Bombardier C Series Makes China Debut Bombardier has made its mark in the Middle Kingdom at the 11th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai by showcasing the C Series CS300 airliner for the first time ever at the biennial show. The aircraft on display in Zhuhai is actually the program’s second flight-test aircraft, but bears the livery of the aircraft’s first operator, Air Baltic. The company’s ―footprint in China continues to grow with approximately 150 aircraft in service at present,‖ Bombardier Commercial Aircraft vice president of sales, marketing and asset management Colin Bole told a press gathering at the Zhuhai Aerodrome. ―Overall the demand for passenger/cargo aircraft in China is projected to be second only to North America in the coming years. This includes a 2,450-aircraft projection in the 60- to 150-seat range—the segment of the market that we at Bombardier cover—in the next 20 years.‖ Bole reported ―a substantial backlog‖ for the C Series, including an order and options for 75 CS300s from Air Canada and an order for 125 CS100s—convertible to CS300s—from Delta Air Lines. ―We have secured some 300 orders for this model, which is optimal for launching a new design of this type,‖ he said. Bombardier believes China will account for more than 15 percent of the total world demand for 100- to 150-seat aircraft over the coming 20-year period. ―The Chinese government wants to make air travel available to all its citizens, with a major emphasis on the regional market,‖ noted Bole. ―Many people are living in Midwest regions of China, which requires regional flights for them to gain access to major air travel hubs. This government support— along with the rapid plans for overall economic and infrastructure modernization—will prompt significant growth in these kinds of regional markets.‖ Bombardier claims the CS100 and CS300 both can operate more effectively than other models when flying from challenging airports and climatic conditions in locations like Lhasa, Tibet. ―The aircraft will also carry more cargo than any other model in its size or class,‖ said Bole, who referenced Bombardier’s flexible cabin configuration, which allows for 40 percent more carry-on luggage than its previous models. He and other Bombardier officials pointed out that CS100 and CS300 address a market that the company’s competitors do not. Meanwhile, Bombardier’s models do not compete headto-head with current indigenous Chinese programs like the Comac C919, due to their smaller size. ―[The C919] could be a fine aircraft, but the CS100 and CS300 will act as complementary aircraft‖ for any potential C919 applications, said Bole. Separately at Zhuhai, Bombardier revealed Industrial Bank of China’s leasing arm, CIB, as the customer for 10 CRJ900 models, the order for which it previously made public under the condition the customer would remain undisclosed. One of the company’s other customers, Chongching-based China Express airlines, concentrates on service to China’s small to medium-sized cities. Analysts of China’s market told AIN that if Chinese home-grown aircraft programs fail to produce useful or practical solutions on time, then firms like Bombardier will reap the benefit with an ability to offer an off-the-shelf product that satisfies a need in the region. Moreover, Bombardier maintains a current and constantly expanding infrastructure in country to support its product.

Gulfstream Actively Upgrading Older Jets For Jeff Gayon, the GIV and GV represent boundless opportunity for lifeextending upgrades, rather than just being older airplanes that will quietly exit the business aviation stage as their values steadily drop and buyers opt for newer airplanes. As Gulfstream’s director of product support technical sales and development, Gayon sees his job as helping GIV and GV owners keep their steeds operating efficiently and safety for decades. After all, the airframes are designed to last for many years and thousands more hours than any business operator can put on them. ―My vision on the GIV and GV is that operators have been concerned that we’re not investing in the airplane and will end up like the GII and GIII,‖ he said. ―In the last few years we’ve done so much, re-creating [the airplane] from the cockpit to the cabin to connectivity to mechanical things to keep it going. With my team I’m constantly thinking 2030. Whatever we’re doing with these airplanes, [we’re thinking] what is five or ten years down the road, and how to keep these updated and flying through at least 2030.‖ To back up these goals, Gulfstream has invested in its own engineering and certification programs, but also is working with partners such as Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, Inmarsat, Gogo Business Aviation and others to bring new products to the legacy Gulfstream platform. Obviously, the value of used GIVs and GVs has dropped, and buyers can find a GIV for as little as $2 million and a GV for $12 million. ―That’s a lot of airplane,‖ Gayon said. ―Put a little love into them and spend a little money, and you have such a fantastic machine with all the latest and greatest technologies that are out there. And you can go anywhere.‖ A key element in upgrading the older Gulfstreams is replacing CRT cockpit displays with LCDs. ―There are a lot of things you can do once you get the CRTs out,‖ he said. ―Adding technology is our mantra.‖ The PlaneDeck LCD upgrade brings the GIV and GV closer to the flight deck configuration of the G450/G550, and earlier this year, Gulfstream certified synthetic vision on the GIV and GV PlaneDeck cockpit. More than 130 of the 720 GIVs and GVs in the field have been upgraded to PlaneDeck so far, according to Gayon. From there, Gayon’s product development team looks at upgrades that can be added one at a time, instead of developing an expensive all-inclusive package of multiple modifications. ―You can add a little every year,‖ he explained. ―This limits downtime and immediate out-of-pocket expense.‖

