United Airlines flies 'Fantasy Flights' for sick kids to visit Santa United Airlines is making a lot of sick kids' holidays brighter by again sponsoring its "Fantasy Flights" program — including an event at Denver International Airport. This will be the 22nd year that the No. 1 carrier at DIA (NYSE: UAL) has been hosting "Fantasy Flights," where a United airplane flies seriously ill children and their families on a short flight, then the plane goes to a hangar or airport gate — a mock "North Pole" — where United employees throw the children a holiday party and kids can meet Santa Claus. Santa Claus and a helper wave to children taking a "Fantasy Flight" in 2013. UNITED AIRLINES PHOTO United held its "Fantasy Flights" at 11 airports around the world this year. The events in Denver and Washington Dulles airports are being held Saturday. FEATURED JOBS "This year, nearly 5,000 deserving children and their families will gather at 11 airport locations for what will be a memorable visit to the „North Pole.' All the holiday characters will be there including Santa Claushimself along with his elves, reindeer and a cast of holiday helpers," United said in a blog about the Fantasy Flights. "When I look into their eyes as they're chatting with Santa, it's often difficult to keep the tears from rolling down my face,” said Los Angeles International Airport Customer Service Representative David Tomb, in a statement. In the United statement, the airline said Fantasy Flights " are entirely volunteer-driven. United provides the aircraft and event location, while employees and retirees volunteer their time to raise money for gifts and fuel, bake cookies, prepare food, decorate gates and hangars, and even don holiday costumes. More than 1,500 employees volunteer annually.

Emirates says it plans to retire 26 aircraft next year Emirates Airline has announced it plans to retire 26 aircraft in 2016, including 12 A330-300s, 4 A340-300s, 1 A340-500, 6 Boeing 777200ERs, 2 Boeing 777-300s and 1 Boeing 777-300ER. The average age of the Emirates aircraft slated for retirement in 2016 will be 15.7 years, well-below the average industry retirement age of 25. In addition, 13 more aircraft will be retired in 2017 and another 13 will be retired in 2018, the airline said in a statement. Balancing its aircraft retirement programme, Emirates said it will take delivery of 36 new aircraft in 2016, including 20 A380s and 16 Boeing 777-300ERs. At the end of 2016, the aircraft retirements and new deliveries will put Emiratesâ€&#x; average fleet age at 5.6 years, dramatically younger than the global average. Sir Tim Clark, president Emirates Airline said: “We are fully committed to flying a modern fleet that is better for the environment, and provides our customers with a superior level of comfort and safety. "With the retirement of older aircraft and the introduction of new, more fuel efficient aircraft in 2016, Emirates will continue to lead the industry in reducing the age of our fleet, while at the same time defining new levels of service that our customers have come to expect." Currently, the total number of aircraft in the Emirates fleet stands at 244. In 2015, the airline received 26 new aircraft. The airline has 262 additional aircraft on order, worth over $120 billion at list prices.
