Why Boeing‟s jilting leaves Embraer bitter and frustrated Embraer‟s fierce reaction to prospective suitor Boeing‟s decision to bale from their intended commercial partnership is hardly surprising, given that the Brazilian airframer stands to lose heavily from the split. While the tie-up proposal, unveiled in late 2017, might have given the impression of a hastily-shoehorned response to Airbus‟s audacious swoop for the Bombardier CSeries programme, Boeing and Embraer already had collaborative interests, and a merger had genuine merits.

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫قطاع االمانة العامة بالشركة القابضة لمصر للطٌران‬

Boeing stated that the decision would “strategically align” with its commercial development, production and lifecycle services operations. A new joint venture, 80%owned by Boeing and named „Boeing Brasil – Commercial‟, would have handed the US airframer its own “highly complementary” presence in the regional aircraft sector with the re-engined E2 version of the Embraer E-Jet family, along with income from Embraer‟s services and support arm. Both Boeing and Embraer had separately put pressure on the CSeries, through trade and subsidy disputes. But Airbus‟s intervention – and Boeing‟s losing a highprofile trade case against Bombardier shortly afterwards – simply gave the CSeries, rebranded as the Airbus A220, additional momentum and the backing of a powerful partner. Embraer‟s E2 stood to gain a similar advantage under Boeing, capitalising on the US firm‟s global marketing network and heavyweight presence in procurement and cost negotiation. While the A220 has flourished under Airbus, the E2 has lost traction – total orders for the family have actually declined since 2017, even of circumstances.

discounting the specific US scope-clause peculiarities which led to the removal of 100 E175-E2s, the entire backlog for the variant, from Embraer‟s books. Absence of orders aside, the E175-E2‟s planned serviceentry date of 2021 reflects another key reason for Embraer‟s interest in the Boeing tie-up. While the manufacturer has been exploring a complementary turboprop development, it has been looking to Boeing to provide potential post-E2 openings for its engineering personnel. When the tie-up was initially disclosed, Boeing had just started delivering the 737 Max to customers and – with the Max the probable final iteration of the 737 – the airframer had been wrestling with options for a successor as well as a proposed New Mid-size Airplane to bridge between its single- and twin-aisle lines. Embraer would be able to offer technical specialists at a lower Brazilian cost base. But Boeing‟s aircraft development ambitions, already set back by the 13-month-and-counting grounding of the 737 Max, have been overturned by the calamitous impact of the coronavirus crisis, which has demolished the forecasts and assumptions behind the Boeing-Embraer proposal.

Not least, Embraer‟s share price has halved since the outbreak and its market capitalisation of around $1.1 billion is barely a quarter of the $4.2 billion that Boeing had been set to pay just for its 80% of the commercial aircraft venture. Embraer would have had a protective put option for its 20% balance. The tie-up had also been mired in regulatory uncertainty in Europe. Having lost its trade case against Bombardier by virtue of the CSeries having no overlap with the 737, Boeing has ironically been facing objections from the European Commission because the E-Jet family is viewed as a 737 competitor. Embraer appears to “exert some price constraint” on Boeing and Airbus, the Commission argues, even “beyond the boundaries” of the 100- to 150-seat sector, and the regulator has expressed “serious doubts” over the merger given that it could remove a “small but important” competitive influence. While a final ruling from the Commission has been pushed back, Boeing‟s withdrawal from the deal will practically render the decision academic. Even as it negotiated with Embraer, Boeing had been under financial pressure not only from the 737 Max

situation but also the broader fall in long-haul jet demand. It is cutting 787 production and orders for the 777X have barely moved in almost three years. But coronavirus has since exacerbated the situation, carving into the crucial single-aisle market while inflicting further damage to the weakened long-haul sector. Airbus is setting the level of A320 production back by eight years and – while that does not necessarily translate to the timeframe for industrial recovery – all bets on the future shape of air transport, the market for which is being torn down and potentially reconstructed, are essentially off. Under such conditions Boeing‟s revisting the strategic rationale for pursuing an expensive Embraer deal is hardly a shock, especially following the change in the US manufacturer‟s leadership in mid-January and its requests for US government funding. But the decision has – equally unsurprisingly – left Embraer frustrated, furious and bitter, its future direction another uncertainty among the myriad unleashed by the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Singapore Airlines Is Sending Airbus A380s To Alice Springs With an over-abundance of capacity during this climate of reduced travel, airlines the world over have grounded their larger aircraft. For many airlines, the Airbus A380 was first on the chopping block. Now, as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, airlines are moving their grounded aircraft into long-term storage. For Singapore Airlines, this means flying its A380s to Alice Springs, Australia.

Flight details The Simple Flying team recently spotted the A380s heading towards Alice Springs via information available on FlightRadar24.com. Having departed roughly one hour apart from each other, the four superjumbos, their flight numbers, and registrations are as follows: SQ8865 – 9V-SKT SQ8866 – 9V-SKW SQ8867 – 9V-SKY SQ8868 – 9V-SKZ Departing Singapore Changi (SIN), their destination is Alice Springs Airport (ASP). The actual flight time for the aircraft was just over five hours. The aircraft range between just three and eight years of age. What‟s in Alice Springs? Most avgeeks with a sense of geography will pick up on the significance of Alice Springs. Positioned in the absolute middle of Australia (the city is only a few hundred kilometers away from the accurate center of the continent), the area of Alice Springs is surrounded by the vast desert outback. This region and its arid climate are consistently dry with very little rain, no storms, and relatively low humidity.

