High-Tech Jobs on the Ground Keep Egypt's Economy Flying Many different advanced skills are required to run an airline. While pilots get most of the attention, the technical and engineering knowledge required to maintain, repair and overhaul (MRO) aircraft engines are equally crucial. Only highly skilled professionals with advanced training can work on these machines. So as EGYPTAIR works with GE to expand its MRO capabilities to handle the CFM56-7B engine line, it's also contributing to the country's economic development by creating high-tech job opportunities for Egyptians. GE is working with EgyptAir – the only full-service MRO provider in Egypt – through a TrueChoice ™ Materials agreement . CFM is a 50/50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines. GE is providing technical support and consulting for MRO operations, facility readiness, tooling optimization and other necessary services required to achieve facility certification. The new MRO capability is part of EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering's determination to grow its MRO business and expand its capabilities with state-of the-art technology to emerge as an independent MRO provider for various aircraft, aircraft engines and components. "EGYPTAIR Maintenance and Engineering is growing its MRO business and expanding its capabilities with the state-of the-art technology to be an independent MRO provider for various aircraft, aircraft engines and components. We look forward to working with GE to enhance our CFM56-7B MRO capability and be a major player in the MRO industry and more," said Abou Taleb, Chairman of Egypt Air's Maintenance and Engineering Company.

With their intention for deeper cooperation, EGYPTAIR and GE agreed they will study the possibilities of operating EGYPTAIR engine shop together as a center of Excellence in the region. Established in 1932 as the seventh carrier in the world, EGYPTAIR operates 80 aircraft with 60 percent of the fleet powered by GE and CFM* engines. The carrier flies to more than 75 destinations around the world and is a member of the Star Alliance. "This agreement will further strengthen our partnership with EGYPTAIR which extends to over 35 years," said Isam Moursy, Vice President of Regional Sales for GE Aviation in Africa. "This a true testament of how we can continue working with our partners to drive localization in Egypt and build local capability and know-how. EGYPTAIR is one of the world's pioneer airlines, and our collaboration on MRO efforts will continue in the airline's long tradition of entrepreneurial endeavors." The TrueChoice suite of engine maintenance offerings for commercial aviation industry emphasizes the breadth and depth of capabilities and customization across the entire engine lifecycle. More than 550 employees work in Egypt with GE . The company operates across a variety of industries, where it is creating job opportunities for Egyptians and continues to invest in building local talent and talent management. GE began this journey in Egypt in 1974 , and by helping its customers address their most difficult challenges, GE is continuing to deliver better outcomes for Egypt by speaking the language of industry. This includes the aviation sector, where GE technology powers 60% of EgyptAir's 80-aircraft fleet.

South African Airways operates flight with nicotine-free tobacco-based biofuel Boeing, South African Airways (SAA) and low-cost carrier Mango have operated Africa’s first sustainable-fuelled flights powered with tobacco-based biofuels. The SAA and Mango flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, operated by a Boeing 737-800, used sustainable biojet fuel produced from Sunchem’s nicotine-free tobacco plant Solaris, refined by AltAir Fuels and supplied by SkyNRG. Project Solaris, launched in 2014, is an effort from SkyNRG, Sunchem SA, South African Airways and Boeing to develop sustainable biojet fuel from the Solaris crop. In 2015, Project Solaris earned the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) certification, one of the strongest sustainability standards for biomaterials in the world. The RSB certification provides a model to further expand the production of the Solaris crop in a sustainable way. "It is fitting that on our 100 year anniversary we are flying on fuels that not only power the flight, but ensure a sustainable future for our industry," said Miguel Santos, managing director for Africa, Boeing International. "This project is a great example of environmental stewardship that delivers economic and health benefits to South Africa."