In late August Gulfstream received STC approval for its FANS 1/A+ upgrade for the GIV and GV, using TrueNorth’s Simphonē Iridium datalink. The STC is agnostic, Gayon explained, allowing the use of any TSO’d Iridium datalink so that customers aren’t limited to just one satcom provider. Operators have the option of upgrading their FMS CDU to Honeywell’s new touchscreen CD-830, and with this they can elect to add a software upgrade to achieve European Link 2000 capability. While the GIV and GV are exempt from the Link 2000 requirement, ―best-equipped, best-served‖ will apply to aircraft so equipped when operating in Europe. Gulfstream’s FANS solution is fully integrated with the flight deck automation of the GIV and GV, unlike some other, less expensive FANS solutions that replace the third FMS with another manufacturer’s unit that doesn’t hook into the autothrottles and facilitate the performance capabilities of the original FMS. ―We’re trying to make [our FANS solution] the best that there is,‖ Gayon said. ―Our philosophy has been around maintaining the automation. The next best solution doesn’t include the automation. We felt that for our operators and pilots, from a situational awareness and CRM standpoint, [the other solutions] are not going to be the right solution our pilots want to see. They want to use the automation. The beauty of this, it’s a Honeywell [FMS], it’s almost identical from a keystroke standpoint to the G450 and G550. It maintains all the autothrottle, autopilot, VNAV and performance functions.‖ For the 2020 ADS-B out mandate, Gulfstream’s large-cabin fleet (GIV through G650 models) is more than 80 percent compliant. The G150 and G200 midsize fleet is less compliant, however ―they are slowly but surely coming on,‖ Gayon said. ―As we do these avionics summits, we’re just pounding on operators about planning for this upgrade. If they wait, if they think the regulators are going to push this out, they’re mistaken.‖ Large-cabin Gulfstreams will have the option of adding an extra ADS-B antenna on top of the fuselage, for transmitting ADS-B signals to Aireon’s space-based ADS-B receivers mounted on Iridium’s Next satellites. This provides continuous ADS-B coverage over oceanic and remote areas of the planet. Operators can view their upgrade options for NextGen mandates on the MyGulfstream website, including what is needed to comply; applicable Gulfstream aircraft service changes and maintenance and operations letters; and whether a letter of authorization is required.

Gayon’s team also develops cabin interior and management/entertainment system upgrades for the legacy jets. This includes replacing all incandescent lights with LEDs, inside the cabin and on the airframe exterior, and LEDs should be available for all models in the second quarter of 2017. Refurb options are also available, from carpets to softgoods on cabin seats, upgrading the yoke finishing in the cockpit, fresh paint and more. The area of most concern for the owners of these jets is now airborne connectivity. ―This is a huge focus,‖ he said. Two years ago, Gulfstream set up a connectivity council to study airborne connectivity options across the different Gulfstream models. ―We see all these changes in connectivity that are going to require a lot of different solutions,‖ he said. The most popular solution for Gulfstream owners is a combination of Gogo’s air-to-ground system and Inmarsat SwiftBroadband satcom. For service faster than the 432 Kbps offered by SwiftBroadband, Gulfstream offers Kuband ViaSat service (marketed as BBML). Satcom Direct’s SDR router is the preferred choice for Gulfstream operators, although some use Gogo’s UCS 5000. The next big development is Inmarsat’s Ka-band Jet Connex satcom, which was certified first on the G650. This will offer a guaranteed data rate of up to 6 Mbps, although it can go as high as 15 Mbps with the tail-mounted antenna that can fit on a large-cabin Gulfstream. Honeywell manufactures the satcom hardware and antenna and is working with five service providers to provide the connectivity. Jet Connex will be available in the first quarter of next year on the G550, followed by the G450 in the second quarter, then the GIV and GV. Gulfstream operators want the ability to watch television when flying over the ocean, and Jet Connex can allow this, so Gulfstream’s connectivity council is working on making this possible. ―We want to come up with a solution that’s reasonable [cost-wise],‖ Gayon said. ―Technology-wise, it’s definitely doable.‖ For midsize Gulfstreams, the upcoming Iridium Next satcom offers a reasonably priced connectivity solution, with an antenna requirement suited to smaller jets. ―I feel we are ahead of the rest of the industry in what we’re doing,‖ Gayon said.

http://www.ainonline.com/ Boeing, Comac Sign Pact To Expand Environmental Efforts Boeing and China’s Comac have agreed to expand their collaboration in the field of so-called sustainable growth of commercial aviation. The agreement, signed Tuesday during the Zhuhai Airshow, builds on an initial agreement signed in March 2012, under which they’ve engaged in research on improving fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in areas such as biofuel research and air traffic management efficiency. Under the new agreement, the companies will concentrate on six areas of research through the renamed Boeing-Comac Sustainable Aviation Technology Center. The six areas of research encompass further collaboration on technologies dedicated to sustainable aviation fuel; ATM technologies and applications; environmentally sustainable manufacturing, including recycling of materials; technologies aimed at creating an environment in aircraft cabins more suitable for aging populations; adopting new standards in energy conservation and emissions reduction; and workplace safety improvements during cabin and ground operations. Under the terms of both the 2012 agreement and the most recent pact, Boeing and Comac will jointly select and fund research by China-based universities and research institutions. The initial agreement created the Boeing-Comac Aviation Energy Conservation and Emissions Reductions (AECER) Technology Center, where the companies have conducted 17 research projects leading to an aviation biofuel demonstration facility that turns waste ―gutter oil‖ into jet fuel and three ATM software prototype systems. Twelve domestic and international research partners now participate in the center’s activities. ―The two companies have enhanced mutual trust and understanding during five years of working together,‖ said Comac vice president Wu Guanghui. ―The agreement signed today extends and will bring our cooperation to a new level, enabling the two companies to leverage their own advantages for win-win results that can benefit not only China, but also the rest of world.‖ Separately, Boeing and Comac continue to advance plans revealed last year to open a joint venture facility in Zhoushan, China, to install interiors and paint 737s before delivery to Chinese customers. The timing of the plant’s opening and first deliveries remain subject to final agreements with the Chinese government and Comac. The Chinese government has identified Zhoushan and the region as a ―focus area‖ for development in its 13th Five-Year Plan. The city has an existing shipbuilding industry and a port suitable to support the new operation, as well as low airport congestion and airspace availability.

