Accelerated Reader Program Expands

Students read more than 32 million words! Upon astounding gains in Accelerated Reader in Grades 3-5, Scheck Hillel will expand the program throughout younger grades next year. “This year students read books on their own levels and computerized tests monitored their comprehension, speed and reading level,” said Nancy Penchev, Media and Instructional Technology Director of Hillel’s Juda and Maria Diener Lower School. “I have heard nothing but amazing reports from parents who are so happy their children are now begging for more books.” From January to May 2013, Accelerated Reader statistics showed the following students read more than 1,000,000 words: Shifra Dimbert, Grade 5, Rotem Miara, Grade 5, Mika Ben-Amram Grade 3, Daniela Fincheltub, Grade 5, and Ilana Stiberman, Grade 4. Statistics were broken down into grade levels showing a total of 32,499,510 words were read and tested: • Grade 3 read more than 6,000,000 words • Grade 4 read more than 10,000,000 words • Grade 5 read more than 14,000,000 words

An Incredible Year

Grade 1 classrooms were filled with excitement and anticipation as students’ eagerly awaited presenting their Writer’s Workshop Portfolios to parents the final week of school. The portfolios are treasures filled with written work from the very first day of school through the last week. “It’s exciting to see how students have grown and changed since the beginning of the school year,” said Leanne Weinbrot, Grade 1 teacher. This was just one year-end experience recently shared by Scheck Hillel families and faculty. As parents looked over the work and watched videos documenting their children’s growth through Grade 1, classes across all grade levels began to wind down. Friends said goodbye for the summer and classroom lessons came to a close with final exams, parent visits and student performances. Students in Grade 9 returned from the annual trip to Israel, and seniors became alumni as they prepared for next chapters across the globe at various universities and Israel programs. This summer, students are on campus for Summer Academy’s math, language arts and enrichment classes, faculty, staff and administration are prepping for the new year, the Admission office is touring new families and campus expansion construction is in action. In his Annual Meeting year-end video that looked ahead, Head of School Rabbi Pinchos Hecht said, “We raised the bar and we continue to raise it.” (Visit eHillel.org to view.) Goals are high for the fall, building upon growth of this past year. Here’s to new portfolio work to showcase, a new generation of alumni and so much more on campus. In the meantime, it’s all about summer fun (and reading!). 2011 Blue Ribbon School

Penchev attributed higher MAP testing scores to the program, especially in Grade 3. She has made a request to present the success of the program at the Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC). “We are so proud of the results of our hard-working students. Next year, Grades 1-5 will participate in Accelerated Reader for the whole year,” she added. “We are looking forward to more great results.”

Mind Lab Added to PK4, Kindergarten Curriculum It all begins with board games...Roughly 200 strategy and mind board games that ultimately develop life skills. It’s through these games that Pre-Kindergarten 4 and Kindergarten students will learn critical thinking techniques when they participate in Mind Lab during the school day in 2013-2014. “This program will lay a foundation for students to think things through and problem solve,” said Dr. Monica Wagenberg, incoming Head of Lower School. “Students will learn how to make healthy choices and decisions based on a well-developed thinking process.” Mind Lab is a world-wide innovative methodology originated in Israel for the development of 21st century life skills through the instruction of strategy and thinking games, said Dori Larea, Mind Lab Program Director. The concept of Mind Lab begins with games. Once students learn the basic rules, they detach from the game and use the skills for real-life decision making and problem solving, Larea explained. Mind Lab is also offered in Hillel’s after-school program. (See page 7.) To read more, visit eHillel.org/afterschool.

Year-long Personal Projects Highlight Independence, Creativity

The possibilities were endless. Students found something they were passionate about and spent nearly a year to develop it. Applying International Baccalaureate (IB) Methodology, students created their Grade 10 IB Personal Projects: the culminating event of the five-year Middle Years Program. Guided by mentors throughout the school year, the studentdriven, independent projects reflected learning. “The aim of the program is for students to learn about themselves, how they learn best, and engage in a long-term project of their own choosing,” said Craig Carpentieri, Scheck Hillel’s IB Coordinator. Projects were all so unique and showcased student talents. One student started an online iPhone accessory business. Another designed a small architectural mock-up of a building and yet another created an album of original music. Carpentieri said the opportunity to select a personal topic, set a goal, research it, and complete a product over the course of six to nine months is unique. Students can also continue to develop their projects. Rising senior Shoshana Wolf expanded her IB project last year to include a summer trip to Rwanda to empower and educate girls, most of whom lost their families to genocide. She has since founded Innovation: Africa’s Miami chapter. “The project’s design rests more on the process rather than the product itself,” he said. “Because of specific requirements such as a journal, report, research, goal-setting, time-management and product, the students learn a tremendous amount about themselves as learners and individuals.”

Building a Car Builds Family

My IB project was to build a soapbox car. I built this soapbox car entirely out of wood with my father. I designed the concept and made it come to life. The car can turn left or right and sustain up to 250 pounds. It was designed to be pushed around or to be pushed down a hill while someone steers. I was inspired to build a soapbox car because I love cars and working with my hands. I wanted to incorporate both into something I could have fun doing. Building a soapbox car was a perfect match for me. I would do it another million times if I could. The message I hope to show is that the IB Personal Project should be something you feel passionate about. It should be something you enjoy doing that you normally wouldn’t have time to pursue. In addition, it doesn’t have to be only about you. While I was building the soapbox car, I realized it was bigger than a school project; it was a bonding moment with my family.

