Egypt bans flights of Boeing B737 Max planes: Airport
Egypt‟s Civil Aviation Ministry on Wednesday has halted Boeing B737 MAX model airplanes from landing and taking off Egyptian airports on Wednesday, following the fatal crash on Sunday of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet that killed all 157 people on-board, including 6 Egyptians. This precautionary decision was taken “for the safety of passengers”, the Ministry wrote on social media. The ministry added that the decision was taken with a declaration of safety to all countries following the Ethiopian Airlines crash of the same model airplane, and because the cause has yet to be determined. The operational safety of the B737 model would be assessed with international civil aviation authorities, manufacturers of the plane and safety agencies, the Ministry stressed. Six Egyptians are among the 157 casualties after an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed en route to Nairobi, Kenya, from Addis Ababa the Ethiopian government said Sunday. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) announced that the plane contained 149 passengers and eight crew members from 33 countries. The Ethiopian Airlines stated that the Boeing 737-800 MAX took off at 08:38 am local time from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and lost contact at 08:44 am. The plane crashed near Bishoftu city, the airlines added, about 45 km southeast of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

1 Emirates to launch second daily flight to London Stansted
Emirates announced the launch of a second daily flight from Dubai (DXB) to London Stansted (STN) starting 1st July, 2019. The additional flight means that Emirates customers will now have 11 daily flight options to and from three London airports. As with the first, the second daily flight to Stansted will also be operated by Emirates‟ „game changing‟ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a three-class configuration with 6 private suites in First Class, 42 fully-flat beds in Business Class and 306 seats in Economy Class. 2 Beginning 1st July, the first daily flight from Dubai to London Stansted will operate as EK65, departing Dubai at 0900hrs and arriving in London Stansted at 1330hrs. The return flight, EK66 will depart London Stansted at 1500hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0105hrs the following day. The second daily flight from Dubai to London Stansted will operate as EK67, departing Dubai at 1415hrs and arriving in London Stansted at 1845hrs. The return flight, EK68 will depart London Stansted at 2110hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0710hrs the following day. The additional Dubai-Stansted flight will also double the daily cargo capacity offered by Emirates SkyCargo to a total of 40 tonnes each way, facilitating trade and benefitting local businesses. Emirates second daily flight to London Stansted brings Emirates‟ total weekly flights to the UK to 140 – six services a day from Heathrow, three daily from London Gatwick and Manchester, two daily from Birmingham, Glasgow and London Stansted, and a daily service from Newcastle and Edinburgh. 1 India's Jet Airways on the brink as Etihad board debates cash injection MUMBAI -- India's Jet Airways is seeking an emergency cash infusion from Etihad Airways after defaulting on repayment of external debt on Monday, leaving the future of the country's second-largest private airline in the balance. Jet Airways informed India's stock exchanges that the loan payment, which was due on March 11, "has been delayed owing to temporary liquidity constraints," but did not detail who the lender is or the size of the default. The default comes just days after Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal wrote an urgent letter to Etihad CEO Tony Douglas asking for an infusion of 7.5 billion rupees ($107 million) by the end of this week. Failure to do so, Goyal warned, will be "severely deleterious [for] the future of the airline, leading to its grounding." Jet Airways has been struggling under mountains of debt, mounting losses and other headwinds as fierce competition in India's aviation industry continues to push fare prices lower and squeeze margins. The company has currently grounded 50 out of its 119 aircraft. The letter to Etihad, dated March 8, included a draft of a 40 billion rupee rescue plan for the troubled carrier. The plan, which includes the emergency cash injection, has been approved by Jet Airways, Etihad and lenders. Final approval by Etihad's board is expected this week, though analysts say there may be some sticking points for the Abu Dhabi-based airline, particularly in relation to the Goyal family's future role in Jet Airways. The draft of the rescue plan was seen by the Nikkei Asian Review. According to the proposed plan, "lenders shall infuse 7.50 billion rupees into the company. Etihad will procure funding for the company, either itself, or from an offshore or onshore lender, for an amount equivalent to lender's financing, i.e., 7.50 billion rupees, as soon as reasonably possible." In addition, Jet Airways is proposing to pledge 15% of the total share capital of its loyalty program, Jet Privilege, to lender HSBC as security for a $150 million loan. Jet Airways holds a 50.1% stake in Jet Privilege.