(1)

http://biofuels-news.com/ ―Over the last two years Sunchem SA successfully worked side by side with local farmers in Marble Hall, Limpopo to grow the Solaris crop and make today's biofuel flight a success. We are very proud about this achievement as it shows that the patented Sunchem Solaris technology opens a new market for Southern Africa and beyond,‖ said Hayo de Feijter, CEO Sunchem SA. Ethiopian Airlines sets world record as it becomes seventh A350 operator; French Blue welcomes its first A330 Deliveries during the sixth month of 2016 between Airbus and Boeing totalled 138 units, 10 more aircraft than what was delivered during the fifth month of this year by both companies, but equal to that delivered in the same month of 2015. During June, Boeing distributed 74 aircraft, with the European manufacturer garnering a total of 64. The result means that so far in 2016 Boeing has delivered 77 more aircraft than Airbus, increasing its lead by 10 units when compared to May’s difference between the two manufactures. Boeing’s June delivery total is seven units more that what it delivered in the same month of last year, while Airbus delivered three more aircraft when compared to June 2015. Overall 70% of deliveries in June were narrow-body aircraft, with the remaining 30% being wide-body. Looking at the widebody market for June, Boeing produced 71% of aircraft (down from 73% in May), while Airbus produced the remaining 29%

http://www.anna.aero/ Airbus: 64 deliveries in May (52 narrow-body, 12 wide-body)

(2)

http://www.anna.aero/ Airbus ended June with a total of 64 unit deliveries, which is seven more than what the company delivered in May, and three more than what it distributed during the corresponding month of last year. In June, single-aisle deliveries were led by the A320 (29 units – three more than May), while the A321 followed in second place (23 units – up one from May), with a grand total of 52 single-aisle aircraft being provided to carriers around the world. It should be noted that no A318s or A319s were delivered. This means that Airbus produced seven more narrow-body aircraft than Boeing in June. A total of 21 airlines received A320s (up five from the total of May), with China Eastern Airlines, Eurowings, Juneyao Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Spring Airlines, VietJetAir and VivaAerobus being the largest recipients of the variant, with the seven airlines each picking up two of the type. In relation to A321 deliveries, 16 carriers picked up the type (the same as in May), with American Airlines being the biggest customer, collecting three. Beijing Capital Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, and Wizz Air all picked up two A321s. Delta, Tibet Airlines and Turkish Airlines were three carriers which welcomed a narrow-body and wide-body aircraft from Airbus in June. Looking at wide-body deliveries, Airbus handed over 12 airframes in June, three more than in May. Following on from the delivery of three A380s in the fourth and fifth months of this year, the European producer handed over three again in June, with two aircraft going to the world’s leading A380 operator Emirates, while the other was handed over to UK flag carrier British Airways. All four wide-body aircraft produced by Airbus – A330-200 and -300, A350 and A380 – were all delivered to airlines in June. What is also interesting is that three of each type were delivered to carriers. Emirates was the only carrier to pick up more than one wide-body unit last month. Ethiopian Airlines collected its first A350 in June, with it becoming the seventh operator of the type after Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, LATAM Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Vietnam Airlines. To celebrate, the airlines achieved the world record of creating the largest ever human image of an aircraft.

Boeing: 74 deliveries in June (45 single-aisle, 29 wide-body)

(4)

http://www.anna.aero/ Boeing closed June with a total of 74 unit deliveries, three more than in May, and seven more than in the corresponding month of 2015. Airlines received a total of 45 single-aisle units from Boeing in June, two less than May. A total of 40 737-800s were delivered, while only three 737-900s were. It should also be noted that two 737-700s were delivered in June to leasing companies. Ryanair, which was the largest recipient of the 737-800 in May, April, March and February, picking up eight of the variant into its fleet each month, did not pick up one aircraft in June. However for 2016 the Irish LCC is still the largest recipient of the -800, having welcomed 40 since January. As a result, it has meant that Xiamen Airlines is the largest recipient of the -800 in June, collecting five of the type. In total, 18 airlines were delivered single-aisle units from the American manufacturer during June, five more than in May. Nonetheless it should be noted that 15 737-800s were delivered to leasing companies, as well as the two mentioned -700s. An analysis of wide-body deliveries reveals that Boeing handed over a total of 29 units to airlines in June, five more than in May, and 10 more than April. Boeing handed over 14 787s in June, four more than the month previous. Air China, British Airways and United Airlines were the largest recipient of the 787-9, with the Star Alliance and oneworld members picking up two of the type each. TUIfly also collected its first 787-9 last month. Of June’s 787 deliveries, only three were -8 variants, with Air Europa, Ethiopian Airlines and Japan Airlines each collecting one. Korean Air was the recipient of the only 747-8 to be handed over in June, its third delivery of the type this year. It also collected one 777-300.

