Facts & Figures 454 new titles This year Flanders and the Netherlands have brought Germany a powerful wave of new titles. In the records of the Frankfurt Book Fair are at this moment 454 books of which more than 300 are literary titles, in all genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children’s books and young adult literature, and graphic novels. In recent years around 80 new translations from the Dutch have appeared each year in the German language area.

132 German publishers of Dutch-language books The publication of more than 300 Dutch and Flemish titles in Germany is the impressive result of years of marketing effort in Germany by publishers who have visited Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, and fellowships that have invited German publishers to the Netherlands and Flanders. In 2014 a special visitors‘ programme saw 30 German publishers visit Flanders and the Netherlands, and in 2015 a further 20.

171 Dutch and Flemish authors onstage throughout Germany Appearances by Dutch and Flemish authors were scheduled for the period leading up to the Fair. In May and June the International Kinder- und Jugendbuchwochen (Children’s and Young Adult Book Weeks) in Cologne were devoted entirely to Dutch-language children’s and YA literature. Seven Dutch-language graphic novelists were invited to the comics festival in Erlangen, and in June six Dutch and six German authors took part in a large Lesefest (reading fest) in cooperation with Das Mag in Berlin. In September the Harbour Front Literature Festival in Hamburg welcomed. Dutch and Flemish authors, while the Berlin International Literature Festival hosted eleven.

99 Dutch and Flemish authors attending the Frankfurt Book Fair An extensive literary programme is being put on in the city of Frankfurt and at the Book Fair, a large part of which will be held at the Guest of Honour Pavilion, featuring 99 Flemish and Dutch authors in every genre, and including virtual-reality presentations, literary meet-and-greets for the general public, and performances related to the cultural programme in the city.

Theatre, performance and dance – fine arts – architecture – photography – film This autumn the red carpet will be rolled out at several locations in Frankfurt for artists from Flanders and the Netherlands. Eight institutions developed original projects that will highlight well-known and lesser-known names in the contemporary arts, presenting images, stories, visions and ideas about life in today’s world.

welcome Flanders, the Netherlands and Germany share a whole sea. The three of us also share a whole horizon. We take photographs of it, as the sun goes down. I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but beyond the horizon you know, there’s a second one. I saw it for myself when I once stayed for a month in the tallest residential tower block on our entire coastline and, from up on the thirty-third floor, I spotted the horizon that lies beyond the horizon. There were so many ships sailing out there; it was like a motorway during the high season. In this booklet, it’s the horizon of Flanders and Netherlands as the Gastland at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2016 that beckons. What we will offer you over the course of five days has been brought together here in a way that’s easy to follow, arranged in alphabetical order and with handy schedules. Discover what there is to do at the Agora, make your selection from the exciting programmes in the Gastland Pavilion, and find the special places in the different halls, where you will be able to enjoy various aspects of the Gastland. This feast of literature and culture is best compared to a stay in the tallest tower block on our coastline. You will see the sun coming up. You will see the light changing. But above all, you will notice that there’s a second horizon lying beyond the first one. And probably a third one too. Because there’s so much to discover that will be brand new for you. I wish you a great deal of pleasure – in its height and all its breadth.

A THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE PAVILION

Sharing a horizon.

The design of the pavilion by The Cloud Collective was inspired by perceptions of the similar landscapes of Flanders and the Netherlands. There is very little geographical relief in the land of the Low Countries. The horizontal aspect of the landscape proclaims its essence on the coastline, where the Netherlands, Flanders and Germany share the sea’s horizon. The Cloud Collective (TCC) is a group of architecture and design teams that work together to create spatial-social projects that transcend scale, from regional design to event architecture. The design for the Guest of Honour pavilion is a collaborative effort between TCC Paris, a firm with expertise in scenography and exhibition design, and TCC Civic Amsterdam, which focuses on public architectural works. The partnerships within The Cloud Collective are characterised by a shared interest in the evolution of public typologies, a focus on atmospheric design and the innovative use of materials.

