is to improve, regulate and systemise the service delivery through adoption of technology and IT infrastructure. The Government is making lots of concerted efforts to provide affordable healthcare facilities to poor population through programmes like free dialysis and diagnostics services, ePHC, teleradiology services, telemedicine and biomedical equipment maintenance services. These programmes are implemented through PPP mode. Various telemedicine projects have been launched under NHM enabling people in remote areas to get connected with expert doctor sitting in any tertiary hospitals in metro cities. Telemedicine has compensated the infrastructural gaps in healthcare delivery.
Q
Share with us your company’s business plan for 2019 The Government is aiming to develop India as a global healthcare hub. In a bid to encourage medical infrastructure in India, it has approved a budget support of Rs 85,271 crore for three years under the National Health Mission. Q
Tell us about implementation challenges in medical technology and remedial actions in this area. India has a huge number of unemployed engineering graduates, even though it is hard to find skilled Biomedical Engineers (BME). As per an estimate, there will be a requirement of about 6,000 skilled BMEs in five years. To fill the gap, it is necessary to focus upon skill development of these engineers and make them employable. Being a private player, we are investing huge money to develop the skill for the engineers. We have designed a training course, in association with Osmania and IICBCSIR, which is certified by Health Sector Skill Council. Our aim is to identify critical gaps in medical technology and support the healthcare providing authorities to standardise the system. We have formulated national SPOs for providing biomedical equipment maintenance services in the country with the help of NHSRC (National Health System and Resource Center). In addition, we have also designed a specific training programme for the

fresh biomedical engineers which enable them to understand the roles and responsibilities in the healthcare system. Our training programmes bridge the gap between manufacturing, maintenance and service delivery.
Q
Brief us about healthcare technologies and trends which will play a key role in augmenting healthcare delivery system in coming years. There is no limit for technological innovations as they play a pivotal role to meet rising demands of humans. In the next decades, one can expect that research will be in focus in the area of medical devices for restoring the functions of tissue through sophisticated implantable electronic devices. of the tissue functions. Technology has enabled people to optimise their health and lifestyle through wearable devices such as smartwatches, activity trackers, fit bits, etc. Such devices which can monitor body vitals are helping people set goals, track and accomplish them. Today, people have become increasingly health conscious due to unprecedented increase in lifestylediseases. Stress and mental health concerns have furthered encouraged consumers to be more connected with their overall health. There has been a spike in the sales of body ideal measurement devices in recent times. Tools that allow people to measure their blood-pressure, oxygen level, diabetes or blood sugar levels at home are becoming more common. One-touch tests and other home-based health-monitoring devices have given people the choice to keep a track of these body ideals on a daily or weekly basis. It further enables people to share these body vitals with doctors and receive real-time feedback through online platforms. Technology is replacing the human effort of keeping track of health. The next area may be functional tissue engineering where tissue will be grown from biological material (stem cells). It will be placed into the body into the right position to restore the function of the newly implanted tissue. Of course, there is still a lot to be learned on how to produce biological materials which have properties close to, or the same as human living tissue and can withstand the same forces and strain. There are two major fields of intensive research which will improve the current results, neural interfaces and neuroscience. The need for neural interfaces fosters development of new biocompatible materials for neural prosthesis, especially among the nanomaterials and nanotechnology.

‘AI Bringing Sea Change in Healthcare Research and Services’ Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformative promise across the healthcare landscape, from empowering personalised medicine to improving operational efficiency and predictive cost management. It assists clinicians in making better decisions or even replace human judgement in certain functional areas, says Dr B R Das, Advisor and Mentor, SRL Diagnostics in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).
Q
How do you look at 2018 – the year gone by – in terms of new technology or innovative initiatives in healthcare space? Despite a range of challenges, it is encouraging to note that innovations are happening in healthcare. It will be difficult to provide a comprehensive recap of all new technological innovations in healthcare space. 2018 remarkably focused on precision medicine, non-invasive technologies and harnessing the power of digital technologies and data analytics. The advent of precision medicine is a result of countless innovations in an array of fields, including genomic sequencing, big data and analytics, bioinformatics, bioengineering etc. Precision medicine and immunotherapy are changing the landscape of cancer treatment. Liquid biopsy provides attractive investment opportunities for diagnostic companies. The focus on blood biomarkers, such as ctDNA and CTCs, has unleashed the potential to now track and monitor tumours in a non-invasive manner. In around two years, most likely, liquid biopsy will become adjunct to tissue biopsy. In healthcare, today data