Shares in European airlines and hotels are tumbling after the Nice terror attack Shares in European airlines, hotels, and travel groups are plummeting on Friday after a devastating terrorist attack in the southern French city of Nice on Thursday night. At least 84 people were killed in the city when an attacker drove a lorry a truck ran into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day national holiday at around 10:30 p.m. local time. The attack — a third major terrorist tragedy in France in the last 18 months — shocked investors in companies associated with the travel and tourist industry and has pushed shares substantially lower so far on the day. Hotel groups have been the worst affected stocks so far. This is how Accor — the French listed hotel firm which operates, amongst other things Ibis, Novotel, and Sofitel hotels — looks at around 12:25 p.m. BST (7:25 a.m. ET):

http://uk.businessinsider.c om/ Airline groups, including easyJet, British Airways' parent company International Consolidated Airlines Group, and RyanAir are among the stocks lower on the day. This is how easyJet looks:

As Mike van Dulken of Accendo Markets noted in a morning email, "The subject of terrorism is sure to dominate headlines today, with attention also sure to focus on what this means for the evolving shape of the political landscape in France and the US (Le Pen, Trump sure to gain more support), not to mention how the UK views this in light of having just voted to leave the EU."

(2)

http://uk.businessinsider.c om/ The negative reaction of travel-based stocks is becoming a grimly familiar sight in Europe. Shares in similar companies experienced virtually the same reaction following the Brussels terrorist attacks in March, when attackers detonated explosive devices in the Belgian capital's airport and metro network. Overall, European stocks are trading substantially lower on the day, thanks to the attack. Every major European index is trading at least marginally lower this afternoon. Here is the scoreboard:

Turkish forces fight to crush coup remnants after Erdogan returns Forces loyal to the Turkish government fought on Saturday to crush the remnants of a military coup attempt which crumbled after crowds answered President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's call to take to the streets and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said 161 people had been killed and 1,440 wounded after a faction of the armed forces tried to seize power using tanks and attack helicopters. Some strafed the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in the capital, Ankara, and others seized a major bridge in Istanbul. The death toll given by Yildirim was lower than a previous militaryprovided total of 194 people. Erdogan accused the coup plotters of trying to kill him and launched a purge of the armed forces, which last used force to stage a successful coup more than 30 years ago. Coup attempt in Turkey: What we know so far 'I cannot believe this is real,': Witnesses on Istanbul chaos "They will pay a heavy price for this," said Erdogan, who also saw off mass public protests against his rule three years ago. "This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army." One government minister said some military commanders were still being held hostage by the plotters. But the government declared the situation fully under control, saying 161 people had been killed and 2,839 had been rounded up from foot soldiers to senior officers, including those who had formed "the backbone" of the rebellion. A successful overthrow of Erdogan, who has ruled the country of about 80 million people since 2003, would have marked one of the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming a major U.S. ally while war rages on its border

However, a failed coup attempt could still destabilize a NATO member that lies between the European Union and the chaos of Syria, with Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) bombers targeting Turkish cities and the government also at war with Kurdish separatists. Erdogan, who had been holidaying on the southwest coast when the coup was launched, flew into Istanbul before dawn on Saturday and was shown on TV outside Ataturk Airport. Addressing a crowd of thousands of flag-waving supporters at the airport later, Erdogan said the government remained at the helm, although disturbances continued in Ankara. Erdogan says he was targeted Erdogan, whose Islamist-rooted ideology lies at odds with supporters of modern Turkey's secular principles, said the plotters had tried to attack him in the resort town of Marmaris. "They bombed places I had departed right after I was gone," he said. "They probably thought we were still there."