Panel discussion: Art(ists’) Books in Flanders and the Netherlands With Roger Willems (ROMA), Astrid Vorstermans (Valiz), Luc Derycke (curator, book selection), Tamara Berghmans (FoMu Antwerp), and others. Composed and moderated by Guus van Engelshoven. These two panel discussions aim to pinpoint and discuss some of the peculiarities and characteristics of art book production within this region. The first panel explores the shifting roles of the artist, the designer and the publisher in the production and distribution of art and artist’book. The second panel will expand on these thoughts and ideas by looking at the way artists, designers and publishers operate within the commercial system and look for alternative, possibly technological opportunities that might arise from outside it. Can comics build bridges and books form bonds? This expedition brings together students with or without refugee backgrounds. Comic designers, authors and illustrators explore their cultural differences and similarities together, and show how communication without language is possible.

E ELSE OTTEN AWARD The “Else-Otten-Übersetzerpreis” is a biennial award bestowed on the best German translation of a major Dutch literary work. The prize was launched in 2000 by the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Literarisches Colloquium Berlin and is funded by the Dutch Foundation for Literature and the Flemish Literature Fund. Else Otten (1873-1931), after whom the prize is named, was one of the most prolific translators of Dutch literature into German in the twentieth century. The translators who have been nominated are: Rolf Erdorf for Gideon Samson’s Doppeltot (Gerstenberg); Ira Wilhelm for Stefan Hertmans’ Der Himmel meines Großvaters (Hanser Berlin); Annette Wunschel for Johan Huizinga’s Kultur- and zeitkritische Schriften (Im Schatten von morgen/Verratene Welt) (Wilhelm Fink). Four authors, four parts on four days Anita Terpstra (the Netherlands) and Bram Dehouck (Flanders) have been invited by Eva Lirot and Hughes Schlueter (Germany) to write a chapter of the FAZ Book Fair Crime Novel. ‘Der alte Meister/ The Old Master’ is reminiscent of Rembrandt’s Samson painting, with the Frankfurt Book Fair as the setting. A story full of humour and suspense that will be published across four days, starting on 16 October on FAZ.NET. GRUNBERG LAB Dutch author Arnon Grunberg had his brain activity measured by neurologists from the University of Amsterdam while he was writing the novella Het bestand (Nijgh & Van Ditmar 2015) / ‘The File’. KINKY & COSY The Kinky & Cosy Experience, created by Nix (klein i), is a giant black ‘box’ where visitors are ‘locked in’ for a brief period. While there, they are ‘brainwashed’, their proper upbringing scientifically erased. A new operating system is then implanted, either Kinky or Cosy. To see what the results of this are, visitors can submit their new thought patterns to extensive testing in a training zone before they are released out into the world as Kinky or Cosy. In 2015, working in close cooperation with the French publisher Le Lombard and the Angoulême festival, the Flemish Literature Fund presented The Kinky & Cosy Experience at the most important international comics festival in the world. Cartoonist Nix has travelled with the expo in a container all over Europe, from Naples to Turnhout, and via Antwerp and Brussels to Erlangen and Delémont. And now: Frankfurt. AGORA D2

Frans Masereel Centre National and international artists, researchers and graphic artists can live, meet and experiment in the Frans Masereel Centre. The Frans Masereel Centre (1972) provides a workshop and residence for graphic artists, artists and critics, who have expressed a desire to work with intaglio printing, relief printing, screen printing and lithography, or who wish to examine the role of graphics in relation to other fine arts. The main focus lies on creation and experimentation in the studio. In 2016 the Frans Marsereel Centre is a graphic laboratory, where the possibilities of graphic application can be examined, expanded and restated. It is a forum for the audience, the artist and his work. The Eriskay Connection The Eriskay Connection is a Dutch studio for book design and an independent publisher of photo books, art books and research projects. We are particularly interested in projects that highlight a relevant topic, explaining the world in which we live, telling a story, making a statement, opening up the past or orientating our focus to the future. We like art projects that flirt with science or where science becomes visual poetry. Lukas - Art in Flanders ‘Lukas - Art in Flanders’ is the online image archive of Flemish cultural heritage and it produces, manages and distributes images from the collections of Flemish museums and cultural heritage institutions Best-Designed Book (Best Verzorgde Boek) The annual selection of the ‘Best-Designed Dutch books’ has been extended to include the best-designed Flemish books. The Dutch-Flemish selection of 50 books considers procurement, design and lithography, printing and bookbinding. A unique collaboration between the foundation ‘De Best Verzorgde Boeken’ (Best-Designed books) and the Flemish Publishers Association. 25

