KLM CEO Pieter Elbers at the CAPA-ACTE Global Aviation Summit: Responding to digital disruption28-Oct-2016 The CAPA-ACTE Global Aviation Summit kicked off at Hotel Okura in Amsterdam on 27-Oct-2016 with a keynote presentation from KLM CEO Pieter Elbers. Mr Elbers addressed the 850 CAPA-ACTE attendees from 45 countries on the topic of 'Digitizing the Airline': Connecting the dots towards 2025. KLM, with its Amsterdam Schiphol hub, was a disruptor in how and where passengers connect, and now Mr Elbers is bringing change to the digital world. KLM has experienced a rise in passenger website usage, with 33% of tickets sold online and 70% of passengers using online check-in. Mr Elbers is preparing for a shift from mobile first to mobile only: "Whatever people do, it should fit in this small machine". KLM has embraced third-party apps like Facebook Messenger and WeChat, and believes the future is with these types of platforms. KLM is the first airline in the world to use Facebook Messenger. Mr Elbers wants KLM to be able to respond to customer service issues during the journey, eliminating situations where a passenger writes a follow-up letter or e-mail. This saves KLM time and makes for a better experience. KLM's average online response time is 42 minutes, with a target to lower this further.

Lufthansa phases out last Boeing 737 after nearly 50 years Lufthansa will phase out its last Boeing 737 on Oct. 29 after completing a flight from Milan to Frankfurt. The German airline‘s last aircraft, a 737-300, marks a historical move as the Boeing twin-engine narrowbody has been in service for nearly 50 years. Lufthansa became the launch customerfor the type Feb. 19, 1965 when it ordered 22 737-100s. The 737 received FAA certification Dec. 12, 1967 and the first aircraft was delivered for crew training Dec. 27, nearly two weeks later. The first scheduled flights were domestic. The original Lufthansa 737-100 fleet operated 643,048 hours and made 836,446 takeoffs and landings before it was phased out Feb. 25, 1982. ATW understands Lufthansa had a total of 157 Boeing 737s in service over five decades, including the variants 737-100, 200, 200C, 300, 300 QC (quick change), 400 and 500. In the 1990s, up to 120 737s at one time had been in service with Lufthansa. The Lufthansa 737 fleet completed nearly 5.5 million landings. As of July 2016, Boeing said the 737 had amassed a total of nearly 13,500 orders worldwide. Lufthansa is replacing its 737s with an all-Airbus A320 family fleet

(1) Ethiopian Inaugurates the largest and most modern In-flight Catering Center Ethiopian Airlines, is pleased to announce that its newly built, state of the art In-flight Catering Facility will be officially inaugurated on October 29, 2016. The new G+1 In-flight Catering covers a total area of 11,500m2, encompassing most-modern operations and food processing area, fully-equipped with high-tech cooking and bakery equipment, large capacity dishwashing and heavy-duty ice-cube machines, hot kitchen, storage units, cold rooms, stores, flow wrapping, loading bays, high lift trucks and vans, varieties of cooling facilities, a dedicated Halal kitchen as well as a number of modern rooms. Group CEO Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, remarked, ―We are highly delighted with yet another remarkable and historical milestone at Ethiopian, by inaugurating state-of-the-art Inflight Catering Facility, which is the largest in the continent of Africa. This modern facility will significantly enhance our capacity of offering wide variety menu of meal services to our esteemed customers – from the traditional

Moreover, Ethiopian Catering being one of our seven Strategic Business Units, it has well positioned itself to successfully accomplish its vision of becoming the most competitive and leading in-flight catering service provider in Africa, while maintaining highest service quality and safety standards. I strongly believe that our unique Ethiopian hospitality coupled with the variety of culinary experiences, will induce an excellent ingredient and a new dimension to the already multiple award winning inflight services that we are very well known for in the industry.‖ Ethiopian catering service is strictly guided by Hazard Analysis and Critical Control points (HACCP), policies and procedures which promote a high level of quality management for the safe production and handling process of all catering services. The new facility will increase Ethiopian meal uplift capacity to more than 100,000 meals per day, which makes a huge impact as compared to the 36,000 daily volume it used to produce previously. European Union to probe Brussels Airlines-TAP Portugal codeshare European Union (EU) regulators have formally raised antitrust concerns over a codeshare between Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal, but have dropped a similar probe against Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. The EU inquiry into the Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal codeshare on flights between Brussels and Lisbon was started in February 2011. On Oct. 27, the European Commission said it has issued a statement of objections to the airlines. ―We are concerned that in this particular case Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal may have used their codeshare to restrict competition and harm passengers‘ interests,‖ EU Commissioner in charge of competition policy Margrethe Vestager said. The probe relates to the first three years of a codeshare signed in 2009, under which Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal sold unlimited seats on one another‘s flights between Brussels and Lisbon. Prior to the 2009 agreement, the two airlines were the only competitors on the route. The European Commission said that, under the codeshare, Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal discussed and implemented a capacity reduction and aligned prices on the route.

