The expanded agreement provides new code-share routes from New York (JFK) to and from United States mainland destinations Albuquerque (ABQ), Daytona Beach (DAB), Reno (RNO) and Savannah (SAV), along with two Puerto Rican destinations, Aguadilla (BQN) and Ponce (PSE). “We are pleased to deepen our partnership with JetBlue and to give our world travellers superior access to destinations in the United States, through a seamless passenger experience. The strengthening of this code-share agreement comes at a time when Qatar Airways is focused upon significantly expanding its own direct links to the United States, with the launch of non-stop services to Los Angeles, Atlanta and Boston in 2016,” said Akbar Al Baker, Group Chief Executive, Qatar Airways. In addition to the new destinations, the partnership will increase the number of codeshare flights along existing routes to Buffalo (BUF), Burlington (BTV), Charleston (CHS), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Jacksonville (JAX), New Orleans (MSY), Oakland (OAK), Portland (PWM), Rochester (ROC), Syracuse (SYR) and Tampa (TPA). The expanded agreement will also include connections to and from Qatar Airways’ second daily Doha to New York flight beginning 1st March 2016. The second daily service will be operated by the airline’s latest flagship Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, of which Qatar Airways was the Global Launch Customer.

New airline FlyAfrica.com takes off The new airline is aimed at enhancing air connectivity across Africa and reducing the cost of doing business in Africa, Bongo said. The announcement was made on the second day of the New York Forum Africa - one of the largest gatherings of politicians, investors, entrepreneurs, and NGOs in Africa - hosted under Bongo's patronage. Other heads of state and key political figures attending the forum include President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Cost, former president of Colombia Andres Pastrana, former president of Poland Lech Walesa, and former president of the European Union Jose Barosso. The affordable low-cost model, which has worked successfully in Europe and Asia by contributing significantly to economic growth of those regions, is expected to herald a revolution in Africa's airline industry, unlocking the continent's potential by boosting the economic mobility of its citizens, and encouraging increased trade as a result of the airline's unprecedented low fares for passengers and goods. Announcing the launch, Bongo said: “My vision for Africa has always been that of an integrated continent. “An Africa where every citizen has the opportunity to afford air travel and take advantage of the benefits of being economically mobile. The launch of Gabon FlyAfrica.com, a pan-African airline, is an important step in implementing this vision. One of the biggest obstacles to Africa's growth and development was the cost of doing business in Africa, he said. Moving goods and people between African states was still too complicated and expensive and remained a major obstacle to the prosperity of the continent. Bongo called on African countries to improve connectivity across Africa to reduce the cost of doing business and facilitate air travel. He urged African countries to implement the Yamoussoukro Declaration (YD), which was the basis for creating a single airspace market for Africa.

(Continue) “Aviation is the next infrastructure growth frontier for Africa. Enhancing air connectivity can help raise productivity and create jobs by encouraging investment and innovation, improving business operations and efficiency. “Air transport is indispensable for tourism, where convenient air service facilitates the arrival of larger numbers of tourists,” he said. FlyAfrica.com was launched 13 months ago in Southern Africa where the business model was tested and refined with the successful establishment of airlines in Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. FlyAfrica.com has significantly shaken up the airline industry in Africa by offering the lowest airfares on the continent and proving that the low-cost model is sustainable. On the Johannesburg to Harare route the airline has reduced fares between 50 and 70 percent. The second phase of the airline's roll-out will include Gabon and other countries in East and West Africa. The announcement outlines a strategic partnership between the government of Gabon and African industrialist, venture capitalist, and philanthropist Ivor Ichikowitz. “One of Africa's huge resources is its ability for innovation which continues to generate new products, ideas, and services that places Africa at the forefront of emerging technologies and solutions,” Ichikowitz said. “The launch of FlyAfrica.com is such an innovation and will be the game-changer for Africa's aviation industry. “The aim of FlyAfrica.com is to break down the barriers and costs that currently exist to travel across Africa. Prohibitively high fares, poor or non-existent services are playing their role in slowing down the development of this continent. “FlyAfrica.com is designed to change that. FlyAfrica.com will lead the charge for unlocking Africa's business and tourism potential by delivering world-class standards and low fares traditionally associated with airlines in Europe and Asia,” he said.

