Iraqi Airways suspends brawling pilots Iraqi Airways has suspended two pilots who engaged in a mid-flight brawl, and warned that they face a substantial punishment. While the flag-carrier has not specified the details – simply stating that the pilots “fought in the air” – it says that the ministry of transport has opened an investigation. “They have already been ordered to stop flying,” it says, adding that the pilots face “harsh” sanctions. Iraqi Airways says it is interested in transparency over the situation in order to protect its reputation. It has not confirmed the circumstances of the incident, but local reports indicate that the encounter took place on a Boeing 737.

China Airlines has revealed a special carbonfibre livery for its 14th and final A350-900. The SkyTeam alliance member says the aircraft, which will bear registration B-18918 (MSN 239), features elements of Airbus's house livery on the rear of the fuselage. Pictures released by Airbus show that the aircraft has already been painted in the livery. It is due for delivery in October. hina Airlines has painted two other A350s in special bird liveries. Embraer takes E2 on African tour Embraer is conducting an African tour with its reengined 190-E2 model, including demonstration flights for key E-Jet customer Kenya Airways. The twinjet (PR-ZGQ) had been displayed at the Farnborough air show in mid-July but subsequently flew to Algiers and Casablanca – the bases of Air Algerie and Royal Air Maroc. RAM is already using Embraer E-Jets as part of its fleet. The E2 demonstrator then flew via Accra – the home of another Embraer operator, Africa World Airlines, which uses ERJ-145s – to Nairobi. It performed a demonstration flight over the volcano Kilimanjaro for Kenya Airways, which has a fleet of 15 Embraer 190s. As the largest E-Jet operator in Africa, Kenya Airways highlighted the E2’s arrival with a high-profile event attended by Brazil’s ambassador to Kenya, Fernando Coimbra. Coimbra described the aircraft’s trip as a “landmark moment” for the Brazilian co-operation with the airline. Embraer has also flown the E2 to Mauritius – where Air Mauritius is reportedly considering a variety of types for regional fleet modernisation – and the South African hub of Johannesburg as part of the tour.

The company will be based in Ethiopia and will aim to become Africa's leading cargo logistics provider where, in light of the continent's rapid economic growth, the need for international forwarding and handling services has soared. Ethiopian Airlines will have a majority stake in the firm and will provide regulatory and operational support while DHL Global Forwarding will oversee air, ocean, and road freight connections between Ethiopia’s main trade hubs and the rest of the world. DHL veteran Pramod Bagalwadi will lead the venture in addition to overseeing the Industrial Projects Team for DHL in Sub-Saharan Africa and a strategic business partner in the region. “Logistics is key to support Africa’s fast economic growth and industrialization drive," Tewolde GebreMariam, CEO, Ethiopian Airlines Group, said. "Ethiopian has, therefore, partnered with DHL, which has a proven expertise and experience in the logistics sector, with a view to avail the right logistics solutions in terms of cost, time and quality. We have had a longstanding and mutually rewarding partnership with DHL, and with this JV we aim to make the country a logistics hub for Africa." AccorHotels has dropped plans to acquire equity in Air FranceKLM just under two months after they were first announced. On June 3, the hospitality chain said that as part of its strategy to enrich its range of services in the travel space, it, along with other unnamed French and European investors, had considered acquiring a minority stake in the Franco-Dutch carrier. In a filing to France's benchmark CAC 40 bourse this week, AccorHotels said that on further reflection, and likely as a result of Air France's ongoing leadership crisis, it had now abandoned those plans. "The Group remains convinced that a strengthened partnership between hotel companies and airlines offers significant value creation potential," it said. "However, given that required conditions for the acquisition of a minority stake in Air FranceKLM have not been met at this stage, AccorHotels has decided not to further pursue this opportunity." It had earlier been reported that AccorHotels and its associates had been looking into acquiring some or all of the French government's 14.3% stake in Air France-KLM.