LITERARY GAMES It is striking that in spite of the enormous growth in the games industry – global sales in 2015: $ 61 billion – literary games are still quite rare. Game studios really need good stories. Inspired by that shortage, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, Media Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL issued an open call. The assignment: submit a proposal for a literary game. Out of the 49 proposals submitted an advisory committee chose two to be developed for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2016.

Winter - Studio Happy Volcano & author Joost Vandecasteele ‘Winter’ is a narrative exploration game about a one-second world. It’s a colourful but deeply disturbing place where everybody who died in the same second ends up. The player is confronted with the death moments of other people, presented as puzzles to be solved. The circumstances of their death influence the look and feel of those moments, from loving and peaceful to pure violence. The texts appearing with the images enhance the mystery. For tablet and pc, playable in Dutch, English and German. Puzzling Poetry - Studio Louter and poets Lucas Hirsch, Remco Campert, Ruth Lasters, Miriam Van hee In this game the poem is an empty puzzle and the words are the puzzle pieces. In solving the puzzle the player is guided by the graphic design of the game. Everything has its own shape and colour: verbs, nouns, short words, long words. Together they form patterns that give insight into the structure of the poem and the style of the poets: Lucas Hirsch, Remco Campert, Ruth Lasters and Miriam Van hee. Playing with words leads to an unexpected and concentrated way of reading poetry. For a moment the player steps into the shoes of the poet. It is an exciting way of understanding poetry. POETRY AT THE LESEZELT In the Lesezelt (‘reading tent’) – the cosy mirror tent on the Agora – you can hear two talented poets from the new generation read from their work, Charlotte Van den Broeck and Thomas Möhlmann, followed by two established poets Anneke Brassinga and Oswald Egger, who translated each other‘s work in the successful project VERSschmuggel, organised by Das Haus für Poesie in Berlin, resulting in an anthology with the same name. In between these readings Stefan Wieczorek presents the poetry anthology Polderpoesie – Junge Lyrik aus Flandern und den Niederlanden and Bas Kwakman (director of Poetry International Rotterdam), will present the VERSschmuggel anthology, with various poets from Germany, Flanders and the Netherlands. POETRY & GARBAGE A new phenomenon will be presented on the first morning of the Frankfurt Book Fair in honour of the joint Guest of Honour, Flanders & the Netherlands: the first ever garbage truck in Frankfurt with a line of poetry on it. The Dutch poetry festival ‘Poetry International’ and the garbage disposal service of the municipality of Rotterdam have passed this unique project on to Frankfurt’s garbage disposal service FES (Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GMBH). During (and after!) the Bookfair 17 garbage trucks will drive around Frankfurt inspiring its citizens with lines of poetry. ‘Poetry International’ chose verses written by Dutch, Flemish and German poets. R READING THE FUTURE As early as the 16th century, printer-publisher Christoffel Plantijn travelled from the Low Countries to Frankfurt to present his catalogue to potential customers. Note the ligatures on certain fonts. They almost seem to predict that, centuries later, Flanders and the Netherlands would be together again in Frankfurt. In the museum space Reading the Future, a selection of objects tell the story, past and future, of book printing. Tribute to Pieter Steinz