(2) The Commission takes the preliminary view that this combination of practices breaches EU rules that prohibit anti-competitive agreements. The Commission‘s preliminary conclusion is that these practices eliminated competition on prices and capacity between the two airlines on the Brussels-Lisbon route and led to higher prices and less choice for consumers,‖ the Commission said. The statement of objections is a preliminary view and not a final ruling. The airlines will now be given the opportunity to respond. ―TAP has always fully cooperated with the European Commission, providing all documentation and information requested. The statement of objections now submitted constitutes a mere procedural step through which the European Commission communicates the concerns identified to TAP,‖ the Portuguese carrier said. ―TAP will have now a two-month period to present its position to the Commission, which may choose to file the process or to proceed with it. TAP will prepare its response and will continue to fully cooperate with the European Commission.‖ Brussels Airlines issued a similar statement, saying it too has been fully cooperating with the European Commission. ―We will put all efforts into place to demonstrate that the codeshare agreement with TAP Portugal is fully in line with industry practice and competition law. No further information can be provided at this time as investigations are ongoing.‖

(3) At the same time as announcing the TAP ruling, the Commission dismissed a separate codeshare antitrust probe involving Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. ―The Commission's investigation found that Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines did not have full marketing rights to each other's seat inventory and that they applied differing pricing strategies. Furthermore, the codeshare accounted for only a marginal share of the parties' sales on the routes of concern,‖ the Commission said.

IATA Airline Business Confidence Survey October 2016 IATA latest business confidence survey of airlines CFOs and heads of cargo. Key points: When surveyed in early-October as part of our quarterly business confidence survey, airline CFOs and heads of cargo reported that profitability was unchanged in Q3 2016 compared to the same period a year ago; The results from October‘s survey also showed that industry heads continue to expect very little change in profits over the next 12 months, consistent with signs that the industry profitability cycle may have peaked; On the demand side, the responses were consistent with the modest moderation in passenger growth seen during most of this year to date, and were in line with an improvement in conditions for air cargo since early-2016. Expectations for volume growth over the year ahead remain positive for both the passenger and cargo businesses; The majority of respondents reported an annual decrease in operating costs in Q3 2016, helped in some cases by the recovery of currencies against the US dollar. But given that oil and jet fuel prices have trended slowly higher since bottoming-out in early2016, most respondents expect input costs to increase over the next 12 months; The outlook for input costs contrasts with expectations for yields and points to a more challenging profitability environment. In a reflection of strong competition and the subdued economic backdrop, over 90% of respondents expect passenger yields to remain unchanged or to fall further in the year ahead. On the freight side, ongoing increases in freight capacity are expected to continue to weigh on freight yields over the coming 12 months; Airline employment activity increased for the seventh consecutive quarter in Q3 2016. But respondents were more cautious about expectations for employment over the next 12 months than they have been in recent surveys.

(3) increase over the next 12 months; ďťżThe outlook for input costs contrasts with expectations for yields and points to a more challenging profitability environment. In a reflection of strong competition and the subdued economic backdrop, over 90% of respondents expect passenger yields to remain unchanged or to fall further in the year ahead. On the freight side, ongoing increases in freight capacity are expected to continue to weigh on freight yields over the coming 12 months; ďťżAirline employment activity increased for the seventh consecutive quarter in Q3 2016. But respondents were more cautious about expectations for employment over the next 12 months than they have been in recent surveys. PROFITABILITY OUTLOOK How has profitability changed? How do you expect it to change over the next twelve months? a) October 2016 survey b) Compared to previous Surveys When surveyed in early-October, airline CFOs and heads of cargo reported that profitability was unchanged in Q3 2016 compared to the same period a year ago. The results were evenly balanced, with 42% of respondents reporting an increase in profits and 42% reporting a decrease. The spread of responses reflects the business environment becoming more challenging in the second half of 2016, with soft economic conditions, fuel prices trending slowly higher and unit revenues still under pressure. In general, financial performance is holding up best in North America, but is under more pressure elsewhere, including in Europe where terrorism impacts have weighed on operations.