Children’s Book Author Beats Bullying For my IB Personal Project, I decided to write a children’s book about bullying. My book is 28 pages with 30 illustrations. I decided that the victim and the bully would be around five to six years old in order to relate to the children reading the book. My goal was to help those children that are being teased and show the children who are teasing others that they should not do it and that it’s not the right thing to do. The title of my book is Carrot Head Katie. It’s about a girl named Katie who is entering Kindergarten and ends up being bothered by some boys in her class because of her curly, orange hair. My book speaks about what Katie did when she was bullied and how she stopped it. I read my story to classes and answered questions. I spoke to the kids about bullying and how it is incorrect. I asked them some questions about my story and was really happy with the responses. I really think that they understood my message and I felt I have accomplished my goal for this project. In my story I wrote about what to do if you are being bullied, what to do if you see someone else being bullied and how bullying is not nice. I want the children who read my book to understand the message that I am trying to send. My book is about equality, being different and how being different is okay. I want children to understand that everyone is special in their own way.

Bicycles Help Children in Haiti

For my IB Personal Project I decided to collect 50 new or used bicycles in my community and send them to an orphanage in Haiti. My father’s friend is from Haiti and his family runs an orphanage in Ouanaminthe. I have learned a lot about the children in the orphanage who have very little and don’t have the technology or electronics that we have here. The children walk several miles each day to get to and from school. Having bicycles would provide transportation as well as entertainment. The children have been wanting bicycles for a very long time so I decided to make it my project. Through my IB Personal Project, I hoped to show that as long as you are committed to a cause and have the drive to pursue a goal, you can achieve whatever you want. It also shows what a difference a simple bicycle can make in a child’s life. The children of the orphanage were so grateful to have the bicycles. It’s all the people of the village talk about.

Student Earns Duke TIP Award

When Dalia Shapiro moved to Miami two years ago from Mexico, she didn’t know a word of English. As part of Scheck Hillel’s ESOL program, her hard work paid off this year when she was selected to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s Annual 7th Grade Talent Search. “I feel so proud of this accomplishment,” Shapiro said. Duke TIP selects students who score above the 95th percentile on grade level tests. Students who participate in the program have resources and encouragement to continue challenging themselves as students. “I never stopped learning and trying my best,” she said. “It all paid off.”

After-School Program Launches

When the school days ends next year, students can head straight to their after-school activities on the Scheck Hillel campus to enjoy the arts, participate in competitive sports, or learn the techniques of chess and Mind Lab. Hillel’s after-school program is designed for students in Kindergarten 12. “We want students to feel that school is not only the place for academic growth but also for development in every other area of life,” said Dr. Monica Wagenberg, incoming Head of Lower School. Registration for online enrollment will open in July; options are based on student interest and enrollment. Space is limited for each program. Please visit eHillel.org/afterschool.

ALUMNI PROFILES Teddy Tanks Swim off the Shelves As a college student in 2010 at the University of Florida, 20-year old Spencer Grabois (‘08) had a great idea. In a world with endless possibilities, he created Teddy Tanks, a plush teddy bear with a fish bowl inside its belly. This past year he sold more than 35,000 Teddy Tanks, was featured on “Good Morning America” and was one of 30 in the world to earn the Global Student Entrepreneurship Award. “I have learned a lot of life and business lessons throughout the process of growing my company. Starting at 20 and learning how to manage people and play multiple roles helped me to appreciate everything that goes into building a company,” Grabois said. The concept was to make a plush animal come to life by placing life inside a teddy bear with a Betta fish tank. “You can feed it, dress it and talk to it,” he said. The business began when he made a few by hand and placed them in local offices and boutiques. When the Teddy Tanks sold out, he hand-made 5,000 more to sell. Today, he offers 12 animal options and more than 25,000 Teddy Tanks are assembled and stored in a South Florida warehouse. They are sold on Amazon, shopping malls and specialty stores. “I have been receiving licensing offers and partnership deals and I am looking closely at every way to expand and begin to develop my other ideas in the toy, novelty and gift industry,” Grabois added.

From Hillel to Harvard to West Coast; Alumnus Finds Passion in Education Alison Schwartzbaum’s (‘04) passion for education led her to Harvard’s Graduate School of Education’s Leadership Program (SLP), from where she graduated in May. She now is the new assistant principal at Bullis Charter School in Los Altos, California. Schwartzbaum graduated from Brandeis University in 2008 with a degree in education and society. She participated in the Miami Teaching Fellows program and taught 8th grade and high school language arts before enrolling in Harvard. “It was an amazing program, and I am so grateful I had this opportunity,” she said. “I had the privilege to be a part of a 38-person SLP cohort. They are some of the most inspirational, creative, purpose-driven people I have ever met, and they pushed and supported me to refine my vision for education and to develop as a leader.”

This is our Moment The multi-phased expansion of Scheck Hillel’s Academic Complex and Athletic complex has steadily progressed with construction well under way. Here is a look of what has been accomplished and what’s ahead: Plumbing, roads and sewers are complete. Foundation permits from the City and County were received and building permit applications for the next phase of construction have been submitted. Based on specific experience in school and gymnasiums, Butters Construction Company was selected as general contractor for vertical construction. The walls of the Athletic Complex will be up by the fall. The campus expansion includes a gymnasium to seat 700 fans, and a regulation-sized field covered in synthetic turf for football, soccer, lacrosse, softball and community events - all equipped with digital display boards and an advanced sound system. Funds are still being raised for the overall project, which includes Academic Complex of Grades 6-12 classrooms, labs, media center and a Beit Midrash. To learn more, please visit eHillel.org/campusexpansion or contact Diana Mundlak (305.931.2831 x279). This is our moment!
