Full GE9X Engine Completes First Round of Ground Testing GE Aviation has completed the initial ground testing of the first full GE9X development engine, the company announced Wednesday. The world’s largest commercial aircraft engine with a front fan diameter of 134 inches, the 100,000-pound-thrust-class turbofan will power the Boeing 777X, scheduled to enter service in 2020. The first GE9X engine accumulated 167 hours, 213 cycles and 89 starts during ground testing. The recent testing provided data on the engine’s aero and thermal characteristics, mechanical integrity, performance and operability. GE Aviation plans to conduct preliminary ice testing on the first engine to test (FETT) later this year. ―This engine is living up to our expectations, and we are extremely pleased with the results,‖ said GE9X program general manager Ted Ingling, ―During ground testing at GE Aviation’s Peebles Testing Operation, the first GE9Xengine performed flawlessly, providing the engineering team with 1,200 individual data streams that reaffirmed the design.‖ The FETT represents the culmination of maturation testing on GE9X technologies that started five years ago. TheGE9X FETT testing, which began in late March, occurred much earlier in the engine development process than usual and just six months after GE finalized the engine design. According to GE, the timing allows the certification engines to encompass all FETT ―learnings.‖ A second round of testing has begun on a GEnx demonstrator engine with GE9X CMC (ceramic matrix composite) components in the combustor and turbine. Plans call for certification testing on the GE9X program to begin in the first half of next year along with flight testing on GE Aviation’s flying test bed. The company expects the engine to gain certification in 2018. (1) http://www.iata.org/ Real-Time Tracking of Bags to Save Air Transport Industry $3 Billion Dubai - The global deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which can accurately track passengers’ baggage in real time across key points in the journey, can enable the air transport industry to save more than US$3 billion over the next seven years. Global IT provider SITA and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) revealed that the highly accurate tracking rates of RFID technology could reduce the number of mishandled bags by up to 25% by 2022, mainly through efficient tracking. The SITA/IATA business case, released today at the IATA World Passenger Symposium taking place in Dubai, outlines how this will provide a major saving for airlines and deliver more certainty for passengers. Initial deployments of RFID by airlines, such as Delta Air Lines, show a 99 percent success rate for tracking bags. In particular, RFID will address mishandling during transfer from one flight to another, one of the key areas identified by SITA and IATA where the technology could help improve baggage handling rates. RFID technology will ensure that airports, airlines and ground handlers are able to keep track of bags at every step of the journey and ensure the right bag is loaded onto the correct flight. The technology also supports IATA’s Resolution 753 that requires by 2018 airlines keep track of every item of baggage from start to finish. The deployment of RFID would build on the already significant savings delivered by the smart use of technology for baggage management. According to the SITA Baggage Report 2016, technology has helped reduce the number of mishandled bags by 50% from a record 46.9 million mishandled bags in 2007, saving the industry US$ 22.4 billion. This improvement comes despite a sharp rise in passenger numbers over the same period. Jim Peters, Chief Technology Officer at SITA, said: ―The airline industry is at the brink of a revolution in baggage tracking. Deploying RFID globally will increase accuracy and reduce mishandling rates. This is a win-win situation – passengers will be happier, operations will run smoother and airlines will save billions of dollars.‖ Andrew Price, Head of Global Baggage Operations at IATA said: ―Over the past few years we have seen more work to help airlines introduce and reap the benefits of RFID technology through better oversight of their baggage operations. This has included trials and of course the Delta Air Lines implementation. The advances in the technology and the immense benefits it brings to the airline industry has prompted IATA to revisit and fully explore the benefits of RFID today.‖

With some big airlines and airports already introducing RFID technology, combined with the fact that it is compatible with existing barcode technology, adoption of RFID across all airports could provide a positive return for airlines, both in cost savings and passenger satisfaction. SITA’s and IATA's assumptions are based on RFID being deployed in 722 airports (representing 95% of passenger numbers globally) over a six-year period between 2016 and 2021 while the savings are calculated over seven years. The figures for 2016 take into account the RFID infrastructure already deployed or about to be deployed at multiple induction points on the baggage journey. SITA's research into RFID and baggage tracking is part of its ongoing investment in research for the benefit of the entire air transport community. Baggage tracking is one of the five community research programs that SITA has launched to address some of the industry's most pressing challenges. The others are identity management of the future; the facilitation of IATA's New Distribution Capability (NDC); an industry-wide disruption warning system; and enhancing cybersecurity across the industry.

Lufthansa plane lands in Canada after smoke detected BERLIN (AP) — German airline Lufthansa says a jet headed from Frankfurt to Orlando made an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland after the crew detected smoke in the cockpit. Lufthansa spokesman Joerg Waber said Wednesday that the crew of Flight 464, a Boeing 747-400 with 345 passengers and 18 crew members on board, decided to declare an emergency and landed safely in Gander at 1920 GMT (3:20 p.m. EDT) Tuesday. The cause of the smoke wasn't immediately clear. Technicians were being flown in to investigate. The passengers were to be flown on to Orlando later Wednesday. The 747-400 Jumbo-jet was on a flight from Frankfurt to Orlando with 345 passengers on board. The German news agency DPA and "Die Welt" newspaper reported Wednesday that the source of the smoke could not be identified after a safe landing. Lufthansa, like other airlines, recently banned the use of a new model mobile phone, the Galaxy Note 7, on its flights after Samsung recalled several million of its devices on fears that faulty batteries could catch fire. Lufthansa said the crew of 18 landed the airliner at Gander on Canada's east coast while wearing breathing masks. "Due to the smoke, the cockpit crew decided to re-route the plane to Newfoundland and landed there safely," a spokesman said. Destination Florida Tuesday's trans-Atlantic flight LH 464 from Frankfurt was en route to Orlando in the southern state of Florida. "Die Welt" said emergency exits were not activated and it quoted passengers as saying the pilots had kept them well briefed during the landing, described by Lufthansa as "precautionary." Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) welcomed 2.1 million passengers throughout September, marking an increase of 5% on September 2015. Since the beginning of the year, passenger traffic has grown 6% from the same period last year, with 18,528,723 passengers between January 1 and September 30. Total departures numbered 352,067, which signify a 10.1% increase on September 2015. Passenger traffic to India grew 10% on 2015, which maintained its position as the top destination, with 355,328 passengers throughout September. Passengers to Qatar totaled 70,627, representing an increase of 18.4% compared to September 2015. Saudi Arabia rose to become the third busiest destination, with traffic to and from the country increasing by 19%. Traffic to and from Egypt rose by 37.9% to 57,885 passengers. Alitalia has successfully completed a major IT system upgrade which is set to generate a substantial increase in additional revenues for the airline and improve customer service. The introduction of the new system is part of the overall business restructuring plan to place the airline on a sustainable commercial platform. All of Alitalia’s reservations, check-in and critical airline operations were switched at the weekend from Arco to global technology company, Sabre (SABR). The new system will allow Alitalia to deliver new services and an improved customer experience to air travelers, and link in more effectively with the Etihad Airways Partner (EAP) airlines, most of which use Sabre’s industry-leading technology. Combined the EAP airlines constitute Sabre’s largest group of airline customers in the aviation industry. Alitalia expects to increase revenues, estimated at some €100m per year according to Sabre benchmarks, driven by the sale of new ancillary services, optimizing inventory and availability, and also the introduction of new routes.