The SIMSR Way
T
he year 2018 has been pleasingly promising for the healthcare sector in India. The country witnessed an overall 15 percent growth in the healthcare sector and within the sector, the sectors such as medical tourism witnessed 22 to 25 percent growth. This momentum got a boost by additional positive steps such as India – Cuba signing MoU for better collaboration, more than 20 major international deals, bringing more investment in the sector and the major announcement by the Government of India’s signature programme ‘Ayushman Bharat’ in September 2018. Healthcare ecosystem around the world, especially in India, is highly

complex and has multiple layers along with different dimensions. It comprises healthcare service providers, healthcare product companies, government/public healthcare sector, regulators, insurers, healthcare information technology providers, professional associations as well as academic institutions providing quality healthcare education. The entire system is expected to work in sync with each other to bring out better health for the patient/ consumer who is at the centre in this ecosystem. Academia has a very unique role to play in this. It is one of the major stakeholders which leverages
effective interactions among all other segments. Understanding the need, K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR) has launched a two-year full time, AICTE approved PGDM Healthcare Management programme in 2018. As a leading private Management Institute in India, we decided to focus on four parameters to nurture the talents of students and create value in the healthcare sector: 1. Nurturing the talent by providing necessary knowledge along with grooming the skills required for future managers and decisionmakers. 2. Creating effective interaction

We have over 50 percent of the faculty from the healthcare industry who bring their practical experience to the classroom. Our academic partners K J Somaiya Hospital and Research Centre offer concurrent projects to our students. We anticipate 2019 to be much more challenging as well as enthralling. We expect Ayushman Bharat to take a jump-start which possibly would change the entire healthcare scenario. Internationally, India’s image in view of public healthcare is tarnished and it is often stated that despite a booming economy, India fails in providing access to basic healthcare to its underprivileged section. We believe it is the time to change the view. Ayushman Bharat comes along with lot of dreams as well as challenges. The dream to provide health insurance worth INR 5 lakhs to more than 50 crore households is a utopian as well as humongous task. It will be an arduous task for all the stakeholders to bring that on ground. New technologies such as artificial intelligence, digitisation, and
machine learning are likely to come in the forefront to make these dreams a reality. The new ecosystem will ask for a change in existing business models and need new sources of finance. It will also be interesting to see how existing classical healthcare services such as alternative medicines, counselling, yoga and meditation will make use of these modern technologies to find their groove in the new millennium. Growth will also largely depend on development of manpower that would have a holistic understanding of science, technology, regulatory framework and will possess managerial and entrepreneurial abilities. We, at SIMSR, are aware of these challenges and are gearing up to face these head-on. As a start, we are planning to create a platform called ‘Samavesh’ - an industry-academia connect on the theme ‘Healthcare 4.0: Myths and Reality’ in February 2019. The event will be empanelled by experts from the healthcare sector and academia. This will help throw some light on the challenges of making healthcare ‘inclusive which is one of the important mottos of Ayushman Bharat. We are also planning to organise an international immersion programme for the students in a country which has a better healthcare system than us. Our intent is to make our students firmly grounded in reality on one end and on the other, help them ascend the ever-expanding frontiers of the healthcare sector. A small step to build a healthier India!

between students and the healthcare industry by promoting experiential learning through various means such as guest lectures, concurrent projects, industry visits etc. 3. Providing a global exposure to the students through organising international immersion programmes. 4. Building research and critical thinking abilities by promoting research amongst students and the faculty members. We, at SIMSR, have made an effort to do significant contribution to all these four parameters. Our collaboration with Imperial College Health Partners (ranked 8th in the World University Ranking), UK, and K J Somaiya Hospital, Mumbai, has helped us in building strong academic content with a focus on emerging technologies and global trends. We have a good mix of industry and academic professionals on our Board of Studies which helps us in designing the course structure, getting experts from the field and providing opportunities for experiential learning for our students.