http://www.aviationnews.net/ Oakland: British Airways launches direct flights to London from Oakland airport OAKLAND — Oakland will get its second direct flight route to London beginning next year. British Airways will launch nonstop flights from Oakland International Airport to London Gatwick starting March 28, 2017. The new service will make British Airways the only European airline to operate from all three Bay Area airports (the carrier had previously launched service from San Jose’s Mineta Airport and San Francisco International Airport). ―The Bay Area is a very important market,‖ said Colm Lacy, British Airways’ head of commercial at Gatwick. ―This is an opportunity to give consumers a choice )in the Bay Area( and meet everyone’s needs.‖ Flights will operate four days a week between London Gatwick and Oakland, accommodating 275 customers across a three-cabin Boeing 777. The initial flights will have introductory fares starting at £189, or roughly $231 in the United States. ―You’re coming to a place that’s becoming a hub for innovation … and for education,‖ said Michael Colbruno, president of the board of commissioners for the Port of Oakland, speaking to British Airways executives at a news conference in Oakland on Tuesday. ―Your coming here will change where we stand as an airport.‖ Oakland International has been expanding its international flights from various airlines. British Airways will be the second carrier to provide nonstop flights from Oakland to London, after Norwegian Air launched direct flights to London Gatwick from Oakland in September. The airport and Norwegian Air also recently announced new service to Copenhagen and Barcelona, the airline’s fourth and fifth European destinations from the Oakland airport, and the Bay Area’s only nonstop flight to Spain. The airport is working on a $35 million expansion to its international arrivals building that will double international flight capacity. There is also the ongoing $200 million renovation of Terminal 1, which was started in 2008 to update and modernize the airport. September marked the airport’s 34th consecutive month of passenger traffic growth, with a 9.6 percent increase over the same period in 2015. More than 1 million passengers came through the airport in September. ―We are so pleased to welcome British Airways to OAK, and greet them with tremendous excitement as this new transatlantic service represents ever-expanding opportunities for our growing airport and the entire Bay Area,‖ said airport director Bryant L. Francis in a statement from the Port of Oakland. ―Bay Area residents and visitors will have more options than ever before in selecting the schedule and airport which best fits their needs when traveling to/from London on British Airways.‖

FAA Suspends Controversial PFC Order The FAA announced this week that it has agreed to suspend the review period on a draft Passenger Facility Charge order that could have increased the regulatory burden on airports and expanded the agency's federal involvement in the local program. The agency's decision comes after airports and airlines have been pressing the agency to withdraw the draft order and start over. AAAE and ACI-NA have been urging the FAA to rescind its draft PFC order, start meaningful discussions with airports and other aviation stakeholders, and come up with a new plan. "I commend the FAA for making the right decision to suspend its draft PFC order," AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli said today. "By working with airports and other stakeholders in a collaborative fashion, I'm optimistic that the FAA can come up with a better proposal that will improve the way airports finance critical infrastructure projects with local revenue."

FAA forecasts 5-year decline in airport construction In its latest report to Congress, the Federal Aviation Administration said airport construction projects and other capital improvements that qualify for federal Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants will drop by approximately $1 billion over the next five years to $32.5 billion, according to Engineering News-Record. The projected spend represents a decline of 3% from the FAA's last fiveyear projection, issued in 2014, and a significant reduction from the $52.3 billion forecast in 2010. Because the vast majority of big terminal construction and renovation undertakings are not eligible for the AIP grants, those larger projects were not part of the FAA's latest figures. Dive Insight: The FAA report aside, there's no indication that airport planners have downsized the size or scope of their projects this year. Just last month, Los Angeles International Airport officials announced that they were soliciting input on the environmental review for its planned $5 billion overhaul. The expansion includes two offsite ground transportation transfer facilities, a new rental car center and a 2.25-mile elevated peoplemover. The people-mover component is a $2.7 billion undertaking, and five teams have been invited to submit proposals for a public-private partnership for the project. Another massive airport project is underway at LaGuardia Airport in New York. The new $4 billion terminal project, which is also being built as a P3, involves 1.3 million square feet and will have 35 gates. Skanska USA is leading the joint venture that is designing, building, operating and maintaining the new terminal, and Skanska has called it the company's largest project thus far. San Francisco Airport also began a $2.4 billion terminal replacement project this summer. The eight-year timeline will see the construction of a new facility with 24 gates, two boarding areas, central check-in, security, baggage claim and a new mezzanine. Perhaps the airport project with the longest timeline and broadest scope is taking place at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Planners there have devised a $6 billion, 20-year construction and renovation program, which includes a $393 million terminal to be finished in 2018 and a $943 million runway with a completion date of 2034.