(4) The weighted-average score for profitability over the next 12 months edged up to 52.7 in the October survey – a slight improvement from July‘s sub-50 result. But the bigger picture is that airline CFOs and cargo heads continue to expect very little change in profits over the next 12 months. This is not a signal of an imminent drop in profitability: in fact, the result reflects no expected change from what is actually a relatively healthy financial position for the industry. But the latest survey results are consistent with wider signs that the industry profitability cycle may have peaked. DEMAND GROWTH October‘s survey results were in keeping with the modest moderation in passenger traffic growth seen during most of 2016 to date. The majority of respondents (56%) reported a year-on-year increase in passenger traffic during Q3 2016, although this was the lowest proportion in more than two years. All told, the backward-looking weighted-average score dropped below its five-year average, and it has now fallen for four consecutive surveys. The impacts of terrorism-related events on demand were a notable theme in the reponses this time. A number of respondents noted the heightened uncertainty surrounding the future outlook at present, not least following the ‗Brexit‘ vote in the UK. Nonetheless, the majority )71%) of respondents still expect passenger volumes to increase over the next 12 months, and the weighted-average score remains at a high level. On the freight side, the weighted-average score for volumes over the past three months picked up slightly in the October survey, in keeping with signs of an improvement in the monthly data we track from conditions early in 2016. While the broader global trade backdrop remains weak, the weighted-average score for volumes over the year ahead edged up in October, indicating some cautious optimism in the industry. 48% of respondents expect cargo volumes to increase over the coming 12 months – the highest proportion since the October 2015 survey. Recent and expected change in traffic volumes a) Passenger b) Cargo

(5) INPUT COSTS The majority (58%) of respondents reported an annual decrease in operating costs in Q3 2016. Fuel accounts for just under one-third of total industry costs, and the spot price of jet fuel was approximately 12% lower in Q3 2016 compared to the same period a year ago. The recovery of a number of currencies against the US dollar – notably the Russian rouble and the Brazilian real – will have also helped to reduce input costs in some cases. That said, oil and jet fuel prices have trended slowly higher since bottoming-out in early-2016, and 45% of respondents expect input costs to increase over the next 12 months (the highest proportion since the April 2012 survey). The weighted-average score came in above the 50-mark for the first time in more than two years. How have your unit input costs changed? How do you expect them to change over the next twelve months? a) October 2016 survey b) Compared to previous surveys

(6) YIELD ENVIRONMENT ďťżExpectations for input costs to rise over the year ahead contrast with the outlook for yields. This underlines how the business environment is expected to remain challenging for airline profitability. The majority (55%) of respondents reported that they expect passenger yields to remain unchanged over the coming 12 months. But the weighted-average score remained below the 50-mark for the fourth survey in a row, unchanged from July. ďťżOngoing growth in freight capacity, mainly from additional belly-hold capacity in the passenger fleet, continues to put pressure on cargo yields. Just over half of the survey respondents reported year-on-year decreases in cargo yields in Q3 2016, and the backward-looking weighted-average score for yields remained close to a seven-year low. Notwithstanding a small uptick in the forward-looking weighted-average score in the October results, just under 90% of respondents expect cargo yields to remain unchanged or to fall further in the year ahead. Recent and expected change in yields a) Passenger b) Cargo

(7) Compared to previous surveys a) Passenger b) Cargo EMPLOYMENT ďťż37% of survey respondents reported an increase in employment levels in Q3 2016 compared to the same period a year ago. The weighted-average score for employment activity over the past three months has now been above the 50-mark for seven consecutive quarters. ďťż That said, given the more challenging backdrop for industry profitability, respondents were more cautious about expectations for employment over the next 12 months than they have been in recent surveys. The majority (45%) of respondents reported that they expect to keep employment levels unchanged over the next 12 months. But the proportion expecting to increase employment levels fell for the second survey in a row, to just over 26%. How has your employment level changed? How do you expect it to change over the next twelve months? a) October 2016 survey b) Compared to previous surveys

(1) Two planes catch fire in separate airport runway blazes at Chicago O'Hare, Florida airport (WARNING - GRAPHIC VIDEO) An American Airlines plane caught fire on the runway at Chicago‘s O‘Hare Airport moments before it was set to depart Friday, injuring at least 20 people, officials said. The plane blew a tire and aborted its takeoff just before the flames ignited at 2:35 p.m. officials with the Federal Aviation Administration tweeted. Everyone aboard American Flight 383 for Miami rushed off the aircraft as firefighters rushed to the scene. Among those hurt, at least two people suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, Chicago‘s ABC News affiliate station, WLS-TV, reported. All 161 passengers and nine crew members made it off the burning Boeing 767 jet, representatives for the airline said in a statement. The aircraft had an ―engine related issue‖ rather than a blown tire, according to the airline. But the FAA cited the blown tire reported by flight crew as the reason the plane ended its takeoff while rolling down the runway. Passenger Hector Cardenas told the TV station he heard an explosion after the plane set off from the terminal.

