Qatar Airways adopts fleet management system Qatar Airways announced the successful completion and implementation of a new fleet management system called TOPS that allows the airline to optimally schedule aircraft and better manage flights, ultimately driving a more efficient and effective airline for its passengers. TOPS, which stands for Total OPerations System, integrates data from multiple sources and produces a holistic view of the airline’s operation, from the global scale to the individual flight level, in order to anticipate and notify operations staff of any potential issue and provide solution options. Specific tasks that can now be carried out due to this integration include, but are not limited to: tail assignment optimizer, whereby aircraft are assigned to specific lines of flying with respect to the operational needs of the route, based on the specific aircraft’s capabilities; NOTAM manager, where Notice to Airmen are immediately communicated to the specific dispatchers and operations staff for more perfect situational awareness; and Flight Watch, which consolidates all flight data into a single graphical source for ease of tracking, communicating with and managing the airline’s more than 500 daily flights to more than 150 destinations in six continents. TOPS’ Flight Watch, launched in 2015, offers operations personnel multiple filters, such as weather patterns, flight path routing, and restricted or prohibited air space so that the team of professionals in the airline’s Integrated Operations Centre have near-perfect awareness of each airborne flight, and the ability to quickly communicate with the flight deck. The airline is also developing a maintenance planning optimizer to help schedule around aircraft scheduled out of service time, which is expected to go live by the end of 2016. EgyptAir says Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo has 'disappeared from radar' An EgyptAir aircraft, en route Thursday from Paris to Cairo with 66 people on board, has disappeared over the Mediterranean. Egypt and Greece have scrambled search and rescue teams to the southern Mediterranean to search for the plane, as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said no cause for the disappearance could yet be ruled out. According to an Associated Press report, citing Egyptian aviation officials, the EgyptAir flight Flight MS804 had crashed in the Mediterranean sea early Thursday morning. There has been no official confirmation and NBC News has not been able to independently verify the report. Egyptair is updating its Twitter account regularly and said that Egypt's Prime Minister Sherif Ismail had arrived at the airline's crisis center after cutting short a visit to Jeddah. The airline urged restraint from the media in the reporting of the incident amid conflicting reports about distress signals from the missing plane. Egypt's minister of Civil Aviation is due to give a press conference at 13:30 local time, 12:30 London time (07:30 ET). News of the incident emerged in the early hours on Thursday. In an Arabic-language Facebook post just before 5 a.m. local time, EgyptAir cited an "official source" as saying the flight, which took off from Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport at 11.09 p.m. Paris time, had "disappeared from radar in the early hours of (the) day." In a series of subsequent tweets and statements, EgyptAir said that the plane - an Airbus A320 - was carrying 56 passengers, including one child and two infants, as well as three of the airline's security personnel and seven crew members, taking the total number of people on board to 66.