http://www.aviationnews.net/ MA700 First Flight Delayed One Year; Delivery Not Before 2020 ZHUHAI, China—The MA700 turboprop is now due to fly in 2018, a year later than previously planned, Avic said, forecasting deliveries no earlier than 2020. The state-owned company is prepared to market the 78-seat aircraft on the basis of only a Chinese airworthiness certificate if, because of regulatory obstacles, it is unable to get FAA validation of the certification. The MA700 is still in the detail design phase, an Avic representative said. That phase was supposed to end in 2015, though there was an acknowledged chance that it could extend to into 2016. Describing the new schedule to Aviation Daily in an interview ahead of Airshow China, to be held Nov. 1-6 here, the representative did not disclose reasons for the delay. Industry sources told Aviation Daily that the MA700 schedule had slipped in September. An Avic unit in the program delivered a major engineering manufacturing sample, a nonflyable rear fuselage, in September. The timing was rather late for a program that was supposed to execute its first flight in 2017. The MA700 will be powered by the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150C engine, a new powerplant that Avic expects to give it an advantage in the market. Low production costs are intended to be another advantage. The big prospective disadvantage is lack of Western validation of the airworthiness certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), by either the FAA or the European Aviation Safety Agency. Many countries, especially those with advanced economies, insist on certification or validation by the FAA, EASA other highly regarded agencies. Avic can sell the aircraft despite that, because the CAAC airworthiness requirements are even higher than the FAA’s, the representative said. The FAA is working with the CAAC toward recognizing the Chinese agency’s competence, but the regulatory program has been delayed. Avic’s current production turboprop is the Y-7, based on the Antonov An-24 and now marketed in two versions called MA60 and MA600. The most valuable experience Avic has gained from the MA60 and MA600 has been learning to work with customer airlines, the representative said. Other Avic officials have, from time to time, said the company needed a stronger customer focus.

Pilot Shortage Seeping Into Bizav, JSfirm Survey Shows A growing number of business aircraft operators are beginning to feel the effect of a shortage of qualified pilots, according to a recent survey from online aviation job marketplace JSfirm (Booth 4837). The results of its 2016 Business Aviation Survey found that 43.12 percent of respondents answered ―yes‖ to the question ―Is the pilot shortage impacting your operations?‖ This is up from 31.53 percent in 2015, the first year JSfirm conducted the survey. ―This survey aligns with what we are seeing internally,‖ said JSfirm manager Jeff Richards, who noted that job postings are up 30 percent this year. The survey of more than 200 Part 91 and 135 operators also found a decline in flight hours and new and used aircraft acquisitions, when compared with last year. When asked what the estimated increase in flight hours was, 46.54 percent responded ―no increase.‖ This is up from 41.21 percent in 2015. Those that did report increases in 2016 primarily estimated the increase to be by 20 percent or less. Roughly only 7 percent of the respondents increased their flight hours by more than that. Those that planned to acquire new aircraft in the next 12 to 24 months dropped from 19.01 percent in 2015 to 15.32 percent. Used aircraft acquisition plans dropped slightly from 28.17 percent in 2015 to 27.93 percent of respondents this year. In addition, refurb plans are down over the next two years, falling from 34.86 percent that expressed plans for refurbishment of their existing aircraft last year to this year’s survey showing 30.63 percent. The majority of the respondents operate small flight departments with 10 or fewer employees. About half of the respondents have no more than two aircraft in the flight department and another 20.74 percent have between three to five aircraft.

http://www.aviationnews.net/ Airbus Shows Curvy Cabin Concept At NBAA Unlike most corporate interiors, there are few straight lines to see in Melody, the nature-inspired Airbus cabin concept unveiled at NBAA 2016 for future customers of the company’s new ACJ320neo family. ―We have a new generation of aircraft, so let’s have a new generation of cabin to go in it,‖ says Airbus Corporate Jets Marketing Director David Velupillai. ―The customer has a completely free choice of what kind of cabin to use, but we are saying, let’s take the opportunity to go beyond what is out there today,‖ he adds. Dominated by a broad passageway that meanders, stream-like, between curved alcoves, suites, seating areas and a large kitchen, the cabin concept weaves together two main strands – ―curves inspired by nature and an emphasis on sound,‖ says Sylvai Mariat, head of creative design and concepts at ACJ. ―It’s very much out-of-the-box thinking. Many times interior designs are copy-andpaste in business aviation, but we aim to push new solutions.‖ One of the most striking aspects of the interior is the reshaping of the ceiling panels which are formed of multifunctional speakers and light sources. Rectangular loudspeaker panels, or audio boxes, are blended into the curve of the fuselage interior for better acoustics. ―This was our starting point, rather than an add-on, and led us to reshape the cabin ceiling for great sound – just as one would when designing a theater,‖ Mariat says. Cabin interior zones are divided by extra-large openings, rather than conventional doors and bulkheads, but can be closed off by a moveable door. Fiber-optic lighting, built into the carpet, provides guidance along the cabin in low lighting, while the amount of natural light entering the cabin can be adjusted by finger-tip-controlled electrochromic windows. Other features driven by input from customers include a large kitchen to enable preparation of fresh food, and a home cinema area aft of mid-cabin. A large bedroom, located at the back of the cabin, incorporates a 65-in.-wide curved screen built into the curved contours of the rear pressure bulkhead. Airbus, which launched the first two new ACJ variants in May 2015 on the back of the development of the re-engined A320neo family, says an ACJ321neo is ―likely, though we haven’t talked about it yet.‖ The initial ACJ320neo is due to be delivered at the end of 2018, while first delivery of the ACJ319neo is expected in the second quarter of 2019. To date, Airbus has taken orders for six ACJneos, of which four are for the ACJ320neo and two for the smaller variant.