Pieter Steinz (1963-2016), who recently died of ALS, was a man of many talents: a writer, a journalist and the director of the Dutch Foundation for Literature. In March 2014 Steinz was awarded the Golden Quill ‘because, in an inimitable fashion, he placed literature, both Dutch and foreign, in a new kind of literary history’. Two of his books have been translated into German this year: Typisch Europa. Ein Kulturverführer in 100 Stationen (Knaus) and Der Sinn des Lesens (Reclam). These books have inspired many readers and literature-lovers. Dutch writers Herman Koch and Tommy Wieringa as well as British writer John Burnside will share with the audience what they find inspiring about Typisch Europa. V VR / LITERATURE IN VIRTUAL REALITY Virtual Reality and literature find each other in the unique project ‘Literature in Virtual Reality’. Using VR-glasses and headphones, one experiences an all-round cinema-like narrative. The installations – commissioned by the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Dutch Foundation for Literature – are designed by Flemish-Dutch teams, consisting of authors and Virtual Reality artists.

Diorama No.4, The Fernweh Opera (Daniël Ernst & Maud Vanhauwaert)

Be amazed by an aria in VR, with a libretto from a talented Flemish poet. In this elegant, hand-painted VR environment by Daniël Ernst you are given a seat in an imposing concert hall. A huge opera singer is singing especially for you as other visitors to the Book Fair take their seats beside you in this fictional opera. This multiplayer adaptation of VR technology has rarely been seen in action until now. Diorama No.4, The Fernweh Opera is conceived by interactive illustrator Daniël Ernst, developed in collaboration with the poet Maud Vanhauwaert and can be viewed in Dutch, English and German, with VR glasses from HTC Vive. Out of Sight (Sara Kolster & Jaap Robben)

A hand-drawn virtual reality story which transports the viewer to the world of nine-year old Lena and her father, sitting at a table. While Lena occupies herself with the dissection of an owl pellet, her father is tortured by memories. They are in conversation with each other, but then again they are not. Without realising it they are both thinking about the same thing. Out of Sight is conceived by Sara Kolster, developed in collaboration with the author Jaap Robben and Studio Zesbaans. AGORA

In 2001 the Dutch public libraries joined the coalition. The CPNB aims to encourage the habits of book reading and book buying. Each CPNB campaign has its own mix of two strands, one idealistically promoting reading, the other, more commercially, encouraging the public to visit their local bookshop and library. With success. The achievements of CPNB campaigns are numerous. Awareness among the Dutch population is high: the two largest campaigns have a brand awareness of 89% percent. GAU: Wiet de Bruijn (GAU) on Renew the Book 4:30–4:50 pm Renew the Book is an exciting Dutch programme now in its second edition, bringing startup companies and innovative thinking and ideas into the Dutch publishing industry. The authors tell of key moments from child- and adulthood, and of dramas that shake the very foundations of being. Ars Vivendi: interview with Jaap Robben 12:30–12:50 pm Petra Bamberger conducts an interview with Dutch author Jaap Robben about his debut novel Birk. Since its publication in Holland, the novel has sold almost 40,000 copies. It is a dark story that addresses the early loss of innocence of a nine-year-old child and reflects his inner life in all its facets. Petra Bamberger, Reading Commissary from the City Library of the Education Campus Nuremberg will be asking Jaap Robben about his novel, the story behind it and Robben’s working method.

Anne Feddema will read several pieces from a short story collection written in Berlin, De triennen fan Cheetah (Cheetah’s Tears). Writer and poet Eeltsje Hettinga and video artist Lotte Middendorp will show a number of short poetry clips, which form part of the digital literary project It Font (www.itfont.nl) in which poetry, visual arts, readings and music are closely intertwined.