(2) Within 10 or 15 seconds we would have been in the air,‖ Cardenas said. Footage from WLS-TV showed the jet on the ground with flames and large clouds of black smoke billowing from one side of the aircraft, which had its emergency slides deployed. The plane was fully loaded with 43,000 pounds of jet fuel, which was leaking when fire crews reached the aircraft, Chicago Fire Commissioner Timothy Sampey said. ―So they had a heavy volume of fire on both the engine and the entire wing,‖ he said. ―This could have been absolutely devastating if it happened later.‖ Sampey confirmed the incident began with a fire in the right-side engine. A few hours later, at 6:30 p.m. another plane in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., caught fire while landing. A FedEx cargo plane collapsed on touchdown when its landing gear malfunctioned. The fire was quickly extinguished and both FedEx pilots were safe, the company said.

American Airlines aborts takeoff in Chicago as engine parts break off, ignite fire CHICAGO — Pilots were forced to abort a takeoff and evacuate passengers from a burning American Airlines flight Friday on a runway at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after the airliner experienced what a federal official said was a rare and serious type of engine failure. American Airlines Flight 383 to Miami experienced an "uncontained engine failure," in which engine parts break off and are spewed outside the engine, the official said. The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the incident and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The danger of such a failure is that engine pieces effectively become shrapnel and can cause extensive damage to the aircraft. Flames and heavy black smoke poured from the side of the Boeing 767 jet as it sat on the runway after the aborted takeoff. Officials said the incident left 21 people injured. Footage from the scene showed passengers coming down emergency slides and hurrying across grass next to the runway as emergency vehicles surrounded the plane. The right wing was drooping toward the ground and appeared to have partially melted. Passenger Sarah Ahmed told WLS-TV the plane was speeding down the runway when she heard an explosion and saw flames and black smoke. She said everyone on the right side of the aircraft jumped from their seats and moved to the left side. "People are yelling, 'Open the door! Open the door!' Everyone's screaming and jumping on top of each other to open the door," Ahmed said. "Within that time, I think it was seven seconds, there was now smoke in the plane and the fire is right up against the windows, and it's melting the windows."

)2( The pilots reported an engine-related mechanical issue and aborted the takeoff, according to American Airlines spokeswoman Leslie Scott. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the plane made an emergency stop around 2:35 p.m. after experiencing a problem during takeoff. An earlier FAA statement said the plane had blown a tire, but officials later deleted that information from the statement. Chicago Deputy Fire Commissioner Timothy Sampey said 20 passengers suffered minor injuries as they used the emergency chutes to evacuate. American, which had earlier said eight people were injured, later confirmed the 20 figure and added that one flight attendant was also injured. Buses were sent to pick up the passengers and bring them back to the terminal, Scott said. The passengers were to be placed on another flight to Miami Friday evening. The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the incident, with investigators expected to arrive on the scene Friday evening, spokesman Keith Holloway said. Uncontained engine failures are unusual thanks to improvements in designs and the metallurgy. There are many possible causes, including overheating, runway debris or large birds that get sucked into the engine or parts that break when they wear out but aren't replaced during maintenance checks. Tom Walsh, an airline pilot who also works as a security consultant, said that engines that break apart can be especially serious if the parts end up cutting fuel lines or damaging other vital components of the aircraft. But he said even such catastrophic failures don't necessarily doom a plane — even if a pilot runs out of runway and must take off.

)3( Planes are meant to fly with one engine," said Walsh, who has also flown Boeing 767s. "We are trained so that we can lose the engine at the worst possible time ... and then still successfully take off and land." One of the best-known incidents of uncontained engine failure occurred in 1989, when 111 people were killed when a United Air Lines DC-10 crashed while making an emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa. There were 185 survivors. Such engine failures are taken "very seriously" in the aviation industry, said John Cox, a former airline pilot and aviation safety consultant. It's mandatory that airlines report the failures to the NTSB, he said. "It's something everyone in aviation safety tracks very carefully," said Cox, president of Safety Operating Systems. Engines are especially vulnerable to overheating that can cause parts to fail during takeoffs when they are already operating at very high temperatures, said John Goglia, a former National Transportation Safety Board member and expert on aircraft maintenance. The giant blades inside the engines are revolving at about 13,000 rpm, he said. When one comes loose, it's like firing a bullet, he said. The aircraft involved in Friday's incident was built in 2003 and is among American's youngest planes of that model. According to data from FlightGlobal, an aviation news and industry data company, at the start of this year the plane had flown more than 47,000 hours and made more than 7,500 cycles — each takeoff and landing is one cycle. American is flying 767 aircraft that have more than 100,000 hours and 18,000 cycles.

