A320 suffered loss of thrust as it entered mountain wave Air Canada is probing an incident in which an Airbus A320 lost thrust on one engine as is passed through a mountain wave en route to Los Angeles. The aircraft, with 146 passengers and five crew members, was operating from Toronto on 27 January, says the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. It says the A320 (C-FLSS) was cruising at 36,000ft some 85nm southwest of Colorado Springs, in the Rocky Mountains region. The aircraft passed through a mountain wave, oscillations in the atmosphere caused when air current flow is disturbed over high terrain. Its left-hand CFM International CFM56 powerplant rolled back, says the board, from 90% of N1 to 60%. "The aircraft started to lose speed, and started to [descend]," it adds. The crew informed air traffic control of the situation, requesting a change in cruise altitude to 30,000ft, but no emergency was declared. While the left-hand engine showed "slight vibration", says the board, there was no alert from the aircraft’s centralised monitoring system. The engine recovered shortly afterwards and the aircraft landed without further incident. 1 Air Canada closes C$100m Jazz investment Air Canada has invested C$97.3 million ($74.1 million) in regional carrier Jazz Aviation's parent company, having closed a previously announced agreement under which Jazz will also acquire nine additional Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets. The agreement extends the carriers' contract through the end of 2035 while reducing the fees Jazz charges to Air Canada. It calls for Jazz to stop flying aging Dash 8-100 turboprops, reduce its Q400 fleet and fly more 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200s Montreal-based Air Canada and Jazz parent Chorus, based in Halifax, have positioned the deal as responding to threatening competition. They do not name competitors, but in recent years Air Canada has faced threats from rapidly expanding WestJet and from new ultra-discount startups. The C$97.3 million investment gives Air Canada 9.99% of Chorus's shares, and Air Canada gains the right to nominate one director to Chorus's board. The airlines had announced the then-pending deal on 14 January. Air Canada's equity purchase is part of a new capacity purchase agreement (CPA) that takes effect retroactively on 1 January and runs until the end of 2035, ten years beyond the 2025 expiration of the previous deal, struck in 2015. "With this amendment, the parties will effectively address increased domestic and international competition, changing market demand and fluctuating fuel prices through significant changes that will modernise" and increase the size of aircraft operated by Jazz, say Air Canada and Chorus in a joint media release. The deal will slash Air Canada's regional airline expenses by doing away with what Chorus's regulatory documents call "above-market fixed-fee rates carried over from its legacy agreement" with Air Canada. The agreement also resets to "market rates" performance-based incentive payments Air Canada makes to Jazz.

2 Combined, those changes will save Air Canada C$50 million in both 2019 and 2020, and another C$53 million between 2021 and 2025, the carriers say. Chorus intends to use Air Canada's C$97.3 million investment primarily to expand its aircraft leasing business. It will do so partly by acquiring and then leasing to either Jazz or Air Canada the nine new CRJ900s, documents say. Chorus will use about 60% of Air Canada's investment (equating to C$58.4 million) to acquire those aircraft, which it expects to begin arriving by the end of 2020. Under a revised fleet plan, Jazz this year will to stop flying 15 Dash 8-100s, reduce its Q400 fleet from 44 to 36 aircraft and add another five CRJ200s to Air Canada's operation. Jazz will end 2019 with 105 aircraft in Air Canada's service, down from a current 116. The fleet will remain at 105 aircraft through 2025. The new agreement also calls for Air Canada to "consolidate its existing CRJ regional capacity into the Jazz operation", says a media release. Air Canada did not immediately respond to requests to clarify that statement. Regional carrier Air Georgian also operates 16 CRJ100/200s for Air Canada, according to Flight Fleets Analyzer. Chorus predicts the new deal will generation C$940 million more revenue than the previous agreement, which will "more than offset" fee reductions, regulatory filings say. The regional airline company pegs the contract's total value at C$2.5 billion, of which 64% will be aircraft leasing revenue. Chorus began expanding its regional aircraft leasing business in 2015 as a response to the 2015 CPA with Air Canada, which significantly slashed Jazz's revenues.

