The number of German tourists visiting Egypt during the period between January and March 2015 increased by 17%, compared to the same period last year, Egyptian ambassador to Germany Mohamed Hegazy told stateowned MENA news agency.
