1 http://7days.ae/ Just how did fatal flydubai flight FZ981 crash? The report by Russian authorities investigating the cause of a flydubai crash in southern Russia last month provides a key insight into what went wrong. 7DAYS examined the report and showed it to one UAE-based expert. Here are the key findings: Moments before the flight from Dubai to Rostov-on Don crashed into the runway, the plane was thrown off balance by the excessive pressing of a switch used to stabilise the plane, the IAC‘s preliminary report revealed. The result causing the aircraft to nosedive, according to one pilot and aviation consultant. During a third attempt at landing at Rostov-on-Don in the early hours of March 19, the pilot held down the control column, bringing the aircraft to a nose down descent, while pressing a trim switch to level out the plane at the same time, the report said. ―It‘s like a see-saw,‖ said Karim Hijazi from Synapsis aviation consultants in the UAE. ―When you press the switch it operates the back of the aircraft moving the stabiliser up or down, changing the angle of the stabiliser. ―Normally you do small adjustments, for one second or two seconds. But what happened appears to have happened is that for 12 seconds the aircraft was completely out of balance, nose down,‖ Hijazi said, before adding that any attempt to level the aircraft would be obsolete against the powerful force of the stabiliser switch on board. The command would have put the aircraft into a 50 degree-angle, he suggested. ―This is a very critical stage in the flight, the few seconds where no matter what, you‘re very much focused in what you do.‖ He also dismissed the possibility that the button could have been pressed for that period accidentally.

2 http://7days.ae/ ―In my opinion it‘s either manual input for 12 seconds or it could have been that for some reason the switch got stuck,‖ he said. When this happens it‘s called a ‗trim runaway‘, Hijazi explained, adding that there are protocols in place allowing the pilot to disconnect the stabiliser engines if this happens. He said it is part of each pilot‘s basic training. ―The weather forecast for Rostov-onDon and along the flight was not inhibitive and was consistent with meteorological flight rule regulations,‖ added the report. Investigators will now continue the next stages of the investigation during which time further examinations of the Boeing 737-800 systems and psycho-emotional state of the crew would be concluded, the report said. Meanwhile, people are continuing to pay their respects on the memorial website, withgreatsadness.com, set up recently by flydubai. One tribute, posted by Diana on Friday, read: ―That‘s a very big tragedy, they will always be in hearts and memories, stay strong.‖ Russian Aviation body‘s recommendations Safety recommendations by Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee to flydubai in the wake of the crash: The investigators recommended all flight and maintenance staff working on the airline‘s Boeing 737-800‘s be informed about the accident. Additional training with manually-operated aborted landings in various conditions should also be introduced. The same recommendation was made for flight simulator training. The flydubai plane crashed after a second manual aborted landing. The investigators also recommended that flydubai ―repeatedly study and analyse‖ safety recommendations made in the reports about the fatal Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 in Kazan, Russia in 2013 and Armavia Flight 967 in Sochi, Russia in 2013. Both flights crashed after an attempted aborted landing. Investigators also recommended that flydubai repeatedly studies ways to prevent accidents and incidents involving aborted landings developed by the French air accident investigation agency BEA. Statement from flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith: Flydubai welcomes the publication of the Interim Report (Preliminary Reference Information) on Accident Investigation by the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC). We would also like to thank the investigating authorities for their continued commitment to investigate this tragic accident. With regard to the five initial flight safety recommendations flydubai has, as part of the ongoing communications within our emergency response plan, continued to update our crew and engineers with the information published by the IAC. With regard to the recommendations two and three, these same procedures for goaround and flight simulator training have been in place since the airline was launched in 2009. In relation to the fourth and fifth recommendation, as standard practice we review safety recommendations in the industry.