/www.flightglobal.com Finnair crew credited with averting serious incursion Finnish investigators are probing an incident in which the pilots of a taxiing Finnair aircraft opted not to cross a runway, despite receiving clearance, because they had sighted another aircraft on approach. Although air traffic control at Helsinki Vantaa had cleared the Finnair Airbus to cross runway 22L, the crew held short after seeing the arriving Bombardier CRJ900, which was being operated for SAS. The incident occurred at around 08:50 local time on 28 October, according to the Finnish air accident investigation board, which adds that, despite light drizzle, visibility was good. It points out that, had the weather been poor, the outcome might have been more serious. Several Finnair aircraft were taxiing at the time and the board has not clarified the service involved, although it says the aircraft was an Airbus A320-family jet. The board says the Finnair pilots "noticed" the approaching SAS flight and decided not to cross the runway. It has attributed the incident to an air traffic control fault, and is convening a panel to explore the reasons. Two air traffic controllers, a psychologist and a flight instructor will be among the panel members.

http://www.avitrader.com/ Dubai Government to invest US$3 billion in airport expansion With 78 million passengers in 2015, Dubai International Airport is the world’s largest international airport by passenger numbers, having seen a 13% annual compound annual growth since 2000. In 2010 a second Dubai international airport, Al Maktoum International Airport was opened. Today, November 1, the Dubai government announced it will be investing US$3 million, with the intention of seeing Al Maktoum International Airport become the primary airport and capacity numbers for 2025 boosted to an estimated 146 million. According to H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai’s Supreme Fiscal Committee, ―Dubai remains firmly committed to the development of the Al Maktoum International Airport and to the growth of the global aviation sector, and this initial US$3bn transaction to support Dubai’s ambitious 2025 passenger capacity targets is testament to our belief.‖ ―In line with Dubai’s vision to maintain its status as one of the world’s most important cultural and commercial centres, the planned expansion of both of the city’s airports is critically important, and our department is proud to play a vital role in their ongoing financing, just as we have with other similarly major projects,‖ said Abdulrahman Saleh Al Saleh, Director General, Department of Finance for the Government of Dubai (DOF). The DOF will be coordinating this new investment which involves Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) and Dubai Aviation City Corporation (DACC), the three parties looking to raise finance through a mixture of sources, both Islamic and traditional. The financial advisor for the arrangement is HSBC.

)1( www.atn.aero JAL Group Announces Consolidated Financial Results for the First Six Months of the Fiscal Year 2016 JAL Group (JAL) today announced the consolidated financial results for the first six months of the fiscal year of 2016 - the period from April 1 to September 30, 2016. For the details, please refer to attached [Consolidated Financial Results for the Six Months Ended September 30, 2016]. During the first six months of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017 (April 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016, hereinafter referred to as ―the second quarter‖(, the Japanese economy showed weakness while consumer confidence stabilized. Due to effects of the earthquakes that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region in April )the ―2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes‖(, the demand in Kyushu market declined. In overseas economies, weakness was observed in new emerging markets in Asia and resource-rich countries such as China’s economic slowdown. Crude oil prices, which affect our fuel purchasing costs, international passenger revenue and international cargo revenue, have been lower than the year before, and the JPY/USD foreign exchange rate showed the Japanese yen getting stronger. Under these economic conditions, we worked to increase profit consciousness of every staff by aligning our actions with the JAL Philosophy and the amoeba management system, realizing greater management efficiencies, and providing the finest service to our customers anchored in our firm commitment to flight safety in order to reach the targets set out in Rolling Plan 2016 for the JAL Group Medium Term Management Plan announced on February 18, 2016. As a result of the above, consolidated operating revenue decreased by 5.2% year-on-year to 651.9 billion yen and operating expense decreased by 1.5% to 559.4 billion yen, while operating income decreased by 23.0% year on year to 92.4 billion yen and ordinary income decreased by 26.8% to 89.8 billion yen. Net income attributable to owners of the parent for the second quarter was 71.4 billion yen, down 30.9% year on year.

)3( www.atn.aero (2) Air Transportation Segment International Passenger In route operations, the Narita and Dallas/Fort Worth service which opened the previous fiscal year has been in great demand, and therefore, we increased services from four weekly services to daily services from March 20, 2016. Flight frequency was also increased on the Narita=Moscow route by one flight to four weekly flights from April to June, and further, to five weekly flights from July to October to cater to increasing passenger demand. As for alliances, the proposed inclusion of Iberia in the trilateral joint business with British Airways and Finnair on routes between Japan and Europe received antitrust immunity approval. As part of the joint business, Iberia and JAL have commenced codeshare cooperation on Iberia-operated flights between Narita and Madrid from October 18, following the sales of new joint fares by the four airlines began from September 21, 2016. Furthermore, JAL and Alaska Airlines forged a codeshare partnership effective June 29, 2016. On the marketing front, to increase customer preference for JAL and enhance affinity for Japan in China, taking into account the large influx of Chinese tourists to Japan, we opened a special website and have sent contents regularly over China’s largest SNS ―WeChat.‖ In addition, we operated a JAL Doraemon Jet painted with special Doraemon livery. On the product side, we continue to expand routes operated with JAL SKY SUITE configured aircraft, offering full-flat seats in Business Class with unobstructed aisle access from every seat and the ―New Spacious Economy‖ in Economy Class, which is more spacious than the standard seating arrangement. We are also progressively retrofitting our 777-200ER aircraft with JAL SKY SUITE cabin interiors. The JAL SKY SUITE 777-200ER is currently in service on the Haneda=Bangkok and Haneda=Singapore routes. As of the end of September 2016, JAL SKY SUITE operated routes including the 777-300ER, 787-8, 787-9 and 767-300ER have increased to 30 flights on 25 routes. As a result of the above, capacity on international routes measured in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) increased by 0.8% year-on-year, demand measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) increased by 0.1% yearon-year, the Load Factor (L/F) was 80.0% year-on-year (down 0.5 percentage points), and international passenger revenue was 213.1 billion yen, down 9.6% from the year before due to a decrease in fuel surcharge revenue and appreciation of the yen.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)4( www.atn.aero