Advantage makes move against Lufthansa over GDS fee A leading consortium of business travel agencies has started a “period of non-co-operation” with Lufthansa as the airline is due to start charging €16 for tickets booked through GDS. Lufthansa Group, which also includes Austrian Swiss and Brussels Airlines, is due to start levying the €16 charge on GDS bookings from tomorrow (September 1) in a move that has caused controversy within the business travel industry. Advantage Focus Partnership, which includes 66 business travel agencies, has responded by writing to Lufthansa Group to say that it will impose restrictions on training, educational trips, marketing and account manager sales calls. Ken McLeod, Advantage’s corporate director, said: “We believe that this fee is unacceptable in its current form, and is a drive by Lufthansa to discriminate against TMCs and the wider agency community by imposing a differential pricing structure between the GDS and their own trade website.” “We should make it clear that the 66 members of the Advantage Focus Partnership will continue to sell Lufthansa flights as per their clients’ wishes, and dialogue will continue with the airline’s senior management, but only through Advantage Central Office with the Focus Partnership negotiating team.” McLeod added: “I liken it to putting a protest placard outside the airline’s HQ to indicate our real concerns that this move will eventually have a domino effect on the industry.” GTMC chief executive Paul Wait said the organisation would be keeping a “watching brief” on the impact of Lufthansa’s GDS fee in the next few months. “Our travel management members clearly recognise the value of a GDS and have shown little interest in Lufthansa’s moves to disrupt the system,” said Wait. “The value that TMCs deliver is significant when considering that GTMC members book over 80 per cent of UK expenditure on managed business travel and yet, have seemingly been disregarded by Lufthansa. “The Lufthansa website cannot offer the added value, expertise and knowledge that booking via a GDS always has nor can it put a duty of care at the heart of its decisions as a professional TMC can.” Read our analysis on Lufthansa’s GDS fee and whether other airlines are likely to follow suit.

Malaysia Airlines' new holding company secures AOC Malaysia Airlines Berhad has secured its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the country's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in time for a September 1 'relaunch' of Malaysia Airlines (MH,Kuala Lumpur Int'l). Launched in July, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (NewCo) is a vehicle for the migration of Malaysia Airlines' relevant operations, assets and liabilities after its predecessor Malaysian Airline System Berhad (MAS) was placed into receivership in May. “We would like to thank the Director General of DCA, Dato’ Sri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman for this very important milestone," MAB’s CEO Designate Christoph Mueller said. "The AOC is a testament to all our staff at Malaysia Airlines who have been working hard to fulfill all the necessary requirements and specifications by DCA. We are very excited and focused on MAB's take-off in September.” The move is part of Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah's 12point strategy to revitalize the struggling national carrier which between 2010 and 2013, racked up losses of USD1.3 billion. In line with its launch this week, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) has already rehired a more streamlined staff compliment of approximately 14,000 from the soon-to-be-defunct MAS's reserve of 20,000.

Etihad and Emirates show airline alliances are outdated Aviation alliances are bad for brands, new analysis shows, in the wake of criticism made by UAE airline chiefs about the global carrier agreements. Most of the world’s big airlines are members of one of the top-three alliances, namely the Star Alliance, Oneworld or SkyTeam. But airlines that shun such alliances saw healthier increases in brand valuations this year, according to an analysis of data from the UK consultancy Brand Finance by The National. The world’s top-50 airlines ranked by brand value includes 36 alliance members. Of those for which comparative data is available, member airlines saw a total average 3.4 per cent decline in their 2015 brand valuations. But airlines that are not alliance members saw an average rise of 12.3 per cent in their brand values, the data shows. Savio D’Souza, the associate director at Brand Finance, which also has operations in Abu Dhabi, says the likes of Etihad and Emirates have turned the alliance model “on its head”. Indeed, it “probably doesn’t work any more”, he says. The consultancy’s valuations are tied to the companies’ underlying business performance – and, as such, do not reflect well on airline alliances.