LiteraTour – Simon van der Geest and Fikry El Azzouzi 12:30 – 13:20 This past summer 20 young people from the Netherlands, Flanders and Germany cycled from Aachen to Frankfurt, creating literature, poetry and music along the way. They recorded their texts in a soundtrack. These young literary talents will now be presenting the pieces they developed together during their heroic cycle tour live on the Lowlands Stage. Presenter Rick de Leeuw will invite nine of them onto the stage, guiding them through a show featuring the spoken word, music and literature that they wrote themselves. gastlandcafé On 17 September, the official Gastlandcafé of Flanders & the Netherlands celebrated its opening at Mousonturm. Designed by the Amsterdam design studio DOG AND PONY, the café will serve as an evening meeting point for five weeks and especially during the Book Fair for authors, artists and all guests, to meet, exchange and celebrate until deep into the night with parties, receptions, numerous additional events. Next to the large portraits by Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, far more than a hundred new literary publications and translations can be browsed. There will also be Flemish and Dutch specialities on offer. Reading and conversation with Rodaan Al Galidi and opening of the exhibition of posters flucht.punkt Rodaan Al Galidi earned his degree as a civil engineer in Iraq. After his studies he fled to avoid military service. Since 1998 he has been living in the Netherlands, where his application for asylum was approved only in 2007. He taught himself the language and published several novels and poetry collections in Dutch, inspired by German and Russian literature. His poems have now been published in a German translation: Rodaan Al Galidi: Kühlschranklicht (Hans Schiler Verlag). The exhibition flucht.punkt presents the best works from the poster competition of the same name by the educational institution Anne Frank. More than 700 children and young adults from all over Germany have designed posters for a campaign about the rights of refugees. Transforming Words. The Night of Creative Writing This transmedia performance brings the city onto the stage. Whether it eats its children or hangs around provincially: the city is the stage on which our lives take place. And it is the location and means of expression for far more than those who live there. 7:30 pm Three non-fiction authors from the Netherlands will read and discuss history and identity, memory, remembrance and forgetting Geert Mak: Die vielen Leben des Jan Six (Siedler Verlag) is a historical account of a large family dynasty in Amsterdam across four hundred years. The author was born in a Frisian village in 1946, studied law and works as an essayist and journalist. In the Netherlands he is one of the best known and most committed journalists (Der Mord an Theo van Gogh). He has written travel reports and the history of his own family. Laura Starink: Meine Mutter aus Mikultschütz (Weissbooks Verlag) ‘My mother was born in Silesia. To Dutch ears this sounds more romantic and more innocuous than: My mother was German.’ From her mother Laura Starink wants to know: What was it like back then in the war, what did you go through, how great are your guilt and your shame? The author was born in 1954, studied Slavonic languages and literature and worked for 20 years as a correspondent for the national evening paper NRC Handelsblad in Moscow. Douwe Draaisma: Halbe Wahrheiten (Galiani) Draaisma points out that memories can offer versions of the past at most and therefore can only be ‘half-truths’. Addressing the idea of an ‘oblivion pill’, for example, like the one explored in trauma therapy, he examines the importance of memory for our identity. The author was born in 1953. A psychologist and professor in Groningen, he has written numerous award-winning books about memory, remembrance and oblivion that have been translated into more than twenty languages. The Vandersandens are as fanciful as they are wealthy. Only single child Sarah wants to get out of the golden cage. A wonderfully ironic society novel about a messed-up family. Journalist and artist Saskia de Coster studied literature, was born in Lรถwen and has received numerous awards for her bestseller. Yves Petry: In Paradisum (Luftschacht) The inconspicuous, colourless man Marino has killed someone. From an anecdote out of the gutter press Petry creates a profound novel, making the bizarre plausible by literary means and the horrible bearable. The author was born in Tongeren, writes novels, plays and essays, and contributes to the literary magazine Dietsche Warande en Belfort. He received the Libris Literature Prize for In Paradisum. Stefan Brijs: Taxi Curaรงao (BTB Verlag) An island off the shores of Venezuela: Curaรงao, 1961. Max is the first of his family to attend secondary school and he turns out to be talented. He dreams of becoming a teacher and achieving the social advancement needed to get out of poverty. Forty years later his dream has been shattered and his grown-up son vanishes. This award-winning author was born in Genk. He writes literary portraits and essays. Presentation: Maike Albath