Domestic Passenger In route operations, in response to falling passenger demand caused by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes, we speedily downsized aircraft principally on Kyushu routes to/from Haneda to improve profitability, while operating many unscheduled flights mainly between Fukuoka and Kagoshima to supplement disrupted surface transport services in Kyushu. On routes to/from Itami, we introduced the new Embraer 190, the first regional jet configured with Class J, and launched services with this new jet on the Itami=Kagoshima route from May 2016 and further, on the Itami=Sendai route from July to offer greater convenience and comfort when flying on Itami routes. On the marketing front, to support restoration from the Kumamoto Earthquakes, we set up a special fare ―Oen (Support) Sakitoku‖ offering greater discounts than regular discount fares applicable to routes to/from Kyushu. We cooperated in relief efforts to the greatest extent possible, such as meeting passenger demand to Kyushu to visit hometowns or volunteer in quake stricken areas, and providing free transportation for volunteer groups and relief supplies. In addition, to lure international travelers to Kyushu, we launched a new domestic fare called ―oneworld YOKOSO/Visit KYUSHU Fare‖ to create opportunities for international visitors to visit Kyushu starting May 2016. We also participated in the ―Kyushu Fukko (Restoration( Discount‖ Project from July 2016 in partnership with General Incorporated Association Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organization, and started selling travel products with JAL Dynamic Package to revive demand for tourism in the Kyushu region, using the Kyushu Tourism Oen (Support) Grant subsidized by the Japanese government. In airport services, in June 2016 we renovated Sakura Lounge at New Chitose Airport in its entirety and created Diamond Premier Lounge, the second domestic airport offering this prestigious lounge, improved our food and drink service menu, reviewed service times, and such to offer enhanced quality in our airport lounge service. As for inflight service, to enable more customers to try our inflight W-Fi service introduced in July 2014, we conducted a ―15 minute for free campaign‖ on all flights operated by Wi-Fi available aircraft. We also increased the number of programs available in our free video program to provide more pleasant and enjoyable flights. As a result of the above, capacity on domestic routes measured in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) decreased by 2.1% year-on-year, demand measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) decreased by 0.4% year-on-year, the Load Factor (L/F) was 68.0% year-on-year (up 1.1 percentage points), and domestic passenger revenue came to 253.3 billion yen, down 1.3% from the year before.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)5( www.atn.aero

International and Domestic Cargo In international cargo operations, we worked to steadily secure demand by efficiently capturing transit cargo to a third country in order to maximize revenues. As a result, cargo volume during the reporting period when measured in Revenue Cargo Ton Kilometers (RCTK) increased by 1.1% year-on-year. However, revenue came to 20.3 billion yen, down 29.7% from the yearearlier-period, due to a decline in fuel surcharge revenue caused by lower fuel prices, effects of the strong yen on foreign currency denominated cargo revenue, and netting international cargo sales commission from revenue due to a change in adjusting method. In domestic cargo operations, though the parcel transport business remained strong, cargo volume measured in Revenue Cargo Ton Kilometers (RCTK) declined 3.5% year-on-year as a result of a demand change of certain shipments to the ground transportation, a decrease in perishable shipments caused by adverse weather conditions, and such. As a result, domestic cargo revenue slipped 4.9% year-on-year to 11.1 billion yen.

)٩( www.atn.aero The full-year consolidated revenue is expected to decrease by 63.0 billion yen over our previous forecast, primarily due to weaker demand in international passenger operations and less revenue per passenger both in international and domestic passenger operations than expected. In addition, we have revised exchange rate and fuel price estimates on which we base our plan. The full-year consolidated expense is expected to decrease by 32.0 billion yen compared to the previous estimate due to continuous cost controlling initiatives and the revision of estimates on which we base our plan. As a result, full-year consolidated operating income is seen to decrease by 31.0 billion yen from our previous forecast. As we project a decrease of 30.0 billion yen in full-year consolidated ordinary income and a decrease of 31.0 billion yen in full-year net income attributable to owners of the parent, we have revised our earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017 as the above chart. ‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)1( www.atn.aero Dr. Michael Kerkloh, CEO, Munich Airport ATN: Munich Airport was honored as Europe’s first and only Five-Star Airport. What makes Munich Airport a Five-Star Airport?

MK: We are very proud of the many honors and awards we have received over the years. But being awarded as Europe’s first and only Five Star Airport by Skytrax is an extraordinary accolade which challenges us every day anew. Travellers benefit from all a premium airport has to offer: comfortable seating and relaxation areas, sleeping cabins, clear signage, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, public showers, childcare - in short, a full range of services, events and an outstanding selection of shops and restaurants. But overall from passengers we hear how much they appreciate the pleasant ambience at Munich Airport. Certainly, our friendly staff has a big impact on our airport's positive image. Efficient operations and procedures can be found at many airports. But I believe that passengers are looking for this positive overall airport experience. Perhaps this unique "local spirit" is also part of what sets us apart and gives us five-star status. It matters to us that passengers see that they have landed in Munich – not anywhere else. We were driven by the same goal in developing our shopping and dining concept. We want travelers from all over the world to get a first impression of the Bavarian lifestyle and hospitality right from the time they set foot here. Airbräu – the world's only airport brewery is a prime example: sit down, enjoy yourself, and feel at home. ―A five-star label‖ may only be a label, but it shows that we continually strive to set ourselves apart. Munich Airport wants to be unique.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)2( www.atn.aero ATN: How will Munich Airport retain its five-star status?

