Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College

Is it for me? This course is for you if you are a teacher or trainer and want to explore and exploit technology in the classroom. If you are comfortable doing things like word processing and using the internet then you will find plenty on this course to suit you, your teaching and your students. It doesn’t matter if the idea of social networking sends shivers down your spine or whether you are comfortable with terms like ‘the cloud’ or ‘web 2.0’. This course is all about getting the most out of technology whilst simultaneously thinking about underlying pedagogy and demystifying a lot of often impenetrable jargon. We will also consider applications for those on pre-service teacher training programmes or those wishing to explore the potential of online tools for teaching and learning purposes.

Our philosophy The course is about finding the right entry point for you so that you become comfortable with the tools and ideas. Technology has so much potential but what we don’t want is to expose you to its potential to de-motivate! To that end, we hope that the only limit to what you do is your own capacity to innovate and create. Experts in teaching and learning (NOT necessarily IT experts) will be on hand to help. That’s not where our emphasis sits though you should still have ample opportunity to develop your IT skills alongside the resources you create.

London wide connections One exciting aspect to this course is that it will run synchronously in at least two other London colleges, offering networking opportunities and a broader scope for sharing of resources and ideas.

Course Content Entry requirements You would normally be teaching or training in either the compulsory or lifelong learning sector. No formal qualifications are required though any teacher training qualification will benefit many of the discussions around pedagogy. You should be reasonably comfortable around computers: browsing and searching for specific things on the internet, creating and saving files and sending e-mails is the minimum skill level.  You may wish to take this course as part of your preparation for a teaching role. For example, if you are studying for or have PLACE PHOTO HERE, recently completed a PTLLS programme.

 You should be comfortable writing in Standard Written English to at least level 2.

What work will I do? You would be expected to take an active part in the sessions and contribute to some online discussions outside of class time. There are a number of small tasks which build up to an online portfolio of resources that should, if you design them that way, be useable in your classes immediately. Satisfactory completion will earn a 6 credit, level three certificate in e-teaching from OCN.

You will get to discuss and use many of the following and come away with a collection of resources relevant to your teaching:             

Blogs Wikis Tech ice breakers Digital video and images Short animations Comics and cartoons Presentation tools (such as Prezi and Screenr) Mind mapping Quiz tools Online storage portals Social bookmarking Social media And lots more…

In addition you will have opportunity to discuss the pedagogy of using technology in teaching and both benefits and pitfalls.