STATE OF THE CITY 14.10. | 18.12.2016 Die Ausstellung State of the City wurde vorbereitet durch dreimonatige Arbeitsaufenthalte, bei denen je 2 Künstler und Künstlerinnen aus Rotterdam, Antwerpen und Frankfurt ausgewählt wurden, um vor Ort in je einer der anderen Städte kreativ zu arbeiten. Die Produktions- und Ausstellungsplattform basis e.V. präsentiert die künstlerischen Ergebnisse dieser Arbeitsaufenthalte in Form einer thematischen Gruppenausstellung. Geprägt von der facettenreichen Herangehensweise der Künstler und Künstlerinnen zeigt die Ausstellung sowohl den künstlerischen Umgang mit sozialen und gesellschaftlichen, als auch mit ökonomischen und geografischen Aspekten der Städte Antwerpen, Rotterdam und Frankfurt am Main. Die vergangenen dreißig Jahre waren für der flämischen Architektur – der Region im Norden Belgiens und südlich der Grenze zu den Niederlanden – von entscheidender Bedeutung. Während das öffentliche Image vor allem von der Generation der „SuperDutch” unter den Architekten dominiert wird, hat sich ein Großteil der Flämischen Architektur jedoch außerhalb des Rampenlichts entwickelt und zieht erst in jüngerer Zeit die Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen Medien auf sich. Die Präsentation von Architekten aus Flandern und den Niederlanden wird der bekannteren niederländischen Architektur eine neue Perspektive zur Seite stellen und darüber hinaus die produktiven Beziehungen zwischen beiden architektonischen Kulturen vertiefen. Diese Ausstellung wird von Sofie de Caigny vom VAi in Antwerpen kuratiert und von Veldwerk Architecten, Antwerpen co-kuratiert. The past thirty years have been crucial for architecture in the Low Countries. While the public image of Dutch architecture has been dominated by substantial campaigns promoting the ‘Superdutch’, during much of this period Flemish architecture has developed largely out of the limelight and has only recently attracted the attention of the international media. This presentation of architects from both Flanders and the Netherlands will provide a new perspective on the apparently better-known Dutch architecture, and the productive relationships between representatives from these two architectural cultures, which are so different and complementary yet connected by a shared language. The exhibition is curated by Sofie de Caigny from the VAi in Antwerp, and co-curated by Veldwerk Architecten. In den Niederlanden ist die Dichte von Drehbüchern, die auf Romanen, Erzählungen, Novellen und auch Theaterstücken beruhen, in Relation zur gesamten Filmproduktion des Landes besonders hoch. Dabei stehen Stoffe aus der niederländischsprachigen Literatur im Mittelpunkt und die jeweiligen filmischen Werke halten sich in ganz unterschiedlichem Maße an die Vorlage. Oft arbeiten Regisseure eng mit den Autoren zusammen, manches Mal verfassen die Autoren gar selbst das Drehbuch. Das Deutsche Filmmuseum zeigt in Kooperation mit dem Eye Filminstitut zehn sowohl klassische als auch aktuelle Literaturverfilmungen, zu denen Filmschaffende und Autoren erwartet werden. Die letzten gemeinsamen Jahre hat die niederländische Fotografin Hanne van der Woude (*1982) das Künstlerpaar mit der Kamera begleitet. Eingefangen hat sie anrührende Momente – vom Älterwerden, von Kreativität und Lebenslust im Alter und von liebevoller Beziehung. Eine Hommage an die heute 83-jährige Emmy Eerdmans, Malerin und eigenwilliger Freigeist. The Dutch couple Emmy Eerdmans and Ben Joosten were married for half a century. During their final years together, the Dutch photographer Hanne van der Woude captured the married artists’ lives on film. Die Künstlerin Sarah Vanhee hat mit Akribie und Konsequenz ein Jahr lang ihren gesamten realen und virtuellen Müll gesammelt und daraus eine Performance entwickelt, die sich über mehrere Stunden und schließlich den gesamten Theatersaal erstreckt. Minute für Minute, Satz für Satz füllt sich der Raum mit Objekten, Gedanken, Beziehungen, von denen sie sich eigentlich schon losgesagt hatte. Oblivion vollzieht einen radikalen Perspektivwechsel voller Zuwendung und Hingabe: Alles hat seinen Wert. Von und mit Sarah Vanhee. Imagine a place where you can regain all things you once discarded, deleted, threw away and forgot! The artist Sarah Vanhee has collected all her real and virtual rubbish with meticulous care for a whole year and developed a performance which extends over several hours and across the whole theatre. Taunustor 1 WILLEM DE ROOIJ 15.10.2016 – 16.04.2017 Die Arbeiten von Willem de Rooij (*1969) kreisen um Fragen nach Repräsentation und Bedeutung. Für seine Ausstellung im MMK 2 vereinigt er erstmals drei bestehende Werkgruppen: Index: Riots, Protest, Mourning and Commemoration (as Represented in Newspapers January 2000 - July 2002), 2003, eine Gruppe der sogenannten Weavings und eine Auswahl an Sportkleidung des Labels Fong Leng. Sie werden kombiniert mit Arbeiten des bedeutenden niederländischen Künstlers aus der Sammlung des MMK und ergeben einen neuen und vertiefenden Einblick in sein Schaffen. The work of Willem de Rooij (b. 1969) revolves around questions of representation and meaning. For his exhibition at the MMK 2, de Rooij will unite three of his existing groups of works for the first time : Index: Riots, Protest, Mourning and Commemoration (as Represented in Newspapers January 2000 - July 2002). He will juxtapose them with works from the MMK collection in suspenseful dialogues.

