www.ainonline.com Boeing Upbeat on 737 Supply Chain Recovery Boeing continues to see “positive signs” emanating from its 737 supply chain, following an encouraging month of September in which it delivered 61 of the narrowbodies. Speaking during the company‟s third-quarter earnings call with investment analysts, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg sounded upbeat on the performance of the 737‟s suppliers in recovering from a miserable summer, as scores of airframes collected outside its plant in Renton, Washington, awaiting completion. Planning to continue to exceed its benchmark delivery rate of 52 per month in the fourth quarter, Boeing still expects to meet its guidance for the year as it prepares to increase its rate to 57 per month in 2019. Muilenburg specifically noted a recovery in fuselage section deliveries from Spirit Aerospace, while reporting significant progress in terms of CFM Leap-1B engine supply. “We now have fuselages being delivered to purchase order plans and we‟re also seeing engine recovery,” said Muilenburg. “And while we still have some work to do there, we‟re anticipating engine recovery towards the end of the year. You can see that reflected in deliveries as well; the strong September deliveries give us building confidence in the recovery, and we have not changed our year-end guidance for deliveries.” For next year, Muilenburg referenced applying “lessons learned” from the last rate hike to 52 per month, including earlier staffing increases and more in-depth monitoring of supply chain health. He also noted differences in the circumstances surrounding the next planned hike compared with those that negatively affected the last increase.

“As we stepped to 52 a month, we also had major model mix changes,” explained Muilenburg. “Roughly half of the airplanes this year are NGs and half are Maxes. As we get to next year and towards the 57-a-month rate break, we‟ll be almost entirely Maxes by the point. So the model mix challenge will not be as difficult.” Though not every airplane emerging from the factory is necessarily ready for delivery, Muilenburg reported seeing “more and more” airplanes rolling out complete and fewer AOGs on the ramp. “If I look at every element of the recovery...across that entire set of metrics they‟re all trending in the right direction,” he said. “We‟re going to stay very, very focused on it...and get the production line back to full health.”

www.ch-aviation.com India's Jet Airways attracts bids for loyalty programme Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) has attracted the interest of six or seven potential investors for its loyalty programme Jet Privilege, the Economic Times has reported. All potential bidders want to hear more about the airline's planned restructuring first before committing to a deal. "They are satisfied with Jet Privilege but want to know the future of its airline parent, its plans of survival and business transformation," a source said. According to another unnamed source, all potential bidders are "global private equity firms". Among them are TPG Capital and Blackstone. The carrier is trying to divest from its 49.9% share in its loyalty programme in order to raise cash to improve liquidity. The remaining 50.1% share is owned by Etihad Airways, which also holds a 24% stake in Jet Airways itself. Jet Privilege has some 8.5 million members and posted a net profit of INR1 billion rupees (USD13.6 million) in the Fiscal Year 2018. Jet Airways is expecting final bids until the end of October 2018. Separately, Live Mint has reported that Jet Airways was looking at selling and leasing back all sixteen aircraft it currently owns. The transaction could net some USD800 million for the cash-strapped carrier. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Jet Airways owns three A330-200s, two B737-800s, one B737-900, and ten B777-300(ER)s. It leases a further 101 aircraft. Earlier this summer, the carrier was reported as having enough cash only to survive another two months. As of June 2018, Jet Airways had a gross debt of INR86.2 billion rupees (USD1.2 billion), while its accumulated losses stood at INR108.8 billion rupees (USD1.5 billion).

jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) has formally cancelled twenty-four EMB-190 jets still on order from Embraer following an earlier decision to go with the A220-300 for its regional jet renewal plans. In July, the New York-based carrier signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Airbus-controlled C Series Aircraft (CSALP) for sixty firm-ordered A220-300 – formerly CS300s – with options for an additional sixty aircraft of the type. Once deliveries begin in 2020, the A220s will replace jetBlue's existing fleet of sixty EMB-190s whose flying will be reduced from 2020 onwards before being phased out completely by around 2025. In its 3Q18 update, Embraer said that aside from these 24 jets, it had also removed another 110 jets from its order backlog. Of those 110, 100 are EMB-175 E2s that were ordered by SkyWest Airlines (USA) (OO, Salt Lake City) but whose delivery is subject to changes being made to capacity scope clauses currently in effect in US mainline carriers' collective labour agreements. Given the conditionality of the order, Embraer has therefore decided to remove it from its backlog so as to comply with IFRS accounting standards. However, it said Skywest remains committed to its EMB-175-E2 order and that its terms remain unchanged. The remaining 10 jets were cancellations from various other unspecified customers.

Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) has engaged Airbus and Boeing over its plans to find a replacement for its A340 fleet. Sources familiar with developments told Bloomberg that the German carrier is looking to acquire "about 20" jets and is looking at the A350 from Airbus and the B787 from Boeing. As part of the talks, Lufthansa is also looking for assistance in the disposal of the A340s which currently number fifteen A340-300s and seventeen A340-600s. A deal may be finalized in the next few months, the sources added. Lufthansa currently twenty-five A350-900s (of which eleven have been delivered) on order from Airbus with options for thirty more. It is also the launch operator for the B777-9, due to deliver in 2020, and has thirty-four on order from Boeing.

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) has launched its maiden transpacific freighter route, connecting Macau Int'l with each of Los Angeles Int'l and México City Int'l. Macao itself is also a new destination for the Qatari carrier's dedicated cargo unit. Qatar Airways Cargo already operates freighter services to Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, and Hong Kong Int'l in Greater China. Flights to from Doha Hamad Int'l to Macao will operate 2x weekly onboard B777-F aircraft. The Boeing freighter will then continue to Los Angeles and Mexico City and then onwards to Liège before returning to Doha. According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Qatar Airways Cargo currently offers services to both Los Angeles and Mexico City over the Atlantic only, operating from Doha via either Luxembourg, Zaragoza, or Liege.

He has said that Qatar might be leaving in 2019, due to „differences‟ with an American Airline within the Alliance. What is going on in the Oneworld Alliance? Turns out that the politics within the alliance are more turbulent. and critical than originally thought. Oneworld is one of the big three airline alliances, next to SkyTeam and Star Alliance. This alliance was founded by British Airways, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. In the past 19 years, it has grown to a size of 13 member airlines. OneWorld‟s slogan is “An alliance of the world‟s leading airlines working as one.” But, it seems that not everyone gets along, with Qatar‟s CEO claiming that „one of the founders‟ wants them out. “In June 2013, we joined the oneworld [alliance]. We were invited by American Airlines and [UK-based] British Airways together. Unfortunately, the same airline that invited us is now talking against Qatar Airways,” – Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group CEO Middle East airlines have not been popular with the US legacy carriers of United, American, and Delta. This is because the Gulf airlines in the past have been heavily subsidized, with the oil-producing nations giving „free‟ fuel to their national carriers whilst at the same time manipulating the fuel price. Of course, Qatar argues against this, claiming that the airline is only owned by the government, not run by them. If the government wants to put further investment into the airline, then that should be completely allowed.

The whole purpose of an alliance is to build a web that passengers can traverse around the world. If you wanted to fly to Sydney from Germany, via Oneworld, you might fly Qatar to the Gulf before switching to Qantas. Well… you would have if Oneworld founder Qantas had not been preferring to support Emirates, a non-alliance member and also Qatar‟s competition, through code-share agreements and more. You can even use Qantas points for Emirates flights. However, it turns out that Qatar has been getting more passengers to feed to them by non-alliance members than within the network. By being part of a network, Qatar is likely forbidden from negotiating special deals with synergetic airlines, simply because they are not part of the alliance (Or worse still, part of a rival). When the founding members of the alliance are on the other side of the world (America, England, Hong Kong, Australia), they might not have the Doha based carriers‟ interests at heart. What is the Oneworld Alliance reaction? It seems that the big carriers have little to say, with only one comment so far. “As in most families, there are times where members of our alliance have differences on specific points from time to time. What this means is that Qatar (The airline) can run routes from the US to other destinations, such as the UK, Europe and more, without having to go via Doha (The nation‟s capital). Include the fact that Qatar is investing into other carriers (Such as Air Itay) and Qatar stands to gain so much by leaving the alliance. They would be able to dictate their own terms, invest in further airlines and undercut their old partners. Or invest in their partners, with Qatar now owning 20% of IAG (British Airways and Iberia). If they left the alliance, it might put them at odds with their own investments if not carefully managed. With such a huge fleet of over 200 aircraft, it seems Qatar has nothing to gain by staying in Oneworld.
