Aviation industry must adapt and change: Etihad CEO James Hogan

DUBAI: Asserting the civil aviation industry must adapt and change, Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan has said partnerships and collaboration were the most tangible way to grow in the current competitive scenario. Addressing the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Aviation Day in Abu Dhabi, Hogan said Etihad Airways' successful partnership strategy could become a model for other players. He said that partnerships and collaboration were the most tangible way to grow in today's highly competitive business environment, providing consumers with greater choice and connectivity. "Ways of doing business globally have changed over the years and aviation, like many other industries, must adapt and change. In union there is strength and a shared vision. At Etihad Airways we have seen the results of working together which go well beyond commercial benefits," he said. Three years on, we have proved the sceptics wrong. Our organic growth has been supported by successful codeshare partnerships, minority investments in selected airlines around the world," said Hogan.

Etihad Airways currently operates a fleet of 119 aircraft flying almost 15 million passengers annually to 113 passenger and cargo destinations around the world.

http://gulfbusiness.com/ Kuwait Airways says looking for partners as expansion phase begins The airline's CEO said agreements with partners could go beyond code shares Kuwait Airways is heading into an expansion phase which will include partnerships, following a restructuring plan that helped it cut losses, an executive at the state-owned airline said on Tuesday. ―We have a whole plan until 2022 of different fleet leases, purchases … we’re restructuring our routes as we speak and reducing operational costs,‖ Kuwait Airways chief operating officer Kamil al-Awadhi told reporters. ―We’re looking at partners … that would give more access and passengers,‖ he said, saying agreements could go beyond code shares, whereby airlines extend networks by selling tickets for flights operated by partners, and vice versa. In November last year, Kuwait Airways agreed to purchase 10 Boeing 777-300s which it will start receiving in November 2016. Some of these will be used to replace retiring aircraft, while others will be used for expansion on long-haul routes. The airline may also exercise options to purchase five more planes. Kuwait Airways has made firm orders for Boeing 777s, Airbus A320neos and A350s and has options to buy more. With an expanding fleet, the carrier has recently added 50 flights. It now has about 32 aircraft and is looking at long-haul destinations on all continents as part of its growth plan. Al-Awadhi also said the expansion of the flight network might include routes that will not go through Kuwait but fly between other countries, a practice which requires socalled fifth-freedom rights. ―From 2018 it will be long-haul point-to-point … if you have the right freedoms, it doesn’t have to be from Kuwaiti market,‖ he said. Kuwaiti authorities will next month negotiate bilateral agreements for new routes the airline will launch, he said. Limited capacity at Kuwait International Airport has been a challenge for the carrier and its plans but the national carrier will move to a dedicated terminal by April 2017 to support its growth over the next five years, al-Awadhi said. Kuwait announced plans for a KD 1.312bn ($4.4bn) terminal that would lift airport capacity to 25 million passengers annually, but it has been hit by delays after a retendering process. Construction of the dedicated Kuwait Airways terminal, with a capacity of four to six million passengers a year will start next month. A long-debated privatisation plan stalled after the government revised plans that would have allowed a strategic investor to buy up to 35 percent of the airline. Parliament is expected to vote in the coming months on the new plan under which the government would retain 75 per cent with the rest for Kuwaiti citizens, airline employees and retirees.

Plane diverted to Belfast International Airport shortly after takeoff

A British Airways flight from Belfast City Airport to Heathrow was diverted to Belfast International Airport shortly after takeoff on Tuesday night after the pilot declared an emergency. A British Airways spokeswoman said it was diverted as a precaution. The plane, with 108 passengers on board, circled the International for a time before landing safely. One of those on board, Justin Hames, said passengers were told there was a problem with an engine. "As the wheels were going up, we heard the bang and that's pretty much it," he said. "To begin with they didn't say anything - they didn't want to cause any concern - and then they said it was a small problem with the engine." Alan Whiteside, operations director at Belfast International Airport, said: "Everything went smoothly, our own police and fire service on site here responded, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the PSNI, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service all attended as a routine. "But nobody was required to take any other action - the aircraft landed safely thankfully."