It helps doctors in creating their private cloud to keep all records and also plays a role in instantly accessing the data, says Ripunjoy Gogoi, Director Sales - India & SAARC, Asustor Inc, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).
Q
A lot of things occurred in the health sector in 2018. How was the year from your organisation’s perspective? We are backup storage manufacturers. Started last year, our organisation enables users to share data more effectively. Backup or storage to healthcare industry is as important and crucial as for any of the other industries. We have provided solution to the healthcare segment like clinics, small and medium-size hospitals, diagnostics centers, pathological labs, R&D labs, and pharma companies, where data keeping and security of the health record is crucial. For doctors, it helps in referring to the archived prescriptions of the patient who had consulted the doctor five or 10 years ago, without having to go through a lot of junk files and directly understanding the previous diagnosis of the patient and through better analysis, treatment helps to offer better health service. Also, it helps doctors to create a private storage server and surveillance system where the management staff is very limited. Network Attached Storage (NAS), a very simple and intuitive user interface which is easy to use. It holds the ability to add additional functions. Recently, one of our solution providers executed a backup solution project with one

of the very renowned orthopedic hospitals in Pune, where the entire patients’ data including radiological films which were archived for last 20 years were secured and stored. Now, all the panel doctors of the hospital can access these data to provide better service.
Q
How do you look at IT’s role in 2019 for healthcare vertical? Upgrading the hospital’s Management Information system (MIS) to manage digital data from each doctor, NAS is proving to be a new backup solution for them. They need to connect to the government’s insurance system and storage to secure data. Medical Record Department (MRD) plays a crucial role in healthcare delivery system. The records are stored electronically and the data needs to be retrieved and reproduced in various context i.e RTI, Judiciary bodies, Government census keeping, issuing health certificate etc. where NAS can be rewarding in accessing the data instantly. The recent announcement of ‘Ayushman Bharat Yojana’, the largest public sector health scheme of the world, where all the impaneled hospitals who offer health services need to keep the record of patients’ benefits will attract the business of IT storage system.
Ripunjoy Gogoi
Director Sales - India & SAARC Asustor Inc
Q
Tell us about latest technology products ASUSTOR is planning to launch in 2019. NAS itself is a new technology product for healthcare industry against the high-cost server machines and infrastructure. It is very accessible and within the budget of the maximum population. NAS is equipped with all the features catering to the smallest clinic, to the pharma to the large hospitals. With NAS, doctors can create their own private cloud to keep all records. It also adds surveillance system for examination findings, lab reports, data taken from radiological imaging like x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, documents, emails, etc.

Organic food holds huge importance in the light of rising lifestyle diseases due to a range of factors including unregulated dietary pattern of people in India. Pristine focusses on providing minimally processed food with low-added sugar and salt, says K C Raghu, Founder and MD, Pristine Organics, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).
Q
Pristine is a pioneer company in the area of organic food and critical medical diets. Tell us about the mission and vision of the company. Pristine is deeply embedded in nutrition research and designer diet formulations. The vision is blending tradition and innovation, connecting the dots, keeping ecology and environment, and above all helping people to live a healthy and happy life.
Q
In light of rising lifestyle diseases, organic food holds huge importance. As an expert, how do you perceive the statement? Organic food has seen tremendous growth in past decade. More and more people are looking into organic foods for its true form and content. Unfortunately, there have been some organic foods like Maida (white flour) and devitalised white rice etc. So, people are asking for minimally processed diverse varieties in this segment rather than same white rice and routine run-of-the-mill foods coming under organic label. Organic value added products will continue to grow along with staples. It should be organic in real sense not just being free from pesticides and pesticide residues. It has to be free from added junk like sugar and salt. Ecological sensitivity, increased disease burden and abundant health information are helping

Pristine Embedded in Nutrition Research, Designer Diet people to make a better choice.
Q
With decades of experience in critical nutritional solutions, formulations and safe organic food productions, how do you analyse food habits of Indians? People have the notion that good health is all about absence of any type of disease within human body. But it goes far beyond that. Renowned poet and activist Wendell Berry defines health as unconscious wholesomeness, while to the World Health Organization (WHO) health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. If we analyse the Indian diet, as per the National Sample Survey India, 68th round, cereals contribute around 50 percent of the calories in the diet. They are highly refined and processed cereal which can also be termed as junk, devoid of dietary fiber and essential micronutrient. It is very interesting to know that the consumption of sugar and honey in India is more as compared to fruits and vegetables i.e. 11% versus 7% respectively. Though, the average intake of protein is 60 gm per day, the contribution of protein is majorly from cereal which is close to 50%. This clearly indicates that good quality protein like milk and milk products, pulses and non-vegetarian

Tell us some significant features of your products and how do they contribute to create a healthy India? Pristine focusses on providing minimally processed food with low added sugar and salt. The dietary fiber content of our food products is high making it healthier with high satiety value
Q
Shed some light on market size of organic food. Do you agree that food technology market needs to be regulated? The current market size of organic food is INR 40,000 million. Any regulation, administration and bureaucratic maze prove to be cumbersome and deterrent.