2 Under the rescue plan, Etihad Airways will inject between 16 billion and 19 billion rupees worth of equity into Jet Airways, which would increase its share marginally to 24.9% from the current 24%, while lenders including State Bank of India will infuse 10 billion rupees for a 29.5% stake. A new investor will bring in another 16 billion to 19 billion rupees. That investor is yet to be identified, though it is widely believed that it will be the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, a government-owned wealth fund. These moves would bring the Goyal family's stake to 17%. Furthermore, Goyal, would step down as chairman of the board and be designated chairman emeritus, and his family's maximum stake would be capped at 22%. Etihad has made his removal as chairman a requirement for bailing out the Indian company, though Goyal has been fighting this. Ashish Nainan, an aviation analyst with the ratings agency CARE, believes that Etihad might have a problem with the founding family retaining a 17% stake, especially as its own stake would be less than that of the banks. "That's not really a comfort zone," Naina said. "It would leave scope for Goyal [to engage in] backdoor negotiations and to come back at a later point." The board structure being discussed -- with two nominees from Etihad and two from Jet Airways -- is likely another sticking point, he said. "Etihad would want more control than leaving anything to the existing shareholders. … They want to run the airline.“ Another point that might not sit well with Etihad is a proposal for Goyal's son Nivaan Goyal to be given an executive position at Jet Airways. The younger Goyal, who joined the company a decade ago, is currently the head of business at the company and was being groomed to become executive director. Nainan added, however, that should the deal fall through, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely ask banks to step in to help, as it does not want to let the airline fail ahead of important elections this year.

3 Jet Airway's request comes amid struggles at Etihad itself, which has been posting losses for the past two years and has reportedly laid off 2.5% of its 2,065 pilots. Its strategy of taking minority stakes in struggling airlines has also been put to the test. Two European airlines Etihad had invested in -Alitalia and Air Berlin -- have filed for bankruptcy protection. Still, approval of the rescue plan would give much-needed support for Jet Airways, its lessors, employees and lenders. The Indian carrier's debt stood at around 84.1 billion rupees as of last September, 30 billion rupees of which comes due at the end of March. Shareholders the debt-laden airline have already voted in favor of a takeover by a group of lenders and of a capital increase that would steady the company's finances as it seeks a return to earnings growth. Under a debt-forequity deal approved by the airline's board on Feb. 14, banks led by State Bank of India will take a 51% stake in the carrier. The debt-for-equity swap, which will entail an issue of 114 million new shares, is expected to fill a funding gap of around $1.2 billion, but the deal depends on Etihad board's approval. Jet Airways has been battling high fuel prices, a weakening rupee and intense competition that pushed down fares. Employees and aircraft leasing companies have gone unpaid for several months. The airline on Feb. 14 reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss -- 5.88 billion rupees for the October-December period. Like its peers, Jet Airways has also suffered from rising global oil prices and a depreciating rupee. In August, the carrier embarked on a plan to cut costs by 20 billion rupees over the next two years. Fresh equity infusion was part of the plan.

1 Nigeria‟s airline to keep Boeing 737 deal
Several countries have grounded all B-737-800MAX aircraft in its fleet following Sunday‟s crash of its Flight ET302. Nigeria‟s leading carrier Air Peace insists it has no plan to cancel its order for 10 737-MAX 800 planes in spite of the uproar against the brand over recent crashes. The airline Corporate Communications Manager, Mr Chris Iwarah, said any decision about cancelling the order would be premature. Mr Iwarah, however, said on Tuesday in Lagos that Air Peace would continue to act in the interest of the safety of the flying public. He said the multi-million dollar deal signed between Air Peace and the American aircraft manufacturer, The Boeing Company, on September 13, 2018 for the delivery of 10 brand new B737 MAX 800 aircraft, was still on. “At this moment, it is premature to begin to talk about things and conclusions that have not been put in the public domain. “Investigations into the crashes involving B737Max 800 are ongoing so it will not be fair at this time to begin to make definite comments on those issues,” he said. The Air Peace spokesperson said the airline had not yet taken delivery of the ordered aircraft, adding that before that time, issues surrounding its safety must have been identified by global aviation experts.

Other carriers, including China have grounded the B737 MAX 800 aircraft in their fleets due to safety concerns.