BREAKING: Myanmar plane crash authorities call off hunt claiming aircraft NOT missing A PLANE has crashed into the sea off the west coast of Myanmar, previously Burma. Officials launched a hunt for the "unidentified aircraft" but have now called it off after failing to find the craft. The country's Civil Aviation authority said the plane disappeared into the ocean near the South East Asian country on Friday. Senior department official Tin Maung Ni said: "The only thing I can tell you for sure at the moment is that it is not an aircraft from our domestic airlines, so far as we've checked." The official said Myanmar authorities were alerted by regional "sources" about the crash which, according to the unconfirmed reports, happened late on Friday morning. But staff from the Civil Aviation Department sent to the area where the plane was reported to have gone missing, said they not find any evidence of any crash taking place and have called off the search. The department said it had not received any reports of missing aircraft from airlines operating in Myanmar airspace. Tin Maung Mi said: "So we're not doing anything."

(2)

The head of the Manaung Police Department said he had checked reports of the plane crash "thoroughly" and not found anything to back them up. A spokesman for the Information Ministry also denied any crash had taken place after checking with the Ministry of Transport and Communication. Tin Maung Ni also said there were no reports of foul play from any "companies operating offshore in the area and overflying" Myanmar. Officials are "Still trying to find out more" about the crashed aircraft. The plane is thought to a small c10 seater on a short domestic flight.

Samsung‘s Galaxy Note 7 causes changes at airports Trending memes and breaking news has given much attention to the fact that several of Samsung‘s Galaxy Note 7 phones are overheating, causing fires and explosions. The ongoing problem and attention to the defect has caused Samsung to issue two recalls and for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement a ban on bringing the phone aboard planes. ―It‘s a good thing to ban potentially exploding devices on planes because fires on planes is not good no matter how you cut it,‖ said Rachel Spaulding, assistant professor of English, modern language and journalism. ―It‘s also problematic since Samsung is the only competitor to Apple, so it‘s bad for Samsung.‖ Spaulding and a student traveled to the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, when they heard about it. Additionally, a group of honors college students were traveling to the National Collegiate Honors Conference in Seattle, Washington, when they heard the same report. ―We were flying to Seattle and back and the announcements were made throughout the terminal at regular intervals,‖ said Nicholas Sumner, senior information systems major. ―I had already known about the ban on them so it wasn‘t a surprise or anything.‖ The FAA announced that they are issuing an emergency order to ―ban all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone devices from air transportation in the United States,‖ according to the announcement. It goes on to say ―individuals who own or possess a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device may not transport the device on their person, in carry-on baggage, or in checked baggage on flights to, from, or within the United States. This prohibition includes all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices. The phones also cannot be shipped as air cargo‖.

(2) The ban became active on Oct. 15. ―I don‘t know how adaptive humans are going to be to this because it‘s going to take more time and cause more problems. They )airports( are going to have to check the luggage for the phone,‖ Spaulding said. ―International travel is going to be a problem. It‘s a hassle already with having to go through customs and then back through the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) people with them now having to look through bags for the phone.‖ Samsung issued their first recall of the phones in early September when reports of the old model they sent out as replacement started malfunctioning, caused them to order a second recall in early October for all Galaxy Note 7 devices, along with canceling the phone and banning the sell of it, according to samsung.com ―I feel like enforcement will be extremely difficult, although I don‘t know if TSA is able to see the type of phones that people are carrying when they empty their pockets as they go through security,‖ said Andy Renteria, junior chemistry and physics major. ―If they can tell, then I guess it won‘t be too difficult to enforce it. I‘m sure a lot of disputes will occur because people won‘t want to just throw away their phone as they‘re going through security.‖ The fact that the phones have been having problems and that they had to issue two recalls raises more questions, according to Spaulding. ―There shouldn‘t have been such a rush to get the product out,‖ Spaulding said. ―Maybe extend the testing for longer periods before it goes on to the market so we can make sure these products are safe.‖