(Continue) For alliance members whose values rose, the average growth was just US$53 million between 2014 and 2015. But for nonalliance members with rising value, the average was $320m. The UAE’s two biggest airlines are not members of the three big airline alliances. Emirates’ president Tim Clark said in May alliances were “the old way” of doing things, while its chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum has said the Dubai airline could not have grown as big by joining an alliance. James Hogan, president and chief executive of Etihad, said last year that the model is “fractured”. Mr D’Souza points to Etihad’s model of “equity alliances”, where it invests in carriers in strategically important regions, as being more effective than regular alliances. The Abu Dhabi airline has invested in the likes of airberlin and Alitalia. “Etihad is doing really well,” says Mr D’Souza. “It does seem like something that might work much better.” Qatar Airways is the only one of the three big Arabian Gulf carriers to have joined an alliance, having joined Oneworld in 2013. “Qatar Airways was kind of talked into joining the Oneworld alliance a few years ago,” says Mr D’Souza. “I think once they joined it, the general feeling is that they haven’t really seen the benefit of it. So it does feel like the whole alliances model is a little broken and isn’t really working as it was envisaged.”

Austrian Airlines readies for Embraer E-195 deliveries Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines is preparing to receive the first of 17 modified Embraer E-195s. The first 120-seat jet will be used on training purposes initially before transitioning to revenue service. The first commercial flight is scheduled for January 2016. A second aircraft is expected to join the fleet in September. Austrian acquired 17 former Lufthansa CityLine Embraer E195s at a list price of nearly $900 million to replace its aging Fokker 70/100 fleet. Lufthansa CityLine in turn will receive Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen jets from Eurowings, which is to become an all-Airbus A320 operator. The Embraer jets have an average age of four years, compared to the average age of about 21 years with Austrian’s Fokker 70/100 fleet. The E-195s use about 18% less fuel per seat. Nearly 200 Austrian Airlines pilots will be retrained to operate the Embraer aircraft. The company has wet-leased two Estonian Air Embraer E-170s for the period of the pilottraining process. However, the retraining program is ambitious and the Star Alliance member was forced to cancel 70 short- and mediumhaul flights in late July in part because of a pilot shortage.

Lufthansa Group to expand direct booking channel options the airlines of the Lufthansa Group – Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS – have reached a major milestone in their endeavors to modernize their present product structures. A number of collaborations with various partners in the airline distribution segment have been successfully pursued over the last few weeks.
The efforts to develop and establish new “direct connect” booking channels are generating strong interest among the industry partners. “The market is clearly ready for innovations and developments of this kind,” confirms Jens Bischof, Member of the Executive Board and Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa German Airlines. “Our realignment of our distribution has prompted an intensive exchange of views and experiences within our industry.” “This process has had its share of controversy, too,” Bischof concedes. “But we are still as convinced as ever that offering advanced and, at the same time, substantially cheaper additional booking channels – that also allow us to better present our products – is in our customers’ best interests. And that’s why we consistently pursue the further development of our distribution channels.”

(Continue) As planned, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group are now taking a further major step in implementing their new commercial strategy by ensuring that from tomorrow (1 September), the costs of bookings made via global distribution systems (GDSs) are met more fairly and transparently by the users involved. To this end, a new “distribution cost charge” )DCC( of EUR 16 will now be applied to any ticket issued via GDS. Customers of the Lufthansa Group can obtain their tickets without having to pay the new DCC by making their bookings via the member airlines’ websites, via an airline service center or at an airport ticket desk. Travel agents may also use the dedicated www.LHGroup-agent.com online portal as a booking alternative. Corporate customers can continue to make their bookings at their individually-agreed contractual rates (i.e. with no DCC) via www.LH.com. Lufthansa has also concluded a new agreement with technology provider Concur, an SAP company, under which Concur will provide the Lufthansa Group’s corporate customer travel management units with special programs for managing these www.LH.com bookings from next year onwards. “We want to work together with the travel agents and the global distribution systems to make the sale of air tickets more up-to-date, more inexpensive and more customerminded,” Lufthansa CCO Bischof emphasizes. “And to this end we have swiftly developed a range of IT solutions that will be offered to our customers in the near future.”

Ethiopian Airlines Flying High As Other Carriers Sink Ethiopian Airlines last week announced that it had exceeded its profits target for 2014. The airline posted a $175 million profit last year, exceeding its revenue targets, and dwarfing its main African competitors in Kenya and South Africa, who have posted losses and are sinking in debt. The state-owned carrier said that its passenger numbers grew from 5.2 million to more than six million passengers in 2014, aided by lower fares and strong inter-continental routes, especially to Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. It now plans to double its fleet from the current 77 to 140 by 2025 as it positions itself to be Africa's largest carrier. While other major African airlines, including Kenya Airways and South African Airways, slid into loss, Ethiopian Airlines has grown its revenue and expanded its routes to become the most networked carrier on the continent.
