Air Tanzania Introduces Cross-Continent Flight Air Tanzania Co. Ltd. will fly to Mumbai three times a week starting in September, it’s first flight outside the continent, after taking delivery of a Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner next month, the Dar es Salaam-based Daily News newspaper reported, citing Commercial and Business Development Director Patrick Ndekana. Tanzania is revamping its erstwhile struggling national carrier after investing in new jets and introducing more flights to African destinations. Earlier in June, Finance and Planning Minister Philip Mpango said ATCL will acquire three new aircraft in the 2018-19 financial year to add to the current fleet of four jets.

U.S. Airlines Could Lose Passengers Over Taiwan Defiance With a month to go before the world’s major airlines must comply with Beijing’s order to recognize Taiwan as part of China, U.S. carriers risk flying fewer mainland passengers by staying defiant. While Japan Airlines Co., ANA Holdings Inc. and Australia’s Qantas Airways Ltd. have changed how they described Taiwan on their websites, Delta Air Lines Inc. and American Airlines Group Inc. are among the last few standing, calling the island a region or country. They could face measures such as air-traffic control delays, ramp inspections, hold-ups at immigration and security checks, according to Robert Mann, the New York-based head of aviation consultancy R.W. Mann & Co. “The present trade regime and rhetoric is getting ugly, and it may get far uglier,” Mann said. “Short of an outright ban, the Chinese could make it commercially, operationally difficult for U.S. carriers arriving and departing Chinese airports.” Delta and American Airlines, which have until July 25 to fall in line on the Taiwan issue, say they are consulting with the U.S. government even as the White House dismissed the order as “Orwellian nonsense.” A representative for United Continental Holdings Inc., the U.S. carrier with the most services to mainland China, declined to comment. The diplomatic spat comes amid a worsening tit-for-tat trade war between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. Chinese Airlines Become Collateral Damage in Trade War With U.S. The major long-term threat is to the establishment of a China-U.S. “open skies” aviation treaty, a pre-condition for code-share alliances that can pass muster with antitrust agencies, Mann said.

There are more options in China’s playbook to inflict pain, said Corrine Png, chief executive officer and founder of Crucial Perspective Pte., a Singapore-based research firm focused on transportation.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

3 “The U.S. carriers have much larger exposure to China routes and therefore have more to lose by offending China,” she said. China’s government could prompt travelers from the mainland to boycott American airlines and could also impose tourism curbs by approving fewer package tours -- a tactic that proved effective against South Korea when the country decided to deploy a U.S. missile shield last year on its soil despite China’s complaints. Png said. China, which says its relations with the U.S. rest on American acceptance of its “one-China” claim, has been lately angered by growing ties between the Trump administration and the island’s government headed by proindependence President Tsai Ing-wen. In March, Xi warned that efforts to widen divisions with Taiwan would be “punished by history.” As U.S. Confronts China on Trade, Taiwan Tensions Quietly Build In April, the Civil Aviation Administration of China sent a letter to more than 40 foreign airlines, telling them that they shouldn’t place China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on an equal footing, and must refer to “China Taiwan” or the “China Taiwan region.” Maps must display the territories in the same color as mainland China and the websites can’t place Taiwan in other categories such as Southeast Asia, it said. After some operators sought more time, the deadline was extended to July 25. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in May that it was part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies, which “will be resisted.”

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

4 “We are reviewing the Civil Aviation Administration of China’s request and will remain in close consultation with the U.S. government throughout this process,” Delta said in an emailed statement. American Airlines is also consulting with the U.S. government, said Shannon Gilson, a spokeswoman

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

5 The U.S. carriers aren’t alone. A spokesman for Air India, which flies passengers to Taipei through a code-share agreement with EVA Air and lists Taiwan as a country on its website, said it was a decision for the government to make. India’s foreign ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar didn’t respond to a request for comment. A representative for CAAC referred to previous statements regarding Taiwan. A letter dated April 25 cited regulations that could subject non-compliant airlines to punishments including curtailment of resources and administrative licenses. The Tsai government in Taiwan isn’t happy either as airlines bow to China’s wish. The island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on international governments and companies to bravely resist China’s “unreasonable request,” according to a statement from the ministry on June 18. “This isn’t just a cross-strait issue, it is a threat to the international democratic community,” Taiwan Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang said in a text message the following day. Airbus, Thai Airways to form MRO joint venture Airbus and Thai Airways, the country’s national airline, have agreed to establish a joint venture (JV) to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services at a civil-military airport near the country’s eastern seaboard. The proposed JV will be located at the U-Tapao International Airport, with Thai Airways officials confirming to Jane’s that the MRO facility is expected to be operational by 2021. A spokesperson from Airbus told Jane’s that the two sides will “now proceed to finalise the joint venture agreement and incorporate the company”. Given U-Tapao’s role as a joint-user facility, building MRO support for both sectors is part of the Thai government’s project to develop the airport, although the new Thai Airways-Airbus JV will be geared towards supporting commercial jet airliners.