Goyal agrees to reduce his stake to save Jet Airways Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) founder and Chairman Naresh Goyal has agreed to reduce his stake in the carrier to 22% and step down from the board, paving the way for an Etihad Airways-led restructuring, the Business Standard has reported. Goyal currently holds a 51% stake. His future role has been a major obstacle in the negotiations with the Emirati carrier, who wanted Goyal and his family members out of any executive positions at Jet Airways. Following a fresh capital injection, according to the plan Etihad Airways would increase its stake from the current 24% to 40%. A consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India would convert a part of Jet Airways' debts into equity and would consequently hold a 30% stake in the airline. The airlines are expected to ink a Memorandum of Understanding within days to finalise the deal. Subsequently, Jet Airways' shareholders will have to approve it at a general meeting scheduled for February 21, 2019. Meanwhile, Jet Airways continues to delay payments to pilots. In January, it was due to cover the missing 25% of the October wages and 75% of the November wages. While it cleared the debt for November, it paid only a half of what was due for November. In a communique to the pilots, the airline said it was "actively engaged" with stakeholders and was "very close" to an agreement on the restructuring, The Economic Times has reported. For its part, the State Bank of India said that any capital provided to Jet Airways would be treated under the scope of the Sashakt scheme, a government-initiated initiative to deal with bad loans plaguing the Indian banking sector. Jet Airways currently has over INR80 billion rupee (USD1.16 billion) in debt. Philippines' Cebu Pacific eyes fleet growth, cargo ops Cebu Pacific Air (5J, Manila Ninoy Aquino Int'l) is planning to grow its fleet from the current seventy units to eighty-three by 2022 and will launch dedicated full freighter operations in the first half of 2019. Speaking during the delivery ceremony of the carrier's first A321-200neo, CEO Lance Gokongwei said, quoted by ABC-CBN, that in 2019 alone Cebu Pacific plans to take six A321neo, five A320-200neo, and a single ATR72-600. The larger A321neo will be deployed primarily out of congested Manila Ninoy Aquino Int'l to better utilise the available slots, while the A320s will be then placed at regional bases in the Philippines. Cebu Pacific also plans to use the A321neo's extended range to study new destinations in India, Japan, Russia, and potentially Australia. Currently, the airline operates thirty-six A320-200s and seven A321-200s. It has thirty-two A321neo on order with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac). Vice-President (Cargo) Alex Reyes additionally told SunStar that the airline planned to take two ATR72-500(F)s freighters, with the first one due to arrive in March 2019. The turboprops will then be used for cargo services between Manila and regional airports. Currently, Cebu Pacific does not operate full freighter aircraft, although it operates eighteen Avions de Transport Régional (Toulouse Blagnac) turboprops through its subsidiary Cebgo (DG, Manila Ninoy Aquino Int'l) - six 72-500s and twelve -600s. The airline also plans to double its widebody fleet, which currently consists of eight A330-300s. Flightglobal has reported that in late 2018, Cebu sent a Request for Information (RFI) to Airbus and Boeing for A330neo and B787 aircraft, respectively. Cebu expects to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) in mid-2019 for deliveries starting in late 2020. For Cebu, the widebodies will be mostly used on slot-constrained regional markets rather than for a large-scale long-haul expansion.

Air Italy to suspend Asia ops from 2Q19 Air Italy (IG, Milan Malpensa) will temporarily exit the Asian market at the beginning of the Summer 2019 season, ch-aviation analysis of schedule data, confirmed by the airline itself, has revealed. Research indicates the Italian carrier will terminate flights from Milan Malpensa to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (Thailand) from March 30 while service to Delhi Int'l and Mumbai Int'l (India) will cease from February 17 and March 29 respectively. All three routes are served using A330-200 equipment. In a statement to ch-aviation, an airline spokeswoman said the withdrawal from Asia was only temporary with plans to resume flights to the Thai capital on a seasonal basis later in the year. "Air Italy is growing and developing rapidly, focusing in particular on our Milan Malpensa hub, from which by the end of 2019 we will serve a series of new intercontinental destinations in North America and Asia, connected seamlessly to and from our domestic network across Italy," she said. "To manage this growth, we will continue to decrease our charter focus, build up and consolidate our scheduled network, open new destinations, and reduce, cease or make seasonal those routes which require modification for the overall maximum profitability of the business." Although no comment has been made with regards to new potential destinations in Asia, Italian government filings show Air Italy has applied for permission to run 4x weekly Italy-South Korea and 4x weekly Italy-Hong Kong Int'l services during the Summer 2019 season. Air Italy has also postponed the launch of its Milan Malpensa-Chicago O'Hare service, which was due to start this summer, to 2020. However, with its suppression, the airline will increase its Milan Malpensa-Toronto Pearson route from 4x weekly to 6x weekly while its Miami Int'l service will move from 4x to 5x weekly. It will also increase select domestic Italian services to 3x daily. Overall, with these modifications, Air Italy's international Summer 2019 network will consist of Dakar Blaise Diagne Int'l, Accra, and Lagos in West Africa, Cairo Int'l and Sharm el Sheikh in North Africa, and San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles Int'l, Miami Int'l, New York JFK, and Toronto Pearson in North America.

AirAsia X mulls services to US from Osaka with A330neo
AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) is evaluating launching direct services to the US West Coast from Osaka Kansai once it starts taking deliveries of A330900s, CEO Benjamin Ismail told the Aviation Wire. "(The first) A330neo will be delivered next year. Our current A330-300s cannot fly from Kansai to the west coast, while (the) A330neo will reach San Francisco, CA and Los Angeles Int'l", Ismail said. In 2017, the carrier launched its first service to the United States, connecting Osaka Kansai with Honolulu. The route, which Ismail dubbed a great success, was also the first low-cost service connecting Japan and Hawaii. Currently, Osaka sees a total of five carriers connecting it with Honolulu. In addition, United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) operates to the Japanese city from San Francisco and JAL - Japan Airlines (JL, Tokyo Haneda) flies to Los Angeles. Osaka is already the third most served city in AirAsia X's network. The Malaysian long-haul low-cost carrier operates 18 weekly flights to Kansai, connecting it with Kuala Lumpur Int'l, Honolulu, and Taipei Taoyuan. AirAsia X currently operates twenty-four A330-300s. It has sixty-six A330900neo on firm order with Airbus. During the 2018 Farnborough Air Show, the carrier added a further thirty-four units although they are not yet reflected in the manufacturer's order book

SkyWest orders nine E175s for Delta Connection flying
SkyWest Airlines (United States of America) (OO, Salt Lake City) has signed a firm order agreement with Embraer (EMB, São José dos Campos) for nine additional E175s. The jets will begin delivering later this year and will be operated for Delta Air Lines under the Delta Connection banner. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, SkyWest currently operates 146 E175s of which 49 are operated for Delta Connection, 32 for Alaska Airlines under its Alaska SkyWest brand, and 65 for United Airlines under its United Express brand.