Cancer Care Perspective
‘Healthy Lifestyle, Diet Keys to Prevent Cancer’ Cancer is one of the fatal diseases engulfing a large number of Indians every year. The disease is more prevalent among women than men. Healthy lifestyle, diet, and proper exercise can minimise the risk of cancer, says Dr Anshuman Kumar, Director, Surgical Oncology, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, New Delhi, in an interview with Mukul Kumar Mishra of Elets News Network (ENN).
Q
Cancer in India is the second biggest killer after heart disease and responsible for thousands of deaths annually. As an expert, how do you analyse such a state of affairs? Since many years, cancer has been absorbing millions of Indians every year wherein more than 50 percent cases are diagnosed in women. At such a rate, India will become ‘Global Cancer Capital’ by 2020 if adequate measures are not applied. Breast and cervical cancers are most common among Indian women while oral and prostate cancers are mainly found in Indian men. Tobacco alone is responsible for more than 10 types of cancers along with drugs and alcohol. Other most alarming factors are poor lifestyle, lack of physical activity, use of synthetic products,
and adulterated food consumption.
Q
Dharamshila Narayana, north India’s first Cancer Hospital, has been serving patients with state-of-the-art technology. What latest technologies and innovations are being used by the hospital to diagnose and prevent cancer? Dharamshila Cancer Foundation and Research Centre is first cancer hospital in North India. It has been serving patients for 25 years with an objective to provide affordable cancer care. No technology can prevent cancer except a healthy lifestyle. However, to diagnose cancer, awareness and diagnostic camps are hosted to detect few of the most common types of cancer i.e breast, cervix, mouth and prostate. Few conventional tests include

Q
A section of experts believes that detection of cancer at late stage is a major problem. Tell us about some symptoms which indicate the onset of the disease. Yes, lack of detection of cancer at an early stage is an issue and it is due to insufficient awareness about cancer in India. However, any unusual symptoms can be a manifestation of early stages of cancer like nonhealing ulcers, chronic coughs, lumps or atypical swelling anywhere

in the body especially in breasts, abnormal bleeding, unusual bowel symptoms, indigestion, persistent acidity, and mole or pigmentation that itches or bleeds.
Q
In advanced cancer stages, chemotherapy is suggested. What tests are being recommended at the initial stage to discover if some abnormal growth is occurring due to cancerous cell? Chemotherapy is a mode of treatment with the use of drugs. It is recommended depending on the type of cancer, the stage of cancer, the patient’s age, previous cancer treatment history and other health issues such as cardiac, liver or nephrological diseases. More often, it is combined as Neoadjuvant or Adjuvant Therapy i.e. pre and post surgery or radiation therapy, respectively.

essential factors in cancer prevention along with avoiding packed and processed food. Plant sources and green vegetables have been found with components that protect the body’s cells from mutating whereas heating processed meat products at high temperatures have been found to trigger the formation of carcinogenic compounds known as heterocyclic amines. Chemical pesticides, water and soil pollutants like lead and arsenic, consumption of plastic packed food items, practicing unsafe sex and use of hormonal pills can stimulate growth of cancer cells. However, modification of daily habits and lifestyle choices such as exercising, staying physically active, and maintaining healthy weight can strengthen body’s immunity against fatal diseases. In addition, avoiding cigarettes and other tobacco products play a very important role in cancer prevention. Moreover, awareness, regular health checkups and regular self-screening can help in early detection and in turn cure of such life threatening diseases at the right stage.

Lays Foundation of Robust Indian Healthcare System
With Narendra Modi Government taking some major policy decisions in 2018, it turned out to be a landmark year for the strengthening and improvisation of Indian healthcare delivery system, writes Mukul Kumar Mishra of Elets News Network (ENN). From implementation of Ayushman Bharat Scheme to revamp of MBBS curriculum and restructuring of MCI, the year witnessed many developments in Indian healthcare infrastructure that are aimed to play a significant role in enhancing patient care. On one hand, the Government was applauded for many good initiatives this year, on the other, it also had to face flak over handling of J&J hip implant fiasco and outbreak of Nipah, and Zika virus cases.
