Korean Air Pilots Protest Influx of Malaysian Flight Crew The Korean Air Pilots Union (KAPU) has expressed opposition to the scope of KAL’s plan to accept several Malaysia Airlines captains and senior first officers on secondment despite a shortage of pilots at the Korean flag carrier. Korean Air plans to hire some 50 to 70 MAS 777 pilots on temporary assignment starting October 1 under the Malaysian flag carrier’s restructuring exercise. It expects to take more next year as MAS scales down its operations further. According to KAPU spokesperson Ben Lee, Korean Air should accept foreign pilots on a more gradual basis. The union’s objection centers on charges that KAL has already delayed promotions scheduled for its own pilots due to the shortage. ―The promotion of pilots to a bigger fleet will be affected further when so many foreigners are accepted on secondment,‖ Lee said. The union also cites complaints that commercial airline pilots in Korea work more in a year—some 1,050 hours—than do their counterparts at Chinese carriers, who fly a maximum of 850 hours. Korean Air faces a shortage of pilots on its Boeing 747-400, Boeing 777 and Airbus A330-300 fleets due largely to Chinese airlines’ ability to lure an increasing number of experienced pilots with offers of more attractive salary packages and benefits. Some 50 Korean Air pilots have resigned or are in the process of leaving for Chinese carriers. The airline expects more to leave due to delayed promotions. Captains have taken offers from established airlines while first officers tend to move to low fare carriers and startups. Chinese airlines also face a pilot shortage due to rapid expansion of their respective networks.

12 Injured After Severe Turbulence Rocks EgyptAir Flight Two flight attendants and 10 passengers required medical attention after an EgyptAir flight carrying 268 passengers was rocked by severe air turbulence while heading from New York to Egypt, according to an official in the national carrier. The company’s statement said that all the injured passengers were taken to hospital after the plane landed in Cairo. Officials said that the 12 passengers endured superficial injuries. ―There was no need to return back to New York,‖ the official noted, adding that the situation was settled and the flight safely completed its route to Cairo. Upon the arrival of the airplane at Cairo International Airport, Minister of Civil Aviation Hossam Kamal personally traveled to the airport to ensure injured passengers received due treatment. The airplane was also met by the Chairman of EgyptAir Holding Company and a host of other senior aviation officials. The severity of air turbulence is based on how big eddies (periods of shaking, jostling and sometimes stomachchurning rises and falls) are, the strength of the wind shear (the differences in wind speed and/or direction between the outside of the eddy and the inside), and how quickly the plane flies through them. Founded in 1932, EgyptAir is the flag carrier airline of Egypt and operates flights to more than 75 destination.

http://www.tehelka.com/ Prices Of Aviation Fuel, Non-Subsidised Cooking Gas Slashed Prices of aviation turbine fuel eres decreased on 1 September by as much as 11.7%, while prices of non-subsidised cooking gas were reduced by Rs 25.5 per cylinder following a fall in global prices. ATF prices in Delhi were slashed by Rs 5,469.12 per kilolitre (kl), or 11.7% , to Rs 40,938.24 per kl, it was stated by oil companies. The biggest reduction till date was Rs 7,520 per kl, or 12.5% on January 1. Prior to today’s reduction, jet fuel rate was cut by 9.4% to Rs 46,407.36 on August 1 and by Rs 2,086.56 per kl to Rs 51,267.36 on July 1. ATF costs 33% less than petrol. Jet fuel constitutes 40% of an airline’s operating costs and the price cut will cut the financial burden on cashstrapped carriers. No immediate comment was available from airlines on the impact of price reduction on passenger fares. Simultaneously, the oil firms have cut prices of non-subsidised LPG by Rs 25.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder. Cylinders of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) in Delhi has been cut to Rs 559.50 per cylinder as compared to Rs 585 previously. This is the third reduction in as many months. Non-subsidised LPG rates were last slashed by Rs 23.50 on August 1. Prior to that, rates were cut by Rs 18 per cylinder to Rs 608.50 on July 1. Subsidised LPG costs Rs 417.82 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi. The three fuel retailers—Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum—revise jet fuel prices and non-subsidised LPG rates on the first day of every month, based on the average international prices in the preceding month. It may be noted petrol in Delhi costs Rs 61.20 per litre as compared to jet fuel rate of Rs 40.93 a litre, after a Rs 2 per litre cut effected from 1 September.

Lufthansa Group introduces GDS booking fee The airlines of the Lufthansa Group – Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS – have reached a major milestone in their endeavours to modernise their present product structures. A number of collaborations with various partners in the airline distribution segment have been successfully pursued over the last few weeks. The efforts to develop and establish new ―direct connect‖ booking channels are generating strong interest among the industry partners. ―The market is clearly ready for innovations and developments of this kind,‖ explained Jens Bischof, chief commercial officer of Lufthansa German Airlines. ―Our realignment of our distribution has prompted an intensive exchange of views and experiences within our industry.‖ ―This process has had its share of controversy, too,‖ Bischof concedes. ―But we are still as convinced as ever that offering advanced and, at the same time, substantially cheaper additional booking channels – that also allow us to better present our products – is in our customers’ best interests. ―And that’s why we consistently pursue the further development of our distribution channels.‖ As planned, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group are now taking a further major step in implementing their new commercial strategy by ensuring that from today, the costs of bookings made via global distribution systems are met more fairly and transparently by the users involved. To this end, a new ―distribution cost charge‖ of €16 will now be applied to any ticket issued via GDS. Customers of the Lufthansa Group can obtain their tickets without having to pay the new DCC by making their bookings via the member airlines’ websites, via an airline service centre or at an airport ticket desk.

Corruption worth billions identified in PIA by Aviation Division LAHORE (Web Desk) – Financial leakages worth billions in PIAC’s ticket booking system have been identified by the Aviation Division. The FIA has been requested to hold criminal investigations to unearth the malpractices being carried out by PIA officials and travel agents, revealed Aviation Division today. In order to maximize revenue earning potential, PIAC’s ticket pricing structure is based on multiple Revenue Booking Designators (RBDs), as per standard industry practice. The system has inbuilt feature having provision of multiple RBDs for each class, primarily required to respond to market demand/forecast. Hence the ticket cost continues to increase as flight-date nears and more slots are booked. However, due to apparent manual intervention by certain PIA officials for their illegitimate financial gain, the objective of the system is being compromised. It is estimated that the revenue leakage due to the connivance of PIA officials and travel agents may be in billions.
