CHAPTER 5
Kate met John near the lake. What did they talk about? Did they talk about James? We don’t know. Nobody knows what happened in the lake. Meanwhile, Uncle Tom and Mark were alone in the garden. They were smoking and talking. ‘You know my family’ Mark said ‘You are the only one here who knows my secret’. If Kate discovers it she will never let me marry Sarah. And you know that I love her’ Tom kept his pipe in his pocket. He was thinking about Kate and Mark’s words. Kate was a difficult woman, she had a strong character and sometimes she could be very cruel. And there was a surname that she really hated and it was Morrison. And Tom knew why James Morrison had ruined her life in the past. Marge had told him everything about that. While Tom and Mark had a drink in the garden, Sarah and Jane were talking in the living room. They talked about Jane’s life at university and Sarah’s work. They went to bed early because they were tired. Kate went to bed late that night. After the meeting with John she was nervous. John had talked to the police and had explained everything about James Morrison. Twenty years ago James was working for Kate; he was a clever businessman who was in charge of her office. They fell in love but James was married. One night James’ wife found James dead at home, in his study. Apparently he had committed suicide. Sarah woke up early in the morning, as usual, and went running. When she came back home they were all having breakfast but Kate wasn’t there. She went upstairs and knocked at Kate’s room but nobody answered. She opened the door and found Kate dead in her bed. She cried and shouted. Mark, Jane and Tom went to the room quickly. The window was opened; someone had broken into the room and killed Kate with a knife. There was plenty of blood on Kate’s bed. Tom and Mark took Sarah and Jane outside and Tom phoned the police.