A closer look at Swoop Airlines’ maiden voyage out of Edmonton Swoop Airlines flight 102 took off from Edmonton International Airport on Monday morning, heralding what analysts say is a new era of cheap travel for Albertans. A wholly owned subsidiary of WestJet, Swoop — an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) that has frosted everything from its logo to its planes in millennial-pink — launched out of Hamilton last week with much fanfare. No-frills flying has become commonplace in Europe, but is still a novel concept in western Canada. So when the company announced its first Edmonton flight, StarMetro booked me a seat to find out what all the fuss was about: What does flying on the cheapest airlines in the country really mean? And cheap it is — at least cheaper than traditional alternatives. On its website, Swoop advertises ultralow fares that mean a base fare gets you a seat on an airplane. And just a seat on an airplane. Everything else, from a checked bag to a bottle of water, will cost you. Booking just five days before the scheduled date of departure, we managed to snag a return ticket from Edmonton to Hamilton for just over $400. In my experience, it’s usually double that amount to fly from Alberta to Ontario.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

2 On departure day, it took me a while to locate the airline’s checkin desks, at the far-end of the departures lounge of the Edmonton airport. Since the company is new, the airport still needs to create way-finding signs featuring the bright pink Swoop logo, one airline agent told me. Once at the desk, I queued up behind families with strollers, students and holidaygoers. Quite a few passengers had arrived early, in case there were any snags on launch day. “We came a little bit earlier, just not knowing what would happen,” said Imran Qureshi, an Edmonton man who was seeing off his wife and their two kids.

The 10 best airlines, ranked by free snacks

Unless you're a professional masochist, there are very few good things about flying — especially if you're flying economy or basic economy. The only balm for your in-flight misery is often a single bag of pretzels and a half-can of soda. And that is why it's so devastating when the free snack and beverage offerings on your flight are... less than great. We want you to know what kind of snack situation (snacktuation) you're getting into when you fly, so we've evaluated and ranked each major U.S. airline by its complimentary snack and beverage offerings on domestic/North American flights. (We're sticking to the options for economy class, because that's where the snacks really count.) Remember: you can always ask for the full can of soda, even if they don't give it to you at first .

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

2 10. Allegiant Allegiant does not offer complimentary snacks or beverages on its flights. Also, it does not offer WiFi. Also, according to a FOIA request from 60 Minutes in April of this year, Allegiant flights are three-and-a-half times more likely to suffer an in-flight breakdown than flights operated by five of its competitors. But, hey, this is about snacks! 9. Spirit No free snacks. A wasteland. 8. Frontier Nothing is free. Your flight might be cheaper, though. Please pack a snack. 7. Southwest Southwest offers free peanuts and pretzels as well as the standard beverage service. Their coffee is from Community Coffee. It's all perfectly fine. Also, these cookies look good.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

3 6. Alaska Alaska Airlines offers a standard beverage service, Starbucks coffee, and free pretzels and cookies. Not bad. 5. United United has abandoned the stroopwafel and is dead to me. (They did backtrack on tomato juice, though — is there hope yet?) Okay, fine. You can read about its snack offerings here.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

4 4. Delta In its main cabin, Delta currently offers almonds, a pretzel-based snack mix, KIND Dark Chocolate Chunk bars, and Biscoff cookies. The greatest of these, of course, are the Biscoff cookies. (Ever had Trader Joe's cookie butter? They're that in solid form.) In the beverage department, they have Starbucks coffee and the standard soft drink selection. Not bad! 3. American Passengers on flights within North America get complimentary beverages (tea, coffee, juice, Coca-Cola products, etc.). The coffee is Illy, which is very good coffee. Best of all, though, American offers the aforementioned stroopwafel: two thin waffle cookies with a caramel sauce in between. The stroopwafel is the perfect morning plane snack, and here's why: when you receive your stroopwafel, you can place it atop the lid on your cup of Illy coffee. The caramel will melt slightly, and the cookie will become warm, rendering an already-delicious treat even better. Reader, I have bitten into the gooey center of a stroopwafel and felt my eyes fill with tears. And it wasn't because they were dry from plane air! 2. JetBlue JetBlue has good snacks, particularly on the savory side of things. Unfortunately, they do not have stroopwafels or Biscoff cookies, but they do have pretzels, PopCorners chips, TERRA chips, chocolate chip cookies, and, most importantly, Cheez-its. Their coffee is from Dunkin' Donuts. Does anyone have strong feelings about Dunkin' Donuts coffee? I do not. It is fine, and it tastes like coffee.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

5 Here's the magical thing, though. JetBlue is also home to one of the greatest phenomena of modern day air travel: the snack zone. (Technically, it is called the "Inflight Marketplace," but snack zone is a better name.) Available on longer domestic flights, the snack zone is an area between first class and coach where passengers can stop by and help themselves to more snacks and more drinks, even after the initial round of snacks and drinks has been served. The JetBlue flight from New York to LA is responsible for at least 75% of my Cheez-it consumption in the past year. Now, my body is composed of pure sodium! 1. Hawaiian Hawaiian Airlines is the only carrier on this list to offer a complimentary alcoholic beverage in the main cabin (a Koloa Breeze Rum Punch, according to a rep) on North American flights. Aside from that, they've got a standard beverage service, snack mix, and macadamia nut chocolate from Hawaiian Host or cookies from Honolulu Cookie Company, depending on from where your flight originates. Here's the kicker, though: Hawaiian serves complimentary meals to passengers in all cabins on transpacific flights. Could it finally be time to... get excited about airplane food? Damn. Hawaiian Airlines, you are powerful.