Erdogan's AK Party has long had strained relations with the military, which has a history of mounting coups to defend secularism although it has not seized power directly since 1980. Operations involving police special forces and the military were still underway to regain control of the armed forces headquarters in Ankara, one official said. While loved by his supporters, Erdogan's conservative religious views have also alienated many ordinary Turks who accuse him of authoritarianism. Police used heavy force in 2013 to suppress mass protest demanding more freedom. Video-calling address In a night that sometimes verged on the bizarre, Erdogan took to social media even though he is an avowed enemy of the technology when his opponents use it, frequently targeting Twitter and Facebook. Erdogan addressed the nation via a video-calling service, appearing on the smartphone of a CNN Turk reporter who held it up to a studio camera so viewers to the network could see him. He said the "parallel structure" was behind the coup attempt — his shorthand for followers of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric whom he has repeatedly accused of trying to foment an uprising in the military, media and judiciary.

Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States, once supported Erdogan but became a nemesis. The pro-Gulen Alliance for Shared Values said it condemned any military intervention in domestic politics. The pro-coup faction said in an emailed statement from the Turkish military General Staff's media office address that it was determinedly still fighting. Gunfire and explosions had rocked both Istanbul and Ankara through the night after soldiers took up positions in both cities and ordered state television to read out a statement declaring they had taken power. However, by dawn the noise of fighting had died down considerably. Soldiers abandon tanks About 50 soldiers involved in the coup surrendered on one of the bridges across the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul after dawn on Saturday, abandoning their tanks with their hands raised in the air. Reuters witnesses saw government supporters attack the pro-coup soldiers who had surrendered. Earlier, around 30 pro-coup soldiers had surrendered their weapons after being surrounded by armed police in Istanbul's central Taksim square. They were taken away in police vans as a fighter jet repeatedly screeched overhead at low altitude, causing a boom that shook surrounding buildings and shattered windows. Neighbouring Greece arrested eight men aboard a Turkish military helicopter which landed in the northern city of Alexandroupolis on Saturday, the country's police ministry said, adding that they had requested political asylum.

Warplanes roar over Ankara The coup began with warplanes and helicopters roaring over Ankara and troops moving in to seal off the bridges over the Bosporus Strait that links Europe and Asia in Istanbul. Maritime authorities shut Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait to transiting tankers "for security and safety" reasons, shipping agent GAC said. In the early hours of Saturday, lawmakers were hiding in shelters inside the parliament building, which was being fired on by tanks. Smoke rose up from nearby, Reuters witnesses said. An opposition MP told Reuters parliament was hit three times and that people had been wounded. A senior Turkish official said later on Saturday attacks on the parliament had "largely stopped". A Turkish military commander also said fighter jets had shot down a helicopter used by the coup plotters over Ankara. State-run Anadolu news agency said 17 police were killed at special forces headquarters there. Momentum turned against the coup plotters as the night wore on. Crowds defied orders to stay indoors, gathering at major squares in Istanbul and Ankara, waving flags and chanting. "We have a prime minister, we have a chief of command, we're not going to leave this country to degenerates," shouted one man, as groups of government supporters climbed onto a tank near Ataturk airport. The Turkish Embassy in Ottawa said the coup was "foiled by the Turkish people in unity and solidarity." It said not all the Turkish armed forces were behind the move. "It was conducted by a clique within the Armed Forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation," the statement said.