13

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫قطاع االمانة العامة بالشركة القابضة لمصر للطٌران‬

‫تابع‬

Humidity is the main concern as its presence will bring about corrosion for aircraft components. This will not be a problem at ASP. While the temperature here has been known to reach some extremes, the electronics on board the aircraft should not be negatively affected. In fact, it is currently autumn in the southern hemisphere. As we into the Australian winter, we‟ll see milder temperatures in the mid to low teens for the next four or five months. Extreme heat won‟t be a problem in the short term. Another ideal aspect of regions like this is that the surface is solid enough to support the weight of these massive aircraft. Thus no paving is required of the vast landscape with little worry about damage to the ground. Another well-known region that supports “airplane boneyards” is the Mojave Desert in the United States, with sites in both California and Arizona.

IndiGo And Vistara Target June 1 Travel Resumption Date Both IndiGo and Vistara are now taking bookings for flights departing from June 1st. The India-based carriers were forced to ground most of their planes due to strict travel restrictions in the country amid the global health crisis. However, they are anticipating an improved climate in just over a month.

Does the government approve? LiveMint reports that the airlines‟ decision to start taking bookings from June comes just a week after the civil aviation ministry slammed them. The government group is unhappy about the carriers‟ premature actions. The companies were informed not to take domestic and

international bookings until further instructions as the coronavirus pandemic continued its spread. There is yet to be official confirmation about whether the firms now have the ministry‟s approval to restart these bookings. Reuters reports that Indian officials are yet to decide on when to lift or ease restrictions on domestic and international flights. The country made an early call to suspend most visas, effectively halting incoming international traffic. More travel restrictions such as domestic flight bans soon followed. However, the central government relaxed some restrictions for businesses yesterday. Therefore, carriers may feel that the overall restrictions easing is a sign that they will soon start flying again. Tickets available Nonetheless, as it stands, Vistara and IndiGo are selling tickets for operations starting in June. Tickets are going for a reasonable rate. For example, on June 1st, a Vistara flight to Kolkata from Delhi is available for ₹3,800 (US$50), while IndiGo is charging a little less at ₹3,400 (US$45).

Understandably, India‟s airlines are eager to get back in the skies. Suspensions have forced thousands of employees to have their jobs reduced or suspended over the past month. However, the operators should ensure that they have full government approval before taking bookings. Previously, carriers were booking flights without permission, which meant they were holding money for services that might not even go ahead. In many instances, the cash wasn‟t refunded as credit was given instead. This move forced customers to be locked to an airline for flights that they might not even need. This process also made it awkward for third-party agents that paid in advance for bulk bookings but could not receive refunds for canceled services. Tough situation Ultimately, the virus outbreak is still spreading throughout India. Therefore, it could be a “wait and see” approach regarding June flights departing. Furthermore, some operators such as GoAir and SpiceJet are planning to return on May 16th. Nonetheless, passengers should.

Covid casts pall on all segments of Indian aviation Travel, especially aviation, has been one of the hardest hit by the global outspread of covid-19, which has left thousands dead and millions sick globally. Cashstrapped Indian airlines have sought for a bail out package from the government, as the sector stares at job losses and closure. Most Indian airlines have not structured their business models to withstand even regular shocks, such as elevated fuel prices or economic downturns, let alone once-in-a-century events (like covid19), aviation consultancy firm CAPA India said in a recent report. As things stand, aviation sector in India remain grounded as the country battles to contain covid-19. We tally some of the numbers that stand out. ₹75 - ₹90 crore per day losses: Indian airlines are losing about ₹75-90 crore daily during the shutdown. All Indian major carriers have already started undertaking salary cuts for their employees to cut costs. However, until the cash inflows resume, the airlines will require funding support to meet their expenses. .

"Considering the operating expenses of the Indian aviation industry in FY2019, and that about 35-42% of their expenses are fixed in nature, it is estimated that the industry will report a net loss of about Rs. 75-90 crore per day of shutdown of operations." said Kinjal Shah, Vice President, ICRA $3.3- 3.6 billion loss incurred by the Indian aviation industry: Total losses to be incurred by Indian aviation sector, including airlines, airports, and ground handling industry during April- June 2020 quarter. While airlines are expected to lose $1.75 billion during the quarter, airports and concessionaires are expected to lose $1.501.75 billion during the period and ground handling companies are expected to lose $80-90 million. Airports to operate below 50% capacity 50%: Indian airports are likely to operate below 50% capacity till June due to travel restrictions to contain the spread of covid19. Even post the lift off the nation-wide lockdown passenger growth will face a sharp contraction considering the inhibitions of travelling anywhere till the pandemic scare has been settled fully in the domestic regions and internationally.

Bravado! IndiGo, Vistara, SpiceJet, GoAir start bookings violating govt orders

SpiceJet and GoAir have offered flights on various domestic routes, including the busiest Delhi-Mumbai route, starting May 16, whereas IndiGo and Vistara have opened booking from June 1 onwards Private airlines IndiGo, Spicejet, Vistara and GoAir have re-opened passenger bookings for flights starting midMay in violation of aviation regulator DGCA's explicit order. "...all airlines are hereby directed to refrain from booking tickets... Further, the airlines may note that they shall be given sufficient notice and time for restarting of operations. This is for strict compliance by all airlines," DGCA Deputy Director General Sunil Kumar wrote to all domestic and foreign airlines on April 19.

As per online travel portal MakeMyTrip, low-cost carriers SpiceJet and GoAir have offered flights on various routes, including the busiest DelhiMumbai route, starting May 16. The other two major carriers IndiGo and Vistara have started selling tickets from June 1.