MK: Getting to the very top is a great achievement, of course. But it's just as difficult to stay there while facing a constantly changing environment, with new problems and new quality standards emerging all the time. Overcoming new challenges and continuing to inspire the drive in your staff to go above and beyond the call of duty is the real test — you ideally want to get a top award not only once but again and again.Over the years, all our airport departments have incorporated the culture of defining and improving standard operating procedures for customer service. This helps to achieve and maintain excellence. I have worked in big and medium-sized airports, but Munich Airport is the most beautiful in Europe, and maybe even in the world. Keeping it that way is at the top of our agenda. ATN: Terminal 2 and the new satellite terminal are a joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. What made this co-operation such a success story?

MK: When Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 opened in 2003, this was the first time worldwide that an airport authority and an airline company had taken joint corporate responsibility for the planning, financing, construction and operation of a terminal building. The idea behind this unique joint venture was to build an efficient and fast hub system and to bundle airport and airline expertise in order to create a terminal building offering maximum service and comfort to passengers. When Terminal 2’s capacity reached its limit of 25,000,000 passengers per year, the construction of the satellite building was the logical continuation of this success story. The satellite takes Munich Airport to a new dimension, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. As one of the world's most advanced airport terminal facilities, the satellite building offers passengers a new level of comfort.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)3( www.atn.aero ATN: How will Munich Airport continue its success story? Are there further plans for expansion?

MK: In contrast to the classical "city airport" at the old location in Munich-Riem, the new airport rapidly developed into a successful "airport city", which now handles over 100,000 passengers a day and is the workplace for 35,000 employees at more than 500 companies. Today, Munich Airport is a major international hub ranking among the busiest in Europe. We started in 1992 with 12 million passengers. Since then we have more than tripled that number to 42 million passengers per year. Munich Airport has steadily expanded to keep pace with the growing demand: In 1999 we opened the Munich Airport Center, followed by Terminal 2 in 2003. Now Germany’s first mid-field terminal went into operation in April of this year – just to name a few important milestones of our history. Our next crucial project for the airport’s and the region’s future is the construction of a third runway. ATN: Why is Munich Airport so determined to obtain approval to build a third runway as soon as possible?

MK: Munich Airport is located at the center of Europe, a factor that has become all the more important with the expansion of the European Union. In addition, Bavaria is one of Europe’s most successful regions, with an export-driven economy, and is reliant on access to international air transport services. An optimum choice of aviation routes and high-quality connections to places all over the world helps to sustain the region’s economic strength and, by extension, the country’s longer-term economic growth. By expanding our airport, we are helping to safeguard our region’s future and secure jobs because the success of the economy tomorrow will depend heavily on our ability to continue operating efficiently as an aviation hub. But Munich Airport will be able to maintain and build on its strong position in global aviation and its important role for the region only if it can grow with the requirements of its customers. The airport is already stretched to the limit with regard to available traffic slots. Since the airport opened in 1992, the passenger volume has more than tripled to around 42 million. In the last five years alone, traffic has increased by almost 20 percent. This trend will continue. For Germany, the Federal Ministry of Transport expects air traffic to grow by about 60 percent by the year 2030 compared to 2010. This will have a significant effect on the Munich hub, with its high share of transfer passengers. The construction of the third runway is thus essential for keeping Munich and Bavaria on track for long-term growth and for continuing their success. Munich Airport’s runway capacity is currently at its limit during eight to ten operating hours per day. Airline requests for additional slots and the corresponding flight connections have to be turned down. Due to the current growth trend, the bottlenecks will get worse. Based on the entire calendar year, the number of flights to and from Munich will increase by 15,000 in 2016 to approximately 400,000 movements. For the coming year, we expect a similar growth scenario based on requests already received from airlines. The construction of the third runway, which has been officially approved and has overcome all court challenges, is therefore necessary to enable the airport to expand the range of available services in line with demand.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)4( www.atn.aero

ATN: What can you report after the first six months of operations of the new satellite terminal?

MK: The results of the first six months are more than respectable. Since it opened on April 26, 2016, handling and operations have worked seamlessly in the new building. The launch phase, in which operations were gradually ramped up, continued until early July, leaving time for various tweaks such as improvements to signage and passenger guidance. The satellite has been operating at full capacity since early July. With its light-flooded spaces and range of services, the new building – Germany's first midfield terminal – has proved a big hit with the airport's passengers and staff. The satellite terminal is a continuation of the successful joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. It increases the capacity of Munich Airport by 11 million to over 50 million passengers per year. With the driverless underground personal transportation system (PTS), passengers need less than a minute to get from Terminal 2 to the satellite. Awaiting guests in the satellite terminal is a total of 7,000 square meters of retail space with 16 stores, seven restaurants and three duty free areas. Especially popular: the central marketplace surrounding the apron tower, with a wide range of Bavarian specialties on offer.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)5( www.atn.aero ATN: Munich Airport claims to be an ―airport city‖. Can you explain this concept, the advantages and challenges?

