kenya: Relief As Kenya Airways Resumes Flights to Juba Kenya Airways (KQ) resumed flights to Juba Thursday morning after a temporary ceasefire allowed relative calm in the war-torn nation. The flag carrier had late Wednesday said it would take advantage of the security stabilisation after five days of unrest to resume operations. "Kenya Airways will avail a larger capacity aircraft, B737-800, to accommodate more guests and clear the backlog that has been occasioned by the airline suspending flights from Sunday, July 10, following an eruption of unrest in the country," read a statement from KQ. The airline confirmed the departure of a Thursday morning flight to Juba. The airline will carry on with the usual two-daily flights to the South Sudan capital, one departing Nairobi at 0715hrs while the second one taking off at 1320hrs. KQ was forced to suspend flights to Juba on Sunday after a weekend of gunfight between soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir and those of First Vice-President Riek Machar. OVER 270 LIVES The Africa's youngest nation celebrated her fifth independence day in heavy gunfire said to have claimed more than 270 lives and displaced millions in the latest flare of violence. "To clear the backlog by Friday, July 15, the airline will give priority to guests based on their original return dates. Kenya Airways regrets any inconvenience caused during the suspension of flights and wishes to thank its guests for continued support," the airline wrote.

(2) Most Kenyan logistics firms had also suspended operations to South Sudan citing concerns over safety of their staff. Cargo carrier, Astral Aviation and Siginon were among those that called off services to monitor the situation, with the airport said to have caused a backlog of more than 100 tonnes in cargo. South Sudan reopened the Juba airport on Tuesday following the ceasefire and the resumption of KQ flights expected to be a big relief for stranded passengers. Congestion is expected at the airport as many who could not get the chattered flights allowed during the airport closure will be struggling to fly into safety before the vicious South Sudan turmoil settles completely

Ethiopian Airlines celebrates Airbus 350 XWB delivery by setting world record Ethiopian Airlines soared into the record books last month as 350 members of staff came together to set a new record for the Largest human image of an airplane. The attempt, which took place at Addis Ababa Airport was in celebration of the airline taking delivery of Africa’s first Airbus 350 XWB, marking an important milestone for the region’s aviation industry. Guinness World Records adjudicators were on hand to verify the record attempt which saw Ethiopian Airlines staff members form the wing span of an Airbus A350. With each participant carefully measured for arrangement and numeric accuracy, Ethiopian Airlines successfully organised enough of its employees in bright yellow uniforms to set the new benchmark for the title. The huge new aircraft which inspired the record has been nicknamed by staff as ”Semien Mountain“, in reference to a local landmark. Ethiopian Airlines successful attempt beat the previous benchmark of 342, which had been set by the Asahi Shogakusei Shinbun Kids’ Challenge Project in Tokyo back in March. After breaking the record by eight participants, Ethiopian Airlines now stands as the fastest growing, leading, and record-holding panAfrican Airline.

Qatar Airways to buy 49 percent of Italy's Meridiana Qatar Airways is to buy 49 percent of Meridiana in a move that could bolster the Italian carrier's ability to compete in the European market. The agreement was reached at the Farnborough International Airshow and the deal will close in early October, subject to certain conditions, Qatar Airways said in a statement on Thursday. The airline gave no further detail on the conditions or the price. Meridiana had asked labour unions to agree to 900 job cuts - nearly half its workforce - as part of a planned partnership with Qatar Airways, a person involved in the talks told Reuters in February. Last month, the Italian government, unions and Meridiana reached an agreement opening the way for the deal to go ahead. The agreement included the loss of about 400 jobs and a 20 percent wage cut compared with those stipulated in national collective contracts for the sector, union officials said. Meridiana, which offers flights to and from the island of Sardinia and other destinations in Italyand elsewhere, is owned by the Aga Khan, a businessman and spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims. "Today, an intense working period starts thanks to this agreement," Meridiana Chairman Marco Rigotti said in a statement. "I'm confident that all the Meridiana staff ... will know how to take advantage of this important opportunity to create a new phase for our company." The airline is operating under a government-sponsored restructuring plan to help turn it around. "Partnering with Meridiana would only make Meridiana prosper, grow and actually increase the working population of Meridiana," Qatar Airlines Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker said in April. "But for the initial period there will be some pain on the part of employees."

More promotional activities at Frankfurt and Munich airports are scheduled for the start of the summer holidays in Hessen and Bavaria on 16 July and 30 July respectively. For younger passengers, there are colorful tattoos depicting the main characters and corresponding boarding passes for cuddly animals. "Finding Dory" screen savers at the check-in machines are meant to increase passengers' anticipation of the cinema release on 29 September. In August children can also pass their time on board playing a "Finding Dory" water game. Airlines will need to up their game as TripAdvisor adds airline reviews Cape Town – Tripadvisor has revealed a redesign of its flight search functionality on Tuesday 12 July and it now includes the ability to review airline carriers. Skift reports the revamped TripAdvisor flight search, which will allow user reviews of airlines and flights, travellers’ photos of seats and lounges, amenity information and flight scores is available on desktop and mobile in 48 countries and 28 languages. Reviews factor in what is referred to as a ”flyscore,“ and allows airlines to be ranked on things like seat comfort and legroom space, ease of check-in and boarding, cleanliness, available amenities including food and drink as well as wi-fi and entertainment, and overall value for the money. ”Airline reviews from the millions of flyers on TripAdvisor will better communicate the total value of a flight beyond the price,“ says Tripadvisor. The new functionality has has been in beta testing and currently a host of reviews are already available. Admittedly airlines get a lot of flak, largely due to delays and additional charges, so it would be interesting to see how these issues translate into the realm of online reviews. Airlines will have to join the TripAdvisor management centre so as to respond to passenger reviews. Most local airlines were available. Currently South African Airways has 223 reviews, Mango has 41 reviews, while kulula has none. A search to review FlySafair, declared the airline unrecognised. When users review an airline on TripAdvisor, they specify the origin, destination and the month and year they flew and can optionally insert the flight number before rating the airline and detailing their experiences.

The Evolution of Revenue Management The Evolution of Revenue Management Business challenges for airlines are evolving, yet they still continue to center around the core requirements to increase company profits, improve analysts’ productivity and quicken responsiveness to changes in the marketplace while enhancing the customer experience. A next generation revenue management solution empowered by innovative technology must deliver on these requirements and support airlines’ path toward realizing total revenue optimization.
Pricing and Revenue-Management Shift Regardless of geography, business model or size, carriers are faced with an ever-increasing number of obstacles they must overcome to achieve success in today’s highly competitive environment. These obstacles encompass the familiar areas of increasing profits, evolving distribution models, interpreting volumes of unstructured data and the need to offer a more personalized customer experience.