Stray Cat in Cairo Airport Irks Authorities Before Review

A stray cat is darting around Cairo's international airport, flustering authorities trying to catch it days ahead of a major international inspection. Security men were called in Wednesday to try to capture the rebellious feline, which had been fed by some passengers and staff in recent days but has now been declared persona non grata by authorities ahead of next week's International Civil Aviation Organization visit. As of the evening, the Egyptian Mau cat is still at large. It is not the first such incident involving animals at the Cairo airport — several days ago a stray dog wandered onto a runway, leading security men to chase it away.

EgyptAir mulls 10-year restructuring plan EgyptAir, the state-owned flag carrier, is in final stages of launching an overhaul and expansion plan that will propel it towards growth, its chairman said on Tuesday. ―We’re developing a 10-year restructuring plan which should be finalised by mid-December,‖ Sherif Fathi Attia, told media on the sidelines of an industry conference in Abu Dhabi. Attia is the chairman and chief executive of EgyptAir Holding. He is optimistic the plan will get government’s approval. The plan includes a network and fleet expansion and Attia said the airline could place aircraft orders in the first quarter of 2016. He said wide-body aircraft would account for 20 to 30 per cent of its total order. The airline has struggled to make a profit, facing setbacks during the 2008 financial crisis, which was followed by the turmoil after the overthrow of then president Hosni Mubarak. EgyptAir reported an annual loss of 2.20 million Egyptian pounds at the end of June 2011, the last results the group published since the revolution. The turnaround project, that could see changes in middlemanagement, aims for profitability at the end of the current fiscal year. Attia ruled out initial public offering for the company which had previously been under consideration. EgyptAir is part of a group of seven companies which includes EgyptAir Cargo. It currently has a fleet of about 66 aircraft and flies to about 162 countries. (Reuters/NAN)

http://atwonline.com/ Delta to end Dubai service; blames Gulf carriers Delta Air Lines announced Wednesday it will cease its Atlanta-Dubai service from Feb. 11, 2016, blaming ―overcapacity‖ from Gulf carriers for the pullout. The Atlanta-based carrier issued a statement saying the Boeing 777 aircraft used for Dubai flights will be ―redeployed to other transatlantic markets where it can compete on a level playing field that’s not distorted by subsidized state-owned airlines.‖ Delta has led a campaign, joined by American Airlines, United Airlines and some labor groups, to address what it says are billions of dollars of government subsidies given to state-owned Gulf carriers in violation of fair competition rules in the Open Skies between the US, the UAE and Qatar. The subsidy allegations and counter arguments are being examined by the US Departments of Commerce, State and Transportation. The US carriers are seeking government consultations on the UAE and Qatar Open Skies treaties. Delta said in its announcement today that its Dubai pullout decision ―comes amid overcapacity on US routes to the Middle East operated by government-owned and heavily subsidized airlines, and less than a month after Delta reduced service between the world’s busiest airport and the Middle East’s largest hub.‖ The SkyTeam carrier also said that between 2008 and 2014, ―about 11,000 daily seats were added between the U.S. and Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi—more than 95% of which are flown by Gulf carriers Emirates, Qatar [Airways] and Etihad Airlines. Of the 14 daily flights between the US and Dubai, only two are operated by US carriers. Despite the increase in passengers traveling on these flights, the number whose journeys actually originate or end in the Gulf has essentially remained flat.‖ The Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai hubs have transformed into major transfer points for passengers flying between Europe or the US and Asia-Pacific, but more predominantly to sub-Indian continent—or South Asia—destinations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives that US carriers mostly do not serve. Delta launched Atlanta-Dubai service in May 2007 with 5X-weekly flights, going to daily service in 2008. Qatar Airways, a oneworld alliance airline, has announced plans to launch flightsbetween Doha and Atlanta from June 1, 2016. Neither Dubai-based Emirates nor Abu Dhabi-based Etihad flies to Atlanta. Tuesday, it was announced that Delta will end its membership with North American airline industry lobbying association Airlines for America (A4A).
