SUGGESTIONS (some options to use the printable): 1) Print the whole worksheet for each student. 2) Print page 2 and 3 for each student and print page 1 as a poster and let stick it on the blackboard for them to check and see. 3) Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 students, print page 2 and 3 for each student and print page 1 once for each group. 4) Print page 1 and glue it on cardboard; divide the class into groups of 4 students and give one board to each group. Print a set of places for each group. Student 1 and 2 play against student 3 and 4. Student 1 takes a place and gives directions to student B (placed in the “start” point with a token). Student 2 follows the directions and tells where he is. Student 1 can’t look while student 2 follows the directions. If the student 2 is right in front of the same place in the student 1’s paper, they get one point.

CASE 4: HELP ALIENS! TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS( 3 sessions)
HELP! ALIENS! Role A You have just been out for dinner with your friends. On the way home you see a bright light in a nearby field. You go to investigate. You see a group of Aliens having a party. You rub your eyes but they are still there. You call the police to warn them that there are aliens nearby. Strangely you find that the police do not believe you and think you have been drinking. Use your telephone skills to persuade them that there REALLY are aliens in the field nearby. They look as if they are getting weapons .. you MUST tell the police that there is now serious danger.
Role B You are the night officer at the local police station. You have had a busy night with the local drunks after the closing of the pubs. You are now ready for a rest and a cup of coffee. You receive a phone call from a member of the public. He is screaming frantically “Aliens! Aliens! Aliens!” You think “oh no! not now another crazy call” You need to use your telephone skills to convince the caller that you don’t approve of people who waste the time of the police. You give him a strong warnings that if he does not stop you will be force to come and arrest him for causing a public nuisance.

Good News??! Role A You are John, and have been at university for the last two years. You have met a great girl and after a whirl wind romance she has announced that she is pregnant with your child. You decide to do the right thing and marry her. It will mean leaving university and getting a job. You are sure that with your abilities this will be easy. You need to tell your parents but you are sure they will over react .. you will need to use all you telephone skills to inform your parents carefully of what you intend to do. Role B You are John’s Mother and are proud of your son who is doing so well at university. You have told all your friends that one day he is going to be a famous lawyer. You are worried as John has met this girl called Mary. You don’t like her and don’t like the influence she has on John. Next time he calls you will try to persuade him to leave her and concentrate more on his studies. You do not know about the baby. You will need to use all your telephone skills to persuade him that he is coming up for his final year at university and should concentrate more on his studies.
Taxi driver Today Lady Gaga was running away from paparazzi in Las Vegas. She got in your cab in front of Hotel Bellagio with her sunglasses broken. She asked you to shake off the paparazzi chasing you. Then you took Lady Gaga to Casino Bellini. While you were driving her to the casino you asked her some questions. Tell your friend everything. You also have an object to prove this really happened. Start your story like this: Guess what happened! Guess who I met! You won’t believe. I can't believe thing happened to me. I had the weirdest thing happen to me last night. Oh my Gosh, listen. You’ve gotta hear this one. Brace yourself for this one. I've got a good one for ya!
Insist that you are telling the truth: No, I’m not kidding. No kidding. I'm serious. I’m not pulling your leg. I’m totally not making this up. I’m not trying to fool you. Honest to God, this is really what happened. Be enthusiastic: Is that amazing or what? Isn't that incredible? Can you believe that happened?
Driver's friend: Your friend is always making up stories about meeting celebrities. Politely tell your friend that you're tired of hearing these make-believe stories. But maybe it’s true? You don’t believe him/her: You’re kidding me. You're pulling my leg, aren't you? You're having me on. No, seriously though. You don’t actually expect me to believe this, right? Am I supposed to believe this? Once you’re convinced, express how impressed you are: Gee! No way!
Really? Gosh, that’s super cool! Wow, that’s terrific! Dude, that’s awesome! That’s sweeet! Ask for more juicy details: So tell me what she said? So how does she look in real life? Wow, and did she …? And did you …? And then what?
CASE 6: I’m in love!! You’ve got two problems: You’re very shy and you don’t speak English very well. You go to a counselor. She gives you this guide to study.
Study the following Guide and examples, then pick a card and act out the situation with a partner. Step 1 When you want to invite someone, you’d better ask them whether they are interested in your suggestion. It seems a good idea to find out about their interests because you can be disappointed easily: e.g. it is not worth the time and effort to invite a vegetarian to a sausage dinner. Some suggestions for starting: Have you seen the new exhibition at the art gallery? Have you been to the new Chinese restaurant in the main street? Do you like swimming? Can you play chess? Are you interested in techno music?
Step 2 If you get a positive response, you should ask them whether they are free at a particular time. Why waste your time offering a ticket to a Saturday night concert to someone who has planned to do something else on that night. Are you doing anything on Saturday night? Are you free tomorrow evening? Have you got any plans for the weekend? What are your plans for Friday afternoon? Are you planning to do anything in the morning? What are you going to do on Tuesday morning?
Step 3 Hopefully they haven’t got any plans, so now you can come up with that brilliant idea of yours and invite them: Would you like to see the exhibition of modern arts? Do you fancy having lunch there and going shopping afterwards? What about going for a swim in the afternoon? How about meeting up after school? Shall we play chess on Saturday evening? Let’s go to a concert at the weekend. Why don’t we go out tonight?
Step 4 Even after being so tentative you can expect two kinds of responses: Accepting an Invitation Yes, I’d love to. That sounds a great idea. Yes, let’s. OK, let’s. I wouldn’t miss it for anything.
Refusing an Invitation Sorry I can’t. You know I have a headache. I can’t I’m afraid. You see I feel tired. I’d rather not. In fact, I’m on a diet. That sounds great but I can’t because ……….. I’m really sorry but I can’t make it because …
Step 5 If your invitation has been rejected you can go on suggesting another time or another activity by returning to Step 1, or you can give up and say something like: If you are lucky enough and they have accepted your invitation, just go on to fix a date (time, place): Great! Let’s meet at 4 at my place. Cool! I’ll pick you up after school. When and where shall we meet? What about meeting at 8 outside the club?
What a pity! Another time perhaps. I’m so sorry. It would have been so good to spend some time together. Then I have to ask someone else.
Now pick a card and act out the situation with a partner: You have got two tickets to a rock concert on Friday night. Invite B. B: You have an important exam on Monday and would like to revise for it the whole weekend, but you are a great rock fan A:
A: You want to buy a new dress for a special party. Invite B to go shopping with you in the afternoon and help you choose the best. B: You are crazy about shopping, but you have an appointment at your dentist.
A: You want to spend a day out with B. You don’t give up easily and won’t take ‘NO’ as an answer. B: You are very busy, and you don’t really like A’s company. Come up with different reasons why you refuse A’s invitation.
A: You are giving a birthday party at 6 pm on Saturday and invite B. B: You must visit your grandma at the hospital, but you don’t want to miss the party. Promise to be at the party later.
A: You would like to go to the new theme park with B at the weekend. You offer to pay B’s ticket. B: You think that theme parks are for children and you have other plans for the weekend.
