1 Emirates uses advanced navigation technology to increase cargo capacity to Kabul Emirates Flight Operations has developed a new navigation technique that allows the airline to carry additional cargo into Kabul International airport. The innovative missed-approach procedure developed by the airline has replaced an older technique that required cargo bound for Kabul to be offloaded in Dubai during low-cloud or poor visibility weather conditions at destination. Emirates operates a daily flight into Kabul International airport on its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and within the first three months of implementation, the new solution gave Emirates the capability for carrying an additional 250 tonnes of cargo into Kabul during low-cloud conditions. In addition to increased facilitation of trade to and from Afghanistan, the procedure has also resulted in more streamlined cargo operations to Kabul, increased customer satisfaction, and enhanced fuel efficiency. Kabul airport is situated in a wide valley at an elevation of 5,800 feet and is surrounded by mountains that are over 11,000 feet tall. The airport has a number of constraints associated with it because of the challenging terrain, Air Traffic Control )ATC( and other security requirements. Kabul airport’s primary Runway 29 has two established missed-approach* procedures with one of them requiring that an aircraft be able to climb at a steep angle when cloud cover is lower than 1,200 feet. Previously, whenever meteorological reports predicted cloud cover below this level at Kabul airport, cargo was offloaded in Dubai to make the aircraft lighter to ensure that in the event the aircraft had to execute a missed-approach* at Kabul airport, it could achieve the required climb gradient. However, this measure often resulted in cargo not arriving on time at Kabul leading to other associated costs for both Emirates as well as the customer.

2 In order to optimise cargo loads without compromising on safety, Emirates Flight Operations Support developed a new missed-approach navigation procedure with an easier climb gradient for Kabul airport’s Runway 29 taking advantage of the Boeing 777 aircraft’s superior navigational accuracy. The team worked with a specialist flight design agency, DFS Aviation Services, with regulatory credentials to analyse the terrain around the airport and develop a new procedure that could be implemented without delays in working with the local ATC. Once the initial design was ready, it was coded into the Emirates Flight Management System and tested extensively on flight simulators to confirm theoretical performance calculations as well as ensuring that the aircraft would indeed be able to clear any obstacles in the case of a go around. Finally, the Flight Operations Systems team then developed detailed training guidance in order to support pilots flying to the airport. Since implementation, Emirates has been able to carry significantly more cargo into Kabul leading to lower cost, more efficient operations including maintaining the ‘Delivered as Promised’ customer commitment, without compromising on safety or regulatory requirements. Optimising payload and minimising chances of aircraft return to Dubai has also resulted in important savings in fuel costs as well as lower carbon emissions. In addition to the new technique developed for Kabul airport’s Runway 29, Emirates has also used advanced technology to put together detailed guidance for pilots to operate to Kabul’s Runway 11 ensuring the highest possible levels of safety and efficiency. Emirates’ Flight Operations Support team have also used similar technology to successfully enhance operational efficiency at other airports such as Seychelles, Addis Ababa, Eldoret and Basra. Emirates has invested significantly in its capabilities- including in pilot training technology and equipment that allows it to derive maximum benefit from the modern aviation and ground technology systems without compromising safety. This helps Emirates improve the efficiency of its operations, reduce costs and environmental impact and at the same time improve customer satisfaction.

Iraqi Airways launches new destination to Munich Germany in March 2019
Iraqi Airways announced the launch of a new destination to Munich - Germany in early March 2019. It is the fourth destination for Germany, in addition to Berlin, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

South African airline Comair has begun its fleet renewal programme with the delivery of the first of eight Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.
The first aircraft is adorned with the livery of British Airways, for whom the Johannesburg-based carrier operates under franchise. Comair's existing all-Boeing fleet includes 18 737NG and seven 737 Classic aircraft, which are operated on the BA franchise and by its Kulula division. VietJetAir firms up order for 100 more B737 MAX
VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi) has announced it has signed a firm order agreement with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) for 100 B737 MAX jets. The order was originally announced as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the 2018 Farnborough Air Show and entails eighty B737-10s and twenty B737-8s. The LCC has a further 100 B737-8-200s on order for the US firm as well as 116 A321neo on order from Airbus. Concerning the Europeans, VietJetAir has an MOU for fifty more A321neo that was also signed during last year's edition of the Farnborough Air Show. Air Vanuatu orders four A220s
Air Vanuatu (NF, Port Vila) has confirmed it has ordered four A220s from C Series Aircraft. According to Airbus, the South Pacific carrier's purchase includes two A220-100s and two A220-300s. Deliveries are to start in June 2020. ”We are proud to be the launch airline in the South Pacific of the best-in-class Airbus A220. These aircraft will be deployed to operate on our current domestic and international routes, including our newly announced non-stop Melbourne-Vanuatu service, and will bolster plans to expand our network in the South Pacific,“ Air Vanuatu Chief Executive Officer Derek Nice said in a statement. 1 Nairobi considering renationalizing Kenya Airways The Kenyan Government may consider renationalizing Kenya Airways (KQ, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) as a means of protecting the ailing national carrier from increasing state-backed foreign competition. According to Bloomberg, Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett told a Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Public Works and Housing in Nairobi on Tuesday that the option was under consideration given Kenya Airways' continued losses. Founded in 1977 as a state-owned entity following the break-up of the then multinational East African Airways, Kenya Airways was privatized in 1996 in the hopes of transforming the airline into a competitive carrier. However, since that time, the carrier has had to cope with an increasing number of foreign operators eager to tap into Kenya's significant tourism market, as well as currency fluctuations and regional unrest. In 2017, as part of a debt-to-equity conversion plan, the state increased its overall shareholding from 29.8% to 48.9%. 2 According to her, the main hurdle to the renationalization plan is the airline's outstanding loans, for which it is currently renegotiated repayment schedules. The committee was due to have heard a presentation by Koimett and Kenya Airways chief executive, Sebastian Mikosz, over the carrier's plan to take operational control of Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport (JKIA). Under the deal, Kenya Airways will operate, maintain and develop the Nairobi gateway under a Privately Initiated Investment Proposal (PIIP). The aim of the project is to allow Kenya Airways to consolidate and entrench its status as JKIA's leading carrier thereby leading to cost efficiencies. With this in place, the airline believes it would be in a stronger position to compete with whollystate-owned rivals Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir, Air Tanzania, Uganda Airlines (tentatively) as well as Qatar Airways and Emirates. However, according to the official KBC broadcaster, the Public Investment Committee (PIC) last week said it will recommend that Parliament issues an injunction preventing the takeover until investigations are complete. Among the concerns cited are that the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) was unable to furnish Parliament with cabinet meeting minutes approving the now controversial takeover.