This was disclosed by the airline's chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker during a news conference on the first day of Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. The airline will also starts around 19 new routes during the year, Al Baker informed. He also mentioned that the airline's first financial results will be announced in the next two months. "I know the profit but I am not in a position to share it before the audit is completed," he said. "I hope we will be in a position to publish them sometime in June," he added. Talking about Qatar Airways operations with its Saudi Arabian carrier Al Mahar, he said: "Unfortunately, we are still in the process of certification and we hope that we will be able to get an agreement with the authorities in order for us to start operating these flights." The chief executive said Saudi Arabia is an important market for Qatar Airways and the authorities were showing an interest in bringing more competition to the market. He also talked about Qatar Airways interest in ailing Italian airline Meridiana. "Yes we are in advanced negotiations with Meridiana and we hope we will conclude but we will not sign anything unless we are absolutely certain our partnership will be a success," he said. He indicated that negotiations with employees were continuing, particularly with regards to staff reductions. "Initially there will be some pains and they have to accept this," he added. Al Baker also announced the airline's continued evolution of customer experience that the airline is committed to. Key elements of this transformation include the opening of a luxurious new lounge in Dubai International Airport. "The Qatar Airways customer experience has been the cornerstone of our business from day one; it is the driver behind our success and a key point of difference amongst our peers in the industry," he said. "By continuing to evolve the experience we offer to our customers we stay ahead of the curve, whether we do so by introducing the newest aircraft to our fleet, collaborating with Airbus to develop the next generation of aircraft, introducing new destinations, improving our on-ground offering with exclusive lounges, in the air with Wi-Fi and through our product with totally unique designs. Qatar Airways as a brand represents innovation and evolution in the industry, and we are proud to be the flag-bearers of change."

http://www.ejinsight.com/ India planning to ease aviation rules for international flights India is making it easier for domestic airlines to offer international services. That means domestic carriers will not have to wait at least five years to qualify for an overseas permit, Bloomberg reports. The move will benefit the local affiliates of Singapore Airlines Ltd. and AirAsia Bhd., three people familiar with the process said. The cabinet may consider the new policy as early as Wednesday although an official agenda isn‘t ready yet and delays are usual. The government is debating whether to keep the minimum number of aircraft an airline should have in its fleet at 10 or 20, they said. Existing rules mandate that airlines must have a fleet of 20 planes to fly abroad. A change will enable carriers to start flying overseas immediately if they meet the minimum fleet requirement, dealing a blow to airlines such as Interglobe Aviation Ltd.‘s IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd., which had previously opposed such a relaxation of what is locally known as the 5/20 rule. Singapore Air started flying domestic flights in India through a joint venture known as Vistara. AirAsia, the region‘s biggest discount carrier, began domestic Indian flights in June 2014. A draft of the new civil aviation rules released in October said the 5/20 rule could be kept, amended or scrapped. India is evaluating as many as 15 variations to amend the rule, R.N. Choubey, the top bureaucrat in the aviation ministry said March 16. Incumbent carriers like market leader IndiGo and SpiceJet have said scrapping the rule unduly favors new airlines. Businessman Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Sons Ltd. that partners both Vistara and AirAsia India, has said the rules were ―reminiscent of the protectionist and monopolistic pressures by vested interests who seem to fear competition‖.

Travel Tip: Airlines Start to Auction Off Seat Upgrades If you‘re a frequent flyer, you know it‘s all about the seat upgrade. We do everything we can, including using frequent flyer miles, to try and get into the front cabin. But we also know it‘s becoming harder and harder to get any kind of upgrade. Now airlines are finding another way to handle upgrades. They‘re auctioning them off. More than 30 airlines around the world are offering auctions just to upgrade to first or business class. There are even auctions for premium economy seats. For some smart flyers, it might actually be worth it. A bid for $430 can get you a seat in business class on KLM. The actual cost of that ticket would be several times that amount. Delta Air Lines reports that 57 percent of its first class seats are now occupied by people who paid their way to sit there—as opposed to a free upgrade. Then there‘s perhaps the best auction idea. With some airlines you get a seat in economy. Not for your seat or an upgrade, but to ensure that the seat next to you is actually empty.

https://www.ttgmedia.com Lufthansa ‗in talks‘ with Thomas Cook over potential Condor deal

According to news agency Reuters, talks have been going on since at least January.

The revelation follows a similar story from earlier this month, which indicated that Lufthansa was interested in Scandinavian carrier SAS and Brussels Airlines. Sources told Reuters that the outcome could be some form of market co-operation where it could buy capacity on Condor‘s flights; an acquisition of a minority stake; or a complete takeover. Lufthansa relaunched Eurowings last year as a low-cost carrier in a bid to compete with the likes of easyJet and Ryanair.
