FlyDubai plane crashes in southern Russia; all 61 people aboard aircraft dead Moscow: Russia's Emergencies Ministry says a passenger airliner from Dubai has crashed while trying to land at the airport in the southern city of Rostov-onDon. A ministry statement says the crash occurred Saturday morning and identified the plane as a Boeing 737-800 that was coming from Dubai, but did not say how many people were aboard. Russian news reports cited unnamed sources as saying there were around 60 people aboard. This was confirmed by Marina Kostioukova, spokeswoman for the local emergencies ministry, who said, "The plane with 55 passengers and four or five crew on board, coming from Dubai, crashed as it came into land at the airport in Rostov-on-Don." According to AFP, officials later confirmed that the number of people killed aboard the flight was 61. The accident occurred at around 12.50 am GMT (6.20 am IST), according to an official statement from the ministry. "The Boeing 737 on the Dubai to Rostov-on-Don route caught fire (after crashing)," said the statement, adding that the fire was brought under control by 2 am GMT (7.30 am IST). The FlyDubai airline said on its Facebook page: "We are aware of an incident involving our flight FZ981 from Dubai to Rostov On Don. We are investigating." State news agency Tass reported that the Investigative Committee, the country's top investigative agency, said preliminary information indicates the plane was landing when it hit the ground and broke into pieces at the airport about 950 kilometres (600 miles) south of Moscow. There was no immediate information on the cause, although some news reports suggested weather could have been a factor. There was rain and winds of about 11 meter per second (25 mph) at the time of the crash. On 31 October a Russian airliner blew up in the air over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 aboard. Investigators determined it was destroyed by a bomb onboard.

Flight of terror: American Airlines plane makes emergency landing after being struck by lightning; all passengers safe New York: Nearly 60 people on board an American Airlines flight had a terrifying experience when a lightning struck the plane over New York city, forcing the pilot to divert the aircraft and make an emergency landing at John F Kennedy International Airport. Officials said American Airlines Flight 4233 from Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina was hit by lightning around 6 pm on Thursday as the plane was circling New York City. As the plane approached New York, it hit turbulent skies. The lightning strike forced the Embraer E170 plane with 55 passengers and four crew members to land at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport, about 10 miles away from LaGuardia Airport. None was hurt, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). "There was a very bright burst of blue and a tremendous bang, like the plane had been hit by something," said Rebecca Seger of Yorktown. Seger snapped photos of the gloomy skies from inside the plane, and moments later, she said she saw and felt the flash of lightning. There was a moment of silence as shock spread across the cabin, and then the pilot came on the public announcement system, she said. "He just told us the plane had been hit by lightning but the pilot said everything was OK," said Seger. "Then he came on about five minutes later and told us they didn't know if they could get us into LaGuardia because there was too much traffic and thunderstorms near it, obviously, and that we might go to JFK." The plane was redirected to Kennedy Airport, where fire trucks awaited its landing. Emergency responders lined the tarmac to examine the plane. "Cops and more fire trucks came and examined the plane for like 20 minutes before we were able to move to the terminal," said Seger. Seger, a business traveler who flies more than 100 flights a year, said she has never experienced such situation before.

Malaysia Airlines and Emirates codeshare flights

Don’t be surprised if you see two codes on the Kuala Lumpur-Dubai route as well as and some other routes when looking at the flight board at KL International Airport nowadays. Or when you book a flight. Since late last month, Malaysia Airlines and Emirates have had a “codeshare” agreement in place – ie, when two airlines share routes. For the Dubai route, there will be three flights a day on a Boeing 77 and one on an Airbus 380. This is one of Malaysia Airlines’ largest codeshare agreements. It opens up a host of new destinations for customers by providing unprecedented access to Emirates’ network and, through, Emirates, access to Malaysia Airlines’ network in Malaysia, South-East Asia and the Asia Pacific. For Malaysia Airlines’ customers, this will include over 30 South American and European destinations including Rome, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Stockholm, Madrid, Barcelona and others, which will be introduced progressively over the weeks as regulatory approvals are obtained. In addition this will also open up routes to the Middle East, Canada and Africa.