Ryanair to cut Irish ops, move planes to Poland amid strikes Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l) has warned 100 pilots and 200 cabin crew based out of Ireland that they will face relocation to Poland or lose their jobs in October 2018 as strikes in the carrier's home market weaken its business there, Bloomberg has reported citing internal communication. The airline also said that it will reduce its Dublin Int'l-based fleet from the current thirty B737-800s to twenty-four in Winter 2018/19. The aircraft and the staff members will likely be relocated to Ryanair Sun (RR, Warsaw Chopin), Ryanair's Polish subsidiary currently operating leisure flights on behalf of local tour operators. The unit is mulling launching own scheduled operations in the future, ch-aviation understands from inside sources. CEO Michael O'Leary said during the quarterly investor call that Ryanair would likely base the first B737 MAX 200s out of Germany or Austria, or place them in Poland with Ryanair Sun to cater to the growing local outbound tourism market. The Irish LCC expects the delivery of the first five units of the type in Spring 2019. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, it currently has 135 B737 MAX 200s on order directly with Boeing. .

Regarding the carrier's long-term fleet plans, O'Leary said that Ryanair was tentatively interested in adding B737 MAX 10s after 2023. The carrier is involved in direct talks with both Boeing and Airbus, and is not currently negotiating any deals with the lessors. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Ryanair owns 417 out of its 444 currently used aircraft. The LCC would also look at adding second-hand B737 equipment in case of any airline bankruptcies in Europe which would free up the aircraft. O'Leary has long been predicting a collapse of Norwegian. The developments come amid a wave of strikes in a number of key markets for Ryanair, including Ireland and the Mediterranean countries. Labour issues have become a growing concern for Ryanair since September 2017, when the airline had to cancel thousands of flights due to the lack of available pilots. The crisis was, at the time, blamed on poor rostering. In January 2018, the airline reversed its long-standing policy and recognised pilot unions and has since been under growing pressure regarding pay and working conditions. South African Express (XZ, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) is set to resume commercial flight operations after the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) reinstated its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC). SACAA suspended SA Express’s AOC, AMO accreditation, and Certificates of Airworthiness (CoA) for nine of its 21 aircraft after an audit of the airline and its maintenance organisation uncovered severe cases of non-compliance that posed serious safety risks. Following a change in leadership and the drafting of a recovery plan, the regulator said on Thursday, July 26, that aside from the reinstatement of SA Express's AOC, it had also granted Certificates of Airworthiness for two of the carrier's aircraft, understood to be Dash 8-400s ZS-YBR (msn 4144) and ZS-YBU (msn 4344). South African Express has yet to comment on its next move or when it intends to resume services.

aaco.org DXB traffic rises to 43.7 million in H1 following 11.7 percent uplift in June Propelled by a double-digit surge in traffic in June, passenger numbers at Dubai International (DXB) topped 43.7 million in the first half of 2018, according to the traffic report issued today by operator Dubai Airports. DXB handled a total of 43,739,105 passengers during the first half, up 1.6% compared to 43,054,268 passengers recorded during the corresponding period in 2017. Monthly traffic in June surged 11.7% to 6,795,492 passengers compared to 6,084,674 recorded in June 2017. All the major markets registered robust growth during June with routes to CIS topping the list with traffic growing 50.6% followed by Eastern Europe (33.6%), Africa (20%) and North America (16.9%). In terms of passenger volume, India was the top destination country during the month with 968,931 passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia (504,968), the UK (454477), Pakistan (349,633) and the US (291,391). London topped the list top city destinations during the month with 280,941 passengers, followed by Mumbai (195,213 passengers) and New Delhi (173,820). Flight movements in June totaled 32,805 up 6.4% compared to 30,841 recorded during June 2017. The year to date flight movements were down 2% to 201,784 compared to 205,998 recorded during the first six months of 2017. The average number of passengers per flight during the month stood at 213 compared to 203 during the same month in 2017, a growth of 4.9%. Dubai International handled a total of 214,612 tonnes of cargo during June, a marginal contraction of 0.5% compared to 215,668 recorded during the month last year. The year to date cargo totaled 1,268,161 tonnes, compared to 1,302,911 tonnes, down 2.7%.

aaco.org Etihad Airways to introduce Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Moroccan capital Rabat
Effective 3 October 2018, Etihad Airways will introduce the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on its scheduled services from Abu Dhabi to Rabat, capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, replacing the Airbus A330-300 currently serving the route. To meet summer peak travel demand, Etihad Airways recently added a third weekly service to Rabat, operating every Saturday until 29 September.