MK: Munich Airport offers much more than just infrastructure to handle air traffic. It is a powerful engine for growth, generating economic development both on the airport campus and beyond, comprising an "airport city" with an enormous impact on the entire region. As a hive of economic activity in its own right, the Munich hub links the airport region to the world at large. The airport’s non-aviation activities now account for 50 percent of the airport’s total revenues. Under the Airport City concept, however, it is essential to balance the synergy effects between the airport and the surrounding region to avoid unhealthy competition. Apart from attracting headquarters/offices of global companies, showrooms, hotels, a conference center, medical offices and a clinic, a child daycare center and supermarkets, the Munich Airport City also offers an exciting world of shopping, leisure and adventure. Anyone who has traveled to or via Munich Airport knows that the retail world in the two terminals leaves nothing to be desired. A special highlight is "Little Maximillianstrasse", named after Munich's legendary shopping street, on Level 05 in Terminal 2, where the central plaza is ringed with 14 international premium brands. The airport is also noted for its dining choices. The many restaurants, cafés and bistros offer pleasant settings for passengers and visitors to relax. The many dining options include hearty Bavarian dishes and beer brewed right on the premises of Airbräu, the world's only airport brewery: There's something to discover for every taste and every budget. Today airports are much more than just traffic hubs. Munich Airport continually surprises and delights passengers and airport visitors with new ideas for innovative events and activities on the airport campus. There are things happening all year round, from outdoor viewing events during the Euro 2016 soccer tournament, tennis matches between the terminals, the Surf & Style event, which boasts Europe's biggest standing wave, to a winter market during the Christmas season. And last but not least, we are also a world leader for medical services offered at airports. The full-service AirportClinic M offers comprehensive diagnostics and treatment, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. For 35,000 employees on the campus and over 42 million annual passengers, the airport offers almost anything you would find in a small to medium-sized city.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

)6( www.atn.aero ATN: What do you think about the digitalization in the aviation industry and the future of seamless travel?

MK: The digitalization with the focus on seamless travel concepts plays an essential role in the future of aviation. At Munich Airport it is one of five strategic fields of action. The IT and Corporate Strategy divisions cooperate closely in the planning and realization of the airport’s ―digital journey‖ to be prepared for the future. Seamless travel concepts focusing on efficient and comfortable travel experiences for passengers will play an increasing role for all leading high-quality airports. Providing a stress-free and smooth travel chain is a corporatewide project that involves numerous airport divisions as well as external partners. The main objectives are to provide necessary information to passengers, make travel processes smoother and more transparent, and enhance quality and passenger satisfaction. This will be achieved through digital connectivity throughout the customer journey. At the same time, we will be able to learn more about passengers and their preferences, set up new communication channels and will be in a position to offer customers what they need, when they need it. In this way we hope to give non-aviation revenues a further boost. The key will be to achieve the right balance between revenues and customer satisfaction. Providing passengers with individual travel information and customized service offers in real time will take us to a new level. Seamless travel will include first of all information such as navigation, public transportation, flight data and delays, gate changes, waiting times at security and passport control, weather conditions, retail and shop offers, vouchers or wellness and entertainment choices. Secondly, it may comprise all kinds of bookable services like parking, shopping assistance, lounges, meet & greet or VIP service, and support for passengers with mobility restrictions at the departure or arrival airport.

)٧( www.atn.aero ATN: What role do sustainability and green airport concepts play for Munich Airport?

MK: Munich Airport - as an operator of a major infrastructure facility - is aware of its responsibility for the environment. The aim is to keep its impact on climate and the environment as low as possible, looking out for future generations. Thus, for us sustainability is of central importance. A responsible approach to the environment plays a key role in our corporate strategy. We have already rolled out a number of projects that go far beyond statutory requirements and industry standards. In our efforts to become a pioneer in environmental protection, we use a wide range of measures to make sure airport operations have as little impact on the environment as possible. Munich Airport is investing especially in environmental protection strategies that help to increase efficiency. For example, besides improving services for passengers and airlines our brand-new satellite terminal will sets new environmental and energy efficiency standards. The very latest building materials and innovative heating, cooling and lighting technologies ensure that energy usage is reduced to a minimal level: CO2 emissions generated by the building are 40% lower than those emitted by the airport’s existing terminal buildings. All of our efforts are centered around a single ambitious goal to achieve climate-neutral growth by 2020. This means ensuring that neither the expected rise in traffic volume nor the current expansion plans will increase CO2 emissions over the 2005 baseline level.

)٨( www.atn.aero ATN: Are you competing and/or co-operating with other airports and hubs?

MK: We prefer to co-operate, form partnerships and exchange expertise with other major hub airports, and have created a ―sister airport concept‖. These sister airport co-operations are open-ended relations with rights and responsibilities between the partnering airports with the aim of an intensive professional and socio-cultural exchange of both partners without financial responsibilities. Our current sister airports are Changi, BCIA, AOT, Centrair, Airports Company South Africa and Denver Airport. ATN: Do you share your expertise with airport partners in the form of consulting or management contracts?

MK: Since 1949, Flughafen München GmbH (Munich Airport) has established an excellent reputation in the aviation industry. This is partly a reflection of the unparalleled development of the Franz-Josef Strauss Airport since it went into operation in 1992. This know-how and operational success have aroused the interest of airports in many countries. As a result, Munich Airport has been providing consultancy services to airport operators worldwide since 1995.With over 20 years of international consulting experience, our international business division has supported more than 30 airports with tailor-made solutions. ATN: What makes managing an airport so unique for an airport CEO?

MK: What makes this one of the most complex and challenging jobs is the sheer diversity of tasks. As we can see from all the topics discussed above, Munich Airport, as an ―airport city‖ with 35,000 employees and 42 million passengers, never stands still. It connects people and contributes fundamentally to the region’s prosperity. Every day I find new reasons to be proud of being part of this success story and to be able to help move Munich Airport forward.
