What The Singapore Airshow Is Telling Us About The Aviation Industry The biennial Singapore Airshow came to a close yesterday. As one of the largest aviation events in Asia, the airshow is a major event for deal making in the aviation space. In the last Singapore Airshow back in 2014, there were 20 deals announced, amounting to more than S$40.5 billion in value. But, the most recent edition of the trade show only concluded with 11 deals worth a total of S$17.9 billion. What does this mean for some of Singapore’s largest aviation-related companies like SIA Engineering Company Ltd (SGX: S59) and Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd(SGX: S63)? In the 2016 Singapore Airshow, SIA Engineering, which focuses on aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), announced that it had been appointed by Rolls-Royce as an On-Wing Services Provider for the Trent family of engines, a type of engine that powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. In a separate announcement made by SIA Engineering which may or may not be linked to the Singapore Airshow, the company announced that it will be forming a new joint venture with Airbus S.A.S. to provide airframe maintenance, cabin upgrade, and modification services for Airbus A380, A350 and A330 aircraft. The joint venture’s clients will be airlines in the Asia-Pacific region. For me, the deals that SIA Engineering had struck indicates the strong position that both Singapore and the company have in being the partner of choice for aircraft manufacturers when they are choosing a hub for maintaining their planes for customers.

But, the huge reduction in deal value this year also highlights a key risk for the company. News reports have indicated that aircraft sales in the commercial sector are weak this year in the Singapore Airshow. Given SIA Engineering’s line of business, with fewer new planes coming into the market, the growth for the company in the near-future might be limited. The story is quite different for ST Engineering, which does plenty of defence-related engineering work: Defence sales in the 2016 Singapore Airshow are up. With the increasing threat of terrorism and other multi-lateral disputes between nations, many governments are beefing up their defenses. All these may be good news for ST Engineering. The company took the chance at the trade show to showcase many of its innovative products, such as its drones, new military wearables, and unmanned vehicles. Although no major deals for ST Engineering were announced during the show, any trend of increased military spending in the region is likely to be a tailwind for the company. Foolish Summary The current market seems mixed for the aviation companies in Singapore. But, the Singapore government is determined to make the country an important regional air hub. As Singapore becomes an even more important destination in the international aviation industry, there could be plenty of growth potential for Singapore-based aviation companies such as SIA Engineering and ST Engineering. That being said, whether the two companies can turn the opportunity to profitability is another story altogether. Lufthansa has published more details on its forthcoming Airbus A350-900 fleet, which will begin operating from January 2017. The German carrier says it will base its first ten A350s at Munich airport, with Delhi and Boston ”expected to be the first destinations“. Lufthansa will not offer a first class cabin on the newgeneration Airbus aircraft. Instead they will be configured with 48 business class seats, 21 in premium economy and 224 in economy, for a total of 293 seats. The carrier’s A350-900s will gradually replace Lufthansa’s A340600 fleet – the airline has a total of 25 A350s on order, and says that ”The deployment of the remaining 15 aircraft has yet to be decided“. Lufthansa recently took delivery of the world’s first Airbus A320 neo aircraft – for a review of the aircraft’s first commercial flight between Frankfurt to Munich

Now Taking Off: TAP Portugal Daily Flights to JFK, Boston TAP Portugal will launch new daily nonstop flights from its Lisbon hub to New York’s JFK and Boston Logan International airports. The Gateway consortium, led by JetBlue and Azul founder David Neeleman, holds a 61 percent stake in Portugal’s flag carrier. The deal includes a new codeshare that will offer TAP access to 20 U.S. cities via JFK, Boston and Newark. TAP will operate from JetBlue’s Terminal 5 at JFK and Terminal C at Logan. The Portuguese carrier also serves Lisbon from Miami and Newark and Oporto from Newark. Neeleman said the new service offers great possibilities for TAP. ”We think that TAP can become an alternative way to get to Europe,“ he said. ”There are 33 cities that connect easily to Lisbon from JFK and Boston. Connections from Lisbon are especially advantageous to cities in southern Italy, France and Spain.“ Boston has a large Portuguese population, said Neeleman. ”TAP pulled out of Boston in 2000 and JFK airport in 2002,“ he said. ”The difference this time is the codesharing deal we have with JetBlue that will feed these flights.“ Although TAP Portugal is part of the Star Alliance, it’s not part of the joint venture with United, said Neeleman. ”Our relationship is more beneficial with JetBlue than what we have with United out of Newark,“ he said. ”We can reach 20 JetBlue cities out of Boston and JFK.“ The Gateway consortium decided to buy a majority stake in TAP because it hadn’t reached its full potential, said Neeleman. ”The airline had been government-owned since 1974 and has been around 70 for years. We saw a lot of potential,“ he said. ”TAP serves 12 cities in Brazil, so there were synergies with Azul. It was natural, and we felt like we could make a difference and get it back to profitability.“ The deal was completed in November 2015. ”We’re only in the first 100 days, but we’ve restructured the Lisbon hub, pulled unprofitable routes, added Boston and JFK and now run 18 flights a day between Oporto and Lisbon,“ he said. The Portuguese government recently increased its stake in TAP to 50 percent. ”The stake is not really an economic interest. It’s more about their interest in oversight,“ he said. ”They have more seats on the board, but we still have management control over the airline and it’s still private.“

Finally, TAP has just launched a new stopover program, said Neeleman. ”People hear about Portugal and say they want to visit, but always end up going to larger cities in Europe,“ he said. ”Lisbon is so far out of the way, but there are better connection because you don’t have to backtrack going around Europe.“ Travelers can spend up to three nights in Lisbon, said Neeleman. ”And we’ll even fly you to Oporto for free, then you can go on to where you want to go in Europe,“ he said. ”We’ll have 30 departures a week between the U.S. and Portugal. It’s a great place to visit.“ The new daily Boston service starts on June 11 and the new JFK daily flights commence on July 1. Both will be operated with new Airbus A330s to be delivered in June, boosting its fleet to 20 aircraft. TAP’s new executive class cabin has 20 lie-flat seats, while the economy cabin offers 34-inch seat pitch in economy plus and a 31-inch pitch in economy. The A330 will also have Panasonic’s EX-3 inflight individual on-demand entertainment system. The plan is to retrofit the entire A330 starting in 2017. What will TAP look like a year from now? ”I hope it will be profitable. And we have a bunch of new onboard products coming in, that will make us a world-class airline,“ said Neeleman. ”If you want to go to Europe to cities we serve, we want you to look at us as an attractive option.“