Flights diverted, canceled as coup attempt unfolds in Turkey July 15 (Reuters) - Flights to Turkey diverted and departures from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport were canceled as a coup attempt unfolded in the country on Friday and Turkey's military said it had seized power. This was the latest shock to tourism in Turkey, which has taken a hit from a number of bombings this year, including a suicide attack in June that killed 45 people at Istanbul's main airport. A Reuters witness in Istanbul, citing a pilot, said all upcoming flights from the Istanbul airport had been canceled. Flight tracking website FlightAware.com so far listed 32 canceled departures for Friday and Saturday. A British Airways flight to Istanbul diverted to Sofia, Bulgaria, and a Lufthansa flight to Istanbul returned to its origin in Frankfurt, company spokeswomen told Reuters. British Airways said on its website that customers traveling through Istanbul this weekend could rebook travel. Some travelers reported on social media that they or their loved ones were stranded. Twitter user Cynthia Wee (@Its_A_Cyn) said, "many stranded at airport #help," noting in another post that she was stuck in Istanbul with her family and scared. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said all U.S.-inbound flights from Istanbul that were in the air prior to the airport's closing would be allowed to land in the United States as planned. Turkish Airlines and other carriers did not immediately comment.

As of July 2, international flight bookings to Istanbul for trips in the second half of the year were down 36 percent from a year ago, travel data analysis company ForwardKeys said on its website. Arrivals from the Americas and Asia-Pacific were down 45 percent, according to ForwardKeys. In the past six months, bombings in Istanbul led to progressively sharper declines in bookings, it said. Turkey's prime minister said the attempted coup would be put down. President Tayyip Erdogan has ruled Turkey since 2003, and Turkey is one of the most important U.S. allies in the region. Frustrated, stranded and scared: Thousands of airline passengers at Istanbul airports Turkish Airlines, a 5 Star Airline just this week rewarded many honors, a member of the Star Alliance, seems to be an airline unable to handle emergencies. After ordered by no other than the head of State, at 6.00 am Istanbul time the airline tweeted: "Turkish Airlines announced by order of Turkish president Erdogan on their operations at Istanbul Airport:

We kindly ask our passengers to check our website for new information. When eTN checked the Turkish Airlines booking portal, there is no prominent information on the situation in Istanbul and on Turkish Airlines flights. There is information on the recent terror attack at Istanbul Ataturk airport however. The airline came to a still-stand overnight and phone calls ring dead, media relation phone numbers don't answer and emails go into cyberspace. According to information received by eTN readers stranded at Istanbul airports, ten-thousands of stranded airline passengers, business travelers, tourists and VIP's are walking long hallways, tired, frustrated and scared. This has been the scene and is the picture currently at Istanbul Ataturk International Airport. One of this passenger tweeted: "Turkish Airlines you are not telling the truth. Nothing is normal here. There is no responsible person, no guide, no personnel in IST airport. Another response: There's no Turkish Airlines flight in and out? The announcement Turkish Airlines is resuming operation is total bluff? Another frustrated Star Alliance Gold passenger writes: "Over a thousand people stranded at IST. No information at all. No staff at departures." More tweets repeat: "No one has given us any information. so no, it's not back to normal." Dr. Abdalla M Ahmed said: TurkishAirlines this is highly unprofessional by the way. Leaving us stranded for hours with no one to explain and inform us. "It'll take a lot of Skytrax awards to erase the PR disaster TurkishAirlines is having with this situation." Passengers trying to find out if they are leaving anywhere keep asking: "TurkishAirlines at least inform your staff to man their desks so people can ask questions and not panic for many hours on end."

Which airlines rank lowest on list of top 100 worldwide The U.S. aviation industry needs to step up their flights. Earlier this week Skytrax presented the 2016 World Airline Awards, which ranks the top 100 airlines from around the globe. The first mention of a U.S.-based airline came in at 25 with Virgin America. The bottom of the pack was mostly foreign companies. American companies were more than shut out of the top 10. The full list was based on votes from airline customers from around the world and put together by Skytrax, an international air transport rating organization based in London. No one wants to be on the bottom of the list, but these 10 companies found themselves in the not-so-enviable spots. Many of them are budget airlines that only offer short-distance domestic routes, so keep that in mind. 90. Juneyao Airlines, China 91. Fiji Airways, Fiji 92. LOT Polish, Poland 93.