1 Etihad Airways, Saudia set to expand codeshare deal
Etihad Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines have announced plans to expand their codeshare agreement. Etihad Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines, better known as Saudia, have announced plans to expand their codeshare agreement following positive growth in traffic since their partnership began in November. Jointly, Etihad and Saudia said they have flown over 16,000 guests across the partnership. Tony Douglas, Group CEO, Etihad Aviation Group said: “With greater choice now available, more flexibility across both our schedules, and world-leading products and services, together, we now fly approximately 150 guests per day across each other‟s networks. Our plan is to grow this number considerably through expansion of the codeshare agreement in the coming months, and to deliver more benefits to our customers.” The codeshare agreement has seen „EY‟ and „SV‟ codes already placed on 14 routes with the addition of Vienna this week. In the coming months, Etihad will place its „EY‟ code on, Tunis, Sharm El Sheikh and Alexandria. At the same time, Saudia will place its „SV‟ code on Etihad flights to Tokyo, Nagoya, and Baku. Phase two for the „EY‟ code will include Algiers, Dhaka and Erbil while phase two for the „SV‟ code will include Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Moscow, Dusseldorf, Hong Kong, Kathmandu, Lagos, Minsk, Rabat, Astana, and more points in India.

By leveraging each of our networks, we are able to provide a wide array of choice and convenience that lends itself well for business and leisure travellers alike.” On average, Etihad carries approximately 1.3 million passengers a year to and from the kingdom while Etihad Cargo carried more than 23,200 tons of cargo between the two countries last year. In November, Jeddah became the first destination on the airline‟s network to be operated by Etihad‟s Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. Etihad today operates 84 flights per week to Saudi Arabia. 1 Boeing responds to growing number of B737 MAX groundings 12.03.2019 - 18:39 UTC Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) has said it will not issue any further guidance to operators of B737 MAX aircraft despite mass groundings of the type over the past two days. Both regulators and operators of the B737-8 and 9 have grounded their respective fleets given the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines B737 MAX 8, ET-AVJ (msn 62450), on Sunday, March 10, which killed all 158 passengers and crew onboard. The incident came just over four months after the crash of a Lion Air B737 MAX 8 which killed 189 onboard. Both accidents occurred shortly after take-off. As of 1900Z on Wednesday, March 13, multiple countries have grounded all B737 MAX operations until further notice and/or banned the type from accessing their respective airspaces. These include: The European Union including the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland (as per an EASA Airworthiness Directive effective 1900Z, March 12); China; Australia; Malaysia; Kuwait; Oman; The United Arab Emirates (UAE); Hong Kong; Equatorial Guinea; Kazakhstan; ... added to the list of carriers suspending operations.

Russian carrier S7 Airlines has opted to suspend operation of its Boeing 737 Max jets, apparently without a specific instruction from the country‟s civil aviation authority. The airline has two of the type, the only examples in Russia, operated by its Globus division. Federal air transport regulator Rosaviatsia issued a validated type certificate for the Max 8 on 17 September last year. Rosaviatsia‟s official repository shows that certificates of airworthiness were granted to the two Globus 737 Max 8s – which are both on the Bermuda registry – on 11 and 25 October. S7 Airlines says it chose to suspend operations with the aircraft from midnight on 13 March, until it receives more detailed information regarding the cause of the 10 March accident involving an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max. It insists the suspension “will not affect” the airline‟s schedules. Rosaviatsia had stated on 12 March that it was collating and assessing information on the Max situation but had not signalled that it was ordering a halt to flights with the type. Russian carrier Ural Airlines and Aeroflot Group‟s budget operator Pobeda have also selected the 737 Max for fleet modernisation, although neither has yet taken delivery.

Lufthansa Group is ordering 20 Boeing 787-9s and is also taking another 20 Airbus A350-900s to replace four-engined jets in its fleet. The carrier has also disclosed that it is to sell six of its Airbus A380s within the next four years. Lufthansa Group‟s supervisory board has approved the acquisition of the 40 twin-engined long-haul jets, which will include the first 787s for Lufthansa. The new aircraft, valued at $12 billion, will be delivered over the course of 2022-27. Lufthansa has also revealed that it will sell six of its 14 A380 jets back to Airbus. The airline says it “continuously monitors the profitability” of its route network and is cutting the A380 fleet to eight aircraft “for economic reasons”. “By replacing four-engined aircaft with new models, we are laying a sustainable foundation for our future in the long run,” says chief executive Carsten Spohr. The carrier, already a customer for the A350-900 and the 777-9, is yet to decide where the additional A350s and the 787s will be stationed. Lufthansa Group states: “The structure of the network and the long-haul fleet, fundamentally optimised according to strategic aspects, will give the company more flexibility and at the same time increase its efficiency and competitiveness.”