ALL BEHIND, WE’LL GO DEEPER, DEEP DOWN AND SHE WILL SAY: 06.09 - 6.11.2016 In ihrer ersten umfassenden Einzelpräsentation in Deutschland kreiert die TurnerPreisträgerin Laure Prouvost (*1978) ein Environment, das die gesamten Räumlichkeiten des MMK 3 in eine raumgreifende Installation verwandelt. In diesem Setting verbindet sie mehrere filmische Arbeiten mit skulpturalen und malerischen Elementen zu einer Geschichte. Hybride zwischen technischem Apparat und menschlicher Figur bilden die zentrale Struktur der Installation. Prouvost erzeugt eine bizarre Vorstellungswelt, die den Betrachter auf unterschiedlichen Sinnesebenen in ihren Bann zieht. In her first major solo presentation in Germany, Turner Prize recipient Laure Prouvost (b. 1978) will creates in which painting, drawing, sculpture and video are united in exuberant environments. The main focus of the exhibition at the MMK 3 will be Prouvost’s filmic works, which will be embedded in large-scale installations of collaged panorama wallpapers and fantastic object arrangements, and combined with painting, drawing and sculpture. Schaumainkai 63 DAVID CLAERBOUT, DIE REINE NOTWENDIGKEIT 28.09. – 23.10.2016 Im Rahmen der Reihe „Im Städel Garten“ und als Teil des Gastlandauftrittes von Flandern & Die Niederlande auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse präsentiert das Städel Museum eine eigens für diesen Anlass entstandene Arbeit des belgischen Künstlers David Claerbout (*1969). Der Film Die reine Notwendigkeit (2016) ist eine überraschende Adaption des Trickfilm-Klassikers „Das Dschungelbuch“ von 1967. Claerbouts einstündiger Loop verwandelt die Geschichte der tanzenden, singenden und trompetenden Urwaldtiere in einen – fast – artgerechten Tierfilm, der sich allem ‚Vermenschlichten’ entledigt hat – nicht zuletzt seines jungen Protagonisten Mogli. Für Die reine Notwendigkeit wurde Wolfgang Reithermanns Filmvorlage in aufwendiger Handarbeit Folie für Folie, Einstellung für Einstellung nachgezeichnet und zu einem vollkommen neuen Film zusammengefügt.

The film Die reine Notwendigkeit (2016) is a surprising adaptation of the animated movie classic The Jungle Book of 1967. Claerbout’s one-hour loop turns the sentimental and comical story about dancing, singing and trumpet-playing jungle animals into a film that has dispensed with all ‘humanization’ of the animals – but also its young protagonist. For Die reine Notwendigkeit, the artist painstakingly redrew the frames of Wolfgang Reitherman’s prototype by hand, one by one, and then assembled them to create an entirely new film. Free entry
